There is always a laundry list of things to do as the holidays enter full-swing, whether it's shopping, decorating, cooking, baking, Christmas cards, or other activities that keep you on the go every year in the month prior to Christmas. And yet Advent invites us to experience this season in a very different way than the hustle and bustle of our modern culture. Tune in as singer-songwriter Caroline Cobb introduces her brand-new Advent devotional—Advent for Exiles: 25 Devotions to Awaken Gospel Hope in Every Longing Heart—and encourages us toward the quiet moments that invite our longing for the coming Savior. In this episode you'll learn from Caroline about:
Passage: Protect me, God, for I take refuge in you. 2 I said to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have nothing good besides you.” 3 As for the holy people who are in the land, they are the noble ones. All my delight is in them. 4 The sorrows of those who take another god for themselves will multiply; I will not pour out their drink offerings of blood, and I will not speak their names with my lips. 5 Lord, you are my portion and my cup of blessing; you hold my future. 6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. 7 I will bless the Lord who counsels me — even at night when my thoughts trouble me. 8 I always let the Lord guide me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my whole being rejoices; my body also rests securely. 10 For you will not abandon me to Sheol; you will not allow your faithful one to see decay. 11 You reveal the path of life to me; in your presence is abundant joy; at your right hand are eternal pleasures. - Psalms 16:1-11 (CSB) Song: Fullness of Joy (Psalm 16) (https://open.spotify.com/track/4IlPpaVrdZnidglywIGQJj?si=274ab88e927d4588) by Caroline Cobb and Shane Barnard Lyrics: O God, You are my refuge I know without You I have no good thing O God, You are my portion My chosen portion You are what I need No other god beside You You hold my lot and fill my cup Oh beautiful inheritance You are enough In Your presence, there is fullness There is fullness of joy At Your right hand, there is goodness Boundless goodness Forevermore I choose You, Lord O God, You go before me You're right beside me In my darkest night My God, You hold my future My hope it rests secure In the finished work of Christ My heart is glad, my soul rejoices You hold me fast, You won't let go Your ways are good, and good for me I'm Yours and Yours alone In Your presence, there is fullness There is fullness of joy At Your right hand, there is goodness Boundless goodness Forevermore I choose You, Lord I choose You, Lord Your Holy One has risen up He's overcome the grave The path of life is opened wide For He has made a way In Your presence, there is fullness There is fullness of joy At Your right hand, there is goodness Boundless goodness Forevermore I choose You, Lord Prayer: Most loving Father, whose will it is for us to give thanks for all things, to fear nothing but the loss of you, and to cast all our care on you who care for us: Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, that no clouds of this mortal life may hide from us the light of that love which is immortal, and which you have manifested to us in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. He aquí, he aquí / Dios hace Su hogar con nosotros / Él tomará Su trono, para siempre glorioso / La maldición será deshecha / ¡Oh, ven, Señor Jesús, ven!”. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Lord gifts each of us and our spouses so differently, and sometimes those giftings require sacrifices of different kinds as we respond to the call of the Lord in a given season. Singer/songwriter Caroline Cobb joins me today to describe her husband's volunteer position as a lay elder at their church and how she supports him and the local church through that ministry. SHOW NOTES Though a lay elder is unpaid, their time is invaluable and vital to the health of the church. As a lay elder's wife, wisdom needs to be employed to balance supporting your husband as he counsels others but also maintaining privacy of those walking through trials. You can support your elder husband and your church through consistent prayer. QUOTES “I think when he is sharing with me what he needs support in. So I might not know all the details of a marriage that’s falling apart or who it even is, but I know that there’s a marriage falling apart and that he’s ministering to them. He won’t share their story because that’s their story to tell me. And yet, at the same time, if he didn’t tell me about it at all, I wouldn’t be able to support him and care for him as a wife. So it’s a little bit of a dance and there’s a lot of wisdom that needs to happen there.” -Caroline Cobb “As I’m praying for him, this is part of the way I’m serving our church. There’s freedom to serve in so many different ways, but part of the way I’m serving our church is by serving and loving and supporting my husband.” -Caroline Cobb LINKS FROM THE SHOW Advent for Exiles CONNECT Connect with Caroline Facebook // Instagram // Website Connect with Christine Facebook // Instagram // Books Visit How to Thrive as a Pastor’s Wife to access Christine's resources for ministry wives like you! But we have sinned, and you were angry. How can we be saved if we remain in our sins? 6 All of us have become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like a polluted garment; all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the wind. 7 No one calls on your name, striving to take hold of you. For you have hidden your face from us and made us melt because of our iniquity. 8 Yet LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we all are the work of your hands. 9 LORD, do not be terribly angry or remember our iniquity forever. Please look—all of us are your people! (Isaiah 64:1-9 CSB17) Musical Reflection: O Come, O Come Emmanuel (VENI, VENI, EMMANUEL) by Thomas Helmore Reflection Notes: The tune VENI IMMANUEL comes from a 15th century chant and originally served as part of a requiem mass. Thomas Helmore adapted it for congregational use as a hymn in the late 1800s, while still retaining the speech-like flow of the original chant. The text dates back to the 8th century and was translated from Latin to English by J. M. Neal. Prayer: This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.

“There's no greater source of inspiration than an abiding friendship with Jesus.” –– Davy FlowersAt TGCW21, Sarah Walton, Caroline Cobb, Hunter Beless, Davy Flowers, Ruth Chou Simons, and Jen Wilkin discuss what it looks like to be a creative in this age of technology. The panel discusses questions like, “How do we not seek our own glory on social media? How do we balance home life with ministry work? And, how do we serve both our local church and the global church at the same time?” Simons encourages us to think of our social media platform as the living room of our home, allowing for a more genuine engagement with our followers, as we treat them as if they were sitting on the couch in front of us.The key to success is not growing our number of followers, but instead, connecting with the ones we have and stewarding our creative platform well, while pointing the world to Jesus. Everything we need in order to create beautiful art, music, and content, stems from a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. We create for an audience of one—for his glory, alone.

This week, as a part of our new Excellent Songs series, we're looking at Caroline Cobb's "The Passover Song." This song draws on two Biblical narratives at the same time: the liberation of Israel from slavery in Egypt through the Passover, and the salvation of sinful humans by Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God. Music Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VjILH2YNUc Caroline Cobb: https://www.carolinecobb.com/ Song Story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiAUuroWHEo Lyrics (and other details from Caroline Cobb's bandcamp; edits marked in square brackets): Words and music by Caroline Cobb and Sean Carter Written January 11-14, 2013 Exodus 12 (See also John 1:29, Hebrews 10:20) There's a promise in our veins But it's faded by all these years in chains Send a prophet, send the plagues That by sunrise we will no more be slaves Take the lamb, take the blood And paint it on our doorways At night death will come but pass us by This is all our hope and peace In the morning we will rise Taste the freedom we thought we'd never find We will dance now in the streets Once held captive now we shall live as kings Lift your head, your voice And sing of your salvation Of the blood of the lamb that gave us life Now by this we'll overcome Now by this we'll reach our home There's a poison in our veins And it leads to death we cannot escape Send a ransom a perfect Son Remedy the curse with [sung: by] His precious blood And the Lamb that will come His cross will be our doorway And the red of His blood [sung: it w]ill make us white And [sung: the] daughters and sons Rejoice in resurrection And death swallowed up in endless life Glory, glory this I sing All my praise for this I bring Naught of good that I have done Nothing but the blood of Jesus --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/worship-review/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/worship-review/support
Opening Song: The Year of His Favor (Isaiah 61) by Caroline Cobb Lyrics: The Spirit of the Lord is on You A King anointed for the cross To the helpless You bring good news You come to bind the broken heart Speaking freedom to the captive Comfort to the ones who grieve To the downcast You bring justice To the needy one relief You give beauty for ashes You pour out the oil of gladness The year of His favor comes The year of His favor You give to the weak and faint A garment of joy and praise The year of His favor comes You come to raise up what's been ruined Rivers in a desert waste You are the Lord and You will do this For the glory of Your name Come Lord Come Lord Come Lord Come Lord The broken dance (come Lord) The blind will see (come Lord) The sick are healed (come Lord) The mute will sing (come Lord) The dead alive (come Lord) The sinner free (come Lord) The kingdom's here (come Lord) At last the King (oh) Come Lord Come Lord Come Lord Come Lord Passage: 1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD'S favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified. 4 They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. (Isaiah 61:1–4 ESV) Musical Reflection: “Be Thou My Vision,” old Irish folk tune Reflection Notes: The hymn commonly known as “Be Thou My Vision” is set to the tune SLANE, which is an old Irish folk tune. It samples both major and minor tonalities, with a perfect balance between the two. Amen.
Opening Song: Fullness of Joy (Psalm 16) (https://open.spotify.com/track/4IlPpaVrdZnidglywIGQJj?si=9db450e9a3904563) by Caroline Cobb and Shane Barnard Lyrics: Preserve me O God For I find rest in You alone I say to the Lord You are my Lord I have no good Apart from You All sons and daughters Brothers sisters my delight Let's sing together No other gods shall satisfy God You satisfy In Your presence There is fullness Of joy of joy You give me counsel My heart instructs me In the night You are before me Because You're for me I'm alright it'll be alright At Your right hand There are pleasures Forevermore Forevermore My heart is glad and my soul rejoice My flesh it dwells secure Because You put on flesh Lived a blameless life My curse on the cross You bore Then You ripped the doors Off the City of Death And the chains fell to the floor Now the serpent's crushed It has been finished And You reign forever more You are my portion My cup and You make my lot secure The lines have fallen For me in pleasant places A beautiful inheritance Passage: 1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” 3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight. 4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips. 5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. 6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. 7 I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. 8 I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. 10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. 11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Psalm 16:1–11 ESV) Musical Reflection: Prelude in C Major, BWV 846 by J.S. Bach Reflection Notes: Bach's well-known prelude spins out a series of modulations, almost imperceptible at first. The new harmonies continually unfold in a way that intrigues but never shocks. Prayer: Most loving Father, whose will it is for us to give thanks for all things, to fear nothing but the loss of you, and to cast all our care on you who care for us: Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, that no clouds of this mortal life may hide from us the light of that love which is immortal, and which you have manifested to us in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Caroline Cobb is a singer-songwriter from Texas. In 2011, she decided to write a song for every book of the Bible in one year. That ambitious goal set her on a path that she's still on, more than ten years later. She has said, “That year, I discovered that I love writing songs from the Bible: delving into a passage, putting myself in each character's shoes, trying to understand how this one small story connects with the whole, then coming up with a way to communicate that story through song.” That project has led to four studio albums so far: The Blood and the Breath, A Home and a Hunger, A Seed, a Sunrise, and, most recently, A King and His Kindness. In this episode, Caroline speaks with Jonathan Rogers about producing without striving, the upside-down-ness of the Gospel, and the reasons she decided to take a sabbatical. Today's interview is with Dr. Carmen Imes, who is the Associate Professor of Old Testament at Biola University in La Mirada, CA. We talk to her about her excellent book, Bearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters. We discuss what the command means when it says, “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain” (Ex. 20:7), and more broadly the role of the law in general. What does it mean to “bear” or “take” God's name in vain? How is the law actually missional for Israel being a light to the nations? How is the law applicable to believers today under the new covenant? We discuss these important questions and many more. We hope you enjoy this conversation as an addition to our time in Exodus this fall and winter. This interview also fits with the episode releasing this coming Monday on Ex. 19-24! The tension between major and minor chords reflects the challenges and triumphs of a woman's life. Prayer: O Lord God, who sees that we put not our trust in anything that we do; mercifully grant that by your power we may be defended against all adversity, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Today's interview is with Dr. Tom Schreiner, the James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation and Professor of Biblical Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Schreiner has written a ton of books, including several we love, including his Romans commentary and biblical theology. While Dr. Schreiner has done lots of work in Paul's letters and elsewhere in the NT, we talk to him about the book of Revelation! He has already written a short commentary on Revelation and has a forthcoming book on the topic—but he is working on a longer commentary on Revelation as well. Here we talk about: The central theme of the book of Revelation The biggest mistakes people make when they come to read Revelation The most important Old Testament books for understanding Revelation Some of the hiccups with reading the book “literally” Reading the symbols & numbers in Revelation: 7; 12; 144,000 Revelation as apocalyptic & prophecy How Satan parodies God, such as with the “false trinity” How Satan deceives today Schreiner's process for writing commentaries If God could give Dr. Schreiner one clarification on the book of Revelation, what would it be? New creation millennialism Terms/Ideas Referenced: Amillennialism: the 1,000 years of Rev. 20 are symbolic of right now, the “church age,” and at the end of this symbolic millennium, Jesus' second coming will occur—in sum, the millennium has been realized and we live in it now Premillennialism: Christ's second coming is before ('pre') the millennium; then Jesus will reign on the earth for a 1,000-yr. period (typically, but not always, a literal 1,000 yrs. in this view) Historic premillennialism: “historic” because many early in the church held this view—Jesus returns prior to a millennium on the earth, but after any period of “tribulation” in the present or future ("posttribulational") Dispensational premillennialism: still premillennial, but often with the emphasis on a future (usually 7-yr.) tribulation and also emphasizing God having future plans for Israel not fulfilled in the church (a "pretribulational" rapture of the church in this view) New creation millennialism: in another's words, “the thousand years of Revelation 20:1-10 begins at the glorious, world-shattering coming of Jesus Christ and has the new creation as its setting” Recommended Resources from Dr. Schreiner 40 Questions About the End Times (Schnabel) Beale's shorter commentary Jim Hamilton's commentary The Triumph of the Lamb (Johnson) Stephen Smalley's commentary Koester's commentary Breaking the Code (Metzger) Anything by John Frame Other Radically Normal interviews: On Tour w/ Caroline Cobb (#84) Union with Christ w/ Kyle Worley (#81) Trading Hustle and Hurry for the Goodness of Limits w/ Dr. Ashley Hales (#76) The Importance of Deuteronomy w/ Dr. Kyong-Jin Lee (#73) The Missionary Heart of the Book of Exodus w/ Dr. W. I'm honored to be joined by Caroline Cobb on the podcast today. Caroline has a new album out this month called A King & His Kindness, which I'm sure we'll talk about today. But something else that intrigues me is a challenge she took in 2011 to write a song for every book in the Bible. That's 66 songs. Let's find out more about that challenge and learn a little more about the new album. Caroline Cobb: Website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. And of course, on our page: Christian Music Archive. Singer-songwriter, Caroline Cobb, joins me on the podcast to discuss longing with hope: waiting for Christ’s return while enjoying the common graces on this side of eternity. Caroline loves to share the story of scripture through her music and hopes to make it accessible to people throughout their daily lives. During her time on the podcast, she encourages us to yearn for Christ’s return and set our hope in Him. Her love for the Lord and passion for His word is radiant. A little bit about the guest: Before her thirtieth birthday, singer-songwriter Caroline Cobb set a goal to write a song for every book of the Bible in one year. That year set in motion a passion to tell the stories of scripture through music, with creativity and faithfulness. Caroline’s forthcoming album, A Seed, A Sunrise, explores the longing hope of Advent, the joy of Christmas, and the anticipation of Christ’s return. Produced by Isaac Wardell (Josh Garells, Sandra McCracken) and featuring gospel trio Resound and a fourteen-piece string orchestra, the new album builds on Caroline’s previous work the Blood + the Breath (2013) and a Home & a Hunger (2017). Both trace a theme from creation to Christ’s return, with every song parachuting into a different biblical scene. Caroline has been featured by The Gospel Coalition, Doxology & Theology, Risen Motherhood and many more, with a Home & a Hunger named among “The Best Albums of the 2010s” by The Gospel Coalition. She and her husband live in Dallas, TX with their three children Ellie, Harrison and Libby. Noteworthy quotes: “When you know the end of the story, all of the messy middle makes a lot more sense and there’s a lot more hope when things are hard. “ 5:36 “We’re so quick to rush to the warm fuzziness of Christmas, but I think that God has called us, also, to long for Him to return.” 6:32 “What we really need is not a vaccine or certain president; what we really need is Christ.” 21:22 Questions for consideration: In what ways do you find yourself getting caught up in the culture of Christmas rather than the true meaning of Christmas? Sign up here: nataliearent.com/podcastbeta Caroline Cobb is a mom and a wife with a passion to tell the stories of scripture through singing and songwriting. When she started writing her own songs, it was just a hobby; but a challenge from her husband and a looming thirtieth birthday turned her passion project into a profession. Her newest album A Seed, A Sunrise explores the longing of Advent, the joy of Christmas, and the anticipation of Jesus's return, and builds on previous storytelling albums highlighting the message of scripture. In 2011, Caroline gave herself the goal to write a song for every book of the Bible in a year. That put in motion a dream to tell the stories of scripture through music, with imagination, artistry and faithfulness to the text. Listening to this episode, you'll gain insight on: How stepping forward in your dream, despite the weakness and insufficiency you feel, is often the just what you need to lean more into Jesus, The dangerous distraction that comparison can be for creative work, and That being faithful to the call upon your life is far more important than the numbers of people actually paying attention to work you're doing. When life gets hard, what is your hope? What helps you weather the storms of life? As believers, we will experience suffering and hardships on this side of eternity. We have to ask: what helps us persevere and not lose hope? The key is to set our eyes, hearts, and minds on eternity. This is really important, but even as believers, we may not know the why and how. In this episode, we talk about what setting our eyes on eternity means, and how we can practically do it in our everyday lives. Advent is around the corner. The joy of Christmas is starting to fill the air. This year more than ever though, many of us are feeling the tension between the suffering and heartache of this broken world and the joy of Christmas. “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” is a beautiful Advent hymn that works through this dissonance, and singer/songwriter Caroline Cobb helps us navigate through the lyrics to uncover the beauty that is Jesus, the reason for the season. Caroline Cobb is a singer/songwriter who's music has been compared to the likes of Rich Mullins, Andrew Peterson and Sandra McCracken. Her newest album release, A Seed, A Sunrise, is full of songs that shape the upcoming season of Advent. Through imagination, artistry and poetic language, Caroline tells biblical narratives through her storytelling style of writing. Although these songs were recorded before the upheaval of 2020, we talk about how they seem to be a timely piece of art that pushes back the darkness. We talk about the creative process behind her writing, how stories through songs shape us and the life goal she set in 2011 that served as a catalyst for her future in music and the albums that would follow. https://www.carolinecobb.com To connect with the podcast follow on Instagram or Facebook @artandfaithpodcast To give a financial gift to support this independent work: https://www.patreon.com/artandfaithpodcast

Has anyone ever told you to “trust God”? The assumption behind that phrase is that God is trustworthy. But how can we know that He will make good on His promises? Can we really trust that He will be faithful and work all things for our good? We can find ourselves asking these questions especially in times of suffering. We can trust God because He is a covenant-making and covenant-keeping God. Covenants show us how God relates to us, and why we can have a sure and confident hope in Jesus. Personal goals related to Bible intake: is it necessary to have a structured plan? Is that being legalistic? What if life is too busy for inductive studies? What if you’ve tried a reading plan in the past and always get off track? Should you try again? It is possible to have specific Bible study goals that you can implement, whatever your life season. The Word is nourishment to our souls, and the ultimate aim of Bible study is to know God and be transformed into His likeness. “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”. You know the hymn and the melody. But did you know that each verse is paired with a different Messianic name? The hymn also upholds a dual purpose. On one hand, it reminds us of Israel’s longing for the Messiah and Christ’s first coming. On the other, it turns believers’ hearts today for Christ’s second coming when He will consummate God’s Kingdom and dwell with His people forever! Caroline Cobb graciously leads our discussion and shares her personal rendition of the song in the episode! What exactly is Advent? Is it commanded in Scripture? Why and how should we observe it? Advent is a season marked on the church calendar, and it begins on December 1st this year. During Advent, believers intentionally remember the longing that God’s people felt awaiting the Messiah. It is also a time to recognize the truth that we are currently in a season of waiting for Christ’s return. We discuss the benefits of observing Advent and share the many ways your family can make meaningful Advent traditions this season. Joel Limpic emcees a panel with Sandra McCracken, Caroline Cobb, and Ryan Gikas. The crew gives practical insight on how to write songs from Scripture, how to co-write, and how to share new songs with your congregation. Quotes: "How can you use melody and all the tools a songwriter has to make people feel the truth of this passage, what God is trying to get into our hearts with this passage?” "What words are we putting in the mouths of our people? What are we extracting out of our people? What is God doing in our church? Listen to the prayers of our people. What are you hearing consistently? Have a pulse on the community piece of it and the people around us.”

Christine talks with singer/songwriter Caroline Cobb about how she uses her voice and creative talents to serve God and others. Caroline shares how she begin writing songs and taking the huge risk of playing them for others. She also talks about the temptations that lay like landmines in any type of service that puts you up in front of others--things like comparison, envy, isolation, and control. Though we may not all be songwriters like her, Caroline helps us see how even the little things we do everyday matter in the Kingdom of God.LINKS FROM THE SHOWWhite Rock Fellowship // "There is a Mountain" // "Only the Sick Need a Physician" // Caroline's music on iTunes // Follow Caroline on SpotifyThank you to Baker Books for sponsoring today's episode! Today on Heart Lessons, singer-songwriter Caroline Cobb shares her thoughts on why God’s great love for us compels us to worship with song. My prayer as you listen is that you will see how worshipping the Lord is both our response to His love for us and our expression of love to Him, as well as a reflection of the song God sings over us as His beloved. Today, we talk with singer and songwriter Caroline Cobb about the Bible's big story and how we never outgrow the gospel. In 2011, Caroline gave herself a goal to write a song for every book of the Bible in a year. That year of writing set in motion a new passion to tell the stories of scripture through music, faithfully and creatively. Caroline shares about the way knowing the Bible's big story informs the way we see the world, and how it transforms the way we approach God. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/womenencouraged)

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I chatted with Valerie Woerner of Val Marie Paper Company. We talked about everything from the purpose of prayer to how it works in conjunction with the other spiritual disciples. I confessed that prayer is one of the most humbling aspects of my walk with the Lord, and ya’ll, our conversation got me excited! I walked away encouraged to take advantage of the real privilege we have to grow in intimacy with God through prayer. Val said, “Jesus had to die on the cross so that we could be in communication with God. Without the cross, sin would separate us from God. There is no other way to have communication with God apart from the cross.” I am so thankful that Christ came so that we can be in true fellowship with God by the power of the Holy Spirit. What a gift to get to converse with him because of what Christ has done for us! So you’ll know her a little better, Valerie does life every day with her husband, Tyler, who is the owner of Pixelbrush Studios by day and a gourmet chef by night. She is momma to Vivi Mae and Vana. Her best friend was sort of built in but she wouldn’t trade her for any other, her twin sister Natalie! They live in Woerner Bungalow and are passionate about minimalistic living and finding margin in this busy-loving world. They live in Lafayette, Louisiana (also known as Cajun Country). She loves her life and where God has taken her, but He is far from done with her. Valerie doesn’t pretend to have it all figured out, but she’s happy to share her journey with us all! Her recent book, The Finishing School, is her journey and what she’d share with us if we were sitting on her porch drinking iced tea. I’m so excited for ya’ll to hear from her today! On this episode of the Journeywomen podcast I had the privilege of chatting with Caroline Cobb. Caroline is a singer-songwriter and worship leader particularly interested in telling the stories of scripture through her music. Her new album A Home + A Hunger centers around the biblical theme of kingdom hope in exile. Caroline and I talked about how viewing Scripture as one Big Story has not only developed our theology, but literally transformed us. I love her encouragement to keep looking at Scripture, no matter what season we’re in or how much time we’re able to devote to studying, because God will use Scripture to change our lives. My favorite quote was, “The Bible is a book about God. It’s not about us. What’s really cool about it is that when we go to Scripture looking for God and not just looking for a quick, Instagram-sized encouragement or whatever, then that is where we find TRUE encouragement, when we’re gazing upward at him instead of trying to get a quick answer or just feel better.” I’m encouraged to continue my quest to grow in my understanding of how this Grand Narrative works it’s way throughout all of history.
