The LIFT Expo is a highly touted cannabis expo from Canada and I've always had a fair bit of FOMO when I would hear about all of the connections and fun attendees were having north of the border. At LIFT, the best brands launch cutting-edge new products, exciting new canna-brands are born, and icons of the industry share valuable trade secrets with attendees in keynote sessions, panels, and networking mixers. Well, you can imagine my extreme elation when I heard that LIFT is FINALLY coming to the US! Naturally, I had to talk to the women in charge! Today's episode features Lift Expo leaders Lindsay Roberts, Events & Experiences Portfolio Lead, and Rachel Grundner, Sales Director for a lively conversation about the conference, their journey into cannabis, and personal relationships with the plant. I loved it, and so will you, so pack a large bowl and get comfy :)LIFT EXPO, San Francisco, August 2-4 Join us for Lift's strategy-focused, advocacy-oriented business and community leadership conference. (Rock Hill, S.C.) -- The Winthrop University Office of Student Activities held its annual leadership conference, which is intended to educate students on leadership skills, provide networking opportunities and create self-awareness. The LIFT Conference -- short for Leadership Institute for First-Timers -- is a student led, one-day professional development seminar held every spring semester for undergraduate and graduate students. The Palmetto Report's Da’Vette Peoples speaks with Calvin Joyner, assistant director for student organizations and leadership at Winthrop, about the conference.
(00:00-10:13): “The Cautionary Tale of Jerry Falwell Jr.: It’s time to remember the qualifications of biblical leadership” writes Mark Galli in Christianity Today. Brian and Ian touch on the character of some church/Christian leaders and how growing a church is not the pastor’s job. (10:13-19:51): Louie Giglio speaks on pain: “Stay, it’s the best way you could glorify the God who made you”. Brian and Ian touch on heartbreak and bearing pain. God is not protecting you FROM the storm, He is protecting you IN the storm. (19:51-29:57): Ian posted on Facebook, “MEN: watching your kids is not babysitting, its called fatherhood.” He and Brian talk about the responses he got and what Ian is trying to get at about parenting. (29:57-38:45): Karl Vaders writes, “10 Questions More Important Than “What Was Your Sunday Attendance?” in Christianity Today. Brian and Ian reflect on this as pastors and say they’ve gotten this question too many times. (38:45-49:17): Beth Moore responded to the John MacArthur backlash from people with a classy Tweet: “Hey, y’all. Let’s cool it on the slander toward JMac et al. Doesn’t honor God. Let’s move on.” Brian and Ian give her accolades on her response as well as talking about how we ought to respond to slander. (49:17-58:52): Dan Ehrman joins us to talk about Lift Conference. He talks about how the shift of focus went from having a big name speaker, to focusing on church leadership in Chicago. The climate of the church in Chicago has struggled, and its important for leaders to route it back into a proactive healing. (58:52-1:08:04): Andy Kiersz and Allana Akhtar write, “Suicide is Gen Z's second-leading cause of death, and it's a worse epidemic than anything millennials faced at that age” in Business Insider. Brian and Ian talk about this staggering statistic and try and tackle the reason why this generation faces such tragedy. (1:08:04-1:16:28): Brian and Ian’s “Weird Stuff We Found on the Internet”: Rub the lotion on your phone? Make sure you have the right getaway car, or you’re going to jail, and don’t eat alcohol...because you can’t? Meanwhile, Christmas is right around the corner (not really) so ask drunk Santa to bring you an inflatable RV.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
(00:00-08:56): The New York Times Still Doesn’t Understand What It Did. In the era of fake news, what sources can we trust? Brian dissects this National Review article by David French on the Times’ reports on Brett Kavanaugh. (08:56-18:20): Brian is flying solo today, so he gets to talk about his favorite sports teams. This time around, he discusses the New York Giants benching long-time QB Eli Manning and how he may very well be the most underrated hall of famer ever. (18:20-27:18): Boy, 16, Stabbed in Fight Lay Dying as Eyewitnesses, Friends Videotaped His Death. Brian touches on the seemingly barbaric state of society. It’s as if the people who watched him die only wanted to profit off of the situation. (27:18-35:59): Brian touches on some tweets from Jeff Vanderstelt and Tim Keller. Vanderstelt quotes Keller, “The Resurrection is a giant receipt stamped across history saying your debt has been paid for and you don't have to pay it ever again.” and The Keller Tweet concurs that statement by saying “The strongest Christians are the ones most willing to repent.” (39:59-46:39): Brian refers to a couple more tweets talking about atheism and truth rejection. The first tweet was a simple question: “Ex-theists, I’d love to know if you miss anything about being religious? #atheist” and the second was from Union Seminary, they confessed their sins to plants. (46:39-57:02): We are joined in the studio by our friend Dan Ehrman to talk about the Lift Conference. He expresses the vitality of the upcoming conference because of how Christian leadership is in crisis today. (57:02-1:07:06): Dan sticks around to talk about his leadership roles and how his show “Leading the Church” instills a positive and in-depth perspective on the church leaders of Chicago. He also discusses good leadership qualities that he has seen in pastors he interviews and knows. (1:07:06-1:13:49): Brian and Ian’s “Weird Stuff We Found on the Internet”: Amish folks are running ravage in the streets while Nessie isn’t made in China. A woman in Rhode Island is feeling a tad blue, while Canada will fine you if you protect yourself. Meanwhile, Dogs are smarter than we think, and have a wicked sense of humor. A few decades ago, designers started using ethnographic approaches to help them understand people and their culture in order to design better products. Over the years, designers in their work have repurposed a large array of theoretical concepts, methods and tricks. Based on a series of case studies, this talk will reflect on this evolution, and describes the notion of “design ethnography” in order to highlight the specificity of this approach. Nicolas Nova is co-founder of the Near Future Laboratory, a research agency based in Europe and California, and professor at the Geneva School of Arts and Design (HEAD - Genève). His work lies at the intersection of ethnography, interaction design and futures research, with a particular interest in ubiquitous and mobile technologies and the cultural practices surrounding new media. He is interested in observing and documenting digital and new media practices, as well as creating design fictions, i.e. speculative designed objects exploring the experiences of near future. He has given talks and exhibited his work on the intersections of design, technology and the near-future in venues such SXSW, EPIC, the AAAS conference, O’Reilly Emerging Technology Conference, NEXT, the design week in Milano, the Institute for the Future, and the MIT Medialab. Nicolas holds an undergraduate degree in Cognitive Sciences (University of Lyon), a M.Sc in Educational Technologies and Human-computer Interaction (University of Geneva) as well as a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from the Swiss Institute of Technology (EPFL, Switzerland). He was previously a visiting researcher at the Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, CA), and a researcher at the Media and Design Lab (EPFL, Switzerland). Nicolas was finally one of co-founder and curator at Lift Conference, a series of international events about digital culture, design and innovation. www.nicolasnova.net
