Wot, no Daleks?!? If you had a time machine and could return to 1963 you would be surprised at the haphazard genesis of Dr Who. We think of it today as the eternal jewel in the BBC crown, but the show was curiously unloved by the Corporation in its first long run. It only made it to air by the skin of its teeth, and the Head of Drama, having definitively ruled out any ‘bug-eyed monsters', was livid when The Daleks hove into view. Later, Michael Grade, who hated the show, tried to cancel it and was overruled by the fanbase. John Higgs is a fan – oh, me too! … Continue reading →

Preventing Arthritis: What Science Says About Exercise & Injury PLUS Can We Regenerate Cartilage Once It Is Damaged?

What the Health?!?

If you've ever worried that running, skiing, or playing sports might lead to arthritis or a future joint replacement, you're not alone. But what if we told you that staying active is actually protecting your joints rather than wearing them down? In this episode, Dr. Brian Cole, one of the leading orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine experts, debunks the myths about exercise, joint health, and arthritis prevention. Dr. Cole has spent decades working with professional athletes, including the Chicago Bulls, and has performed over 1,500 cartilage restoration procedures. He joins us to break down what really causes arthritis, why some people develop joint pain, and how you can stay active for life without fear. We also dive into the inspiring comeback story of Lonzo Ball, the first NBA player to return to play after undergoing a rare combination of osteochondral allograft and meniscus transplant surgery. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Does exercise really cause arthritis, or does it actually prevent it? The biggest risk factor for joint degeneration—and it's NOT what you think. How to balance staying active with protecting your long-term joint health. The difference between "good pain" and "bad pain"—when to push through and when to seek help. The cutting-edge world of cartilage restoration and what it means for future athletes and everyday people. A behind-the-scenes look at Lonzo Ball's groundbreaking surgery and his road to recovery. Why This Episode Matters: Many people cut back on physical activity because they fear joint damage, but science tells us this is the wrong approach. Exercise is one of the best ways to maintain musculoskeletal health, prevent injuries, and extend your healthspan. Dr. Cole explains why movement is medicine and how even those with joint pain can modify activities instead of avoiding them altogether. We also tackle the emotional and psychological aspects of injury and recovery—especially for athletes who define themselves by their physical abilities. Whether you're a weekend warrior, an aspiring athlete, or someone who just wants to stay mobile into your later years, this episode has invaluable insights. Key Takeaways: The #1 factor in maintaining joint health is avoiding serious injuries, not limiting exercise. Cartilage restoration surgeries are helping athletes extend their careers, but they come with long recovery times and uncertain outcomes. Pain does not always mean damage—learning to differentiate types of pain is essential for staying active. Professional athletes undergo extreme treatments, but many of the same principles apply to everyday fitness enthusiasts. Strength training, proper nutrition, good sleep, and a supportive community all play a role in preventing joint issues. A conversation with Marcelo Salazar & Zé Porto, co-founders of Mazô Maná, about how we preserve what is left of the Amazon rainforest, regenerate the forest and, most importantly, truly partner with the Indigenous peoples of the forest who have been stewarding this ecosystem for generations. Yes, the Amazon is a vast, managed agroforestry system. Marcelo e Zé, after decades of working with NGOs deep in the Amazon and building careers with corporate tech giants like Google, decided to create a superfood shake made purely from nutrient-dense ingredients—up to 14— directly sourced from the forest, avoiding monoculture. Indigenous peoples partly own the company. Why did they choose this model, and why are regenerative brands essential for elevating awareness and consciousness around deforestation? A healthy Amazon is crucial not only for the planet but also for local climates, as recent floods in São Paulo demonstrate. So, how can we encourage health-focused consumers in cities like São Paulo and Rio to buy superfoods from their "backyard", rather than relying on imported products from overseas marketed by fancy foreign brands who are mostly good at marketing?More about this episode on https://investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/marcelo-salazar-ze-porto.==========================In Investing in Regenerative Agriculture and Food podcast show we talk to the pioneers in the regenerative food and agriculture space to learn more on how to put our money to work to regenerate soil, people, local communities and ecosystems while making an appropriate and fair return. Christian Drapeau, MSc. is a neurophysiology scientist and leading voice on stem cells who focuses on discovering and developing ways to naturally enhance human stem cell production, mostly through plant extracts that stimulate the body's own stem cell production. He was the first to propose and publish the hypothesis that stem cells constitute the "repair system" of the body, as published in his peer-reviewed Medical Hypotheses article in October 2002 and documented in the first edition of his breakthrough book Cracking the Stem Cell Code in 2010. These findings made him the first to name a new bodily system since the early 1900s. Owning nine patents related to stem cells, he has spent over 23 years conducting research to better understand the role they play and identifying ways to improve the performance of the body's repair system, the foundation of regenerative medicine. Christian Drapeau holds a degree in neurophysiology from the Montreal Neurological Institute in Montreal, Canada. He has given over 300 scientific lectures on stem cells in 51 countries, and is fluent in three languages. He has been Director of R&D and Chief Science Officer for a number of companies, including his most recent venture STEMREGEN, where he is Founder and Chief Science Officer and continues his work of researching and developing novel stem cell enhancers.  In this episode, Christian Drapeau gives us the stem cell basics, discusses their effectiveness and why boosting your own stem cells is a good idea.  Learn more about Christian Drapeau and get StemRegen products here: https://stemregen.co/coachtara  Instagram: @stemcellchristian Get 15% off Peluva minimalist shoe with coupon code COACHTARA here: https://peluva.com/ CHAPTERS 0:00 Intro 4:50 Stem cells basics 17:21 StemRegen results 23:36 Effectiveness 31:58 Heart disease 38:48 Aging

Jesse Smith is the Director of Land Stewardship at the White Buffalo Land Trust, which is a global hub for regenerative land stewardship, ecological monitoring and research, education, and more. Jesse brings a unique perspective and a diverse set of experiences to his work in regenerative agriculture– his early interest in architecture led him to pursue an education in design, which then led to a career in product design and visual communication. But over time, he became interested in combining his artistic sensibilities with his love of the land, science, and permaculture, and soon thereafter began his journey in the world of family farming, food production, and education. Jesse is now a leader in the world of regenerative ag, and, as you'll hear, he has a real gift for communicating the art and science of land stewardship.  This conversation was recorded in November of 2024 on stage at the REGENERATE conference– one of the country's foremost gatherings of regenerative agriculture practitioners and thought leaders. REGENERATE is a collaboration between the Quivira Coalition, Holistic Management International, and the American Grassfed Association, and the conference attracts fascinating people from all over the world to share knowledge, build community, and create a culture of resilience and regeneration.  Despite sitting on stage in front of an auditorium full of people, this conversation felt much more like a fun one-on-one discussion between two friends. We covered everything from Jesse's winding path into the world of agriculture to some of the more technical details around land monitoring and certifications. We discussed the natural disasters in Jesse's community that highlighted huge problems in the local food systems, which eventually led to the creation of the White Buffalo Land Trust. We discussed how Jesse prioritizes his work when there are so many urgent challenges to address, and he shares his experiences with big business's growing interest in regenerative ag. We talk about the Japanese concept of Ikigai, transforming inspiration into action, advice for building a career in regenerative ag, favorite books, and much more. We also allowed ample time for Q&A from the audience, which I know you'll enjoy. Jesse mentions tons of useful resources so be sure to visit the episode notes for a full list of topics we discussed and links to everything. A huge thanks to the team at REGENERATE for inviting me to the conference, thank you to Jesse for chatting with me and offering so much wisdom, and thanks to you for listening. The December Downshift is a practice we come back to year after year to signal to our internal systems (and the people and projects around us) that it's time to start the slow down vs. get swirled into the year-end or holiday madness, followed by new year start pressure. It's the cyclical co-creation rhythm and structure we practice to mimic the natural world, who has managed to prosper for billlions of year (and gives us a template for how to evolve, grow and thrive).   Think of the practice of downshifting at year end like driving a manual transmission car - you don't want to keep moving through Dec in 5th gear, at a high pace/ intensity/output still running on mental or emotional stressors from the weeks/months prior, and then hard downshift into neutral the last days of the year ... you'll blow out your system. And then likely need to recover from all the OVER indulging, doing, spending, connecting in the new year. So you start depleted vs. ready to receive.  It's a wiser to move through the gears one by one, over the course of weeks, so you can: savor your connections, deeply replenish, and receive from all you have created the previous 12 months. Making choices that support you to be healthy, clear and ready to receive inspiration, insight and clarity for focusing and co-creating next year. Every year while the process of year-end downshifting is the same (there are 4 phases of downshifting - relax, rest, replenish, regenerate), the flavor and focus is different based on that year.  This year ... I tuned into create this year's December Downshift practice for you and received these themes: PEACE, PRESENCE, PEOPLE + PROSPER. I'll guide you through two somatic meditations + help you put intentional & spacious structure into place for Dec + Jan in these parts: Relax to Release  Rest in Place  Replenish to Regenerate  Complete with the Holiday Self Sustainability Practice  For 15 years I've created this structure through December and January for the co-creators + people willing to do things differently, wiser. A conversation with Marco Carbonara, cofounder, owner and farmer at Pulicaro Farm, in Lazio, Italy. A special early morning walk through permanent pasture surrounded by multispecies graziers, donkeys, cows, sheep, goats, chickens and, of course, some guard dogs, which means a lot of pleasant and present background sounds. We are in the hills between Rome and Florence and have the great pleasure to visit the farm of Marco and Chiara. Marco takes us on the morning walk to feel, smell, and see regeneration of permanent pastures in a Mediterranean landscape. Definitely not easy, but definitely possible, and yes, also profitable. How did Marco, who had no farming experience 20 years ago, approach regeneration back then, and how does he approach it now? When they take on new lands, what are the first steps, and how much has he learned over the last 20 years? What is the role of animals in regenerating the Mediterranean landscape, and how does he handle the challenging balance between running a company, needing to break even, and wanting to regenerate as quickly as possible? We also discuss the challenge of feed: is it okay to bring feed for the non-ruminants in your rotation from outside the farm when your soils can't yet sustain needy plants like wheat, barley, etc.? And if it is, how do you deal with the challenge of potentially competing for human food? We only scratched the surface because it's impossible to capture 20years of deep regeneration in just one hour, but we tried and we hope you enjoyed listening to it as much as we did recording it.https://investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/marco-carbonara---------------------------------------------------Join our Gumroad community, discover the tiers and benefits on www.gumroad.com/investinginregenag. Support our work:Share itGive a 5-star ratingBuy us a coffee… or a meal! www.Ko-fi.com/regenerativeagriculture----------------------------------------------------More about this episode on https://investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/marco-carbonara.Find our video course on https://investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/course.----------------------------------------------------The above references an opinion and is for information and educational purposes only. With his decarbonization, refugee empowerment, and “human optimization” organization to.org, he's creating deep impact through various design and development projects in refugee settlements—including the Bidi Bidi Performing Arts Center, completed last year in Uganda—and empowering individuals and communities via what he describes as “venture philanthropy.” At The Alpina Gstaad hotel in the Swiss Alps, which he's the co-founder of, he provides exceptional hospitality experiences that subvert certain traditional industry codes, fostering a relaxed but elevated environment. On the episode, recorded in front of a live audience at The Lobby “hospitality event” in Copenhagen earlier this fall, Mimran discusses his big-picture view of the word hospitality; how a family tragedy led him and his brother to found to.org; and his bold vision for building transformative spaces for refugees.Special thanks to our Season 10 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Nachson Mimran[00:44] The Lobby[03:46] to.org[09:37] The Alpina Gstaad[09:37] Jean Claude Mimran[11:00] Marcel Bach[13:47] Arieh Mimran[19:29] Pangaia[23:28] Regenerate[23:28] Kakuma Refugee Settlement[23:28] Sumayya Vally[26:04] Hassell[26:04] Xavier De Kestelier[27:06] Bidi Bidi Performing Arts Centre[27:06] Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement[27:49] Mike Zuckerman[27:49] Nakivale Refugee Settlement[32:11] The Throne[38:16] Kutupalong Refugee Settlement[48:09] André Balazs

Can my body regenerate?

It would be quite a superpower to regrow entire body parts. CrowdScience listener Kelly started pondering this after a discussion with her friend on whether human tongues could regrow. Finding out that they couldn't, she asked us to investigate the extent of human regenerative abilities. Presenter Alex Lathbridge travels to Vienna, a hotbed of research in this area. He meets an animal with much better powers of regeneration than humans - the axolotl. In Elly Tanaka's lab he finds out how she studies their incredible abilities – and shows off his new axolotl tattoo. Why can these sweet-looking salamanders regrow entire limbs while we can't even regrow our tongues? Palaeontologist Nadia Fröbisch has looked into the evolutionary origins of regeneration, and it goes a lot further back than you might think. And in fact, even humans are constantly regenerating, by renewing the building blocks of our bodies: cells. New cells grow and replace old ones all the time – although, in some parts of the body, we do keep hold of the same cells throughout our lives. However, cell turnover isn't the same as regrowing entire organs or limbs. But can we grow new body parts in the lab instead? We meet Sasha Mendjan, who creates heart organoids using our cells' innate ability to self-organise. How far off are we from implanting organs, grown from a patient's stem cells, back into the human body?
