Order of Service: - Prelude - The Third Article: Sanctification (p. 32): I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. What does this mean? I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. - Hymn 220 - From Eternity, O God: vv. 1, 2, 4, 5 - Ephesians 1:3-6: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. - Devotion - Prayer - Hymn 212 - Lord Jesus, Thou the Church's Head - Blessing - Postlude Service Participants: Chaplain Don Moldstad (Preacher), Rev. Prof. Mark DeGarmeaux (Organist)

Sean Carroll is creating a profoundly new approach to sharing physics with a broad audience, one that goes beyond analogies to show how physicists really think. He cuts to the bare mathematical essence of our most profound theories, explaining every step in a uniquely accessible way. Quantum field theory is how modern physics describes nature at its most profound level. Starting with the basics of quantum mechanics itself, Sean Carroll explains measurement and entanglement before explaining how the world is really made of fields. You will finally understand why matter is solid, why there is antimatter, where the sizes of atoms come from, and why the predictions of quantum field theory are so spectacularly successful. Fundamental ideas like spin, symmetry, Feynman diagrams, and the Higgs mechanism are explained for real, not just through amusing stories. Beyond Newton, beyond Einstein, and all the intuitive notions that have guided homo sapiens for millennia, this book is a journey to a once unimaginable truth about what our universe is. Sean Carroll is Homewood Professor of Natural Philosophy at Johns Hopkins University, and Fractal Faculty at the Santa Fe Institute. He is host of the Mindscape podcast, and author of From Eternity to Here, The Particle at the End of the Universe, The Big Picture, and Something Deeply Hidden. He has been awarded prizes and fellowships by the National Science Foundation, NASA, the American Institute of Physics, the Royal Society of London, and many others. He lives in Baltimore with his wife, writer Jennifer Ouellette. His new book series, The Biggest Ideas in the Universe, includes one volume on Space, Time, and Motion, and this new volume on Quanta and Fields. Shermer and Carroll discuss: the measurement problem in physics • wave functions • entanglement • fields • interactions • scale • symmetry • gauge theory • phases • matter • atoms • time • double-slit experiment • superposition • directionality in nature • the multiverse • known unknowables • Is there a place for God in scientific epistemology?

Sean Carroll joins me to discuss his magnificent new book, The Biggest Ideas In the Universe. Sean is an American theoretical physicist and philosopher who specializes in quantum mechanics, gravity, and cosmology. He is the Homewood Professor of Natural Philosophy at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He has been a contributor to the physics blog Cosmic Variance, and has published in scientific journals such as Nature as well as other publications, including The New York Times, Sky & Telescope and New Scientist. He is known for atheism, critique of theism and defense of naturalism. He has appeared on the History Channel's The Universe, Science Channel's Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman, Closer to Truth (broadcast on PBS), and Comedy Central's The Colbert Report. Carroll is the author of Spacetime And Geometry, a graduate-level textbook in general relativity, and has also recorded lectures for The Great Courses on cosmology, the physics of time and the Higgs boson. He is also the author of four other popular books: From Eternity to Here about the arrow of time, The Particle at the End of the Universe about the Higgs boson, The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself about ontology, and Something Deeply Hidden about the foundations of quantum mechanics. He began a podcast in 2018 called Mindscape, in which he interviews other experts and intellectuals coming from a variety of disciplines, including "[s]cience, society, philosophy, culture, arts and ideas" in general. He has also published a Youtube video series entitled "The Biggest Ideas in the Universe" which provides physics instruction at a popular-science level but with equations and a mathematical basis, rather than mere analogy. The series has become the basis of a new book series with the installment, "The Biggest Ideas in the Universe: Space, Time, and Motion". https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/ https://twitter.com/seanmcarroll Mindscape Podcast on Apple: https://bold.org/scholarships/mindscape/ Connect with me:

A Greater Sense of God - Part 10: From Eternity to Eternity On January 28, 1986, 7 Space Shuttle Challenger astronauts exited gravity and entered eternity. President Reagan gave quite a speech that day, paraphrasing the poetry of an Air Force volunteer: they “slipped the surly bonds of earth … and touched the face of God.” To touch the face of God suggests intimacy, as with someone we know well. In the Bible, we often find expressions such as “seeking God's face” to describe prayer, and occasionally “the softening of his face” which suggests soothing, possibly by touching. One of the most amazing revelations about God in the Bible is that he wants you and me to become intimate with him - and the goal of this book, starting with God's revelation to the prophet Ezekiel, is quite simply to help that become a reality.

It was written by Luther toward the end of his life for a meeting with the Catholic Church that ended up never happening. This short, and surprisingly devotional document serves as Martin Luther's "last will and testament." In it Luther shows how numerous Catholic doctrines conflict with the simple gospel, and therefore cannot be allowed to stand. Come join us for a peak into this little known gem of the Reformation. The boundaries of science are clear, and can be demarcated by the concept of falsifiability. Or so we learn in our science classes. But with some areas of science, falsifiability is not the critical feature, and may be impossible on theoretical or empirical grounds. Worrying about falsifiability might even get in the way of interesting ideas. With us to discuss the history of problems in science and falsifiability is Sean Carroll, a leading physicist and science communicator. Sean received a BS in astronomy and astrophysics from Villanova University in 1988, and a PhD in astronomy from Harvard University in 1993. He is a research professor of theoretical physics at the California Institute of Technology and an External Professor at the Santa Fe Institute. His research interests include cosmology, astrophysics, and general relativity. Sean regularly appears in the media to discuss science, and he is the host of the podcast Mindscape. He is also the author of popular science books, including From Eternity to Here, The Particle at the End of the Universe, Something Deeply Hidden, and The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself. In this conversation we discuss the concepts of an afterlife, black holes and entropy, time travel, the multiverse, and hierarchy theory, all in the context of what is science, how we should judge science, and the importance, or not, of falsifiability.

C’mon, it’s lovely weather for a podcast together with you! In our fa-la-la-last episode of 2020, Jocelyn and Bradley are celebrating Sir Isaac Newton’s 378th birthday with some Newtonmas caroling and a rousing discussion of physicists’ favorite fetish . . . We are referring, of course, to unification. The hosts consider whether the desire for a singular “theory of everything” can be traced back to Newton’s work, which was the first to bring the terrestrial and celestial realms under the same set of physical laws. They discuss the ironic fact that gravity—the original unifying force in the cosmos—is now the major obstacle to achieving a single, unified theory in physics. Finally, they consider possible motivations behind the quest for unification, and they debate whether a single, overarching theory is possible or even desirable. But just because our theories aren’t unified doesn’t mean we can’t be! Snuggle up together like birds of a feather (virtually, of course) and enjoy this holiday musical extravaganza we made just for you, friends. Bang! "This is the wonderful thing about physics. A very simple set of equations makes predictions that are hard to wriggle out of. So if General Relativity is right, with pretty good confidence you can extrapolate back in time to what was happening not at the Big Bang itself but to the first few seconds after the Big Bang." Physicist Sean Carroll is here talking all things space and time. With a gift for explanations of complex subjects that anyone can understand, he addresses some of the issues we all wonder about from time to time. What was happening "before" the Big Bang? What is time travel? How does the influence of Einstein in a way reign supreme over the entire field of theoretical physics, even in the 21st century? Join this wide-ranging conversation as Sean Carroll and Daniel journey through our universe. It is thought-provoking and enlightening at the same time. Sean Carroll is a theoretical physicist at the California Institute of Technology. His research focuses on fundamental issues in quantum mechanics, gravitation, statistical mechanics, and cosmology. He has wide-ranging interests, including in philosophy, complexity theory, and information. Carroll is an active science communicator, and has been blogging regularly since 2004. His textbook "Spacetime and Geometry" has been adopted by a number of universities for their graduate courses in general relativity. He is a frequent public speaker, and has appeared on TV shows such as The Colbert Report and Through The Wormhole with Morgan Freeman. He has produced a set of lectures for The Teaching Company on dark matter and dark energy, and another on the nature of time. He has served as a science consultant for films such as Thor and TRON: Legacy, as well as for TV shows such as Fringe and Bones. His 2010 popular book, "From Eternity to Here," explained the arrow of time and connected it with the origin of our universe. "The Particle at the End of the Universe," about the Large Hadron Collider and the quest to discover the Higgs boson, was released November 2012. "The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself" will appeared in 2016. ----------------- www.talkingbeats.com Please consider supporting Talking Beats with Daniel Lelchuk via our Patreon: patreon.com/talkingbeats In addition to early episode access, bonus episodes, and other benefits, you will contribute to us being able to present the highest quality substantive, long-form interviews with the world's most compelling people. Welcome to the 8th podcast episode of this side series, the Podcast Spotlight. In this episode, we talk with Bill Poorman and Nikolaj Groeneweg, co-hosts of the Singapore-based podcast We don't mean to dwell but...as they introduce the following 2 podcasts: Podcast 1: The Sinica Podcast The Sinica Podcast is part of the SupChina network, a platform for on-the-ground perspectives on politics, economics, technology, and culture. It is hosted by the enigmatic Kaiser Kuo, a freelance writer and musician, formerly of various rock outfits such as Tang Dynasty and Spring and Autumn.  Generally, episodes are presented in a discussion format, and feature guests from media and academia to talk on all sorts of topics including US-China relations, Chinese foreign policy, Hacking, and much more. In the first episode of the wonderfully-titled Nu Voices podcast, hosts Joanna Chiu and Alice Xin Lui lament on how the narrative on China is always presented with a western tinge. The Sinica Podcast, in this vein, can be seen as a defiant response. Stories and perspectives told by native Chinese, or by individuals who have studied and lived in China. In this sense, if your media diet is dominated by western outlets - your New York Times, your Wall Street Journals - then this podcast might a little jarring. But, if you are the kind of person who appreciates authenticity and is genuinely curious about China, then this is definitely a podcast for you. Podcast 2: Mindscape by Sean Carroll By day, Sean Carroll is a Research Professor of theoretical physics at the California Institute of Technology. By night, he is host of Mindscape, a straightforward conversation-style podcast with intellectuals in fields spanning science, society, philosophy, culture, and so on. Aside from this, Carroll is also the author of various titles such as The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself, The Particle at the End of the Universe: How the Hunt for the Higgs Boson Leads Us to the Edge of a New World, From Eternity to Here: The Quest for the Ultimate Theory of Time, and Spacetime and Geometry: An Introduction to General Relativity. Fair warning here, albeit the informal style of the show, the topics discussed are not for the casual listener. Unless you were steeped in these topics as well, you might be better off finding other podcasts to fill your gym workout or your commute to work. However, if you take these topics seriously, and are patient enough to invest your attention well, then this podcast can be richly rewarding. Where traditional conversational podcasts engage listeners in personal stories and relatable anecdotes, Carroll's Mindscape tries to break down incredibly technical subjects in an almost nonchalant manner. It's still not an easy listen, but there is incredible insight and perspective that can be learned through each episode. Music by Pandrezz: Takin' you for a ride Once again special thanks to Bill Poorman and Nikolaj Groeneweg for being such amazing guests on this episode. Special thanks to Bill for graciously inviting me to his home and allowing me to record with his equipment, it truly was an absolute pleasure, and I am incredibly grateful for the gesture. Also, on a personal note, I would never have thought that out of all places, podcasting would be where I could meet people who share my concerns on moving and living abroad. Just goes to show you how powerful the medium really is. Helping people go beyond their desperation by seeking a deeper journey in their inner spiritual life is the theme of Episode 010 of the Pathway to Promise Podcast with Dr. Brad Miller. In Episode 010 Dr. Brad talks with Christian author, blogger, podcaster Frank Viola. Frank Viola is the author of over 25 books including the “Jesus Manifesto,” “From Eternity to Here”, and the upcoming release “Insurgence-Reclaiming the Gospel of The Kingdom” Dr. Brad and Frank go deep on a number of topics including the hunger and thirst for meaningfulness in life that many people have; where many people asked the question “there must be more?” The conversation that Frank and Brad have about this question of meaninglessness responds by offering various means of which people can go deeper in their search for a meaningfulness in their life. Viola contends that many people see the spiritual life as supplemental to their everyday life much like many people supplement their everyday life with music or sports. This pattern of being content with superficial spirituality is often supported by the preaching and teaching of many pastors and spiritual leaders from which many people repeat as a comforting form of spirituality which works much of the time. Viola compares this to “taking swimming lessons on dry ground.” The rub comes when people face crisis moments, moments of desperation, in which superficial spirituality is inadequate. It is in these moments of desperation that Viola tells Brad that people will either turn away from the Lord and spirituality or seek a deeper experience or journey toward the Lord. It is at this point that personal revelation can take place. It is no longer a matter of learning theoretically about the spiritual journey it is experiencing personally the incoming of Christ living in the person as described in Galatians 2:20 “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” Viola shares that his ministry is all about desperate souls who are exhausted and hungry and seek a deeper journey of meaningfulness in their spiritual life. Viola goes on to describe his own battles with overwhelm, lack of focus and lack of direction and how he took a systematic approach to deal with these challenges and become a prolific producer of content related to the deeper spiritual life. Indeed, Viola has created an online course prolificcourse.com (http://prolificcourse.com) which outlines in detail his processes and practices on productivity. Frank tells Brad about how much credence he puts on the incoming of the spiritual power of God in his life to achieve an abundant life. This supersedes “the good life” which many people aspire to based on the acquisition of worldly things and puts primacy on seeking “the abundant life” (John 10:10) which Viola states “blows this soot out of the good life.” Frank talks to Dr. Brad about the importance of emotional human relationships as the habitat in which the deeper connection to the spiritual realm takes place. The deeper journey cannot be acquired solely on its own; a connection with other people is indispensable. This includes spouses and family members as well as mentors both living and historically through reading and learning about influential people from the past. Moreover, Viola introduces the concept of “vital editable relationships.” An “editable relationship” is deeper than an accountability partner and is a person who can speak into your life to help correction to take place. Another form of vital relationship building that Viola introduces us to in this podcast is the use of mastermind groups for the kingdom of God. Mastermind groups are relatively common in the entrepreneurial world but much less so in the world of ministry leaders and pastors. Viola has led several ministry mastermind groups and has found these small group experiences are dramatically effective in helping these leaders...
