You couldn't find two different breeds of horror fans than Certified Forgotten hosts Matt Donato and Matt Monagle. So, how did they end up giving Final Destination Bloodlines the same score? In this week's Uncertified episode, the Matts talk about their vastly different experiences with the Final Destination franchise and how that informed their Bloodlines reactions. People are saying it's one of the best in the franchise ... [whispers] and people are right.
Think you've seen every possible version of the Cinderella story? Think again. In this episode of the Uncertified podcast series, Matt Donato and Matthew Monagle discuss Emilie Blichfeldt's The Ugly Stepsister, a mashup of regency tropes and body horror that has earned comparisons to The Substance. But whereas Coralie Fargeat's film leans into the grotesque, you may just find that The Ugly Stepsister is a surprisingly gentle take on unachievable body standards.

Who rules? James Ashcroft's The Rule of Jenny Pen rules. In this episode of our Uncertified podcast series, Matt Monagle and Matt Donato discuss Shudder's latest release, where pits Geoffrey Rush against John Lithgow for retirement home supremacy. At times uncomfortable, at times unforgettable, The Rule of Jenny Pen is a fascinating mash-up of elder horror themes and concepts.

In this week's episode, we're swapping an "M" for an "M" to keep the formula correct. If you're a longtime Certified Forgotten listener, you know how co-hosts Matt Donato and Matthew Monagle feel about Oz Perkins. They've debated The Blackcoat's Daughter, reviewed Longlegs, and have made their stances known. So where does The Monkey fit into their discussion? It's the least "Oz Perkins" of any Oz Perkins movie, much to Donato's pleasure. The question is, will this ultra-gory, weirdly humorous, more "Midnighter" Stephen King adaptation also work for Monagle?
In this very special episode of the Certified Forgotten podcast, Matt Monagle and Matt Donato are joined by actor and filmmaker Kate Siegel (Midnight Mass, Hush) who goes behind-the-scenes on the making of her V/H/S/Beyond segment "Stowaway" and then kicks off a fun discussion about Lesley Manning's Ghostwatch. What starts with references to The Human Centipede ends with a call to get active in your community, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
When is a spoiler not a spoiler? In Drew Hancock's Companion, one of the most important parts of the story is introduced in most of the marketing material, which begs the question as to whether you can talk about the movie without talking about... well, you know. In this episode of Certified Forgotten's Uncertified series, Matt Monagle and Matt Donato tackle this and other pressing questions tied to Companion. Here's a non-spoiler alert: one of the Matts absolutely loved it, but you'll have to listen to find out which one.
Who's ready to talk about a movie about body horror and beauty that made headlines this week? No, the other one! In this episode of the Uncertified podcast series, Matthew Monagle and Matt Donato talk about Sasha Rainbow's Grafted, a New Zealand horror film that, like many upcoming body horror releases, will get comparisons to The Substance but actually deserves them, too.
Sure, monsters and demons are terrifying, but is there anything quite as scary in 2024 as a conversation about religion? In this episode of Uncertified, Matt Monagle and Matt Donato discuss Scott Beck and Bryan Woods's Heretic, a parlor horror film with a great central performance by Hugh Grant. Come for the religious scares, stay for the crisis of faith.
Skye Riley embarks on a comeback tour for the ages — but is it worth the price of admission? Co-hosts Matt Monagle and Matt Donato are covering Parker Finn's sequel Smile 2 in this week's bite-sized Uncertified episode. Is it one of the best horror movies of 2024? Does Naomi Scott give a powerhouse performance as a possessed pop star? You're damn right. The Matts share an olive branch of agreement over Smile 2, and they'd love to tell you why.

In this week's bite-sized podcast episode, Matt Donato and Matt Monagle discuss J.T. Mollner's Strange Darling. Is it a brilliant deconstruction of tired slasher tropes? Or a pretentious mashup of screenwriting tricks? The answer to both is a resounding yes, and, at the risk of spoiling the episode, it's exactly that ambition and playfulness that makes Strange Darling one of the best horror films of the year.
What better way to celebrate Matt Monagle and Matt Donato's return from Fantastic Fest than with a Fantastic Fest release? In this episode of our Uncertified series, Monagle and Donato discuss V/H/S/Beyond, the latest (and potentially greatest) entry in the V/H/S series that features new films from filmmakers Justin Long, Kate Siegel, and Jordan Downey.

Matthew Monagle loves the Alien franchise. Matt Donato loves Fede Álvarez. But did either of them love Alien: Romulus? Listen and find out! In this week's episode of Uncertified, Matthew and Matt tackle the new Alien prequel from Álvarez, which is gorgeous, bloody, and full of creative decisions that, ah, might've looked better on paper.
Matt Monagle's favorite horror movie is The Blackcoat's Daughter, and he's been a defender of Oz Perkins since the filmmaker's beginnings. Matt Donato has not liked any of Oz Perkins' first three movies to varying degrees. Finally, at long last, the Matts talk about The Great Perkins Divide and, more importantly, their thoughts on Longlegs. Will there finally be peace amongst podcast cohosts? Can Daddy Longlegs be the first "Both Matts Approved" Perkins film?
Surprise, little angels! We're taking an intermission from HollyWEIRD coverage to discuss the year's most anticipated horror film Longlegs. In this week's minisode, The Matts chat about what they agree is one of the year's best horror films (so far). Jang Jae-hyun's Exhuma is available now on Shudder, climbing to the top of the streamer's 2024 catalog despite including bangers like Stopmotion and Infested. South Korea flexes its horror muscles yet again in a culturally rich story that Matt Donato wrote: "bobs and weaves in ways American exorcism stories couldn't fathom." High praise for Matt 1 or Matt 2 (depending on your at-home ranking).
Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa is without a doubt one of the most talented horror filmmakers of the 21st century. But would you sign up for a new NFT service just to watch his latest 45-minute movie? Matt Donato and Matt Monagle did, and they're here to tell you that Chime is, shockingly, very worth the effort.
In the first episode of Uncertified, Certified Forgotten's new series of 30-minute movie discussions, Matt Monagle and Matt Donato take on Radio Silence's Abigail. Does it get the balance between horror and comedy just right? Or does it stumble in its goal of being the best horror-comedy about ballerina vampires since, well, ever?
Who doesn't love a project? Well, Garrett doesn't when it comes to doing a tier list of every individual segment from the V/H/S anthology franchise! What's that, no guest? It's the dawn of a new era at Certified Forgotten, and Matt Donato and Matt Monagle are here to explain their vision for new episodes of the show. But new ideas doesn't mean saying goodbye to old favorites, which is why we've also got a full-sized conversation about Steven C. Miller's Under the Bed. Did Monagle like this old-school Donato favorite? Listen for yourself to find out!
There are many perks to hosting a podcast, one of which is that you can demand certain episodes. Hi, this is Matt Donato, and I demanded BJ Colangelo return to cover Darren Lynn Bousman's Devil's Carnival sequel, Alleluia! The Devil's Carnival. Everything is bigger, the stars are brighter, and we get more musical religious mayhem — but this time in Heaven. Tech N9ne, David Hasselhoff, Ted Neeley, and more new additions lend their voices to the chorus of sainted sinners, but sadly, there'd be no trilogy finale. Alleluia! is the second chapter of an unfinished story, one that deserves its last hurrah, which we talk about at length.
Inevitably, when one of your podcast co-hosts is Matt Donato, all roads lead to Doom. Not in an existential way, but in rants about the 2005 video game adaptation. In this episode, the Matts are joined by the esteemed William Bibbiani to talk about 2018's Doom: Annihilation and how the underrated reboot stacks against not only the prior film, but video game movies as a whole.
If it's Halloween, it must be Saw...unless it's released in September? The boys are joined once again by Matt Donato to discuss Saw X. We're dissecting the term "torture porn", John's empathetic yet contradictory portrayal, traps on the fly, timeline shenanigans, the most evil non-Jigsaw character of the franchise, and sequel ideas. Take a hit and pass that spooky shit!Editing Note: a couple minutes of DeVaughn's audio went missing during his movie mathNew episodes drop every Tuesday, subscribe so you don't miss out. The ultimate underground movie! This week, Peaches and Michael dig deep in celebration of 1990's TREMORS! In addition to discussing how this fan favorite brought the creature feature into the modern era, our hosts delve into the phallic nature of the Graboids. Joining the conversation is THIS ENDS AT PROM's Harmony Colangelo, whose lifetime of love for this ongoing franchise has made her the unofficial “Mayor of Perfection.” Then, CERTIFIED FORGOTTEN's Matt Donato stops by to examine why this comedic horror's legacy not only endures, but breaks new ground. From dusty daddy Fred Ward to survivalist siren Reba, this episode has it all! Go!
In this episode of "Here, There, and Everywhere," Jack Lawless sits down with the incredibly talented actress, Ella Ballentine, for an enlightening conversation about the enduring influence of The Beatles. Acting for over 10 years, Ella has been the lead of several films including “the Black Conflux” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the A24 film, “the Monster”. She's worked alongside of the notable actors such as Martin Sheen, Laurence Fishburne, Susana Sarandon, and more. She is also a winner of the Canadian Screen Award. In this interview, Jack and Ella discuss their favorite Beatles songs, talk about why the Beatles are still relevant in the 21st century, and Ella chooses three Beatles songs that would be the best introductory songs to the band. Or click here for more information: Linktr.ee/BeatlesEarth --- The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960, that comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They are regarded as the most influential band of all timeand were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr all released solo albums in 1970. Their solo records sometimes involved one or more of the others; Starr's Ringo (1973) was the only album to include compositions and performances by all four ex-Beatles, albeit on separate songs. With Starr's participation, Harrison staged the Concert for Bangladesh in New York City in August 1971. Other than an unreleased jam session in 1974, later bootlegged as A Toot and a Snore in '74, Lennon and McCartney never recorded together again. Two double-LP sets of the Beatles' greatest hits, compiled by Klein, 1962–1966 and 1967–1970, were released in 1973, at first under the Apple Records imprint. Commonly known as the "Red Album" and "Blue Album", respectively, each has earned a Multi-Platinum certification in the US and a Platinum certification in the UK. Between 1976 and 1982, EMI/Capitol released a wave of compilation albums without input from the ex-Beatles, starting with the double-disc compilation Rock 'n' Roll Music. The only one to feature previously unreleased material was The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl (1977); the first officially issued concert recordings by the group, it contained selections from two shows they played during their 1964 and 1965 US tours. The music and enduring fame of the Beatles were commercially exploited in various other ways, again often outside their creative control. In April 1974, the musical John, Paul, George, Ringo ... and Bert, written by Willy Russell and featuring singer Barbara Dickson, opened in London. It included, with permission from Northern Songs, eleven Lennon-McCartney compositions and one by Harrison, "Here Comes the Sun". Displeased with the production's use of his song, Harrison withdrew his permission to use it.Later that year, the off-Broadway musical Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road opened. All This and World War II (1976) was an unorthodox nonfiction film that combined newsreel footage with covers of Beatles songs by performers ranging from Elton John and Keith Moon to the London Symphony Orchestra. The Broadway musical Beatlemania, an unauthorised nostalgia revue, opened in early 1977 and proved popular, spinning off five separate touring productions. In 1979, the band sued the producers, settling for several million dollars in damages. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978), a musical film starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton, was a commercial failure and an "artistic fiasco", according to Ingham. Accompanying the wave of Beatles nostalgia and persistent reunion rumours in the US during the 1970s, several entrepreneurs made public offers to the Beatles for a reunion concert.Promoter Bill Sargent first offered the Beatles $10 million for a reunion concert in 1974. He raised his offer to $30 million in January 1976 and then to $50 million the following month. On 24 April 1976, during a broadcast of Saturday Night Live, producer Lorne Michaels jokingly offered the Beatles $3,000 to reunite on the show. Lennon and McCartney were watching the live broadcast at Lennon's apartment at the Dakota in New York, which was within driving distance of the NBC studio where the show was being broadcast. The former bandmates briefly entertained the idea of going to the studio and surprising Michaels by accepting his offer, but decided not to. Ballentine was born in Toronto, Canada to parents Eva and Blake Ballentine. She is a graduate of the Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto.[5] She began her acting career as a child actor on the Toronto stage production of The Railway Children, directed by Damian Cruden (2011) for Mirvish Productions.[6] She went on to appear in other stage performances, including the lead role in Numbers, at the Toronto Fringe Festival(2013),[7][8] and as Little Cosette / Young Eponine[9] in the 25th Anniversary production of Les Misérables(2013), directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell for Mirvish Productions. Also in 2013, she was invited to the Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize for Nonfiction Gala as one of the performers to read from one of the five prize-nominated titles.[10] Her first TV role came in a Hallmark Channel movie, Baby's First Christmas (2012), in which she played Karen, a primary character with Casper Van Dienin a lead role.[11] She took on her first film role in Atom Egoyan's feature, The Captive (2013), an official selection for the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.[12]She went on to share the screen with Susan Sarandon, Gil Bellows and Christopher Heyerdahl, in The Calling. In her next larger TV movie role for Lifetime's Clara's Deadly Secret[13] (2013), she played Kate[13] alongside co-stars Emmanuelle Vaugier and Richard Ruccolo. In the 2015 feature film Standoff, Ballentine portrays one of the lead characters, Bird, a young girl who finds protection with an ex-soldier (played by Thomas Jane) from a hit-man (played by Laurence Fishburne). Although the movie received mixed reviews,[14] Rene S. Garcia, Jr. of Workingauthor.com wrote "And let's not forget Ella Ballentine. I typically have no faith in child actors, but Ella strikes the perfect tone with her burgeoning independence, but emotional and physical dependency." Eoin Friel from ActionElite felt that "Ella Ballentine almost steals the movie as Bird, the girl being pursued by Sade. The poor thing goes through an absolute nightmare and manages to never be the "annoying kid" in the film; she brings genuine heart to proceedings and is essential for Carter's redemption." In an interview on Collider, Jane stated "[Ella] was pretty wonderful. She was fun, too." Ballentine's next big role cast her as co-lead in writer/director Bryan Bertino's horror film, The Monster (2016) with co-stars Zoe Kazan, and Scott Speedman. The Monster became an independent success and Ella received Fangoria magazine's 2017 Fangoria Chainsaw Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. "If horror movie performances were given Oscars, [Kazan] would be a shoo-in. Same with Ballentine. These two are so believable," wrote Staci Layne Wilson in Dread Central.[18]Bloody Disgusting, an American horror genre website, called Ballentine "The Most Badass Horror Hero of 2016".[20] According to critics, in the horror movie, The Monster "the spooky-good Ella Ballentine"[21] came up as "a minor revelation." According to the Los Angeles Times' Justin Chang "Ballentine gives a fine, fierce performance as a child wise beyond her years and unafraid of confrontation",[23] and Matt Donato from We Got This Covered writes "Ballentine rolls with the punches well for an actress her age, and this shouldn't be understated". In 2016 Ballentine began her role as Anne Shirley in the three-part TV movie adaptation of the classic Canadian novel, Anne of Green Gables. L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables (2016) was the first instalment, followed by The Good Stars (2017),then Fire & Dew (2017). The other main characters were portrayed by Martin Sheen as Matthew Cuthbert and Sara Botsford as Marilla Cuthbert. Ballentine's performance again received critical success and landed her a Canadian Screen Award (2018). "Ballentine is charming as Anne," wrote Francesca Rudkin in the New Zealand Herald. Louise Keller in Urbancinefile states "[Ballentine] is outstanding. Wide-eyed and innocent, she proffers just the right amount of worldliness as the orphan who asks for just two things as she prays for the first time. That is a lovely scene." "I was absolutely delighted by actress Ella Ballentine's portrayal of Anne Shirley. She was a worthy Anne." wrote Sarah M. Miduski. "Christmas is fast becoming my least favorite 'C' word."We're combining a coming-of-age story, a musical, a zombie-comedy, and a Christmas story all in one, ridiculously fun package with ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE. The Wives Colangelo are joined by prolific film journalist, Matt Donato, who is quite possibly this film's biggest fan on the planet. We talk about seeing ourselves on screen, the appreciation of a musical where the characters can actually sing, the surprising amount of gore for a film this heartfelt, and why Christmas horror films are so much fun.-------Become a Patron! www.patreon.com/thisendsatprom--------Follow our guest on social media! @DonatoBomb--------Find the Show on Twitter & Instagram: @ThisEndsAtPromBJ Colangelo —Twitter & Instagram: @BJColangeloHarmony Colangelo — Twitter & Instagram: @Veloci_trap_tor----------Logo Design: Haley Doodles @HaleyDoodleDoTheme Song: The Sonder Bombs 'Title': https://thesonderbombs.bandcamp.com/
Special guest Matt Donato joins us this week for a Christmas movie. But not just any Christmas movie. David Harbour plays a butt-kicking Santa Claus in the ultraviolent Violent Night, an action-comedy send-up to classics like Die Hard and Home Alone. Are we on the naughty list when it comes to liking this movie for its sick pleasures? Either way, this movie isn't getting a lump of coal from either of us this week. Violent Night is now playing in theaters, distributed by Universal. When news broke director Scott Derrickson was leaving Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2020 due to creative differences, the moviegoing internet and fans of the film's predecessor were understandably concerned. Why would such a talented director who fought so hard for the first film leave a project he was supposedly passionate about? The answer, at least partially, is the director's latest project reteaming him with his Sinister writer, C. Robert Cargill, The Black Phone. Does this movie pivoting the director back to horror live up to the bold shift in career direction? In this episode of The Cinematic Schematic, we're joined by first-time guest, Matt Donato, returning co-host, Laron Chapman, and Caleb Masters to answer that question. Based on the Joe Hill short story of the same name and set in 1978, The Black Phone follows Finney (Mason Thames), who becomes the latest in a string of kidnapped children by a part-time magician only known as “The Grabber” (Ethan Hawke). After waking up in a stripped-down basement, Finney is haunted by the ghosts of the kidnapped children who occupied the space before him. Meanwhile, his sister Gwen(Madeleine McGraw) uses every available resource to find her brother before […] The post The Black Phone – The Cinematic Schematic Review appeared first on The Cinematropolis.

Bride of Chucky introduced the first major detour in the Child's Play franchise. Adding Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany Valentine injected more comedy and self-awareness to series writer Don Mancini's macabre tale. But as audiences discovered in 2004, Chucky's world would get a lot wilder. In Mancini's directorial debut, Seed of Chucky, the killer duo become parents. In the fifth episode of our Child's Play/Chucky mega-series, Matt Donato of Certified Forgotten joins the show to help us break down how Seed of Chucky changed the series forever. We'll discuss its handling of gender identity, how it marks a dramatic turning point for Chucky (Brad Dourif), and why its release led Mancini to take the franchise back to basics. Listen in as we bid farewell to the "Chucky and Tiffany" section of the Child's Play franchise. Next up: Curse of Chucky marks a new era for the franchise, as Fiona Dourif joins the series as Nica Pierce.
