Zach Cregger has become a different voice in film. His first big break was the movie BARBARIAN (2022) which had a unique flair to it as it stretched between being grounded (and even message bringing) to over the top grindhouse. Now in 2025 his latest film, WEAPONS, has arrived and is it a great follow up or not? From IMDB: When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.WEAPONS is directed and written by Zach Cregger. The cast includes an ensemble cast including Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreidch, and Benedict Wong. With a budget of $38M USD and earned an amazing $268M USD while receiving great reviews. Your co-hosts take a look at Cregger's latest and give their thoughts.
"THIS IS WHERE THE STORY REALLY STARTS." HAPPY HALLOWEEN! To celebrate the occasion, we figured we'd take a look at one of the year's most popular horror offerings. In this episode, we're exploring two of the most talked-about horror releases of the decade — Oddity (2024) and Zach Cregger's Weapons (2025). Both films take bold, unexpected approaches to fear, blending psychological tension with social commentary and twists. We'll unpack Oddity's eerie blend of grief and the supernatural — how its haunting imagery and folklore roots create a slow-burning sense of dread — and contrast it with Weapons, Zach Cregger's ambitious follow-up to Barbarian, a sprawling, multi-narrative thriller about violence, guilt, and the fractured state of modern America._______________________________Feel free to email at silverscreenvideopodcast@gmail.com with any comments or thoughts. Listener discretion is advised. You are not ready. Weapons (2025) is one of the most original, creative, and unsettling movies to come out in years. For our special Halloween episode, we sit down with VFX Supervisor Gabriel Regentin to discuss his work with Ingenuity Studios on the smash-hit horror film, Weapons. Gabriel details his close collaboration with director Zach Cregger, whose primary goal was to ensure every visual effect felt 100% "in-camera" and unquestionably real. He shares the challenge of creating the film's signature terrifying effects and how Ingenuity Studios was brought in early to develop the look for such a massive, director-driven vision. Gabriel also walks us through his fascinating "origin story," from studying Performing Arts Technology in Michigan to navigating the 90s dot-com boom in New York with Macromedia Director and After Effects. He recounts his big break on The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, where he earned the nickname "Gatlin Gabe" for his rapid temp comps and created a shot so good it became the benchmark for the final vendor, landing him a job at Framestore and launching his career in feature films. Episode 97: Weapons Just in time for a Halloween Spooktacular, the gang is back for Season 5 of Philosophy in Film, and the reel's already spinning! First up in the tray: Zach Cregger's eerie ensemble horror Weapons (2025), where seventeen schoolchildren vanish at 2:17 a.m., forcing a town to ask: what if the monster isn't outside, but inside the story? In search of answers, Craig sounds the alarm with Producer's Notes (8:31) while Alain opens the Beauclair Synopsis (17:23), laying out the tangled threads of characters, each chasing a truth they're too afraid to face. Chris slips into Philosopher's Corner (42:55), tracing the film's vanishings through a dim reflection of screens and silence, where the real horror may be what we've grown used to losing. At The Round Table (42:40), the gang wrangles the question: Is Weapons a cautionary mirror or a funhouse for our fears? Later, Reviews (1:10:48) and Mailbag (1:24:41) let our audience testify in the court of shared dread. As always, we reflect on the philosophical and non-philosophical fissures the film fractures open, because in a town where the children vanish, silence becomes just another weapon.
** This review was recorded in September **On the twenty-fifth night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing WEAPONS (2025), from writer/director Zach Cregger. When seventeen children from the same elementary school class suddenly vanish from their homes at the exact same time one night, their small community is thrown into a state of panic and suspicion. The mystery is explored through the shifting perspectives of the children's teacher, an increasingly desperate grieving father, a troubled local cop, and other citizens whose lives are spiraling in the wake of the inexplicable tragedy. As fear and paranoia mount, these disparate characters are drawn into a chilling web of dark rituals and supernatural manipulation to uncover what truly happened to the missing children. The film clocks in at 2 h and 8 m, is rated R and we caught it in theatres but you can find it on HBO Max and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Get ready for male camaraderie, frat culture, and team sports gone wild—because this week on Live, Laugh, Larceny, we're surrounded by bros! Trevin's week starts with a petty mystery straight out of his own phone history, as someone in Kansas City keeps using his number for real estate and house rental applications. Can the true culprit finally be found, or will this housing hustle haunt him forever? Amanda's parenting dilemma hits close to home when she realizes her daughter has mistaken her for a climbing gym and shoulder parrot. It's all about teaching kids boundaries, with the usual mix of deadpan humor and relatable chaos. In Two Truths and a Lie, Trevin goes dark with a game inspired by The Death of Stalin (IFC Films). Taking a spin through modern-day dictatorships, he delivers unbelievable headlines involving Vladimir Putin, Nicolás Maduro, and Kim Jong Un—and challenges listeners to spot the fake authoritarian headline in this nightmare blunt rotation of global leaders. Amanda balances things out with a cozy fall-themed Two Truths and a Lie about pumpkins, pie, and pumpkin-spice trivia. From the world's largest pumpkin pie record to the debate over whether pumpkins are fruit or vegetable, Amanda brings seasonal chaos and a sprinkle of millennial meltdown. Then, for Storytime, Trevin blends dark comedy and social commentary in a story inspired by the upcoming Zach Cregger movie, Weapons. Based on the arrest of Charles Burgess, this satire dives into viral trends, toxic masculinity, and the absurdity of modern internet culture. What happens when an Ohio auto shop owner gets tangled in a Bitcoin knockoff modeled after a green dildo? Add in a 12-year-old girl, the WNBA, and a case of online hysteria—and you've got one unhinged headline that could only happen in 2025. Amanda closes things out by revisiting one of CrimeCon's favorite petty crimes: public urination. She shares a college party story that starts with beer and bad decisions and ends with a truly embarrassing bathroom emergency—because sometimes petty crime hits way too close to home. This week's theme ties it all together: bros everywhere. From frat parties to dictatorships, this episode proves that toxic masculinity and petty behavior go hand in hand—and we're here to laugh about it.

This week, we review Weapons (2025), a mystery‑horror film written and directed by Zach Cregger. Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Amy Madigan, Benedict Wong and others lead an ensemble cast in a story that explores loss, supernatural terror, community paranoia, and the boundaries between grief and horror. With most of a third‑grade class vanishing under inexplicable circumstances at exactly 2:17 a.m., the film follows multiple characters—teachers, parents, police—as they grapple with what could have caused it. It raises haunting questions about collective responsibility, guilt, and the unseen forces that haunt our lives. Is this nightmare more than just missing children, or is this horror one we've invited in ourselves? This week, we find ourselves in October. And you know what that means? Scary films! We kick into it with the first film by the writer/director that brought us the excellent Weapons this year. Barbarian (2022), directed by Zach Cregger.
Hello everyone! This week finds Rod and Ben talking recent watches and some news. Then, Kristen and Mac join us to discuss Zach Cregger's two recent movies, "Barbarian" and "Weapons". We go through different categories and decide which is our favorite. Do please enjoy!
A year later, we're back with yet another summer horror episode where Wickham, Colleen, and Ada talk about horror films that hit the theatres during the summer of 2025: "28 Years Later" (2025, dir. Danny Boyle), "Weapons" (2025, dir. Zach Cregger), and "Together" (2025, dir. Michael Shanks).
Jamie, Jimmy and Bob imagine a giant machine gun floating in the sky for literally no reason while they discuss Zach Cregger's script for Weapons.
Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! Demián Rugna's “When Evil Lurks” is a relentlessly creative and upsetting indie horror film from Argentina. It's also one of the very best possession movies ever made. In this episode, we're using comparisons to Robert Eggers' “The Witch” and Zach Cregger's “Weapons” to analyze the film's folk horror reckoning about children and evil. We also examine the film's paradoxical reliance on excess and restraint by doing close readings of both the most memorable moments of violence and the unnamed monster's ever-evolving creature design. #weapons2025 #zachcregger #horrormovies Zach Cregger's sophomore swing following his hit horror debut, Barbarian, is yet another big concept thriller with sprinkles of supernatural horror, mystery, and --- of course --- comedy. As a former comedy writer, Cregger's signature is becoming a tone that, despite chills and thrills, can leave you laughing more than you'd expect. Weapons has its detractors but it was largely a financial and critical success. We dive into Weapons with a full spoilercast breaking down the mysteries, the jump scares, and the movie as a whole with a full review and high-ABV beer to make things a little less scary. Cheers!
