Director Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2, Imaginary) has a new killer shark movie out now called The Devil's Mouth starring Kathryn Newton, so naturally he had to come on The Spiel talk a little bit about his Spielberg-y influences. Yes, Jaws does come up, of course, but the conversation mostly focuses on Spielberg's move into the executive arena when he, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen launched their very own movie studio and called it Dreamworks. What happens when a filmmaker is put in charge? Does that have an impact on their own films? With multiple Oscar winning films and giant blockbusters that have come out of the studio over the years, there's no question that the venture was a success, but it wasn't without its lows as well. We talk about all that and more in this new episode of The Spiel! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Jay and Mark discuss the 2026 shark film The Devil's Mouth. Directed by Jeff Wadlow and starring Kathryn Newton, Lana Condor, and a hungry bull shark, the movie follows a group of friends as they battle a bull shark while trapped in a cave. In this episode, they also talk about jellyfish gang surprise attacks, chomped turtles, and the most annoying character making the worst decisions. Enjoy!
Sharks are scary enough, but place one inside a claustrophobic cave and you get “The Devil's Mouth” — a new thriller on Prime Video from director (and former HHT guest) Jeff Wadlow, starring scream queen Kathryn Newton. Tune in as we break down that opening incident that caught us by surprise, Sara and Max's turbulent friendship that had us turning against one of them, the non-shark-related death that lingered a little too long, and of course, all the shark attacks.

Is it possible to find something fresh in a superhero series as long in the tooth as Spider-Man's? Well, thanks to solid acting, thoughtful pacing and some terrific action set pieces, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is an involving and peppy popcorn flick. In an attempt to save his friends and loved ones from harm, Peter Parker had Dr. Strange cast a spell so that no one would know him. But the arrival of a mysterious nemesis with telekinetic powers complicates matters, getting the Hulk and Punisher involved. Sadie Sink is excellent as a troubled character, but to identify her would be a major spoiler. Let's just say the Avengers Universe is expanding. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" shows that Marvel still has gas in the tank thanks to sharp direction and thoughtful production. Despite its title, the Amazon Prime thriller "The Devil's Mouth" is not a supernatural horror flick. It's a survival drama where a group of dimwitted college friends decide to swim in a notoriously dangerous cave in Thailand. Naturally, they choose the most difficult route and encounter...you guessed it...a ravenous shark. Kathryn Newton leads the cast in this predictable drama that is so cliched and annoying that you might just find yourself rooting for the shark. Thank heaven for Snoopy. His adventures in the Apple TV animated offering "There's No Place Like Home, Snoopy," are more believable than those of the kids in "The Devil's Mouth." During a yard sale, Charlie Brown's sister Sally inadvertently sells Snoopy's doghouse. As the Peanuts gang tries to figure out how to return it, they all learn a lesson about what home really means. It's a short, sweet and funny family outing.
The cult Aussie rom-com everyone's been quietly obsessed with is back for its third and final season, and if you've somehow missed it, now's the time to catch up. Its real-life married co-creators have the kind of chemistry you can't fake, backed by a scene-stealing cast of chaotic families and coworkers. Plus, The Spill team hit the premiere of the biggest superhero movie of the year — don't worry, we're keeping things spoiler-free, but we're unpacking why even the Marvel-fatigued are walking out obsessed, one surprise appearance we're still not over, and the very human story underneath it all. And if you're after something completely different, we've also got a recommendation for a tense new shark thriller set inside an underwater cave system. Think claustrophobia, friendship drama and one very angry bull shark. It isn't often you get so many genre icons in one movie, but so is the case with the Ready or Not sequel, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. The 2019 original sent Samara Weaving's star soaring and now, in film two, she's joined by two other actors who have achieved “scream queen” status. It's Sarah Michelle Gellar and Kathryn Newton. While in Austin celebrating Ready or Not's World Premiere at SXSW 2026, Gellar and Newton visited the Collider interview studio for a Collider Ladies Night conversation to cover their journeys to the Ready or Not franchise, and to tease their hopes for their futures in the genre. Den Auftakt macht „Ready or Not 2: Here I Come“, die Fortsetzung des Horror-Comedy-Hits. Mike gave out his first 5 out of 5 in over 2 years on last week’s episode. He decides to share more movies he believes are perfect and reacts to a list from Reddit of perfect films with no bad parts. Mike doesn’t think these are the ‘greatest’ movies ever made but instead the ones where nothing feels out of place, have great rewatchability and each feel effortless to watch. In the Movie Review, Mike talks about Ready or Not 2: Here I Come starring Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton. The movie picks up moments after surviving an all-out attack from the Le Domas family, Grace discovers she’s reached the next level of the nightmarish game and this time with her estranged sister Faith at her side. Mike talks about how underrated the first film was, if this one matched the intensity and why Samara Weaving as Grace is a new horror movie icon. In the Trailer Park, Mike blind reacts to the Spider-Man Brand New Day trailer. It’s coming out in theaters on July 31st and is one of his most anticipated movies of the year. First up, we're launching into orbit with the highly anticipated adaptation of Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary. Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a scientist who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory and a very important job: saving the sun.The "Rocky" Factor: The alien, Rocky, wasn't CGI! He was a physical, 3D-printed puppet controlled by a team of five puppeteers dubbed "The Rockyteers," allowing Gosling to actually improvise with his co-star.The Le Domas family might be gone, but the game is just getting started. Samara Weaving returns as Grace, but this time she's joined by her estranged sister (Kathryn Newton) as they take on the "High Council" of elite families.Fun Flix Fact: To keep the sisterly bond authentic, Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton were handcuffed together for a large portion of the shoot. They eventually had to switch to rubber handcuffs because the real metal ones were causing too many bruises during the action scenes! It's been 20 years since Al Gore's groundbreaking climate documentary changed the conversation forever. We're revisiting this Oscar-winner because it ties in perfectly with the "planetary salvation" stakes of Project Hail Mary.Fun Flix Fact: This was the first-ever documentary to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song (I Need to Wake Up by Melissa Etheridge). For our Hidden Gem, we're shouting about the twisted thriller The Good Boy. Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough star as a seemingly normal couple who kidnap a delinquent teen to "rehabilitate" him into being the perfect son.Fun Flix Fact: Stephen Graham's character, Chris, wears a very specific, slightly "off" wig throughout the film. It was designed to make him look trustworthy yet subtly unsettling—a classic Kubrickian touch from director Jan Komasa.Method Acting: To prepare for the role of the kidnapped Tommy, actor Anson Boon spent weeks in a "feral" mindset to capture the desperation of a boy living on a literal leash. And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of March 20, 2026. "Project Hail Mary" is the big release of the week and probably the best movie of the year so far… or even last year. While trying to not get listeners over-hyped, Ryan Gosling does a phenomenal job in this funny, charming and visually stunning sci-fi film based on the book of the same name from “The Martian” writer Andy Weir. Also out on the big screen, the goofy violence rules the day in "Ready or Not 2: Here I Come" which has some great actors like (Samara Weaving, Kathryn Newton, Elijah Wood) but it just didn't click for Andy--even though some people will like this horror sequel full of deals with devils, sisterly strife, and a kids game turned evil. On streaming, if you can handle some of the vulgar jokes, "Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat” is almost as funny as the first season of "Jury Duty,” with a mockumentary/realitytv vibe. The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy, with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch” (taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment) and “What to Do” on the weekend minisodes, and two deep-dives episodes a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Based in the beautiful Beehive State, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and Deseret News / KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. Today, we sit down with Ready or Not 2 directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet to discuss returning to the chaotic horror-comedy world of the original film. In this conversation, they talk about how the sequel balances terror and absurdity, how their collaboration with Samara Weaving evolved as her character Grace returns, and how filming in Hamilton and the Niagara region in Canada helped shape the larger scale and atmosphere of the film. It's a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process of building a bigger sequel while staying true to what made Ready or Not such a fan-favourite horror film.
