Dinner With Strangers: Jess Janz On The Friends We Haven't Met YetWe're more connected than ever—and lonelier than we'd like to admit. What if the answer isn't finding the right people, but simply pulling up another chair? This week, Jen sits down with writer, poet, and community-builder Jess Janz to talk about her new book, The Table Where We Meet, and the social experiment that grew into the phenomenon known as Dinner With Strangers. What began as a gathering around a table with a few curious questions has now welcomed more than a thousand people into conversations that move past small talk and into the territory we all secretly long for: belonging.Jen and Jess explore why so many of us feel disconnected, what makes a question powerful enough to crack a person open, and how vulnerability creates the conditions for genuine connection. Whether you're craving deeper friendships, navigating loneliness, or wondering how to build a bigger table in your own life, this conversation is a hopeful reminder that meaningful connection is still possible—and closer than you think. In this episode, you'll hear:The hidden costs of loneliness and our growing hunger for belongingWhy "What's your favorite movie?" might be the wrong icebreaker—and what to ask insteadWhat happens when one person chooses vulnerability firstWhy community isn't something we stumble into—it's something we createQuotes:"There's alchemy in holding a heavy dish for the person beside you, reaching across, filling water glasses. All of that is so disarming. It shouldn't be a roadblock to connection—it should be the bridge." – Jess Janz"Loneliness and helplessness is something that is weaponized in our lives right now, and so it's radical to be in community together." – Jess JanzResources Mentioned:The Table Where We Meet by Jess JanzWith StrangersJen's dinner party for her daughterAwake: A Memoir by Jen HatmakerDan ManganBuy Jess' bookGuest's Links:Website | Instagram | Facebook | TikTok | SubstackConnect with Jen!Website | Instagram | Twitter | Facebook | YouTubeThe For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy.

In this episode, I welcome back author Jonathan Janz, and do we have a lot to talk about! It begins with a recent three-book deal that he signed with Weird Tales and Blackstone Publishing for his three upcoming titles—“Marla,” “The Stars Have Left The Skies” and “Panopticon.” We dive into all three books, what they're about and the possibility of a connection between them. If that wasn't enough, the audiobook for “Marla” is set to be released on Aug. 18, by the wife-and-husband team of Patricia Santomasso and Sean Patrick Hopkins. Jonathan and I talk about what makes a really good audiobook, particularly for the horror genre. And there's more! “Marla” is in development for television, while both “The Stars Have Left The Skies” and “Panopticon” are headed for the big screen. We can't share all the details now, but do talk a bit about where they are in the process. Jonathan also shares some business insight, including the importance of just writing, regardless of whether it's your best, and a realistic look about making writing into a career. You can learn more about Jonathan and get his books at https://jonathanjanz.com.

Starting with the surprisingly complicated question, “Does a book ever actually feel finished?”, they wander into the deeper realities of creativity, friendship, identity, vulnerability, and hope. Together they explore: Why is releasing creative work emotionally complicated? The people who quietly shape our work behind the scenes. How trusted relationships help us become better artists and better humans. Why uncertainty is an essential part of every creative process. Living as a “border walker” between certainty and mystery. The importance of staying curious instead of rushing toward resolution. Why does making art ultimately become a way of making a life? Whether you're writing a book, starting a business, raising a family, or simply trying to become more fully yourself, this conversation offers an invitation to embrace the unfinished nature of the creative life. Surveillance video obtained by KMJ news partner ABC30 shows a man armed with a knife approaching Fresno City Attorney Andrew Janz’s home around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, ringing the doorbell before moving into the backyard and banging on a back door. Fresno County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested the man. Court documents show the suspect is ‘angry’ about failed restraining orders against Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto, and a probation officer. Janz said he never had prior personal contact but his office defended the city in the Casto petition. “That is why we believe that he came to my house this weekend, in the middle of the night." The suspect has a long history with the court — 21 felony and misdemeanor convictions dating back to 1988. The charges include elder abuse, sexual assault, and several DUIs. Torrez served jail time for the tear gas possession, released from prison in 2024, according to court records. Records show he is also a registered sex offender, stemming from a 1995 case. A parole report said Torrez’s performance has been “unsatisfactory.” A judge set his bail at $30,000 and issued a protective order for Janz and his family. This conversation offers a high-level, strategic deep dive into how to build a dominant, trusted, and compliant Cannabis Brand in a hyper-regulated environment. Matt Janz provides an unparalleled look at how Deep Roots Harvest translates its 'Farm to Body' commitment—the transparency of seed-to-sale vertical integration—into compelling Marketing Content that effectively bypasses competitors focused solely on price. The conversation reveals top creative strategies used to navigate Nevada's notoriously strict cannabis advertising regulations (including the rigid 71.6% minimum adult audience rule) to deliver high-impact marketing and build genuine community. Janz further dissects the dynamics of the segmented market, detailing how they leverage sales data and consumer behavior insights (e.g., the success of Helix Twist Edibles) to prioritize marketing spend across their diverse product categories. The discussion also addresses the critical task of ensuring their Digital Marketing Journey seamlessly aligns with the Physical Dispensary Experience across their six Nevada locations to drive tangible foot traffic conversion. Finally, Janz tackles the critical challenge of maintaining the brand's unique 'Nevada roots' and local focus during the transition following their acquisition by a large Multi-State Operator (MSO), offering a blueprint for avoiding brand dilution during expansion into new regional markets. Web: https://www.deeprootsharvest.c... About the brand: Deep Roots Harvest is a leading vertically integrated cannabis operation headquartered in Nevada. Our mission is built on the "Farm to Body" philosophy, ensuring unmatched quality control and transparency throughout every stage, from cultivation to the final product. Dr. Nicole Janz, author of The Write Habit planner, brings an honest perspective to the psychological barriers that prevent writers from establishing consistent creative practices. Drawing from her own journey from burnt-out academic to thriving authorpreneur, she reveals how the most common writing struggles—procrastination, avoidance, and inconsistency- often mask deeper fears about worthiness and vulnerability. This conversation goes beyond surface-level productivity advice to explore the mindset shifts necessary for sustainable creative success. Dr. Janz shares her evolution from scattered marketing efforts to community-based connection, from overwhelm to intentional business planning, and from perfectionism to self-trust. Her practical wisdom on diversifying income streams while maintaining creative energy offers a roadmap for writers seeking to build sustainable careers without sacrificing wellbeing.Perhaps most valuably, Dr. Janz models the integration of creativity and self-care. Her practices—scheduled recovery days, morning meditation, movement, and firm boundaries—demonstrate how creative productivity stems from wellbeing rather than endless hustle. As she puts it: "I'm watching my health very carefully because I have to, but also because I want to. I want to be able to be creative, and it's not possible when you're bogged down in the hamster wheel."What writing project have you been avoiding, and what might happen if you approached it with radical self-trust?Have a comment? This year, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of TeachBeyond! TeachBeyond was actually formerly known as Janz Team Ministries for over 50 years, changing its name to TeachBeyond in 2009. Listen in to hear more of the story of how TeachBeyond came about as we talk with George and Beverley Durance - well known for their family ties to the original Janz Team and their roles as former TeachBeyond President and Donor Services. “Being part of the Janz family played a huge, positive role in my life.” - Bev Durance “We said, ‘Wow, we would really like to do something for God, and we don't want to get old and wonder what it would have been like to do that.'” - George Durance “The biggest motivator [..] was just strictly a deep desire to say the same thing in the 21st century that our forefathers had said in the 20th century, and if we were going to do that, we had to change how we said that.” - George Durance “We started by praying. I think this has become a real hallmark of TeachBeyond – that we pray.” - George Durance “When you have faith, you always act. Faith is never sitting on your backside. You ask and then you act.” - George Durance “When you put your foot on the accelerator, don't take it off because you'll never find it again.” - George Durance “If you're going to cast a vision, you have to actually have a vision.” - George Durance “We see transformed lives, we see people changed across the globe, based on an educational initiative that the Holy Spirit has empowered and used.” - George Durance “Who would have guessed that I would follow in my mother's footsteps to process the donations to support this work?” - Bev Durance “We determined that we would take every opportunity to develop relationships with the donors […] Our job was to give the organization face for the many people who wanted to support the work.” - Bev Durance “I just love seeing God's hand of provision at work every day, and that transforms a person.” - Bev Durance “So how does one keep going? How does one persevere in doing good? As we know, we will reap the harvest if we keep persevering, and one of the ways is to remember right from the beginning that God has gone before and prepared hearts and that you're in the center of His will, no matter how hard or discouraged you feel.” - George Durance “Our missionaries are doing this – communicating the Gospel and discipling students in educational settings around the world – and I think my uncles would be so pleased to see the work they started continuing in this way.” - Bev Durance Learn more about TeachBeyond's annual Day of Giving here! SaaStr 759: 5 Metrics that Matter When Raising Your SaaS Series A and Series B Round with Christoph Janz, Partner at Point Nine Capital  What data and metrics do you need to convince SaaS investors you're in good shape and aligned with what they care about? Christoph Janz, Partner at Point Nine Capital, shares 5 key insights during this year's SaaStr Annual. These metrics are more targeted to those preparing for a Series A or B round and could make the difference between an excited-to-invest-in-you investor and a pass. Why should you spend the time getting your act together before fundraising? If your data is self-explanatory, in good shape, easy to understand, and aligned with what investors care about, you avoid a lot of unnecessary back and forth. Less time clarifying what your metrics mean results in more time to talk to more investors in parallel and increased confidence with each of those investors. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SaaStr hosts the largest SaaS community events on the planet.
