Who rules? James Ashcroft's The Rule of Jenny Pen rules. In this episode of our Uncertified podcast series, Matt Monagle and Matt Donato discuss Shudder's latest release, where pits Geoffrey Rush against John Lithgow for retirement home supremacy. At times uncomfortable, at times unforgettable, The Rule of Jenny Pen is a fascinating mash-up of elder horror themes and concepts.
Directed by James Ashcroft, The Rule of Jenny Pen is the New Zealand psychological horror film based on Owen Marshall's short story of the same name. Recovering from a stroke at an assisted living facility, a judge (Geoffrey Rush) encounters a psychopathic patient (John Lithgow) who uses a hand puppet to abuse fellow residents.
Send us a textWe close out our “Forgotten Dreams” theme with the 1996 film Shine, the true story of piano prodigy David Helfgott, who cracks under the pressure of his overbearing father and his attempt to master Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3. Karl's shakeup was that the film must have won an award (this one won several, mostly for star Geoffrey Rush), so we also discuss whether we ourselves have ever won an award, some award show history, and whether a movie winning awards would compel us to watch it.

Geoffrey Rush has maintained a long-running acting career - and his latest film is set to explore the horrors that can come with old age. Rush has made a name for himself on the big screen, appearing in films like Shakespeare in Love, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The King's Speech - to name a few. He's set to star in Kiwi director James Ashcroft's The Rule of Jenny Pen, a film set in a drab retirement home in the North Island. "It's about bullying, really. And I asked James - why did you write this? He said - I've got three daughters and they're all less than 12 and I've always been intrigued by the genre of thriller or mystery or horror, but I'm more concerned about consequences." Oscar Month continues! Bev's couple of weeks off begins! She's not here to talk about The King's Speech, which is a classy movie that ended up being a huge hit, even though it's about a group of people that Ryan has never liked: the royals? A monarchy? In a democracy? Yet, credit where it's due, Tom Hooper does an admirable job of making a non-fan care about the king of England and his enunciation---and also Nazi-related---troubles. Colin Firth won gold for his work as the stuttering Prince Albert/King George VI who gets a job he never wanted while his supportive wife (Helena Bonham Carter) and unorthodox speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush) are just about his only support system. The King's Speech is often quite touching and it's even inspirational, showing a privileged man have to deal with confidence issues, loneliness, his uncaring fellow royals and duty to his country. So don't storm off in anger. Just tune into the 651st episode of Have You Ever Seen and listen to one man's speech...about a speech. Well, Actually: while Slumdog Millionaire started the trend of the entire cast & crew in attendance at the Oscars going up on stage when the film wins Best Picture, the entire LOTR: ROTK cast & crew DID go up on stage the year THEY won Best Picture. Also, Helena Bonham Carter plays "Bellatrix Lestrange" in the Harry Potter series, not "Beatrix". We are sponsored by the coffee that's fit for a king or a queen: Sparkplug Coffee. It's a week for horror on Spoilerpiece. Megan and Dave talk about THE RULE OF JENNY PEN (2:10), featuring Geoffrey Rush as a judge recovering from a stroke, John Lithgow as a sadist, and Jenny Pen as Lithgow's evil puppet cohort. Then Evan joins in for STARVE ACRE (20:59), in which two grieving parents find a mummified oak tree and tend to a reanimated rabbit that may or may not be malevolent. Yeah, it's weird. Over on Patreon, we talk about the 2025 Oscars.
Will screenlife movies become the found footage of the next generation? Though there have been some noticeable outliers, the genre has not really taken off with audiences. But what if you do one that is also a creature feature plus has family drama. We also review an uncomfortable psychological thriller starring Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow. This year Blake watched the Oscars while Nathaniel could care less about them. We talk about Demi Moore not winning for The Substance, Quentin Tarantino's amazing casting track record, and record long speeches. The Ready or Not sequel has added a notable name to its cast. Are we ready for it?There is something about screenlife movies that just does not work for us. Host was great and Dashcam was fun, but they usually end up being more frustrating than anything else. Bloat was no different as the filmmaking took us out of it on a number of levels. We could not even imagine why it was done in this style to being with.If the movie were shot in a more traditional style it probably would have been better, but that does not mean it would have been good. The writing is awful presenting the audience with characters that are shallow at best. There is no payoff for the monster and the ending is downright confusing. Maybe we should stick to found footage. The Rule of Jenny Pen was discomforting for different reasons. When you have Rush and Lithgow leading the way, you now acting is not going to be a problem. The atmosphere is a bleak one that only gets darker as the plot progresses. Before long, things have escalated to levels that are almost impossible to watch. But you do not want to look away. That is what makes it such a great film. It is touch to watch and filled with a sense of sadness and hopelessness. It also has two compelling leads and a riveting story. The Rule of Jenny Pen will is an unforgettable watch - for better and for worse. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. [School of Movies 2025] An extremely long-awaited show on a game-changer of a blockbuster movie. The first Pirates film, released in 2003 before Lord of the Rings had completed brought the world many things: A fantabulous extravaganza of practical effects, combined with a surprisingly light smattering of digital VFX that would be leaned into a lot harder later down the line, The notion that the swashbuckler could still do big business (the hidden caveat was that Johnny Depp being strange absolutely must be present) Keira Knightley as a leading lady, Gore Verbinski as a major director, the supposition that audiences would flock to cinematic adaptations of Disney park rides (they won't, just this one. See above regarding Johnny Depp) and Geoffrey Rush as an all-time iconic big-screen presence embodying the most consistently enjoyable pirate of all time. But there's more going on, beneath the frothing surface, a fantastically witty, urbane and efficient script by Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott, one of the greatest scores ever composed (in a shockingly short amount of time) and Orlando Bloom's character actually being quite good, especially when held against Jack Davenport's Lawful Neutral Commodore James Norrington. This was a commission for Lincoln Alpern and features clips from the best audiodrama I've ever composed; Panther Soul, and the first chapter of the brand new Dracula adaptation Castle of the Moon. Our 2010 retrospective has come to an end. We say goodbye with that year's Oscar Best Picture winner, "The King's Speech," starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter, Guy Pearce & Timothy Spall. Directed by Tom Hooper and brilliantly written by David Seidler, the inspiring true story is among the hotly debated Best Picture winners of all time. While the merits of its Oscar wins are certainly discussed, we primarily want to know how the film holds up on its own fourteen years later. Join Lauren LaMagna, Josh Parham, Alyssa Christian, Dan Bayer, and me as we discuss our thoughts on the performances, writing, direction, cinematography, its awards season success, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. “I'll say it: Chris Kattan? Best part of this movie!” - Steve On this week's episode, we're finally chatting about the “bad-ass” horror remake, House on Haunted Hill! Did any of those numerous deleted scenes maybe have more character details by any chance? Why couldn't Jeffrey Combs have played a larger role in this movie? How does Geoffrey Rush look so much like Vincent Price in this and they refused to come out and say it— the guy's named Price to boot, so c'mon! And did anybody else have the Mandela Effect bad memory that Kattan's character got it in the first fifteen minutes? PLUS: Haunted houses need companionship too! House on Haunted Hill stars Geoffrey Rush, Famke Janssen, Taye Diggs, Peter Gallagher, Chris Kattan, Ali Larter, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Max Perlich, Lisa Loeb, James Marsters, Peter Graves, and Jeffrey Combs as Dr. Vannacutt; directed by William Malone.
