On today's show Chris Ryan joins Sean to unpack the year 2025 in horror movies. But first, they hit a handful of movie news headlines, including rumors of a new trailer coming out in December for Christopher Nolan's ‘The Odyssey,' Michael Mann's recent comments about the production of ‘Heat II,' and Eva Victor being cast in Tony Gilroy's ‘Behemoth!' (2:02). They then cover Scott Derrickson's sequel, ‘The Black Phone 2' (starring Ethan Hawke and Mason Thames), which they both found quite disappointing (10:32). Next, they reflect on the current state of horror as a genre and explore why they feel it's in a weird place right now (26:07). Later, Chris and Sean share their favorites of the year (36:16) before Alex Ross Perry joins the show to discuss his contribution to V/H/S/Halloween. Perry talks us through his thought process and points out why finding what he personally finds scary is the most important part (1:02:50). Finally, they have an extensive conversation surrounding horror anthologies, where they identify what defines a good horror anthology and share their personal favorites (1:22:58). It's that time of year again! We've hit the mid-year point, and everyone wants to know what the best horror movies of the year are so far. Certified Forgotten's Matt Donato is in charge of this special episode, and has enlisted the help of Bloody Digsuting's Meagan Navarro because, when you can, why not bring in the best? Listen in to their 30-minute discussion, and maybe you'll leave with a few titles to put on your radar.
Wait… wait a minute. *They're real?* Like, actual people? With arms and legs and vocal cords and the whole thing?? I thought Clay and Amanda were just really well-programmed horror podcasting AIs, beamed directly into my headphones by some cursed Spotify algorithm designed to recommend creepy movies and make me question my life choices. But no—apparently they're corporeal, walking around like real humans, and this week they've gone LIVE, baby! That's right, this is *The Rotten Horror Picture Show*'s first-ever live episode, recorded at the Waltham Public Library! I mean… a library? Full of people? And not a single CAPTCHA test in sight? Incredible. And what better movie to kick off this real-world appearance than the number one movie on the Rotten Tomatoes 200 Best Horror Movies of All Time list, Steven Spielberg's 1975 masterpiece of maritime mayhem, *Jaws*? It's the original summer blockbuster, the reason you still hesitate before dipping a toe into the ocean, and arguably the scariest thing to ever feature a mechanical shark that constantly broke down. Clay and Amanda take a deep dive into the depths of dread, discussing killer soundtracks, boat sizes, and how a film can be equal parts terrifying and a masterclass in character-driven tension. So tune in to this historic live recording! Marvel at the sound of human voices bouncing off actual library walls! Hear the gasps of the audience as they realize, in real time, that the mayor of Amity Island is the real villain. And most importantly, help me come to terms with the fact that I've been emotionally bonding with two podcast hosts who are not, in fact, haunted chatbots.I mean, I guess it makes sense… no AI would ever have taste *this* good. And be sure to hit up patreon.com/thepenskyfile to hear all the coverage of remakes and reboots this year!
Ep. 148: Better Late Than Never - Best Horror Movies of 2024 Pt 1 by Mike "Ghostman" Pickle & James Rivera
The final half of Ghostman & Rivera's 'Best Horror Movies of 2024.
In this week's episode, we're swapping an "M" for an "M" to keep the formula correct. Certified Forgotten's Matt Donato covered South by Southwest 2025 from start to finish, but Matthew Monagle did not. So, Donato called in backup to help with an entire episode dedicated to the horror films of SXSW. Please welcome back Bloody Disgusting's Meagan Navarro, one of the tippy-top horror journalists working today. Listen in to hear about all the rad horror titles you should keep an eye out for in the future!
The New Flesh returns for a special midweek episode as Brett and Jesse count down their 10 favorite horror movies of the year! It was a great year for the genre. Do you agree?

Well, that was fun! 2024, though it started slow, managed to pack in quite a few worthy films. The six critics of The Scariest Things debated who deserved a spot in the top 10, and there was a wide spread of picks. There were a few standouts most of us agreed to, but to find out, you'll have to listen to the podcast!
Before we go out with the old and in with the new, your fearless crew is taking one last look back at 2024. Mike, Devaughn, Steven, Brian, and Ariel are all on hand to unveil their top ten genre films of the past year. While there was near unanimous consensus on our number one movie of the year, each of lists represent just how wide a net horror covers. From horror comedies, to noirish thrillers, slashers, the supernatural, serial killers, body horror, teen angst, coming out horror and classic monster pictures, we cover just about every major subgenre in our five lists. Plus, near fisticuffs break out over Nosferatu. Strap in for pure chaos deal listeners as we have all this, plus a visit from our dear friend Admiral Ackbar.

Over the past year, we've been meeting monsters. Now… it's time to rank ‘em.We've collected the data, synthesized insights, and conducted hours of analysis. By that, we of course mean we ranked all the monsters we've met since *last* Halloween. If you're more of a visual person, it's kinda like we took our three individual lists, put them through the shunting process from Society, and created one bigger, mutated, bloodier super list. So, expect a lot of surprised reactions, a few jump scares, and the likely possibility of bloodshed.
