"Some days the headlines weigh heavy on my heart, and the chaos of our world feels insurmountable. And I return to the liturgy of making bread, which beckons me to stretch and fold, knead and kneel, to taste and see the Master Baker at work. I sink my teeth into a slice of homemade sourdough slathered with butter and remember the miracle anew."Leave a comment for Dorina: https://incourage.me/?p=252186--DaySpring's faith-filled cards are for every season and every reason. This week, I'm talking to Reka and Dorina, the founders of Budapest Racquet Society—or BRS—in, you guessed it, Budapest. We're in the early days of this new tennis club movement, but something exciting is definitely happening at the intersection of social community and sports. Running and training have paved the way, and now tennis is stepping into the spotlight—and it's emerging fast. For a certain generation, the concept of social community is second nature. People are craving connection and movement, whether it's reconnecting with something they loved as kids or finally trying something they've always wanted to but found intimidating. Tennis has traditionally carried that air of exclusivity, but these new clubs are flipping the script. They're all about connection, community, and a genuine passion for the sport. BRS is a perfect example, making serious waves in Budapest's tennis scene. In this episode, we dive into Reka and Dorina's tennis backgrounds, the tennis culture in Hungary, and why Budapest seems especially welcoming to this new style of club. What I love about BRS and others like it is their focus on individuality and inclusivity. On court, with a racquet in hand, you're simply a tennis player—no clichés required. At its core, the draw of these clubs goes beyond the sport. It's about fun—the joy of being on court, moving, learning, and improving alongside others. Honestly, life doesn't get much better than that.A huge thanks to Dorina and Reka for sharing their time and for what they're doing for tennis in Budapest. I'm a big fan of the sport and all these new clubs popping up around the world. As always, share this pod with like-minded people or anyone who's thought about getting into tennis or racquet sports but didn't know where to start. Chances are, there's a club like BRS in a city near you—find them, get on court, and get involved. From Chris and me, peace.

In this episode of A is for Architecture, I was joined by the University of Queensland's Dr Dorina Pojani to discuss her book Trophy Cities: A Feminist Perspective on New Capitals (Edward Elgar Publishing 2021). We explore how new capital cities –Brasilia, Canberra, Abuja, Sejong, Astana and even Washington DC – are conceived of as totalized projects, dominant visions competing for prestige through iconic architecture and mega-projects - often at the expense of local communities. From gentrification and political power to inequality and urban branding, this conversation uncovers who really benefits from these grand visions. It's a banger, believe. Dorina can be found at her workplace, and on LinkedIn. Trophy Cities is linked above.

We have been talking extensively about housing this season but have not really looked at the identity of the cities within which it exists. In today's episode, we zoom out a little to take stock of new capital cities and discuss their planning through the theoretical lens of feminism. Dorina Pojani is Associate Professor of urban planning at The University of Queensland, Australia. Her latest books are Trophy Cities: A Feminist Perspective on New Capitals (Edward Elgar, 2021) and Alternative Planning History and Theory (Routledge, 2023). Are you grieving a loss? You likely are. We experience loss every day. Sometimes, it's smaller, like moving away from a friend or a city you loved, and sometimes, it's extremely significant, like the death of a family member. But through it all, we can be looking for God's glory. And when we search for it, we will see it. My guest, Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young, is sharing her personal story of loss and the miraculous gift God gave her family through it. She's encouraging us to chase God's glory through our grief, too. SummaryIn this episode, Becky Keife interviews Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young, author of the children's book 'Kailani's Gift.' The book explores themes of perseverance, developing gifts, and the importance of community support. Dorina shares the story of Kailani, a young girl who wants to learn a traditional Filipino dance called the Tininkling. Despite facing challenges and setbacks, Kailani perseveres with the help of her family and eventually performs the dance at her grandparents' anniversary party. Their conversation also touches on the importance of trusting God's timing, embracing cultural roots in storytelling, and celebrating diversity in stories.TakeawaysPerseverance is key in developing our gifts, even when we face challenges and setbacks.God delights in the process of our growth and development, not just the final product. The orientation of our hearts, focused on worshiping and honoring God, is more important than striving for perfection.Trusting God's timing is essential, as He has plans that are higher than ours.Connect with (in)courage: Facebook & Instagram for daily encouragement, videos, and more! "God grants us gifts and talents that need to be tended over time. Gifts and talents take time to bloom." Dorina's new kid's book, Kailani's Gift, echoes this same message. Kailani needs to have the courage to try something new. Even though she doesn't master it right away, Kailani perseveres. The tinikling dance is challenging, but it is also rewarding when she can offer it as a gift to her grandparents. We all might be clumsy with new things at first, but if we push through the awkwardness and have fun, we can bless others with what we have learned.Enter to WIN a copy (giveaway open to US addresses only and closes on 4/21/24): https://incourage.me/?p=238371--Encourage all the moms in your life with heartfelt messages of God's love! 'It's kind of like sacred medicine or sacred plant medicine in a way where it meets you where you are, based on your intentions, on your setting, your relationships and everything. Where that space in between is the most powerful piece and it's us holding the container and guiding people in certain directions. But then, here's the silence: go run with it and see what comes up for you'. - Kamea Chayne, host of the alchemize program and the Green Dreamer podcast, March 28, 2024, conscient podcast e161This is a special episode of the conscient podcast about Green Dreamer's alchemize program, which is a ‘10-week audio-based program of daily creative prompts and imagination practices'. This episode features 4 of my fellow course participants: singer and music researcher annais linares, bass player and music researcher Ben Finley, climate educator Barbara Leckie, social innovator and educator Michelle Baldwin and myself in conversation with Kamea Chayne, host of the alchemize program and of the Green Dreamer podcast. I also want to mention that a 6th member of our alchemize circle, educator Dorina Husain, was not able to attend this recording on March 28th, 2024.Our group of 6 alchemize participants met every Saturday morning during the course to discuss what we were experiencing and check in with each other. What you're about to hear is our exchange with Kamea about our experience with alchemize and how it is, literally, transforming our lives. Now, admittedly, the alchemize program is not specifically about art and the ecological crisis, as per the mandate of this podcast, however, this series of 40 creative exercises integrates all kinds of artistic and cultural practices - storytelling, drawing, soundscape composition, poetry, and much more - and I consider alchemize as a whole, to be a work of art. A work of art that you can come in and out of. A process that invites the participant, the learner, to both grow, and let go. This 55 minute exchange concludes the way we did at every Saturday alchemize circle meeting, with a moment of gratitude and an example of what brought us joy on that day. Please see https://www.greendreamer.com/alchemize for more information on the program. Big thanks to my alchemize circle colleagues, annais, Ben, Barbara, Michelle and Dorina and also warm thanks to Kamea and her team at Green Dreamer for their brilliant, generous and spirited work.Spoiler alert: if you plan to take the alchemize program and prefer not to hear about some of the exercises then please listen to this episode AFTER you do alchemize. If, however, you want to know more about our experience with the course in order to better understand how it works, then listen to it before doing the program,.. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHere is a link for more information on season 5. "Winter warrants hope. I think about the winter of grief I endured after my husband's death. God showed up in that season with His comforting presence. I think about the winter of rejection in my career when I kept coming up against closed doors. God built up my courage and resilience. I think about the winter of loneliness when I wondered who my true friends were. God walked with me in the darkness and provided companionship. We may feel buried in the snow, but we may just be on the brink of a breakthrough."Leave a comment for Dorina: https://incourage.me/?p=237288--It's not too late to get your Word of the Year! "I've come to believe food is the best way to remember our loved ones who have soared to heaven. One of the healing practices we have in our family is remembering our people through food. My kids remember their dad whenever my daughter bakes his favorite snickerdoodle cookies. I remember my Grandma Sara when we roll ravioli on Christmas Day for our feast. Maybe you serve up your aunt's cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning or that bacon-wrapped turkey in honor of your brother on Christmas Eve. Let me encourage you to take time not just to savor the food, but also to tell the stories of the people who live on through the memories of these special dishes. May these stories multiply faith through the generations."Leave a comment for Dorina: https://incourage.me/?p=236370--The winter issue of DaySpring's Everyday Faith Magazine is now available! "God can handle our anger, our frustration, our doubts, and our discouragement. He is with us in our grief even when we are wrestling spiritually. Friend, I know it might be tempting to just grit your teeth and power through, but expressing our anger and frustration to God can actually help us emerge on the other side with resilience and strength. It's like breathing through the most intense contractions and releasing the pressure instead of holding our breath through the pain."Leave a comment for Dorina and be entered to WIN her new book: https://incourage.me/?p=235758--Plan out your next year of Bible studies with the (in)courage Create in Me a Heart of... study collection! Even today, I imagine you experienced grief. Perhaps you're back at work, even though you loved staying at home Or you miss your daughter, who's off at college Or a friend has stood you up and blocked you out, and you feel unsettled by the loss. Or you are so sad about your pet who has passed away, Or maybe you're grieving your spouse or parent who is slowly slipping away because of a diagnosis. Today, I'm grieving that the rhythms and routines I once held dear are met with sighs or a jam-packed schedule. (For any parent of a marching band or club sport kid, you know what I'm talking about!) Whatever you grieve today, God meets you there. As the God of all comfort, He longs to comfort you. But many of us feel squeamish about grief. We don't want to talk about our loss. Or what hurts. We prefer to get busy, push down, numb out, or power through. Are we even allowed to be sad when God promised He'd work all things out for good? As Americans and as Christian women, many of us have an aversion to grief. Most of us don't want to have anything to do with it. And also, this side of heaven, grief is a part of daily life. I can think of no one better to speak about entering into grief despite our fear than today's guest, Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young. In today's episode, you'll receive practical strategies and anchoring truths for navigating grief. You'll learn: What we fear about grief, Why we avoid it, Where God meets us in our sadness and sorrow, And four ways to be a grace-giving friend to someone who is grieving. THIS MONTH'S PRAYER GUIDE: Praying God's Word for Your Blended Family. Not all blended families are a result of divorce. Sometimes, we find ourselves faced with a different future than we'd planned because of the death of a spouse. Because this kind of loss is completely different from any other topic we've covered so far, I thought it deserved an entire episode all to itself. And when I thought about who would be best to lead us in the conversation…someone who would bring such grace to it, being honest, while pointing the finger straight to Jesus, I couldn't think of anyone better than my friend, Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young. On today's episode, Dorina shares the experience of losing her young husband to cancer, and God's redemption and restoration plan for her and their three girls. It's a beautiful story. I teared up several times as Dorina share about God's faithfulness to her family during one of the most stressful times of her life. You won't want to miss this precious episode, so tune in right now! Dorina is also the author of our newest prayer guide, Praying God's Word for Your Blended Family. "It was also not lost on me that heat propelled the balloons upward. Just like the hot air balloons, it is so often the fire in life that becomes the catalyst for movement and causes us to look up. In the Bible, Peter encourages believers to have endurance through suffering and trials. He reminds us not to be surprised by the heat and pressure. In life, it's not a question if we will encounter trials; it's about when we encounter them. Life's challenges can cause us to sink or to soar."Leave a comment for Dorina: https://incourage.me/?p=235531--The brand-new NLT DaySpring Inspire Illustrating Bible features more than 300 ready-to-color designs, inviting you to interact with the Word of God in a unique and refreshing way.
