Welcome to episode two of model making, a new series from the Leaders Sport Business Podcast that analyses the flux across the global sports industry and asks whether we need a new commercial vision for sport. Are the business models that have sustained professional sport for so long at breaking point? And what are the solutions that sport's most innovative thinkers are endorsing?Big questions answered on-stage at Leaders Week London 2024 by Chicago Cubs and Marquee 360's Senior Vice President, Cale Vennum, and Viagogo's International Lead, Matt Drew. James Emmett, Leaders Editorial Director was in the moderator's chair to find out how ticketing can help unlock additional revenue streams and engagement.
After a long Saturday for millions of Oasis fans in online queues, the culture secretary says surge pricing will be part of the government's review of the ticket market. Niall speaks to secondary ticketing site Viagogo on this episode. While it wasn't part of dynamic pricing, it has offered resale tickets for thousands of pounds since Saturday. Matt Drew from the company accepts the industry needs a full review while Adam Webb, from the campaign group FanFair Alliance, explains the changes it would like to see. Later, our data and forensics correspondent Tom Cheshire tells Niall about how a rise in online propaganda has helped the Afghan branch of Islamic State become “the greatest external terror threat”. It's been linked to the concert hall attack in Moscow and the plot to disrupt Taylor Swift gigs in Austria. Producers: Soila Apparicio, Emma Rae Woodhouse Editor: Paul Stanworth
Everyone agrees the current sports ticketing market doesn't work. It rips off fans, is vulnerable to touts and is an inefficient way to manage supply and demand. But is regulation the answer?Labour will cap the resale prices of tickets and regulate resale platforms if the party wins the next general election, Sir Keir Starmer said recently. The plans will clamp down on ticket touts who rip off music and sports fans going to live events, Sir Keir said. The party says it will address ticket touting – buying up tickets to sell on at inflated profits – by capping resale prices and giving the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) powers to regulate resale platforms. A strong pre-election soundbite, after all who doesn't want cheaper tickets. This podcast discusses the second level implications of regulation and uses it as a way in to assess the problem with the ticket market, one of the key pillars of sports revenue generation and asset value. Our guests are Simon Bazalgette and Matt Drew.Simon was chief executive of The Jockey Club during a long career across sport and music industries, and now chairs investment and advisory business called Global Venue Services.Matt leads on overseas development for Viagogo/Stubhub, the secondary ticket marketplace, having held senior roles at Perform, DAZN, OPTA and WWE. Bourbon is as American as apple pie. Some might argue it is more American than apple pie, but most of the rest of the world makes their whiskey from malted barley. In the US there is a growing trend toward producers making American Single Malts. It is a fast growing and exciting category for whiskey enthusiasts. In this episode we talk with one of the category's leading experts Matt Drew. Matt is maltster and he runs the growing podcast Single Malt Matters. Matt and I represent our respective spirits (Bourbon and American Single Malts), and we explain the differences between the two and the likely progression of American Single Malts as the US laws change to keep up with the market. The only redeeming factor for having to watch this movie was we got to talk shit about it with Matt & Drew. Had they called it "The Skulls IV", this movie would've had a less cheese-grater-to-the-brain feel to it and been only slightly easier to digest. Still entirely too preachy, but at least it would've fit with the overall themes of it's predecessors. This feels like a trap! You go in expecting one thing, and you end up with something else entirely. Don't bother watching it, this episode will sum it up pretty nicely for you. Especially if your horror palette tends to align with ours. They decided to update Black Christmas with a more in-your-face message, and we are not here for it. For true horror fans, it should be a big disappoint. Little to no horror, a phone-in villain and the character development is practically non-existent. And don't even try to blame this on it being because it's a female-driven movie, we're not hearing it! There's no way we could get through these two remakes alone, so we invited Matt & Drew from The Post Credit Podcast to come join us, cuz, you know, misery loves company. Our first guest spot was on The Post Credit and we took on Thirteen Ghosts with them, go check that out if you're not too wasted in preparation for this episode. This week we're talking about the 2006 version of Black Christmas. If you could make it through the movie, you can make it through this episode. They could've at least given the girls the same names as the original, it would've been easier to keep track of them all. No joke, though, the director didn't even like the end product, so we don't feel too bad about our commentary. We wish we could tell you the worst part of this movie, but there are just too many to choose from. Matt was born in Durham, NC. Raised on a straight diet of Bigfoot jerky and milk from flying saucers, he was exposed to the world of the paranormal through TV shows like Are you Afraid of the Dark, Twilight Zone, Unsolved Mysteries, and X-Files. After completing other life goals such as moving to Greensboro, NC, getting a masters in clinical social work, owning a house, getting married, having a curious and precious child, and growing a phenomenally groomed beard he discovered podcasting. Finding a network of like minded curious mystery seekers and deciding to apply his creativity and research skills to help these podcasts curate curious content. Mr McKay and Ms Rae decided to draft their star player and bring him about this team of paranormal podcasters called Straight Up Strange Productions. His goal now to share what interesting information with the masses to help open the eyes of others to the strange and weird world around them.
