Welcome to SEASON TWO of rabbitHOLE!!! Please resolve to listen and share every episode (please, please, pretty please)! Today's Holes: Stuff Astronauts Like Accentuating the Positive Faking Your Religion BIT Founder/Director/Leader BILLY MERRITT takes the helm by painting a vivid and endlessly hilarious picture of Florida's "SPACE COAST." Please help us answer the age-old question, "How many TIKI BARS are too many?" Jason shares "letters from Gramps" about stick-to-it-iveness. Brett reminisces about accidentally reciting a sexist passage from an H.R. Hubbard book his Mom gave him. Deema confesses to faking his way through religious rituals to keep peace in the family until he can't take it anymore. Once he declares his authentic belief (or disbelief in his case), his father accuses him of being a communist, and everything goes back to normal. Thea confesses to participating in a religious rite of passage only for the money gifts. DO NOT judge her!  APOLOGIES:  NASA, Tang, Scatting, the planets Mars, Venus, and Penis, the Astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Matt, the professions of bartender, doctor, and lawyer, Elon Musk, mermaids, all organized religions, women, tigers, Bing Crosby, the GRAMMYs, and the entire Hubbard family.

Alexa is joined by Michele Weir, a renowned figure in vocal jazz education and arranging. Michele is the founder of the online school Music Habit and the creator of the app ScatAbility. Additionally, she has written several books on jazz, so who better to talk you through the topic of how to sing and teach this genre? KEY TAKEAWAYS Jazz is a diverse genre with various styles and sub-genres. New Orleans jazz originated in the early 20th century and features collective improvisation. Bebop, which emerged in the 1940s, is known for its complex harmonies, fast tempos and intricate improvisations. Cool Jazz developed in the late 1940s and 1950s, and has a more relaxed and laid-back style, emphasising controlled emotions and intricate arrangements. Contemporary jazz, a diverse category that encompasses various modern jazz styles and fusions with other genres, represents the evolving nature of jazz music. In identifying jazz music, several key elements stand out. The rhythmic style, particularly the swing feel, is a defining characteristic. Singers need to develop their rhythmic sense and feel the groove to deliver jazz convincingly. Additionally, jazz singers must master the art of putting lyrics in rhythm to sound conversational, especially in swing. Another indication of jazz interpretation is when the performer adds improvisation to the melody, showcasing their creativity and spontaneity. In jazz, singers alter notes and melodies to match the lyrics' subtext, using vocal phrasing and melodic variations to convey storytelling and emotions. This improvisational approach allows for unique expressions and deeper connections with the song's meaning. In jazz, ghost notes and articulation add depth and complexity to the music. Ghost notes are subtle, muted tones that enhance the groove, while articulation techniques bring out emotion, expressiveness and individuality in performances. Learning jazz piano benefits jazz singers by deepening their musicianship, improving improvisation, and enhancing timing and phrasing. This knowledge enables more expressive performances and better collaboration with accompanists. Overall, it makes jazz singers more versatile and engaging performers. Scatting is a more organic vocal improvisation technique using nonsensical syllables. A teacher helps by introducing scat patterns, practising rhythm and pitch and helping the singer make up their own rhythms. BEST MOMENTS ‘No two jazz singers are alike' ‘Jazz comes in different packages, it's not always about a well trained voice' ‘Phrasing is a bigger deal in jazz than it is in other styles' ‘I want to be leader of the band so I need to talk to them in the musical language they understand'   EPISODE RESOURCES Website: Michele Weir: https://www.micheleweir.com Music Habit: https://www.musichabit.com Relevant Links & Mentions: Artists mentioned: Joni Mitchell; Louis Armstrong; Benny Goodman; Count Basie; Charlie Parker; Dizzy Gillespie; Miles Davis; Ella Fitzgerald; Nat King Cole; Sarah Vaughan; Carmen McRae; Nancy Wilson; Mel Tormé; Gretchen Parlato; Bob Dylan ScatAbility App: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/scatability/id966549564 The work of Judy Niemack: http://www.judyniemack.com/ The work of Bob Stoloff: https://www.bobstoloffmusic.com/ Darmon Meader: https://darmonmeader.com/ New York Voices: https://newyorkvoices.com/ Jazz Voice: https://www.jazzvoice.com/   ABOUT THE GUEST Michele Weir is widely distinguished for her work in vocal jazz education and arranging. The Personal History, Adventures, Experiences & Observations of Peter Leroy

HERB AND LORNA moved in the next day, but, while they were unpacking, Herb began to feel that he'd been unfair, that he'd forced Lorna to share, or at least to try to share, his enthusiasm for the apartment. He began to feel that he should have left the apartment hunting to her, that she should have been the one to choose the place where she would live, and that, if she had been the one to choose, she would never have chosen a place like this, would certainly never have chosen any place where she had to walk through her landlords' home and home life to get to her own.     “I know it isn't as private as you'd like,” said Herb.     “It doesn't matter,” said Lorna. “I love it here.”     “It's going to be awkward walking through their place every time we come and go,” said Herb.     “I don't mind,” said Lorna.     “It isn't too late to change our minds,” said Herb. He came to her and took her face in his hands. “I'll tell them that we really have to have a larger place, and that I talked you into taking this place, and it wasn't fair to you — ”     “Dut, dut, dut,” said Lorna. She wrapped herself around Herb and kissed him quiet. “Ignite me, please,” she whispered.     When they got back to unpacking, Herb watched with amusement and surprise while Lorna unpacked with great care a lurid papier-mâché duck and tried placing it in several locations around the room before settling on a window sill in the kitchen as just the right spot for it.     “Lorna,” said Herb, “where did you get — ”     “Don't say anything nasty about it,” said Lorna. “I know it's not beautiful, but it's important to me.” She held the duck in front of her with both hands, elevated it, rotated it, examined it. “I've had it since I was a little girl.” She paused. “A very little girl,” she added distractedly, struck by an appreciation of all the time, so much time, that had passed since she'd thought that the duck was beautiful and that it stood for Uncle Luther's love. How much more it meant now. And yet, how much uglier and smaller it seemed, now, here, removed from childhood and Chacallit, distant in time, space, and understanding. “This,” she said, meaning all that, “is a very old duck.”THEIR STAY in the one-room apartment at the Mikszaths' would, Herb and Lorna agreed, be temporary, and it would do just fine for a while, till they found something bigger, something better, while they were learning their way around Babbington, while Herb was establishing himself. It would be just fine until they found someplace that they really liked.     They stayed for five years. During those five years, Mr. Mikszath, who had been the victim of a stroke, never said anything but “Dut, dut, dut.” Herb and Lorna learned to interpret his pointing, his sketching in the air, his twisted facial expressions, and the various emphases he put on his “duts,” and they made his vocabulary of “duts,” grimaces, and gestures a part of theirs. Mrs. Mikszath's affection for them grew and grew, but she also developed a romantic interest in Herb. She began wearing makeup, elaborate costume jewelry, and gauzy, nearly transparent, blouses. Her remarks took on the style of double-entendres, even when they were not so intended, so warmly burned the fire in her heart. Once a week, at least, she would come to their door in the evening, soon after Herb had returned home, with a tray on which she'd laid out dinner for two, insisting, always, that she'd made too much for Miklos and herself, or that this was a dish she'd eaten as girl — full of memories, they had to try it — or that Miklos couldn't eat because his stomach was “stormy.” Whatever she brought was provided in his-and-hers sizes: a large plate for Herb, almost a platter, and coffee in a mug; a small plate for Lorna, and coffee in a tiny cup, an heirloom, a precious cup of the thinnest, finest china, offered as an apology for the way she felt about Herb, an acknowledgment of Lorna's femininity, and a reminder of her own.In Topical Guide 303, Mark Dorset considers Language: Idiolect; Language: Structure (Morphemes, Phonemes, Syllables, Monosyllables); Language: Words Meaningful and Meaningless; Word Play; Semantic Satiation; and Scatting from this episode.Have you missed an episode or two or several? You can begin reading at the beginning or you can catch up by visiting the archive or consulting the index to the Topical Guide. You can listen to the episodes on the Personal History podcast. Phil and Jake rank bicycles, scatting (aka scat singing), and feeding cats like babies on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We briefly discuss ventriloquism, including mention of Candice Bergen's father Edgar Bergen, who was an actor, comedian and Vaudeville and radio ventriloquist. He was a big star, bigger than it's possible to imagine someone being when his main thing is throwing his voice through a dummy that sits on his lap ON THE RADIO. Even on TV or movies it doesn't really make sense because all the sound comes from the same speaker so throwing his voice doesn't seem that impressive and editing can be done anyways. It just seems like the kind of thing that only would work in live performances but here we are! His show was on the radio for 20 years! Phil rode a bicycle across the USA from Yorktown, VA to Vallejo CA. He's a very private person and doesn't like to talk about it much unless you mention bikes, the USA, Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California or any of the geographical features therein. Jake rode a bike around the island of Losinj, Croatia. Jake refers to wearing a “turtle shell brace” after his bike accident, but it's maybe more commonly called a clamshell brace. Madison Square Garden is the World's Most Famous Arena. It sits on top of Penn Station between 7th and 8th Ave in Manhattan. It's sort of ugly and it replaced the old Penn Station which was an architectural marvel. We mention it because Phil notes that the original MSG was the site of many indoor bicycle races (and was actually on Madison Avenue which made a lot more sense).  Notable scatters discussed include Steven Tyler (of Aerosmith), David Lee Roth, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are Cleveland rappers who were signed and promoted by the late Eazy-E before his death. They were really influential in their sing-songy delivery (which you could hear in Crucial Conflict, Three Six Mafia & Nelly)  and their post Geto Boys "horrorcore" angle (similar to Gravediggaz). Their biggest successes were probably Crossroads, a meditation on death and First of the Month, a celebration of plenty. They once filme a video of their trip to Switzerland which was made to get Phil Collins to agree to let them sample him for their song Home. Here's the Bone Thugs sketch on Saturday Night Live that Jake mentions. MC Skat Cat was an animated cat that would rap in the early 90s. Most famously with Paula Abdul. Phil just listened to "Skat Strut" for the first time and enjoyed the Earth, Wind & Fire sample. “Scatman (ski-ba-bob-ba-dop-bop)” by Scatman John is not to be confused with Scatman Crothers. The Fu-Schnickens were a hip-hop trio that were very difficult to understand but nonetheless quite impressive because they rapped at double (maybe triple?) speed. Chip-Fu in particular was just incredible even if the speed of the words made you dizzy. I follow him on twitter but he just tweets at regular speed, sadly. As a white kid from rural California with zero cultural context, Phil didn't understand that I was hearing a Caribbean thing. Their Ring the Alarm samples the Tenor Saw classic. They're mostly remembered now for making Can We Rock with Shaquille O'Neal. Phil might have taken it too far to say Doo Wop music was scatting. The second half of "Sh-Booom" is a good example of what he was referring to though. “Heebie Jeebies” by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five is, as of 2021, in the public domain. Phil's thinking we should make this our show's theme song. Both New Orleans and Queens can claim Louis Armstrong. He was from New Orleans but he moved to Corona, Queens (very close to where the Mets play) and lived there from 1943 until his death in 1971.  The Harder They Fall on Netflix features “Broader Than Broadway” by Barrington Levy, which is a fantastic song. We discuss “Panama” by Van Halen. Phil says that the lyrics to this song don't matter at all and they might as well be scatting. Here's that twitter thread of old paintings with people feeding cats like babies. How many shirtless men wearing elaborate angel wings, gold lamé shorts & furry cha-cha heels are really just actual angels?
