In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover talks with Michael J. McFall about building a successful, self-sustaining company. See the video here: https://youtu.be/bb4DwkfpQ0I. Michael J. McFall (https://www.linkedin.com/in/mike-biggby) is Co-Founder and Co-CEO at BIGGBY COFFEE, the US' third largest coffee franchise. Mike is the Everyman CEO--he doesn't have a yacht, a podcast or an MBA, and you won't hear him talking about being disruption, leveraging assets or changing paradigms. He is, however, the founder of Global Orange Development and the co-CEO of BIGGBY COFFEE®, a fast-growing $200-million-dollar coffee franchise with 300+ locations across the Midwest. At a time when there's a lot of confident-sounding start-up advice from academics or ultra-wealthy tycoons, Mike's remarkable life journey from minimum-wage barista to business leader has given him a very different outlook. His perspective on business—shaped by spending the last 23 years helping hundreds of people open and operate successful coffee shops—provides a much-needed road map for today's entrepreneurs so they can turn their ideas into a profitable reality. If Mike's business philosophy can be distilled down to its essence, it would be this: Be brave. Be humble. Be thoughtful. Be aware of others. And be yourself. Who doesn't love the coffee business? In the US, the growth of coffee chains is fascinating. Michael J. McFall began his career with BIGGBY® COFFEE at the original store in East Lansing in 1996 as a minimum-wage barista. He's now co-CEO, and over the last twenty-two years, he and business partner Bob Fish have created one of America's excellent specialty coffee chains. They have over 250 stores open in 9 states. He's also the author of Grind: A No-bullsh*t Approach to Take Your Business from Concept to Cash Flow—a book about common sense strategies for turning a start-up idea into a positive cash flow business. We talked about starting a new business and why the franchise model worked for them. Michael says that products don't usually sell themselves. You need to be willing to sell your product for as long as it takes. You've got to be obsessed with generating revenue. He's also involved in personal growth and development. As a leader, you need to meet your company where it needs you, not the opposite. We also talk about the importance of being able to compartmentalize when starting a business. We touch on impatience, enthusiasm, and the process of due diligence on yourself. We also learn incredible mission-critical things like the six-hour rule, where franchisees spend six hours a day on the front end for the first year. Another fundamental premise in Grind is that looking through your business from a cost-cutting lens isn't advantageous to your growth and customer happiness. If you obsess over taking care of the customer, everything else takes care of itself. Making people happy and believing in what you do creates an opportunity to ask your customers to promote you. We also talk about avoiding complexity and not making things more complex than they need to be. This episode is full of smart ideas, processes, and attitudes to grow a business beyond your expectations. Receiving his degree from Michigan State University’s School of Hospitality Business, Bob Fish has been Chairman of the Board of the Michigan Restaurant Association, Chair of the Small Business Association of Michigan, and was a Founding Board member of MiQuest, a Michigan entrepreneurial incubator. With all of this under his belt, on March 15, 1995, Bob Fish and Michael McFall founded BIGGBY® COFFEE with a single store in East Lansing, Michigan. One year later, and on the cusp of opening a second location, the two entrepreneurs, on a handshake and $4,000, decided to franchise the concept. BIGGBY® COFFEE’s cultural values of Make Friends, Have Fun, Be Yourself, and Share Great Coffee help coffee-lovers and the coffee-curious alike benefit from a less pretentious and fun approach to the standard gourmet cafe paradigm. Today, there are 239 locations in nine states. Bob enjoys walking, mainly around Saugatuck, MI.Incidentals, Takeaways, & Mentioned Books:Innovate State is a long-running speaker series. So what does it take to survive? This week’s guest is Michael McFall, and he’s shares his take on focus, process, and consistency and how these three actions have positioned Biggby Coffee to become a billion dollar company within 7 years. Along the way, he talks about “CEO disease” and its cure; the smartest people in your company; the single characteristic that marks a really bad manager; and why true entrepreneurs never need encouragement.
