Welcome to Trail TMZ, the spicy trail running news breakdown you didn't know you needed. I'm Jeff Garmire, and this week I dive into the carnage at Western States—Jim Walmsley and Hayden Hawks are out, and so is the “Unbreakable 2” film project (yes, really). I give my unfiltered take on why that matters, how storytelling in our sport is being fumbled, and why it's time for trail films to embrace the chaos instead of bailing when stars drop. Then, things heat up with Camille Herron's cryptic Instagram post—where she dubs herself a sports whistleblower. What's the truth? What's hearsay? I break it down and talk about the real harm of social media call-outs in a sport that needs clarity more than confusion.Next up, we've got controversy at Black Canyon 100K involving Aravaipa Running, unauthorized aid, course-cutting, and a 20-minute penalty that turned into a full DQ. Is it a conflict of interest if a team athlete breaks the rules? I was there filming and have thoughts. And finally, we talk about how college athletics might implode thanks to SEC Football drama—and what that means for the future of running programs and the next generation of trail and ultra athletes. This episode has drama, nuance, hot takes, and just enough sarcasm to get me in trouble again.Chapters00:00 Western States Controversies and Unbreakable 204:16 Camille Herron: The Sports Whistleblower10:01 Aravaipa Running: Cheating Allegations and Controversy15:24 The Future of College Sports and Its Impact on RunningSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside
Today's episode starts off with something I might just turn into a regular segment: Trail TMZ. We dig into the controversy surrounding William Goodge's run across Australia and the data that has people wondering—from heart rate anomalies to 55 mph GPS spikes. Then we take a brief detour into the Camille Herron Wikipedia saga and my lingering sadness that she never came on the show. But the real highlight is a deep conversation with Aaron Fleisher, a fellow five-time Cocodona 250 finisher. We talk about his journey from stage racing and thru-hiking into the world of 200s, and how he found success (and beer) on trail. We get into hallucination stories, racing strategies, sleep theories, and the evolution of Cocodona over the past five years. Plus, Aaron breaks down his experience at Tour de Géants and what it's like to compete in a race that makes U.S. ultras look like casual jogs.We wrap up with some trail name lore (“Food Boobs,” and "Loophole") and ponder how Cocodona became the most community-embraced ultra in the U.S. Oh, and yes—there might be a bumper sticker involved that says "Cocodona sucks, tell your friends."Follow Aaron online: https://www.instagram.com/mittenmadness/Follow and shop at out sponsors: Janji.com, Garagegrowngear.com, and Csinstant.coffeeChapters00:00 – Trail TMZ: Goodge, Cockrell & the Controversy03:30 – Camille Herron, Wikipedia & Podcast Rejections06:00 – Introducing Aaron Fleisher & Cocodona Beginnings10:00 – Beer, Sandals & Surviving the Inaugural Year14:00 – Sleep, Strategy & Hallucinations at 200 Milers19:00 – Through-Hiking Mentality in Ultras23:00 – Tour des Géants: Europe's Wildest Ultra28:00 – Cultural Clash & Why Tour Felt Life-Changing32:00 – Cocodona's Future & Becoming a Community Race36:00 – Trail Names, Reflections & Last Person StandingSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutsideKeywordsCocodona 250, ultrarunning, trail running, 200 mile race, Jeff Garmire, Aaron Fleisher, Free Outside Podcast, thru hiking, Tour des Geants, Tour de Glaciers, ultramarathon, trail TMZ, William Gooch, running across Australia, watchmuling, heart rate zone, hallucinations ultrarunning, beer mile, food boobs, trail names, Aravaipa Running, Cocodona recap, trail race strategy, sleep in ultras, ultra running controversy, elite trail running, long distance running, through hiker mindset, adventure racing, Grand to Grand, 200 milers, ultra endurance, running gossip

Wow, there were a lot of emotions and opinions coming out of last week's episode, and we appreciated them all, mostly. Some of the internet haters get a little too excited, but we know that comes with the territory. Well, today... we get to take a deep breath and enjoy this new episode. No controversies to be seen in this one *wink wink*. Des and Kara start with extended life update. Des updates us on her prep for NYC, and Kara shares her painful experience get PRP in her hip. They talk baseball (go Tigers and Padres!), upcoming travels, Netflix's The Perfect Couple, and Kara's upcoming induction into the Croatian American Sports Hall of Fame. Then, they turn to the Camille Herron and Wikipedia controversy that somewhat-surprisingly involved Des's 50K record. You hear Des's side of the story and takes from both Des and Kara on the sadness of it all. They also answer the question "should Lululemon have dropped her sponsorship?" Plus, Kara shares some crazy stories that might inspire someone to be a little nicer on the internet. Finally, the episode ends with some notes on the Chicago Marathon fields and reactions to Athlos, the new track meet just for women, before a brain-fog-ending top 5 brought to you by Ketone-IQ. Late release this week but better late then never! We start off talking about Mike Wardian completing his Appalachian Trail through run in 60 days. He had to battle the aftermath of hurricane Helene in order to get it done. We discuss the devastation of the hurricane and also the Yeti folks who pitched in and helped the people of Damascus after the Yeti 100 was cancelled. Then we look into the 153 mile Spartathlon road race in Greece. Camille Herron was back to defend her course record from last year but she had a lot going on with the wiki controversy. She DNF'd and we haven't heard much about why but I can imagine she was mentally distracted. We go over race results from The Bear 100, Dick Collins Firetrails, Flagstaff Sky Peaks, Mt. Taylor 50K, West Line Winder 50K, and Heritage 50K. Meredith Hughes set a new women's self-supported FKT on the Colorado trail west to east collegiate west. Courtney Dauwalter is racing in France this weekend and will be going for the outright win at Nice Cote d'Azure 115K which is no longer a Western States golden ticket race. Send us a text#298 - If you ran in high school or college and didn't run on a track, you probably ran cross country. But what happened when you left school? Did you continue running cross country? In the US, probably not. If you grew up in Africa, chances are the answer would be yes. Cross country is a huge sport in other countries, but why isn't it a bigger sport here? It's exciting, has all the ups and downs of trail running, yet is still short enough for spectators. Today, I talk about its beginnings and why it should be brought back to the Olympics, this time, to the Winter Olympics! But wait, there's MORE! Do not miss my thoughts on the Camille Herron controversy. You may or may not agree with me, but I share some thoughts that needed to be said. You can always let me know what you think! Not as big as the fight between Evil Becky and Hundo discussing Vermont 100, but this episode gets AFB fired up enough that he hardly lets anyone else speak as he defends Camille and attempts to slay the would be cancel dragons of social media. Honestly hard to watch this happen within our ranks and makes us wonder if the doling of punishment is more harmful to the community than the original allegedly unpardonable sin. We turned our attention to three big stories this week: Tara Dower's new FKT on the Appalachian Trail, the controversy over Camille Herron's Wikipedia edits, and the two press releases from the Boston Athletic Association regarding entry into the Boston Marathon. We had a lot to say about each of them, including hearing Michelle's first-hand account from the finish line of Tara's run!

Huge episode tonight! A lot to talk about. Farley gives a run down of his experience running Mountain Lakes 100 over the weekend. We both are in awe of Tara Dower's accomplishment setting the overall FKT on the Appalachian Trail, it's truly impressive. We go over race results from Mountain Lakes 100. Then we talk about one of the icons of ultrarunning, Anton Krupicka, who came out of nowhere and took second at Grindstone 100. We go over the results of the other races at Grindstone. Also talk about the young gun Hans Troyer who ran Grindstone 100K and it was his first race since taking 10th at Black Canyon 100K, where he ended up in the hospital afterwards with rabdo. Unfortunately Grindstone didn't go his way and he ended up with a DNF. We then talk about a possible shady maneuver the first place runner did to block the second place runner during a sprint to the finish at Mammoth Trail Fest 26K which was a Golden Trail World Series Event with major prize money on the line. We also go over the results from Mammoth Trail Fest races, the Barkley Fall Classic, the Cowboy 200, Pikes Peak Ascent and Pikes Peak (not quite) Marathon. Max King and Hayden Hawks both had some success at events overseas. We go over results from Dances with Dirt (Hell, MI), Flagstaff to Grand 100, IMTUF 100, and there is a new self-supported FKT on the Colorado Trail. Finally we end the show with the breaking news / controversy about Camille Herron and her husband + coach Conor Holt who got busted editing the wiki pages of other elite ultrarunnners to make them look less significant and editing her own page to seem more elite. We also spend the rest of the episode diving into our favorite 100 miler, The Bear, and the stacked field of runners they have running it this weekend.

Women's ultrarunning is on fire right now with powerhouses like recent Barkley Marathons finisher Jasmin Paris, 40, and Lululemon FURTHER 6-day record smasher Camille Herron, 42, showing the world what midlife women can do. This week, we sat down with ultrarunning legend Pam Reed, who broke ground for women in the sport decades ago, winning races like Badwater 135 outright in 2002 and 2003, and talking about menopause at a time when athletes rarely uttered the word. Now 63, Pam is still blazing trails, most recently finishing the Hardrock 100, Badwater 135, and Western States Endurance Run–that's 337.5 miles total–in a span of 22 days. We talk all about how she gets it done, the hurdles she's faced, and what the future holds.Pam Reed has been a prolific ultrarunner since she entered the sport in 1992. She quickly excelled and won on the track, road, and trails. She is most well-known for her back-to-back Badwater 135 overall wins in 2002 and 2003. Over her career, she has at least 30 ultra wins, including 13 wins in races of 100 miles or more. In 2021, she became the 19th known person in the world to achieve 100 100-mile finishes with at least 45 podiums in those 100-milers. She has finished 65 full Ironmans, including 10 at Kona, Hawaii. In 2005, Pam authored the book, The Extra Mile: One Woman's Personal Journey to Ultra-Running Greatness.
