Laura Rollins has had the Western States 100 as a bucket list race since 2017 when she first entered the lottery. Finally her chance came this year, and I was so stoked to follow her on the live stream and tracking whenever I got the chance. When I saw her cross the finish line, I was so incredibly proud of her, and I immediately wanted to know every detail of her experience. That sit-down happened about a week later, and now I get to pass it on to you! What a powerful woman Laura is, and what an epic race of ups and downs she waded through. I loved our time together. Special guest joins to debrief the legendary Western States Endurance Run one week after the 100.2 mile traverse of California's Sierras. After several years in person at the event, we draw on our experiences and observations to comment on some notable elements. As the "Kona" of ultra running, it only seemed appropriate to juxtapose Western States with the Ironman World Champs.
Join hosts Coach Loretta and Coach Lindsay from Ornery Mule Coaching as they welcome athlete Russell Stratton to the Dirt Podcast. In this candid conversation, Russell shares his experience at the Western States Endurance Run, where he faced the tough reality of a DNF (Did Not Finish) after missing the cutoff at the Last Chance aid station. Together, they explore the challenges of race day, the mental and emotional toll of not finishing, how even elite athletes struggle with their own hurdles and the lessons learned from setbacks in endurance sports. Russell opens up about his training journey, the significance of his crew and the importance of mental resilience. Tune in for an insightful discussion about perseverance, vulnerability, and the support of the running community as they navigate the highs and lows of the sport. Whether you're a seasoned runner or just starting out, this episode is packed with valuable insights and inspiration.

Some composers picture colors or abstract shapes when they're working on a new piece. Derrick Skye thinks about space. His fascination with the cosmos is threaded throughout his compositions, including the latest in his series "Prisms, Cycles, Leaps." For our series on California composers. reporter Clare Wiley sat down with the Los Angeles-based Skye to hear how he brings his otherworldly ideas to life and how living in multicultural LA has influenced him. Plus, we go to the oldest 100-mile ultramarathon in the world: The Western States Endurance Run. This grueling race starts near Lake Tahoe and winds along old mining trails in the Sierra, drops into the canyons of the American River, and finishes outside Sacramento. Thousands of people are on the waitlist to attempt it, but just a fraction make it to the starting line. The runners who do compete are overwhelmingly white, even though the race is trying to include more BIPOC athletes. KQED's Mark Nieto got to watch this year's race at the end of June and he followed one competitor who's inspiring other runners of color. Learn more about your ad choices.
