Ten years ago, Gary popped his 100‑mile cherry on the Cleveland Way. Countless miles have been covered between then and now, but after a bit of refocusing found himself back on a start line, this time for the Hardmoors 200.Starting in Hull, the route winds through wooded slopes, over rolling hills, and down into deep valleys, before eventually climbing onto the northern escarpment and dropping toward the final stretch of the Wolds Way. At Filey you join the stunning 110‑mile Cleveland Way National Trail.Over the course of the weekend, Gary's race evolved from simply getting the job done to suddenly finding himself in pole position… and then hanging on for dear life as the pack closed in.HARRIER - Use code TATP10 for 10% off - https://harrierrunfree.avln.me/c/qXhnTgIdEMeaXMILES UK - Listeners receive 10% of their order value back as store credit via the link - https://xmiles.avln.me/c/RiwxnARvfHeRFENIX LIGHT LTD - Use code T&T5 for 5% - https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/PRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION - Use code TEA2026 for 15% off your first orderPRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION PLANNER - https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zSTRAVA - Use code TEA for 20% off an annual membership - #StravaPartner #Adhttps://www.strava.com/subscribe/checkout?code=TEASUNGOD - Use code TEA15 for 15% off your order - https://www.sungod.co/en-gbASCEND APP - Use code TeaandTrails30 to receive 30% off a monthly subscription.https://ascendtrailapp.avln.me/c/MOwNWISPDOwiContent may contain affiliate links which help support and grow this channel at no extra cost to you.Brew with the Coaches - CLICK HEREHardmoors - https://www.hardmoors110.org.uk/Trail Outlaws - https://www.trailoutlaws.com/13 Valleys Ultra - https://www.13valleysultra.com/Beyond Trails - https://www.beyondtrails.co.uk/Hellfire Events - https://www.hellfireevents.com/Dales Runner - https://dalesrunner.co.uk/Hannah Walsh - https://www.hannahwalsh.co.uk/Punk Panther - https://www.punkpanther.co.uk/Pen Llyn Ultra - https://penllyn.niftyentries.com/Raw Adventures - https://www.raw-adventures.co.uk/XNRG - https://www.xnrg.co.uk/
Maria Chevalier has run a marathon in 48 states, finished the Boston Marathon 17 times, and a few weeks ago ran it twice in the same day, starting at 3 a.m. in reverse from Boston to Hopkinton, resting for a few hours, and then lining up with everyone else for the actual race. 52.4 miles total. But the distance is almost beside the point. What makes this conversation worth listening to is how Maria thinks about hard things and why she keeps choosing them. She's navigated four wrist reconstructions that ended her music career before it fully started. Nine DNFs at Vermont 100 before finally finishing on the tenth try. A medical history that took away choices she thought were hers to make. Episode 108 brings all four hosts back together for a rare catch-up episode, and the conversation covers everything from ambitious running goals to the realities of trying to fit training into already full lives. Hilary shares the experience of premiering Raise the Bar, her feature-length film celebrating the women of Western States and the athletes who continue to push the sport forward. Rachel reflects on her standout FKT effort on West Grandeur and the challenge of balancing big athletic goals with motherhood, medical training, and everyday life. Leah talks about building toward UTMB, finding motivation in a busy season of life, and the growing sense of community she's found in Salt Lake City. Katie opens up about navigating family health challenges, illness, interrupted training, and the mental battle of holding onto goals when life keeps throwing curveballs. It's a conversation about ambition, friendship, perspective, and why showing up imperfectly is often the most important part of the process. Whether you're training for your biggest race of the year or simply trying to squeeze a run into a busy week, this episode is a reminder that progress rarely looks perfect, and that's okay. There's one weekend in your IRONMAN or 70.3 build that matters more than any other. Most athletes either skip it, don't complete sessions in the right order, or turn it into the wrong kind of training weekend entirely. In this episode, Coach Rob explains why the race simulation weekend is the single biggest factor that determines whether you get to race day confident or worried. It's the weekend that takes the fear out of the unknown, exposes the mistakes you'd otherwise only discover on race day, and gives you the data you need to fix them while there's still time.Rob walks through exactly how to structure the weekend's training, pacing targets, why this is a rehearsal and not a fitness test, and why athletes who skip it are often the ones most likely to have issues on race day. If you're doing your first IRONMAN or 70.3 this year, it's so, so importnat that you have the correct race simulation weekends scheduled at the optimal time. This episode will walk you through exactly how to build it into your final training block.* * * * * * *SPONSORS* * * * * * * *Thinking about your first Ironman or 70.3 in 2026? We're incredibly lucky this week to share the mics with a true legend of our sport. Kim Collison has taken on, and completed, some of the UK's roughest, toughest challenges. And it's not all about going long either. He's just as happy toeing the line at a local fell race.Kim joins us to talk about his recent Lakes, Meres & Waters record‑breaking run, but the conversation wanders beautifully through all sorts of topics, nutrition, training, how he picks his challenges and even his journey with cholesterol medication. Kim's not someone who seeks the limelight, so it felt like a real treat, for us and for you listening, that he said yes to our persistent DMs.HARRIER - Use code TATP10 for 10% off - https://harrierrunfree.avln.me/c/qXhnTgIdEMeaXMILES UK - Listeners receive 10% of their order value back as store credit via the link - https://xmiles.avln.me/c/RiwxnARvfHeRFENIX LIGHT LTD - Use code T&T5 for 5% - https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/PRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION - Use code TEA2026 for 15% off your first orderPRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION PLANNER - https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zSTRAVA - Use code TEA for 20% off an annual membership - #StravaPartner #Adhttps://www.strava.com/subscribe/checkout?code=TEAASCEND APP - Use code TeaandTrails30 to receive 30% off a monthly subscription.https://ascendtrailapp.avln.me/c/MOwNWISPDOwiContent may contain affiliate links which help support and grow this channel at no extra cost to you.Brew with the Coaches - CLICK HEREHardmoors - https://www.hardmoors110.org.uk/Trail Outlaws - https://www.trailoutlaws.com/13 Valleys Ultra - https://www.13valleysultra.com/Beyond Trails - https://www.beyondtrails.co.uk/Hellfire Events - https://www.hellfireevents.com/Dales Runner - https://dalesrunner.co.uk/Hannah Walsh - https://www.hannahwalsh.co.uk/Punk Panther - https://www.punkpanther.co.uk/Pen Llyn Ultra - https://penllyn.niftyentries.com/Raw Adventures - https://www.raw-adventures.co.uk/XNRG - https://www.xnrg.co.uk/
After a few chaotic weeks away from the mic, Katie is back and catching up with Leah on everything that's unfolded lately, from her son's type 1 diabetes diagnosis to the emotional whiplash of balancing family crisis with training, racing, and everyday life. It's an honest conversation about what happens when running suddenly takes a backseat, and how both of them are navigating UTMB build-up while life keeps throwing curveballs. They also get into local race wins, steep Salt Lake climbs, late-night mountain runs, Western States pacing plans, Broken Arrow prep, and the momentum women's trail running is carrying right now after huge performances from Rachel Entrekin, Tove Alexandersson, and more. Through all of it, this episode comes back to the same idea: running can be part of your life without being your entire identity. This episode is edited and produced by the Sandyboy Productions Podcast Network.A big shout out to our new sponsor Precision Fuel & Hydration. It's finally here. The training is done, the excuses are gone, and Gary, along with a whole crew of wonderfully stubborn athletes, is about to set off on an adventure that will push every limit they've got. There'll be moments of doubt, a few questionable life choices, and probably more than one internal conversation about retiring from running altogether. But there will also be magic. A full weekend of grit, laughter, memories, and people proving, yet again, that what seems impossible is absolutely within reach.Click to TrackHARRIER - Use code TATP10 for 10% off - https://harrierrunfree.avln.me/c/qXhnTgIdEMeaXMILES UK - Listeners receive 10% of their order value back as store credit via the link - https://xmiles.avln.me/c/RiwxnARvfHeRFENIX LIGHT LTD - Use code T&T5 for 5% - https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/PRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION - Use code TEA2026 for 15% off your first orderPRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION PLANNER - https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zSTRAVA - Use code TEA for 20% off an annual membership - #StravaPartner #Adhttps://www.strava.com/subscribe/checkout?code=TEAASCEND APP - Use code TeaandTrails30 to receive 30% off a monthly subscription.https://ascendtrailapp.avln.me/c/MOwNWISPDOwiContent may contain affiliate links which help support and grow this channel at no extra cost to you.Brew with the Coaches - CLICK HEREHardmoors - https://www.hardmoors110.org.uk/Trail Outlaws - https://www.trailoutlaws.com/13 Valleys Ultra - https://www.13valleysultra.com/Beyond Trails - https://www.beyondtrails.co.uk/Hellfire Events - https://www.hellfireevents.com/Dales Runner - https://dalesrunner.co.uk/Hannah Walsh - https://www.hannahwalsh.co.uk/Punk Panther - https://www.punkpanther.co.uk/Pen Llyn Ultra - https://penllyn.niftyentries.com/Raw Adventures - https://www.raw-adventures.co.uk/XNRG - https://www.xnrg.co.uk/
Coach Rob answers the most common questions athletes ask as they move from the pool into open water at the start of the triathlon race season. This week: Why pool speed often doesn't automatically translate to open water...How much time poor sighting can actually cost you over an IRONMAN swim... The crocodile eyes sighting technique, what to sight off, and how to practice it in the pool... The speed benefits of drafting - how to position yourself on someone's feet without annoying them, and the drill to practice with a swim buddy. How to flush your wetsuit properly before the swim start so it fits the way it's designed to... How many open water sessions you really need before race day...Why race day adrenaline makes everyone go off too hard, and how to train pacing awareness in the pool... Using bilateral breathing as both a pacing governor and a tactical tool on race day... This week on the Tea & Trails podcast, Gary squeezed in a Bob Graham support and a race. Not exactly the textbook taper, but he had such a cracking weekend and wouldn't change a thing. And unbelievably, after all those months of graft, the Hardmoors 200 is now just one week away.Meanwhile, Eddie is on the injury bench with a herniated disc flare‑up. Grim timing as she gears up for the Spine, and we're all crossing fingers and toes it doesn't keep her off the trails for long. The coaches dig into a great listener question about bonking late in The Lap Ultra, what went wrong, what to learn, and how to avoid that death‑march shuffle next time. And finally, Eddie and Gary chew the fat about an absolutely wild Cocodona 250, including a sensational run from Precision Fuel & Hydration athlete Rachel Entrekin. The most recent episode of the Better With Running podcast features Chris Armstrong and Zacca Newman discussing their latest training updates and a special interview with Canadian athlete Tony Conforti. Zacca is preparing for his return to racing at Albert Park this weekend, Meanwhile, Chris is in a recovery phase, logging a recovery week of 32km for the week with a focus on strength work and after his recent efforts at the Ballarat Marathon. This weeks guest isTony Conforti, he shares his remarkable journey of improvement since joining Run2PB with Coach Brady Threlfall at the helm. Starting with a marathon personal best of 3:50, Tony has since shaved nearly 50 minutes off that time, most recently clocking a 3:01:02 at the Georgina Spring Fling Marathon. He discussed the challenges of training through one of the harshest Canadian winters in decades, often running in temperatures between -15°C and -25°C. Tony attributes much of his success to being a "student of the sport," maintaining high discipline, and working closely with his coach. During the interview, Tony detailed his race execution and fueling strategy, noting that he consumed approximately 90 grams of carbohydrates per hour using Precision Fuel & Hydration gels. He reflected on the valuable lessons learned from a previous race in Toronto, where aggressive pacing in hot and humid conditions led to a difficult finish. This experience helped him remain in control during his latest marathon, where he felt he was "actually racing" rather than just surviving the final kilometers. The conversation also touched on Tony's background in rugby and Muay Thai, and how his interest in running grew from a fitness requirement into a passion for progression. As a father with a second child on the way, he balances his training and has a prue joy for it. Looking ahead to the remainder of 2026, Tony aims to continue his trend of spring and fall marathons while potentially incorporating shorter distances to work on his speed.

This week, we're joined by inov‑8 ambassador James Gibson, it's his very first time on the show. So we take the chance to hear how he found his way into running, and how the high fells became his happy place. In recent years he's completed some of the UK's toughest mountain challenges, including a winter Double Bob Graham Round, if that wasn't enough, he's also set a record on the Double Paddy Buckley Round. We chat through both of these enormous winter efforts, what drew him to them, how he prepared, and what it actually feels like to push through two full rounds back‑to‑back when most people would be calling it a day after one.Despite these world‑class performances, James remains famously low‑key. He's a running coach, a Mountain Leader, and someone who has spent years guiding people up Scafell Pike and across the Lakeland fells. That background, long days on the hills, carrying weight, moving steadily through rough ground has shaped him into the resilient, quietly determined athlete he is today.https://www.jamesgibsoncoaching.co.uk/Pic Credit - Jamie Rutherford @jmruther4dHARRIER - Use code TATP10 for 10% off - https://harrierrunfree.avln.me/c/qXhnTgIdEMeaXMILES UK - Listeners receive 10% of their order value back as store credit via the link - https://xmiles.avln.me/c/RiwxnARvfHeRFENIX LIGHT LTD - Use code T&T5 for 5% - https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/PRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION - Use code TEA2026 for 15% off your first orderPRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION PLANNER - https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zSTRAVA - Use code TEA for 20% off an annual membership - #StravaPartner #Adhttps://www.strava.com/subscribe/checkout?code=TEAASCEND APP - Use code TeaandTrails30 to receive 30% off a monthly subscription.https://ascendtrailapp.avln.me/c/MOwNWISPDOwiContent may contain affiliate links which help support and grow this channel at no extra cost to you.Brew with the Coaches - CLICK HEREHardmoors - https://www.hardmoors110.org.uk/Trail Outlaws - https://www.trailoutlaws.com/13 Valleys Ultra - https://www.13valleysultra.com/Beyond Trails - https://www.beyondtrails.co.uk/Hellfire Events - https://www.hellfireevents.com/Dales Runner - https://dalesrunner.co.uk/Hannah Walsh - https://www.hannahwalsh.co.uk/Punk Panther - https://www.punkpanther.co.uk/Pen Llyn Ultra - https://penllyn.niftyentries.com/Raw Adventures - https://www.raw-adventures.co.uk/XNRG - https://www.xnrg.co.uk/

When she's not training, she's usually outside exploring trails with her dog or experimenting in the kitchen. In this episode, Stevie breaks down what fueling actually looks like for everyday runners, not just elites, and why so many people are unintentionally underfueling their training. The conversation covers carbohydrates, hydration, sodium, and protein, with a focus on what's realistic to execute in both training and racing. They also get into how fueling impacts recovery, energy levels, and long-term performance, especially for runners balancing training with work, family, and everything else in life. This isn't about chasing perfect numbers. It's about understanding your needs, being consistent, and making fueling something that supports your training instead of holding it back.Jon and Stevie talk about:• what “high carb fueling” actually means and why it's individualized• how to think about fueling for long runs, races, and everyday training• why most runners are underfueling their weekly training volume• how carbs support performance, recovery, and adaptation• hydration, sodium needs, and how to know if you're a heavy sweater• fueling for longer efforts like marathons and ultras• when and why to incorporate protein into long efforts• balancing carbs and protein without overcorrecting• how to identify misleading nutrition advice online• why practical, consistent fueling matters more than perfect plansStay connected:Follow Stevie on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stevielynlyn/Listen to Real Fuel Podcast hosted by Stevie Smith: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/real-fuel-with-sls/id1746341651Stevie's website: https://stevielynrd.comThis episode is supported by:Precision Fuel & Hydration - Dial your fueling in this year. Both hosts are feeling a bit bruised this week. Gary's wrestling with the mental load & that feeling when training somehow leaks into every corner of your life, and Eddie's running on fumes, her usually eternal mojo having wandered off for a little holiday. Thankfully, you lot are bringing the inspiration with some absolutely mind‑blowing Strava updates.Fueling for a road marathon has been a hot topic lately, so we're diving in with some tips and the strategies that have actually worked for us over the years. And in this week's Tales from the Trails, things get emotional. Listener Colin Young shares a beautiful, heavy flex tribute to David Parish, who sadly passed away recently. This week, we're joined by Kitty‑Leigh Oxley for a deep dive into the 2026 Community Traverse. The Community Traverse is a race with an extraordinary story, born from the ashes of the cancelled Northern Traverse, it became a shining example of what happens when community takes action.Kitty, David, and a band of loyal and dedicated volunteers pulled together at short notice, some even giving up their own race so others could still experience the magic of the Wainwrights Coast‑to‑Coast National Trail. We chat about the seed of the idea, how it grew into a fully-fledged event, the joy of making it happen, and what exciting plans are already brewing for 2027.https://communitytraverse.co.uk/HARRIER - Use code TATP10 for 10% off - https://harrierrunfree.avln.me/c/qXhnTgIdEMeaXMILES UK - Listeners receive 10% of their order value back as store credit via the link - https://xmiles.avln.me/c/RiwxnARvfHeRFENIX LIGHT LTD - Use code T&T5 for 5% - https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/PRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION - Use code TEA2026 for 15% off your first orderPRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION PLANNER - https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zSTRAVA - Use code TEA for 20% off an annual membership - #StravaPartner #Adhttps://www.strava.com/subscribe/checkout?code=TEAASCEND APP - Use code TeaandTrails30 to receive 30% off a monthly subscription.https://ascendtrailapp.avln.me/c/MOwNWISPDOwiContent may contain affiliate links which help support and grow this channel at no extra cost to you.Brew with the Coaches - CLICK HEREHardmoors - https://www.hardmoors110.org.uk/Trail Outlaws - https://www.trailoutlaws.com/13 Valleys Ultra - https://www.13valleysultra.com/Beyond Trails - https://www.beyondtrails.co.uk/Hellfire Events - https://www.hellfireevents.com/Dales Runner - https://dalesrunner.co.uk/Hannah Walsh - https://www.hannahwalsh.co.uk/Punk Panther - https://www.punkpanther.co.uk/Pen Llyn Ultra - https://penllyn.niftyentries.com/Raw Adventures - https://www.raw-adventures.co.uk/XNRG - https://www.xnrg.co.uk/
From immigrating to the U.S. at 12 years old to representing Cape Verde at the Olympics, Ruben Sança's story is one of consistency, patience, and staying in it long after most people step away.Ruben Sança is a Cape Verdean Olympian and elite distance runner who competed in the 5,000 meters at the 2012 Olympic Games in London after previously representing Cape Verde at the 2011 World Championships. He is a former standout at UMass Lowell, earning multiple All-America honors and helping lead the program to conference championships during his collegiate career. Sança holds multiple Cape Verdean national records and has run personal bests of 1:05 in the half marathon and 2:18 in the marathon while competing internationally and across the U.S. road racing circuit. In addition to competing, he coaches athletes and works professionally in leadership roles focused on education and opportunity for students.Ruben talks about how his relationship with running has evolved over time, from thinking he was “running across the country” in middle school to building the kind of durability that allows him to train at a high level for decades. There's also a constant theme of balance. Balancing training with a career. Knowing when to push and when to back off. Building a life that supports running, not one that's consumed by it.Jon and Ruben get into:• growing up in Boston as an immigrant and finding running by accident• why he never wanted to think of himself as “gifted”• building durability and handling high mileage over time• transitioning from track to the marathon• representing Cape Verde at the 2012 Olympics• why he's going after LA 2028 at age 41• managing 100+ mile weeks with a full-time job• what sustainable excellence actually looks like• confidence, belonging, and showing up to races differently• the growth of running culture in Dorchester and Roxbury• why community matters more than paceThis is a conversation for anyone trying to figure out how to do both, pursue something meaningful while building a full life around it.Stay connected:Follow Ruben: https://www.instagram.com/rubenpsanca/This episode is supported by:Precision Fuel & Hydration - Dial your fueling in this year. Robyn Lesh is one of the most interesting athletes in trail running right now because of how quickly she's figuring things out and the results that are coming with it.A former competitive sailor and MIT-trained engineer, Robyn came into trail running without a traditional background in the sport. In just a few years, she's gone from learning how to pace her first ultras to racing at the front of some of the most competitive fields in the world. This conversation digs into that progression. What it actually feels like to step up in distance. How you learn to push deeper when you don't know where the limit is. And what happens when you stop racing cautiously and start racing to compete. There's also a lot here beyond results. Robyn shares how her background in sailing shaped her mindset, why she initially stepped away from being an athlete, and what brought her back. The conversation touches on sponsorship, learning in real time, and the moments in races where things start to go sideways — and you have to decide whether to back off or keep going. It's an honest look at what it means to still be learning while showing up at a high level, and why that might actually be the advantage. This episode is edited and produced by the Sandyboy Productions Podcast Network.A big shout out to our new sponsor Precision Fuel & Hydration. If you've signed up for an Ironman this year, this is the point where things start to get real. You're no longer thinking about training… you're already in it. And for many athletes, this is the phase where small cracks begin to appear. Missed sessions, niggles, fatigue, and a growing sense of uncertainty about whether you're actually on track. In this episode, Simon and Beth walk through the key questions every Ironman athlete should be asking 3 to 6 months out from race day. Not to create panic, but to provide a clear and honest sense-check of where you are right now. Because at this stage, it's not about doing more. It's about doing the right things consistently, staying healthy, and making sure you arrive at the start line ready to execute. 5 Key Talking Points This phase of training is where most Ironman campaigns either come together or begin to unravel. Consistency matters more than volume. Stop-start training is a major red flag. Durability is critical, especially for older athletes managing fatigue and recovery. Race-specific preparation, including pacing and nutrition, must be practised well before race day. The goal now is not to get dramatically fitter, but to protect your fitness and stay healthy. 3 Takeaways Be honest about where you are. Small issues now can become big problems later. Focus on consistency, recovery, and smart training rather than chasing more volume. Your primary goal is to arrive at the start line healthy, not exhausted or injured. Key Quote “The goal now isn't to get fitter… it's to arrive at the start line healthy.” FREE Download

There isn't one way into trail running, and Shea Aquilano is a perfect example of that. In this episode, Hilary sits down with Shea to talk through her path from Midwest soccer player to professional trail runner based in Boulder. Without the traditional track or cross country background, she built her way into the sport through curiosity, patience, and a willingness to figure things out in real time.A lot of the conversation centers around Black Canyon, a race she's returned to year after year. Her progression on that course reflects what it actually looks like to improve in trail running. Learning how to manage effort, adjust when things go sideways, and keep showing up even when the outcome is uncertain. They also get into the mental side of the sport. What it means to sit with discomfort, how to respond when a race doesn't go to plan, and why failure is part of the process rather than something to avoid. It's a conversation about patience, perspective, and building something over time rather than chasing quick results. This episode is edited and produced by the Sandyboy Productions Podcast Network.A big shout out to our sponsor Precision Fuel & Hydration. Plans shift quickly this time of year, and this episode reflects that in real time. Katie and Leah catch up on how their race schedules have evolved over the past few weeks, including a pivot away from Madeira and a move toward more local racing. What started as a clear plan has turned into something more flexible, shaped by travel, timing, and everything else happening alongside training. With that, UTMB preparation is starting to feel more real. The conversation touches on what that shift looks like, both physically and mentally, as training becomes more intentional and the season begins to take shape.
