For those of you who aren't familiar, she's one of the most transformative coaches in the sport. She's built BYU's women's cross country program and distance program into a national powerhouse, coaching NCAA champions, Olympians, and creating one of the strongest cultures in collegiate running. Now she's stepping into an even bigger role, leading a professional training group with Nike while continuing to coach at BYU. Nike has announced Swoosh TC for Oregon, Utah, and Arizona. It's being described by the brand as a network of elite athletes, coaches, and innovators working together to push the boundaries of performance and progress. Wilma Nielsen, the Swedish mid-distance phenom from Oregon, joins the show today to discuss her recent breakthroughs in running. Wilma is fresh off breaking the school record in the mile in January at the Dr. Sander Scorcher indoor meet at the Armory in New York. This six-second PR places her number three all time in the NCAA for the indoor mile and number two on Sweden's all-time indoor list. Wilma is a two-time All-American and three-time Swedish National Champion. She won the bronze medal at the European U23 Championships in Estonia where she ran a 2:02.29 in the 800m. Wilma has run collegiately for Bradley University, the University of Washington and now Oregon. Wilma was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. She has a twin sister, Julia–who was a package deal with her at Bradley–as well as older siblings Simon and Elisabeth, the latter of who was a Swedish National Championship finalist in the 800m in 2019 and 2020. Needless to say, running was a fixture in the Nielsen household. Wilma was running fast even in her high school days, logging PRs of 58.19 in the 400m, 2:10.01 in the 800m and 4:31.59 in the 1,500m. Since she started running collegiately, she has lowered those to 57.50 in the 400m, 2:02.26 in the 800m, 4:07.38 in the 1500m and the aforementioned 4:25.89 mile. "At a marathon finish line — especially this marathon finish line — you see the best of humanity." Every year on the first Sunday of November, more than 50,000 runners, 10,000 volunteers, and two million spectators will descend on the five boroughs for one reason: the TCS New York City Marathon. This episode is your unofficial guide to the iconic 26.2-mile race. Two and a half jam-packed hours of New York City Marathon-related information. And this episode isn't just for the marathoners: We have tips for spectators, a breakdown of how to get into the race in the future, and general advice for marathon-day fueling and hydrating. As for my New York City Marathon love affair: This race is my Super Bowl, my Christmas, my birthday, Valentine's Day, my favorite day of the year. It was the first marathon I ever watched, back in 2008, when I went out to cheer for a coworker who was running the race. (Thanks for the inspiration, Therese!) I've run it three times — in 2013, 2014, and 2016 — and volunteered once, in 2015, at a fluid station in Brooklyn. In 2017, I cheered on “First and Fifth,” and in 2018, at three weeks postpartum, going to the New York City Marathon was my first outing since having a baby. I sat in the grandstands as Shalane Flanagan finished third, and pumped in a “fancy” (you know, the nice kind!) finish line porta potty. Then, in 2019, I got the best seat in the house for the first time: New York City Marathon finish line announcer. After announcing at the finish and at the Finish Line After Dark in 2019, 2021, and 2022, last year I made my NYC TV debut. I joined the broadcast talent team as a reporter on the international feed, and was featured on the WABC7 local broadcast. This year: They're putting me on TV again! In addition to hosting two live shows during New York City Marathon weekend, on race day I'll be part of the ESPN2 and WABC7 broadcasts as a finish line reporter, and I'll return to the finish line for the 3–5 PM broadcast on ABC. Today on the podcast is Oregon Duck, Maddy Elmore! Maddy has quickly established herself over the past year as one of the top runners in the NCAA. She's run three school records over the past few months. In December she broke the indoor mark in the 3,000 with her time of 8:50.43. She then anchored the distance medley relay to a time of 10:47.50 during the Razorback Invitational in January. And then, just a few short weeks ago, Maddy broke the 39-year-old program record in the women's 5,000 meters with her victory in 15 minutes 15.79 seconds during the Stanford Invitational meet in Stanford, California. Her previous best was 16:11.77. This season, Maddy is looking to continue to turn heads and surprise people with her record-breaking performances. Before her time at Oregon, she ran for South Eugene High School where she was the 2019 OSAA 6A state champion at 1500 meters. "Starting to talk with Alistair (Cragg), I was really excited about his ambition and excitement for the (PUMA Elite) team. He wanted to create a situation where we would be contending for World teams, Olympic teams and eventually contending on those bigger stages as well. At first, hearing those goals sounded a little bit scary. Exciting, but scary. So it's really cool to start seeing some of it actually come together." My guest for today's episode is Fiona O'Keeffe – the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials champion. She ran the fastest marathon debut in American history with a 2:22:10 performance to win and also break the previous Marathon Trials record held by Shalane Flanagan from 2012. She will be joined at the Paris Olympics by American record holder Emily Sisson and Dakotah Lindwurm. O'Keeffe was so impressive in the Orlando heat and pressed from the front to pull away from her competitors about 19 miles into the race. She ran all of the last few miles under 5:30 but threw down a 5:09 at Mile 25. She ended up winning by more than 30 seconds. "At a marathon finish line — especially this marathon finish line — you see the best of humanity." Every year on the first Sunday of November, more than 50,000 runners, 10,000 volunteers, and two million spectators will descend on the five boroughs for one reason: the TCS New York City Marathon. This episode is your unofficial guide to the iconic 26.2-mile race. Two and a half jam-packed hours of New York City Marathon-related information, just in time for the taper. And this episode isn't just for the marathoners: We have tips for spectators, a breakdown of how to get into the race in the future, and general advice for marathon-day fueling and hydrating. As for my New York City Marathon love affair: This race is my Super Bowl, my Christmas, my birthday, Valentine's Day, my favorite day of the year. It was the first marathon I ever watched, back in 2008, when I went out to cheer for a coworker who was running the race. (Thanks for the inspiration, Therese!) I've run it three times — in 2013, 2014, and 2016 — and volunteered once, in 2015, at a fluid station in Brooklyn. In 2017, I cheered on “First and Fifth,” and in 2018, at three weeks postpartum, going to the New York City Marathon was my first outing since having a baby. I sat in the grandstands as Shalane Flanagan finished third, and pumped in a "fancy" (you know, the nice kind!) finish line porta potty. Then, in 2019, I got the best seat in the house for the first time: New York City Marathon finish line announcer. After announcing at the finish and at the Finish Line After Dark in 2019, 2021, and 2022, this year I'm trying something a little different. I'm joining the broadcast talent team as a reporter on the international feed. I'll be interviewing runners at the start and finish lines, and then I'll join the ABC/ESPN2 broadcast team for more finish line coverage on the local broadcast (alongside Becs Gentry!).
