Often times runners in this group assume that they need to run a 20 miler during marathon training to be prepared to race day. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP I love riding my bike with my son. My boy Marlow and I head out when we can and boost around LanVegas on the bikes, and he loves it. It's great to spend time together and see the little man starting to enjoy bikes and being outdoors as much as I did when I was a kid.  But, my guests on this month's episode of Life In The Peloton take on father-and-son cycling adventures. Based over in the North of England, Rich and James Rothwell are an adventurous, off-road, ultra-cycling father and son duo who have undertaken some massive rides together.  Rich, a lifelong mountain biker, coach, and experienced ultra racer, got his son James into cycling from a young age. Still only 14 years old, James has already ticked off some absolutely huge rides on some world-renowned trails like the Highland Trail 550 and the AZT800 out in the USA.  I really wanted to chat to these guys to hear how they started riding together, what their epic adventures look like, and just how far a young talent like James will go in the world of cycling. I found it really inspiring to hear Rich's relaxed, supportive approach in helping James keep the enjoyment, and I also loved hearing how young James supports his old man out there on the trails, too!  I hope Marlow can pick up a thing or two and give me a push or a spoonful of peanut butter when I'm in a bit of a hole next time we head out on the bikes.  Guys, I hope you like this episode. To the mums and dads out there, it's a great listen if you want to get your kids into bike riding and kids, if you've ever wanted to get out on a cycling adventure with your parents, I hope this inspires you.  Cheers Mitch This episode is brought to you by our mates at Shokz – the world leaders in open-ear, bone-conduction headphones. Then we're tackling one of the most confusing topics in nutrition: ultra processed foods (UPFs). From the additives hiding in our everyday favourites to the impact on gut health, inflammation and chronic disease, we're breaking down what the science actually says and where the gaps still are. We're looking at how UPFs are defined, the most common ones in our diets, and how our eating habits today compare to our grandparents' generation. We're also exploring the links with obesity, mental health and cancer risk, plus why cost and access play such a big role in the conversation. Most importantly, we're sharing simple, realistic swaps that make a difference without cutting out joy, from building more meals around whole foods to knowing when an additive is worth paying attention to. She's worked with athletes across the globe, including supporting Olympic (London, 2012), Paralympic (Rio, 2016) and Commonwealth (Queensland, 2018) teams. We want to give listeners a head's up that we will be talking about eating disorders and REDs during this episode. What is REDs (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) The basis of REDs is low energy availability, or insufficient energy in the body to allow for the work that the individual wants to do. Low energy availability comes with a cost to our sport but also is costly to all the biological processes in our body, including the brain, heart, lungs, hormonal, and digestive systems. When low energy availability is combined with under recovery (training and general life stresses can all contribute to this) it throws the body into REDs. Some people can have unintentional or accidental REDs where the person doesn't understand how much energy is required to maintain their biological functions and the training load. On the other hand, intentional REDs is a conscious decision to restrict intake or overtrain and usually involves some aspects of disordered eating and/or exercise dependency. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP The sport of professional cycling has everything. Dramatic storylines, heroic champions, tear jerking wins, and more. But, one thing it seems to be lacking is cash.  Every year, it seems like teams have to fight harder and harder to get sponsorship to pay their riders. Compared to the likes of soccer and other mainstream sports, budgets in cycling are a drop in the ocean.  I wanted to find out how professional cycling is able to keep rolling despite the financial struggles, and see if there's anything teams can do to increase their revenue and grow the sport as a whole, so I spoke to some key stakeholders in the sport to find out more.  In this special edition of Life In The Peloton, I speak to my first team boss and manager of Team Picnic Post NL, Iwan Spekenbrink, General Race Director of Flander's Classics, Scott Sunderland, current pro seeing out his last season after 17 years as a rider, Simon Clarke, Bas Tietema, owner of TDT Unibet Rockets - the new kids on the block looking to redefine the fan - team relationship through storytelling alongside chasing results, and finally Dr Cillian Kelly; a master statistician with the cold hard facts on the situation to see if it is really as bleak as it seems.  Guys, this episode is a deep dive into the sport we all love to find out if it has a future that's financially sustainable, or if teams are always going to be scratching around for sponsorship or closing altogether.  Thanks to all my interviewees for speaking to me, and the wider Life In The Peloton team for helping pull this mammoth episode together. I hope you enjoy it! Cheers! Mitch ----more---- This episode is exclusively being brought to you by the Tour Down Under, stages are set, the 2026 stages have been announced! In this episode of Trail Runner Nation, cognitive neuroscientist and endurance athlete Dr. Scott Frey reveals how brain training can unlock new levels of performance for trail and ultrarunners. He explains that while most athletes focus on the physical, it's often the brain that sets the limits—through perceived effort, cognitive fatigue, and pain signals. Dr. Frey introduces his Brain Endurance System Training (BEST), a method that combines cognitive and physical training to build mental strength and resilience. We talk about managing cognitive load, how the brain predicts fatigue, and why a mental taper can be just as important as a physical one. Listeners will learn how to train smarter, race longer, and enjoy the sport deeper by understanding the true power of the brain.  Find out more about BEST and Dr. Frey at Cerebral Performance Episode Sponsors: Janji, Use code TRAILRUNNER for 10% off Shokz, Use code TRN10 for 10% off Amazfit - T-Rex 3: Get 15% off Oikos Triple Zero Get the NEW "1 > 0" running hat HERE.  Limited supply

Under the Hood: Back with Dr. Andre Le Gerche to Check My Heart

Life in the Peloton

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP It's July, which means we're just days away from the Tour de France. I don't know about you, but I am absolutely frothing for this year's race to kick off. My heart is racing just thinking about it…and that's exactly what this month's episode is all about; my heart. Guys, this month's episode of Life In The Peloton is one for all you training geeks out there. It's time for me to take another look ‘under the hood' and get my ticker checked out, so I headed back to the lab for a catch up with my old mate Dr. Andre Le Gerche. If you don't recognise that name, Andre is one of the world's leading experts in Sports Cardiology, whose research and clinical work focuses on the effect of exercise on the human heart.  Since the start of my professional cycling career all those years ago, I've been seeing Andre every few years to take part in a study he's conducting on elite athletes' hearts, heart function, and heart health. I last recorded with Andre back in 2022, so if you haven't heard that ep get across and bring yourself up to speed on the study, and what my last round of testing showed just after I retired from Pro Cycling. If you don't know, the UCI makes sure that every pro rider undergoes a series of heart tests on their heart every off season ‘with an aim to reduce - as far as possible - the risk of sudden cardiac death during sporting activity' - scary stuff, right? Andre's study goes one further, looking to understand the longer term effects of a life of endurance sport.  I won't lie, guys, this is a big topic - and I won't pretend I'm an expert on Sports Cardiology! But, what I really love about working with Andre and his team is the way they explain the results of their findings to nuffies like me. I hope you like this episode, guys - hopefully, you get a better idea of what goes on under the hood of these elite athletes you're about to watch rip around France for the next month. My next round of testing with Andre isn't until 2030, now, so I'll see you in 5 years, Andre! Cheers! Mitch ----more---- If you didn't catch it, Andre and I first sat down about a couple of years ago to chat all things athlete's heart — what years of racing does to it, how it recovers (or doesn't) after retirement, and why some ex-pros might need to “de-train” their hearts. That ep lays the groundwork for this follow-up, so if you're keen to hear how it all started, you can check it out here. This episode is brought to you by our mates at Saily – the simple mobile app that makes managing your subscriptions dead easy. Whether it's race passes, streaming services, or random apps you forgot you signed up for, Saily tracks it all in one place and even helps you cancel the ones you're not using. Hansen also won the 5000m at the Adelaide Invitational and the Hong Kong Diamond Mile in 2017. He discusses his current training in Launceston, Tasmania, which involves lightening his load for an upcoming race. He explains his decision to focus on domestic races this season due to his partner expecting a baby in July. The conversation then delves into Hansen's personal bests, including 1:49.7 for 800m, 3:36.8 for 1500m (a recent achievement he's particularly proud of), 3:57.2 for the mile, 7:49 for 3000m, 13:31 (track) and 13:34 (road) for 5000m, and a significantly faster 28:20 for 10km on the road compared to his 29:02 track PB, which he attributes partly to super shoes. He also touches on his wins at the Point to Pinnacle half marathon, a challenging uphill race he uses for hill training. Hansen discusses managing pre-race nerves, especially for big races like Nationals, and his self-coaching philosophy, which has been influenced by various coaches over the years. He describes his current training week. He acknowledges his naturally muscular build, which sets him apart from typical distance runners, stemming from a dedicated gym routine in his younger years. Join me for a 4 hour gravel ride with aerobars on a singlespeed in Texas! Show Notes: History of and how to best enjoy one of these "ride along" shows. Assioma power pedals How gravel tires open up more paved but sketchy connector roads Sharrows! Reading off power and cadence while climbing. Dropping into Lick Creek Park with heavy gravel Garmin Forerunner 970 killer features review Ribbon Snakes and Green Snakes Thank you Lachlan Morton for making pink jerseys cool. Coasting more on longer rides will actually make you go faster in the end. How ranchers turn flatbed railroad cars into small bridges. Riding upright when super hot might overall be faster than low and aero due to the cooling. Rock Bros arm coolers are interesting - solid on one side and mesh on the other. For sun block / cooling. Fueling trick - clear bottles so you can see how much you've used to help stay on track. Meshy stuff WAY better in hot conditions. Dramatic cooling effect compared to classic cycling kit. Garmin 970 added rucking, sapphire glass, flashlight, speaker and microphone, but no voice notes... Fenix is overkill for most people, and that adds weight and makes it a poor running watch. Front-facing collision warning radar would be cool device since you can hit a car with your head down. Story how I was friends with the inventor of Morf-tech bars and he died from a crash like that. Interesting nuance of singlespeeding - sometimes faster on long rides by capping effort on flats and downhills? "Unhurried" vs. "Slow Living". Difference is intention and middle pathing. Getting water from country gas station. Cool soundscape. Surrounded by Roadies. Drifting in gravel turns is FUN. Uhurried more like Taoism "Flow" than Slow Living is. Miniature compass on handlebars end up being better than I thought! Use to better work with wind and navigation, no batteries. How I'm using my Garmin 945 watch to send HR to my bike computer. People are regressing in response to constant news agitation. Need more calm. Do you reeeeaaaally need a smart watch? "Unhurried" co-opted by Christian movement? Religion vs. Philosophy in Communism. Nishiki is 90s aluminum. Rear end is stiff like a jackhammer. Taking a heat break in a cornfield. How red-shouldered blackbirds are territorial and dive bomb you. How I got the nickname “Cool Breeze”. What different formats work best for Instagram, YouTube, and podcasts. Pausing to do things right when being unhurried instead of putting things off for later because you are in a rush. Trimming workouts down in time if tired instead of just going easier. Set an end time for your workouts - more important than a start time. You want to be extremely relaxed in aero position. Why flat terrain wears you out more than rolling. Singlespeed flatbar gravel bike is oddly like 80s BMX bikes. The truth about drinking from the hose and not being let in the house. How we get rolling hills with steep gully walls. How to "row" your bike up steep hills. Trick to keep your water bladder in the freezer to stop mold and also have ice water on your hot rides. More on "time capping" to give you more free time. The coolest thing about gravel isn't the gravel, it's the lack of cars. Rear radar apps on your phone will play the alerts through your headphones too. Get the swimming version of Shokz headphones if you want them to be truly sweatproof. Signs of nerve damage in feet. How I got the nickname "Cool Breeze". Cooling down under a freeway bridge. 91 degrees in the shade. Using cold soda to cool down faster from the inside out. Fueling 300 calories per hour using table sugar and a little bit of Gatorade powder and sodium citrate. Zen story of being unhurried to become enlightened. Hitting singletrack and pipeline road. Signs you're trying to do too much. The "shoot first, point later" concept of videoing your rides with an Insta360 camera. Lionel Sanders won a 70.3 Ride stats - 97 degrees, 63 miles, 4 hours and 11 minutes. Wrap up and family news!

"I've tried to take on that mindset for the last few years at these races, of, 'How do I show up as authentically as possible, as the Ali I know I am and want to be, while having fun, while being professional… What does that look like?' And I feel like I kind of nailed it this time around." There's nowhere I'd rather be on the third Monday in April than at the Boston Marathon finish line! This year, I was honored to be asked back to perform a variety of roles in Boston. I was one of the announcers at the Boston 5K, I hosted two panels and one live show, I was one of the race announcers at the finish on Marathon Monday, and I was the finish line reporter for the world feed broadcast. It was a fun, rewarding weekend that included quality time with my favorite people, my biggest live event ever, a million finish line hugs, a few too many after-parties, and so much more. "How can I not have success when I have this many people coming and supporting me?" On the Friday before the Boston Marathon, I hosted a panel at the race expo featuring three of Shokz-sponsored athletes: Hellen Obiri, Conner Mantz, and Dakotah Popehn. Hellen entered the race at the two-time defending champion, and she went on to finish second in 2:17:41, a significant personal best in a fast, gritty race. Conner, one of the best professional marathoners the United States has ever seen, ran hard and with heart, finishing fourth in 2:05:08, just seconds off the podium. And Dakotah, the smiley, speedy Paris Olympian, finished 16th in 2:26:09. In this conversation, these three runners talked about what success in Boston would look like for each of them and, of course, talked about what they like to listen to on the run, and shared their favorite sights and sounds of the Boston Marathon.  SPONSOR:  Shokz: Use code ALI for $10 off your next purchase.
