In this episode of Trail Runner Nation, cognitive neuroscientist and endurance athlete Dr. Scott Frey reveals how brain training can unlock new levels of performance for trail and ultrarunners. He explains that while most athletes focus on the physical, it's often the brain that sets the limits—through perceived effort, cognitive fatigue, and pain signals. Dr. Frey introduces his Brain Endurance System Training (BEST), a method that combines cognitive and physical training to build mental strength and resilience. We talk about managing cognitive load, how the brain predicts fatigue, and why a mental taper can be just as important as a physical one. Listeners will learn how to train smarter, race longer, and enjoy the sport deeper by understanding the true power of the brain.  Find out more about BEST and Dr. Frey at Cerebral Performance Episode Sponsors: Janji, Use code TRAILRUNNER for 10% off Shokz, Use code TRN10 for 10% off Amazfit - T-Rex 3: Get 15% off Oikos Triple Zero Get the NEW "1 > 0" running hat HERE.  Limited supply

Under the Hood: Back with Dr. Andre Le Gerche to Check My Heart

Life in the Peloton

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2025 60:33

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP It's July, which means we're just days away from the Tour de France. I don't know about you, but I am absolutely frothing for this year's race to kick off. My heart is racing just thinking about it…and that's exactly what this month's episode is all about; my heart. Guys, this month's episode of Life In The Peloton is one for all you training geeks out there. It's time for me to take another look ‘under the hood' and get my ticker checked out, so I headed back to the lab for a catch up with my old mate Dr. Andre Le Gerche. If you don't recognise that name, Andre is one of the world's leading experts in Sports Cardiology, whose research and clinical work focuses on the effect of exercise on the human heart.  Since the start of my professional cycling career all those years ago, I've been seeing Andre every few years to take part in a study he's conducting on elite athletes' hearts, heart function, and heart health. I last recorded with Andre back in 2022, so if you haven't heard that ep get across and bring yourself up to speed on the study, and what my last round of testing showed just after I retired from Pro Cycling. If you don't know, the UCI makes sure that every pro rider undergoes a series of heart tests on their heart every off season ‘with an aim to reduce - as far as possible - the risk of sudden cardiac death during sporting activity' - scary stuff, right? Andre's study goes one further, looking to understand the longer term effects of a life of endurance sport.  I won't lie, guys, this is a big topic - and I won't pretend I'm an expert on Sports Cardiology! But, what I really love about working with Andre and his team is the way they explain the results of their findings to nuffies like me. I hope you like this episode, guys - hopefully, you get a better idea of what goes on under the hood of these elite athletes you're about to watch rip around France for the next month. My next round of testing with Andre isn't until 2030, now, so I'll see you in 5 years, Andre! Cheers! Mitch ----more---- If you didn't catch it, Andre and I first sat down about a couple of years ago to chat all things athlete's heart — what years of racing does to it, how it recovers (or doesn't) after retirement, and why some ex-pros might need to “de-train” their hearts. That ep lays the groundwork for this follow-up, so if you're keen to hear how it all started, you can check it out here. This episode is brought to you by our mates at Saily – the simple mobile app that makes managing your subscriptions dead easy. Whether it's race passes, streaming services, or random apps you forgot you signed up for, Saily tracks it all in one place and even helps you cancel the ones you're not using. Join me for a 4 hour gravel ride with aerobars on a singlespeed in Texas! Show Notes: History of and how to best enjoy one of these "ride along" shows. Assioma power pedals How gravel tires open up more paved but sketchy connector roads Sharrows! Reading off power and cadence while climbing. Dropping into Lick Creek Park with heavy gravel Garmin Forerunner 970 killer features review Ribbon Snakes and Green Snakes Thank you Lachlan Morton for making pink jerseys cool. Coasting more on longer rides will actually make you go faster in the end. How ranchers turn flatbed railroad cars into small bridges. Riding upright when super hot might overall be faster than low and aero due to the cooling. Rock Bros arm coolers are interesting - solid on one side and mesh on the other. For sun block / cooling. Fueling trick - clear bottles so you can see how much you've used to help stay on track. Meshy stuff WAY better in hot conditions. Dramatic cooling effect compared to classic cycling kit. Garmin 970 added rucking, sapphire glass, flashlight, speaker and microphone, but no voice notes... Fenix is overkill for most people, and that adds weight and makes it a poor running watch. Front-facing collision warning radar would be cool device since you can hit a car with your head down. Story how I was friends with the inventor of Morf-tech bars and he died from a crash like that. Interesting nuance of singlespeeding - sometimes faster on long rides by capping effort on flats and downhills? "Unhurried" vs. "Slow Living". Difference is intention and middle pathing. Getting water from country gas station. Cool soundscape. Surrounded by Roadies. Drifting in gravel turns is FUN. Uhurried more like Taoism "Flow" than Slow Living is. Miniature compass on handlebars end up being better than I thought! Use to better work with wind and navigation, no batteries. How I'm using my Garmin 945 watch to send HR to my bike computer. People are regressing in response to constant news agitation. Need more calm. Do you reeeeaaaally need a smart watch? "Unhurried" co-opted by Christian movement? Religion vs. Philosophy in Communism. Nishiki is 90s aluminum. Rear end is stiff like a jackhammer. Taking a heat break in a cornfield. How red-shouldered blackbirds are territorial and dive bomb you. How I got the nickname “Cool Breeze”. What different formats work best for Instagram, YouTube, and podcasts. Pausing to do things right when being unhurried instead of putting things off for later because you are in a rush. Trimming workouts down in time if tired instead of just going easier. Set an end time for your workouts - more important than a start time. You want to be extremely relaxed in aero position. Why flat terrain wears you out more than rolling. Singlespeed flatbar gravel bike is oddly like 80s BMX bikes. The truth about drinking from the hose and not being let in the house. How we get rolling hills with steep gully walls. How to "row" your bike up steep hills. Trick to keep your water bladder in the freezer to stop mold and also have ice water on your hot rides. More on "time capping" to give you more free time. The coolest thing about gravel isn't the gravel, it's the lack of cars. Rear radar apps on your phone will play the alerts through your headphones too. Get the swimming version of Shokz headphones if you want them to be truly sweatproof. Signs of nerve damage in feet. How I got the nickname "Cool Breeze". Cooling down under a freeway bridge. 91 degrees in the shade. Using cold soda to cool down faster from the inside out. Fueling 300 calories per hour using table sugar and a little bit of Gatorade powder and sodium citrate. Zen story of being unhurried to become enlightened. Hitting singletrack and pipeline road. Signs you're trying to do too much. The "shoot first, point later" concept of videoing your rides with an Insta360 camera. Lionel Sanders won a 70.3 Ride stats - 97 degrees, 63 miles, 4 hours and 11 minutes. Wrap up and family news!

And I feel like I kind of nailed it this time around." There's nowhere I'd rather be on the third Monday in April than at the Boston Marathon finish line! This year, I was honored to be asked back to perform a variety of roles in Boston. I was one of the announcers at the Boston 5K, I hosted two panels and one live show, I was one of the race announcers at the finish on Marathon Monday, and I was the finish line reporter for the world feed broadcast. Hellen entered the race at the two-time defending champion, and she went on to finish second in 2:17:41, a significant personal best in a fast, gritty race. Conner, one of the best professional marathoners the United States has ever seen, ran hard and with heart, finishing fourth in 2:05:08, just seconds off the podium. And Dakotah, the smiley, speedy Paris Olympian, finished 16th in 2:26:09. The conversation also highlights how minimalism and letting go of emotional baggage can improve focus and performance. Authenticity, dedication, and resilience are key to achieving balance across physical, mental, and emotional challenges. There is an unwritten code of ethics promoting health, respect, and community support. in trail running.  It has existed for longer than any of us.  As a tribe or community, we need to know, share, and protect this code.  Coach Jimmy Dean Freeman rejoins us after many years to help us understand part of this code.  The SoCal Coyotes running club created a short list of some of these codes.  This is not comprehensive but shares some of the tenants we all live by and enjoy.  We did an episode on this code, aka Coyote Bushido, back in 2012 and reviewed it on an episode in 2020 to see if it is still pertinent. We start the conversation by talking about the resilience of the trail-running community, particularly in Southern California, as it faces challenges like natural disasters. It's beginning to look a lot like… a bumper Christmas episode from The Cycling Podcast Féminin. In the true style of an old Christmas TV special, this episode has a bit of everything: chat, music, cameos from a few familiar voices and of course the feared and revered Christmas quiz.  First up, Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Rebecca Charlton pull out their favourite moments from an exhilarating and sometimes contentious year of cycling. The hosts are spoilt for choice in a season which saw the closest ever finish to a Tour de France, an Olympic road race which came down to the final kilometre and a Classics season which saw the spoils divided among comeback queens and breakthrough stars. Add to that more than a few moments of team in-fighting playing out on the road and the result is one of the best racing seasons in memory. Then Denny and Rebecca go head-to-head as we look to crown our 2024 Christmas quiz champion. There's a brand new round this year - the 'What's That Sound?' round to add to returning favourites 'Blankety Crank' and 'Cryptic Criterium'. And it wouldn't be our Christmas quiz without some squabbling, upset and a deterioration in professionalism from all involved. Also on the agenda: Mastermind board games, the Tour de Wandsworth and a Juliette Labous cocktail.
