What if you accomplished everything you wanted, but still felt empty?Pierce Showe is in the business of extreme discipline — a language spoken by the world's top performers. He spent the early part of his career as the right hand to Super Bowl champion Steve Weatherford before stepping fully into his calling as a faith-driven endurance athlete and coach. He's completed multiple 100- and 200-mile ultramarathons, an Ironman, and an Ultraman — pushing human limits with grit, purpose, and an unshakable faith in God. Most recently, Pierce broke the Guinness World Record for most consecutive treadmill half-marathons (153 days) to raise awareness for healthier school meals and the broken food system in America. While Pierce's faith is central to his life and message, his experiences and insights resonate with both faith-based and secular audiences. Whether speaking to entrepreneurs, athletes, or personal growth communities, he tailors each conversation to inspire action, build discipline, and help listeners push past their perceived limits.Today, he helps high-achieving entrepreneurs, leaders, and everyday athletes run the race set before them — physically, mentally, and spiritually — through the same principles of discipline, consistency, and faith that have shaped his life.Jon chats with Pierce about:How Faith Grounds Pierce in Life, Running, and BusinessHow he broke a Guiness World RecordHis second time running the Leadville 100His passion for addressing problems with the US Food SystemHis Locked-In Mental Approach to Succeed in RacesStay connected:Follow Pierce:Instagram: instagram.com/pierceshoweYouTube: youtube.com/@pierceshoweWebsite: www.runyourrace.comThis episode is supported by:Boulderthon: Our favorite Colorado race event with a variety of distances. We look at the new Shokz OpenDots ONE earbuds, see more about them here. Shokz OpenDots ONE earbuds reviewed These ear buds clip on in a different way than you might have used before. Our testers wondered if this was a gimmick, and, or an attempt to differentiate and separate this product from other ones on the market. The PR team are naturally aiming to promote this point of difference as a benefit of course, though they do make the fair point that you no need to worry about distinguishing which one is left, and which is the right one. This might be a love or hate feature for some people, and even possibly a gender question too, in terms of who this works for, and who is more ambivalent about it. That said, dropping your singular, unattached ear bud was always a drag, and this could be an elegant, effect solution to that issue. The product blurb describes the user options as intuitive. Our tester was less sure about this, but was open to the idea that they might potentially become familiar with it, so this might not necessarily be an issue, but rather a learning curve. The sound quality is good, and the charging pod is great too, offering you a few ways to quickly recharge it. The earbuds also give a good period of use too, so these all scored well. The app is good too, for battery life, and also a find my earbud feature which is logical but great and the use case benefits are clear. Overall, once our testers got used the different method of wearing them (dealing with change issues perchance) they liked them and have offered to keep using, ahem, testing them for the next month or two. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP Mike Woods has achieved a lot in his cycling career. Despite not turning pro until he was 30, he's won stages at the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, and stood on the podium at Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the World Championships. A proud Canadian, Woodsy's represented his nation at the Olympics and the Worlds, and flown the Maple Leaf jersey as natty champ. Earlier this year, Mike announced that 2025 would be his final year in the pro peloton, and he was going to come across to the world of retired pro cyclists. He's under no illusion that the sport is only getting harder, and made the call to leave the young megastars to it, put his family first, and continue enjoying the bike - and his running - with a more relaxed mindset. We were teammates for a few years back on EF, and I loved training hard in the mountains of Andorra with Woodsy back in the good old days before 120 grams of carbs an hour. A three-time guest on the pod, I wanted to catch up with him in the last few weeks of his career before he hangs it up for good for one last ep. of Life In The Peloton. We talk about all sorts of things in this one, guys. There's some heavy-hitting questions to find out more about what makes Woodsy tick, and he gives me a quick lesson in Canadian Ice Hockey team politics. I also impart a bit of wisdom on Mike to let him know what he's in for as he leaves the world of pro cycling behind and adjusts to life on the other side. Guys, I hope you enjoy this pod. I really wanted to speak to Mike one last time, and I hope you enjoy hearing his honest thoughts about all things pro cycling and beyond. Woodsy - congrats on a great career, mate. Enjoy your last races and being able to bring the curtain down back home in Canada. Can't wait for a death ride out of Andorra soon. In this Coach's Corner episode, Ruth Atkinson from McKirdy Trained talks about how she plans long runs for runners who run the marathon in 4:30 or slower. This is a question we get all the time via DM's and email and we were excited to talk it out. Often times runners in this group assume that they need to run a 20 miler during marathon training to be prepared to race day. Ruth helps us de-bunk that myth and offers up a much better way to schedule training. You can follow Ruth at www.instagram.com/runwithruth. In this engaging conversation, Laura Thweatt shares how she was able to develop a mindset for race day that helped propel her to the top of the sport. She discusses the evolution of her mindset throughout her athletic career, particularly focusing on the mental preparation required for her experiences at the Olympic Trials, the challenges faced during races, and the importance of confidence and self-belief. She also offers insights into her coaching philosophy, emphasizing the need for athletes to find their own connection to the sport and manage the pressures that come with competition. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP I love riding my bike with my son. My boy Marlow and I head out when we can and boost around LanVegas on the bikes, and he loves it. It's great to spend time together and see the little man starting to enjoy bikes and being outdoors as much as I did when I was a kid. But, my guests on this month's episode of Life In The Peloton take on father-and-son cycling adventures. Based over in the North of England, Rich and James Rothwell are an adventurous, off-road, ultra-cycling father and son duo who have undertaken some massive rides together. Rich, a lifelong mountain biker, coach, and experienced ultra racer, got his son James into cycling from a young age. Still only 14 years old, James has already ticked off some absolutely huge rides on some world-renowned trails like the Highland Trail 550 and the AZT800 out in the USA. I really wanted to chat to these guys to hear how they started riding together, what their epic adventures look like, and just how far a young talent like James will go in the world of cycling. I found it really inspiring to hear Rich's relaxed, supportive approach in helping James keep the enjoyment, and I also loved hearing how young James supports his old man out there on the trails, too! I hope Marlow can pick up a thing or two and give me a push or a spoonful of peanut butter when I'm in a bit of a hole next time we head out on the bikes. Guys, I hope you like this episode. To the mums and dads out there, it's a great listen if you want to get your kids into bike riding and kids, if you've ever wanted to get out on a cycling adventure with your parents, I hope this inspires you. Welcome to another special live episode of The Wellness Scoop. We're starting with a calming five-minute meditation led by Cordelia Simpson to help you pause, breathe and refill your cup before diving in. Then we're tackling one of the most confusing topics in nutrition: ultra processed foods (UPFs). From the additives hiding in our everyday favourites to the impact on gut health, inflammation and chronic disease, we're breaking down what the science actually says and where the gaps still are. We're looking at how UPFs are defined, the most common ones in our diets, and how our eating habits today compare to our grandparents' generation. We're also exploring the links with obesity, mental health and cancer risk, plus why cost and access play such a big role in the conversation. Most importantly, we're sharing simple, realistic swaps that make a difference without cutting out joy, from building more meals around whole foods to knowing when an additive is worth paying attention to. In this episode we speak with Renee McGregor -sports dietitian and author of the book, 'Fuel for Thought: A Practical Guide to Fueling for Your Adventures'. [powerpress] Renee McGregor is a leading sports dietitian, specialising in Eating Disorders, REDs, The Female Athlete, Athlete Health and Performance. She's worked with athletes across the globe, including supporting Olympic (London, 2012), Paralympic (Rio, 2016) and Commonwealth (Queensland, 2018) teams. We want to give listeners a head's up that we will be talking about eating disorders and REDs during this episode. What is REDs (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) The basis of REDs is low energy availability, or insufficient energy in the body to allow for the work that the individual wants to do. Low energy availability comes with a cost to our sport but also is costly to all the biological processes in our body, including the brain, heart, lungs, hormonal, and digestive systems. When low energy availability is combined with under recovery (training and general life stresses can all contribute to this) it throws the body into REDs. Some people can have unintentional or accidental REDs where the person doesn't understand how much energy is required to maintain their biological functions and the training load. On the other hand, intentional REDs is a conscious decision to restrict intake or overtrain and usually involves some aspects of disordered eating and/or exercise dependency. Humans' unique ability to communicate through complex systems of language is one of the key attributes that separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom. But how did this complex behaviour arise? In her latest book, The Origin of Language – How We Learned to Speak and Why, evolutionary biologist Madeleine Beekman argues that our ability to speak arose due to the need to take care of our children. She tells us how early human's anatomy changed dramatically when our ancestors came down from the tress and began walking on two legs, how a quirk of genetics allowed humans to develop such large brains that aided the development of language, and why human's slow development from helpless infants to functioning members of society gave rise to the need for in-group cooperation and complex modes of communication. For thousands of years humans have looked out into the night sky and pondered on the mysteries of the vast cosmos that we find ourselves part of. From Copernicus' discovery that the Earth revolves around the Sun to Einstein's revelation that gravity is the result of the curvature of spacetime, we've learned much about how the universe operates. But we're still only scratching the surface. In this episode, we speak to Marcus Chown, an award-winning science writer and broadcaster and long-time contributor to BBC Science Focus. He explains why pinning down the nature of dark matter and dark energy has eluded us for so long, why we can't get gravity to agree with the three other forces of nature, and discusses the possibility of the existence of multiple universes. This week, we're diving into the wellness headlines that got us talking, from new research linking sweeteners to early puberty, to what the science really says about the keto diet. We're also looking at the rise of broccoli shots in elite sport and why grip strength might be one of the most important health markers we rarely talk about. There's a lot to cover, including Donald Trump and Coca-Cola's, a viral debate around bacon and cancer risk, and a listener question on how food can support hormone health. At the end of the show, we're sharing a few personal updates, including the launch of Ella's new cookbook Quick Wins, our first-ever homeware collection with John Lewis, a campaign to improve free school breakfasts, and some summer picks for kids' food and theatre deals. If most of us were asked what we thought was meant by the word ‘technology' chances are the first thing that would come to mind are inventions such as cars, medicine and computers. But economist and author David McWilliams would argue these are all physical technologies and that there's also a whole world of social technologies out there that have shaped human progress in a similarly profound way that most of us are largely unaware of. Chief amongst these, he says, is the invention of money. In this episode, we speak to David about his latest book Money – A Story of Humanity. He tells us how the very reason that money has any value at all is based on our collective belief and trust in it as a concept, how money was much more deeply involved in turning points in human history than first meets the eye, and we need to see our relationship with money as an evolutionary process that progresses much like natural selection. Dementia doesn't have to be terrifying. We tend to think of neurocognitive decline as something to be feared and avoided, but as the population ages, more and more of us are being diagnosed with dementia – so it might be helpful to know more about it. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP The sport of professional cycling has everything. Dramatic storylines, heroic champions, tear jerking wins, and more. But, one thing it seems to be lacking is cash. Every year, it seems like teams have to fight harder and harder to get sponsorship to pay their riders. Compared to the likes of soccer and other mainstream sports, budgets in cycling are a drop in the ocean. I wanted to find out how professional cycling is able to keep rolling despite the financial struggles, and see if there's anything teams can do to increase their revenue and grow the sport as a whole, so I spoke to some key stakeholders in the sport to find out more. In this special edition of Life In The Peloton, I speak to my first team boss and manager of Team Picnic Post NL, Iwan Spekenbrink, General Race Director of Flander's Classics, Scott Sunderland, current pro seeing out his last season after 17 years as a rider, Simon Clarke, Bas Tietema, owner of TDT Unibet Rockets - the new kids on the block looking to redefine the fan - team relationship through storytelling alongside chasing results, and finally Dr Cillian Kelly; a master statistician with the cold hard facts on the situation to see if it is really as bleak as it seems. Guys, this episode is a deep dive into the sport we all love to find out if it has a future that's financially sustainable, or if teams are always going to be scratching around for sponsorship or closing altogether. Thanks to all my interviewees for speaking to me, and the wider Life In The Peloton team for helping pull this mammoth episode together. I hope you enjoy it! Cheers! Every day we all breathe in thousands of litres of air, it is, of course essential for our continued existence. But did you know that the air that surrounds us is filled with a thriving colony of life itself? This is known as the aerobiome – a population of thousands of species of bacteria, fungi and even potentially lethal viruses such as SARS-CoV-2. In this episode, we speak to science journalist and author Carl Zimmer about his latest book Air-Borne – The Hidden History of the Life We Breathe. Mike also opens up about life beyond the Games: the struggle to find the right coach, the decision to step away from elite racing, and the emotional toll of a cancer diagnosis. Wrapping up, he shares his reflections on the U.S. collegiate running environment and what it's taught him about athlete development and culture. In this episode of Trail Runner Nation, cognitive neuroscientist and endurance athlete Dr. Scott Frey reveals how brain training can unlock new levels of performance for trail and ultrarunners. He explains that while most athletes focus on the physical, it's often the brain that sets the limits—through perceived effort, cognitive fatigue, and pain signals. Dr. Frey introduces his Brain Endurance System Training (BEST), a method that combines cognitive and physical training to build mental strength and resilience. We talk about managing cognitive load, how the brain predicts fatigue, and why a mental taper can be just as important as a physical one. Listeners will learn how to train smarter, race longer, and enjoy the sport deeper by understanding the true power of the brain. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP It's July, which means we're just days away from the Tour de France. I don't know about you, but I am absolutely frothing for this year's race to kick off. My heart is racing just thinking about it…and that's exactly what this month's episode is all about; my heart. Guys, this month's episode of Life In The Peloton is one for all you training geeks out there. It's time for me to take another look ‘under the hood' and get my ticker checked out, so I headed back to the lab for a catch up with my old mate Dr. Andre Le Gerche. If you don't recognise that name, Andre is one of the world's leading experts in Sports Cardiology, whose research and clinical work focuses on the effect of exercise on the human heart. Since the start of my professional cycling career all those years ago, I've been seeing Andre every few years to take part in a study he's conducting on elite athletes' hearts, heart function, and heart health. I last recorded with Andre back in 2022, so if you haven't heard that ep get across and bring yourself up to speed on the study, and what my last round of testing showed just after I retired from Pro Cycling. If you don't know, the UCI makes sure that every pro rider undergoes a series of heart tests on their heart every off season ‘with an aim to reduce - as far as possible - the risk of sudden cardiac death during sporting activity' - scary stuff, right? Andre's study goes one further, looking to understand the longer term effects of a life of endurance sport. I won't lie, guys, this is a big topic - and I won't pretend I'm an expert on Sports Cardiology! But, what I really love about working with Andre and his team is the way they explain the results of their findings to nuffies like me. I hope you like this episode, guys - hopefully, you get a better idea of what goes on under the hood of these elite athletes you're about to watch rip around France for the next month. My next round of testing with Andre isn't until 2030, now, so I'll see you in 5 years, Andre! Cheers! Mitch ----more---- If you didn't catch it, Andre and I first sat down about a couple of years ago to chat all things athlete's heart — what years of racing does to it, how it recovers (or doesn't) after retirement, and why some ex-pros might need to “de-train” their hearts. That ep lays the groundwork for this follow-up, so if you're keen to hear how it all started, you can check it out here.
