A former University of Arizona track and cross country runner turned competitive ultrarunner, Zach brings a unique perspective to the 250-mile distance, drawing on experience from UTMB's CCC and golden ticket races that set him apart from much of the field. In this episode, Zach breaks down the full arc of his race: the unexpected mental fog of running in a lead pack, a costly navigation blunder through the Fain Ranch section, a "hero dose" creatine experiment that left him feeling like he was having an out-of-body experience, and a deeply emotional low on the climb to Schnebly Hill that had him questioning everything — followed by one of his strongest sections of the race. He also reflects on sleep strategy (or lack thereof), the difference between giving up and quitting, and what it means to voluntarily choose suffering in a sport where so many face it without a choice. We also get his inside look at how Cody Poskin, Joe McConaughy, and Courtney Dauwalter race these things, a quick breakdown of his training approach and what he'd do differently, and why he'd come back and do it all over again.Plus: basketball at mile 107, OpenFuel's mission to reduce plastic waste in the sport, and the manifesting of future MBA podiums.
1KG was a one hit wonder, Colt is going to state, and Rachel and Courtney are serious badasses. This episode is just a fun one, as usual. Kara gives a masterclass on parenting a young athlete while trying to stay calm during Colt's push for a state qualifying time in the 2-mile. He gets it with a massive PR. Kara and Des break down the impressive action from Cocodona 250 where Rachel Entrekin WON the whole damn thing in a course-record time. Meanwhile, Courtney Dauwalter conquers the 200+ mile distance for the first time to earn 2nd female and 6th overall. Is there anything she can't do?! Abby Steiner is suing Puma over "defective shoes?" What does that mean? Are super shoes even safe?!? Who needs a cuddle from their dog? And, who needs a little Ketone for recovery? Grab a blanket, your favorite pet, and cuddle up for another great episode! Day 2 brought major movement, with both leaderboards still wide open.On the men's side, Jeff Garmire made a huge climb into contention, while attrition hit key names like Adam Kimball. Joe McConaughey's bold sleep strategy is starting to pay off, and Zach Hauer continues to look steady and strong. On the women's side, Rachel Entrekin leads by over 10 miles after a blistering first 100 miles, but fatigue is creeping in. Courtney Dauwalter and Heather Jackson remain within striking distance.Injuries and DNFs are shaping the race, and sleep strategy is emerging as a key variable. With cold overnight conditions ahead, a shakeup feels inevitable.Bottom line: The race is far from decided—expect big moves overnight.
She won Western States, Hardrock, and UTMB — sometimes back to back to back in the same summer. She came to Cocodona 250 last year, led the entire field through 108 miles, and stopped at Mingus Mountain. She ran a 2:38 road marathon in the fall because she wanted to feel like a beginner at something. She is back.In this episode of Flagstaff Bound 2026, Kevin and Peter sit down with Courtney Dauwalter for a conversation about what this distance actually requires from her — patience, adventure, and progress that looks different depending on which part of the roller coaster you're on. Courtney talks about what a full reset after UTMB actually looked like, why rediscovering the road marathon reignited something she didn't know needed reigniting, and how she thinks about racing something this long when every decision you make on day one compounds across day two, night two, and day three. She also asked if there were NBA jerseys at the Mingus Basketball Association. There are. She is extremely ready. Her chalkboard message at Mingus Mountain is a letter to herself: dear Courtney, this is not your finish line. Love Courtney. Her prediction for Cocodona 2026 is that at least 1,500 pickles will be consumed across all race distances. She needs Jamil and the team to count.Cocodona 250 kicks off Monday, May 4th at 5 AM Pacific. Follow the action live on the Mountain Outpost YouTube channel.

Ryan opens up about his journey from bartending in Indianapolis and living out of his car while exploring the American West… to becoming one of the key creative voices behind Freetrail and modern trail running media. The conversation dives deep into curiosity, creativity, and learning to say yes to opportunity before you feel ready. Ryan shares stories about discovering trail running through Born to Run and Eat and Run, volunteering at Cascade Crest 100 Mile Endurance Run, and eventually building a life around storytelling, mountains, music, and community. The two also unpack Ryan's unique approach to ultrarunning—especially his love for “step-for-step” adventures with friends at races like the Swiss Alps 100 and upcoming adventures filming Courtney Dauwalter at Cocodona 250 and running the Mammoth. But the heart of this episode centers around a bigger topic: the fragility of life. Courtney Dauwalter returns to the Singletrack Podcast ahead of her second attempt at Cocodona 250, the race she started last year and didn't finish, to talk through everything that has happened in between. We open with the Tenerife cancellation and the scramble to pivot to Chianti, including the late surge that won the race and why she credits road marathon training for giving her a new gear she didn't know she had. From there we get into her first real reset in her ultra career, what went wrong at mile 108 at last year's Cocodona, and the one problem she's most excited to solve across day two, night two, and day three of this year's race.We close on her five year Salomon contract extension, what a post-racing chapter actually looks like to her, and what's on the bucket list beyond the three classics (Western States, Hardrock, and UTMB) she's built her career around.Partners:Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next orderNorda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever madeRaide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains Janji - premium trail running apparelMomentous - use code SINGLETRACK for up to 35% off your first order Kodiak Cakes - my favorite oatmeal and pancakes Support the show

We put on our spacesuits for this great episode! The main topic was a study finding that just putting a dissolvable carb strip on the tongue could improve performance by 3% in a short time trial. What?! How can carb strips and mouth rinses improve performance? We discuss the weird implications of cephalic-phase responses. And this one was full of amazing topics! Other topics: our first movie theater trip in 3.5 years, a discussion of low energy availability and fueling for performance, Keely Hodgkinson discussing gaining power before her recent world championship win, why cross training is the hottest training topic, Courtney Dauwalter doing GOAT things, a strange study on hot underwater biking, plus a Q+A on VO2 max limitations, the many meanings of “talent,” preventing cramps, fueling and menstrual cycle disturbances, inflammation and adaptation, and a hypothetical coaching academy. May your saunas and tubs be even hotter than our astronaut costumes. We love you all! In this episode, Rachel Entrekin returns to the show immediately following her 3rd place finish at Chianti by UTMB and gives a firsthand account of one of the most dramatic finishes of the season. We start with the moment everyone's talking about: Courtney Dauwalter's decisive late-race surge. Rachel walks us through how the race unfolded from the front, what it felt like to be running all day shoulder-to-shoulder, and what made Courtney's final move so shocking even to the athletes in the race. From there, we zoom out to what this performance means for Rachel's trajectory. We discuss the narrative around her being a “200-mile specialist,” the pressure she felt coming into the race, and why this result felt like a long-overdue validation of her ability across distances. We also break down the competitive dynamics at the front of the field, including what makes both Courtney Dauwalter and Ingvild Kaspersen uniquely difficult to race against, and why Chianti stands out as the most competitive - and most enjoyable - race of Rachel's career so far.In the second half, we get into the performance details: fueling breakthroughs (including a surprising shift toward gels), gear choices, and how improved nutrition may be unlocking a new level of speed and durability. We close with a look ahead to Cocodona and what this race might signal about Rachel's ceiling in 2026.Partners:Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next orderNorda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever madeRaide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains Janji - premium trail running apparelSupport the show
In this week's edition of Singletrack News, we break down a massive weekend of racing across Chianti by UTMB, Chuckanut 50K, and Big Alta, highlighted by Golden Tickets awarded at Chianti and a highly anticipated showdown between Courtney Dauwalter and Rachel Entrekin. We discuss the winners, key performances, roll-down implications, and what it all means for the rapidly taking shape Western States field, along with early-season signals from some of the sport's top contenders.Elsewhere, we dig into one of the most interesting new concepts in the sport: the “Trail House”, a Boulder-based initiative aiming to create a pipeline for post-collegiate runners into professional trail running, with built-in support, structure, and storytelling. We also cover: Lotti Brinks accepting a Western States Golden Ticket via roll-down from CCC François D'Haene's 2026 schedule and his decision to center the season around an FKT attempt on the GR20 The “Hardcore Harry's” challenge, a last-person-standing-style event that has athletes running 80+ km on consecutive days A grassroots “Community Traverse” stepping in to support runners after the Northern Traverse disruption A wild FKT story out of North Carolina involving a broken wrist and a finish anyway Previewing the Arizona Monster 300 and what to expect from one of the most extreme races on the calendar And our content picks of the week, including a new long-distance route in the UK and a broader conversation around “right to roam” and trail access.Partners:Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next orderNorda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever madeRaide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains Janji - premium trail running apparelSupport the show

He's written for The New York Times, Outside Magazine, and The Atlantic, and his previous books include Peak Performance and The Practice of Groundedness. His latest book, The Way of Excellence, is great. Brad's writing combines cutting-edge science, ancient wisdom, and stories from world-class performers to help people do their best work without losing themselves in the process. Notes: Never pre-judge a performance. When you're feeling tired, uninspired, or off your game, show up anyway. Remember the Beatles scene—they looked bored and exhausted, but Paul still wrote "Get Back" that day. You don't know what's possible until you get going. Discipline means doing what needs to be done regardless of how you feel. As powerlifter Layne Norton says, we don't need to feel good to get going... We need to get going to give ourselves a chance to feel good. Stop waiting for motivation. Start moving and let the feeling follow. Audit who you're surrounding yourself with. The Air Force study is striking: the least fit person in your squadron determines everyone else's fitness level. If you sit within 25 feet of a high performer at work, your performance improves 15%. Within 25 feet of a low performer? It declines 30%. Your environment isn't neutral... Choose wisely. Treat curiosity like a muscle. It's a reward-based behavior that gets stronger with use. When Kobe said he played "to figure things out," he was tapping into the neural circuitry that makes learning feel good and builds upon itself. Ask more questions. Stay curious about your craft. Excellence isn't about perfection or optimization... It's about mastery and mattering. It's about showing up consistently, surrounding yourself wisely, and staying curious along the way. To the late Robert Pirsig - one of the greatest blessings and joys and sources of satisfaction in my life is to be in conversation with your work. He's the author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance— "gumption is the psychic gasoline that keeps the whole thing going." Arrogant people are loud. Confident people are quiet. Confidence requires evidence. The neural circuitry associated with curiosity is like a muscle: it gets stronger with use. Curiosity is what neuroscientists call a reward-based behavior. It feels good, motivates us to keep going, and builds upon itself. Kobe didn't play to win. He played to learn and grow. Kobe Bryant said he didn't play not to lose, and he didn't even play to win. He played to learn and to grow. He said the reason he did that is because it's so much more freeing. If you're really trying not to lose, you're going to be tight. If you're really trying to win, you're going to be tight. But if you're just out there to grow, you're going to be in the moment. When you're in the moment, you give yourself the best chance of having the performance you want. The word compete comes from the Latin root word com, which means together, and petere, which means to seek, rise up, or strive. In its most genuine form, competition is about rising together (Caitlin Clark's story against LSU). Love: The Detroit Lions had just won their first playoff game in 32 years. Following the game was a scene of pure jubilation. During a short break from the celebrating, the head coach, GM, and quarterback all gave brief speeches. Which collectively lasted about 2 minutes. During those 2 minutes, the word LOVE was repeated 7 times. Homeostatic regulation -- Sense it in the greatness of others and when you're at your best. What Brad calls "excellence." Surround yourself with people who have high standards. When things don't go your way, when you're inevitably heartbroken or frustrated, it's the people around you, the books you read, the art around you, the music you listen to, that's the stuff that speaks to you and keeps you going. It keeps you on the path even amidst the heartbreak. Process goals work better than outcome goals for most people. If you're an amateur, you should be process-focused. When I train for powerlifting, I don't think about the meet that I'm training for. I think about showing up for the session today. If I think about the meeting, I get anxious, and my performance goes down. But if you're Steph Curry and you've been doing your thing for 20 years, you can think about winning the gold medal because your process is so automatic. For 99% of people, focus on the process. "Brave New World" turns fear into curiosity. When you walk up to a bar loaded with more weight than you've ever touched, there can be fear about what it's going to feel like. If you go up to the bar with fear, you're going to miss the lift. If you're convinced you're going to make it, you'll make it, but your nervous system knows when you're lying to yourself. The middle ground is curiosity. Instead of saying "that's heavy, it's scary," I say "Brave New World. I've never touched this weight before. I have no idea what's going to happen, but let's find out." It splits the difference. I'm hyped, I'm giving myself a chance, I'm not lying to myself, but I'm also not scared. Curiosity and fear cannot exist at the same time in the brain. There are seven pathways in the brain defined by affective neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp. Two of those pathways are the rage/fear pathway and the seeking/curiosity pathway. These pathways cannot be turned on at the same time. They compete for resources. It's a zero sum game. You cannot simultaneously be raging and curious. You cannot be terrified and curious at the same time. If you get into a mindset of curiosity, it's extremely hard to be angry or terrified. By being curious, we turn off the fear deep in our brains and give ourselves a chance to perform our best. Practice curiosity in lower-consequence situations first. Curiosity is like a muscle. If you're about to do something absolutely terrifying and you're really scared and you say, "I'm just going to be curious," you know you're lying to yourself. You have to practice in lower-consequence situations first. When you, as a paren,t get really upset with your kid, try to be curious about their experience. Watch your anger calm down. When you as a leader, have a board presentation where you're feeling anxious, try to have that mindset of "Brave New World." When you're an athlete going into a big game obsessing about what could go wrong, try to be really curious instead. The best competitors have emotional flexibility. As a competitor, you would know that in the confines of the game, you're not singing Kumbaya, you are trying to kill them. Then you have the emotional flexibility the minute that game ends to respect them as a person. That is the best way to compete. That's when our best performances happen. It's not either/or, it's both/and. It's playing really hard, giving everything you can for the win, seizing on your opponent's vulnerability, at the same time as having deep respect for them. You don't have to be miserable to be excellent. There are people like David Goggins or Michael Jordan who seem motivated by anger and a chip on their shoulder. But Jordan would put his tongue out like this primal expression of joy when he was about to dunk. And Jordan won all his championships while being coached by Phil Jackson, the Zen master of compassion. There are the Steph Currys of the world, or Courtney Dauwalter (best ultra marathoner to ever exist), or Albert Einstein (total mystic who had so much fun in his work). There are two ways to the top of the mountain. For 99.999% of people, you end up performing better with fun and joy, and you have so much more satisfaction, which contributes to longevity. The best leaders take work seriously but laugh at themselves. The best leaders I know in the corporate world, they take the work so seriously. They are so intense. But my God, do they laugh at themselves and their colleagues and have fun. Reflection Questions Brad says, "The things that break your heart are the things that fill your life with meaning." What are you currently holding back from caring deeply about because you're afraid of getting hurt? What would it look like to step fully into that arena despite the risk of heartbreak? The Air Force study showed that sitting within 25 feet of a low performer decreases your performance by 30%. Honestly assess who you're spending the most time with right now. Are they raising your standards or lowering them? What specific change could you make this month to shift your environment? Brad uses "Brave New World" to turn fear into curiosity before big challenges. Think of something coming up that makes you anxious. Instead of trying to convince yourself you'll succeed or dwelling on the fear, what does it feel like to approach it with pure curiosity: "I've never done this before. Let's find out what happens."
We had one of the most fun sports-watching weekends of our lives before this great episode! The main science topic was a new study on Kilian Jornet at Western States, breaking down his fueling, the metabolic demand, and lots more. Kilian is also the 2nd author on the paper! We've said it before and we'll say it again: In a world of external monitors, be the rectal thermometer. We also talked about the amazing saga of USA Skimo's Olympic qualification, featuring trail runners Anna Gibson and Cam Smith. We loved recording this episode! The main topic was the article that rocked the athletic world last week, which asserted that many protein powders had unsafe amounts of lead contamination. We broke down the numbers to reach a much more nuanced conclusion that should help you feel better about it all. And that led to a broader discussion on the perils of advocacy being presented as science. We also talked about a shocking study on 45 asymptomatic people, which found labrum defects in 69% of hips! MRIs are complicated, unveiling mysteries of the human body and the strange line between structural and inflammatory issues. We discuss what it all means! And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: recovery cake, Megan's beastly bike workout, our attempt to program AI with 22 sexy concepts in athletics, a study on actual v. planned carb intake in races, Courtney Dauwalter doing another marathon, a hypothetical about Cole Hocker in ultras, breaking up moderate running with sub-threshold intervals, how grief impacts training, energy deficits in multi-day events, preparing for heat, period parties, and when to FAFO.We love you all! Happy World Statistics Day! In this episode, we kick things off with a celebration of stats before sharing how a nor'easter completely washed out some big birthday plans. After a necessary rant about a brutal week for Philadelphia sports, we break down the impressive new women's only track event, Athlos, and its massive, instantly paid prize purse. In other wild business news, find out which nostalgic tech company just bought the Fyre Fest brand and what their bizarre Web3 plans might be. The conversation then gets strange as we explore the shared dream phenomenon of "Mall World" and its endless, creepy public bathrooms, which leads to a PSA about a real life rest stop. We also demystify that scary feeling you get when a plane takes off, explain the controversial new AI video app "Sora," and ponder a new robot chef that might not be as helpful as it seems. Plus, we've got stories on ultrarunner Courtney Dauwalter's marathon debut, the genius invention of Cheeto proof pants, a potential new segment called "Dan Says," and a confirmation of why apple picking is, and always will be, a scam. We wrap the episode on a high note with an amazing story about a five year old sprinter who gets the hero's treatment every day after school.

I also got the impression from our chat that she's incredibly humble and I suspect that description may not sit comfortably with her — but it's the truth.A 2x winner of one of the world's most famous and revered races, the Western States Endurance Run 100 (that's 100mi/160km).In 2012, she also smashed the course record — a record that stood for 11 years and was only broken in 2023 by Courtney Dauwalter! She's also a 2x winner of the World 100km Championship and in 2014 she also won the Comrades Marathon, an 89km race in South Africa, regarded as the world's oldest and largest ultramarathon. While we touch on those races in this conversation, we spend much of our time behind-the-scenes, with Ellie sharing:- how her athletic identity changed from someone who ran for fun to that of a ‘semi-professional' and potential winner,- how you don't need to have the ‘perfect race' to achieve the best result you can,- her struggle with injuries and her advice on how to get your running ‘fix' when you're injured and how to remain optimistic when you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel,- how it took her 2nd win at the Western States 100 for her to finally call herself a 100-mile runner, and- whether she secretly crosses her fingers and hopes that no-one breaks her record at the Western States 100 each year.

Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes! In this clip from the latest edition of the Long Run Archives on the Singletrack Podcast, Finn Melanson, Brett Hornig, and Jeff Colt discuss a fascinating hypothetical scenario: If you were starting a brand-new ultrarunning company (whether shoes, gear, nutrition, or anything else), and every athlete in the market was a free agent, which four would you prioritize adding to your team, and why? The trio explores the spectrum from pure performance athletes to influential figures—and the hybrids who bridge both worlds—as they build their dream rosters featuring familiar names such as Courtney Dauwalter, Katie Schide, Lucy Bartholomew, Jamil Coury, and Billy Yang. Circle of Hell Run (COHR), Chef Boyardee, and Sweat Salt Wisdom with Bryce BrooksI'm joined by the undisputed king of dry-heat suffering, Bryce Brooks. He's now a three-time champion of the infamous Circle of Hell Run—a 3-hour looped sufferfest in Phoenix held during the hottest part of the hottest day of the year. We dig into exactly how to win a heat race with 200 pounds of ice, salt pills by the fistful, and ice bandana swaps that would make an F1 pit crew jealous.Follow Bryce on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/b_ricebrooksWe also dive deep into Bryce's work behind the scenes at Aravaipa, his thoughts on live-streaming gimmicks vs performance, creative pacer rules, and what's next for the ever-expanding race organization. From blacked-out cars with no AC to ravioli-fueled recoveries, this one is part heat survival guide, part comedy, part ode to the ultrarunning grind. My favorite story is the time met Jamil Coury and Courtney Dauwalter at Cocodona 250! Buckle up. It's a dry heat, but the content is fire.Presented by Janji https://janji.com/Garage Grown Gear https://www.garagegrowngear.com/CS Coffee https://www.csinstant.coffee/Chapters00:00 Introduction to the Circle of Hell Run03:07 Winning Strategies and Crew Dynamics06:04 Race Strategy and Managing Heat08:59 Nutrition and Hydration in Extreme Conditions11:54 The Atmosphere and Community of the Race15:05 Personal Reflections and Future Aspirations24:05 Racing and Content Creation Challenges26:55 Capturing the Highlights of Ultra Races31:02 The Role of Gimmicks in Racing35:44 Jamil's Unique Approach to Racing and Content38:59 Aerovipa's Growth and Event Expansion42:26 Underrated Events and the Crown King Scramble44:41 The Rise of Cocodona and Its Popularity45:20 Cocodona's Rich History and Diverse Biomes46:20 Evolution of the Live Stream Experience47:23 First Encounters and Memorable Moments47:57 The Wild Ride of the First Year48:44 Hitchhiking Adventures and Unexpected Encounters51:31 Post-Race Reflections and Decisions54:54 Transitioning to a New Career Path57:03 Upcoming Races and Future Plans58:48 Crew Dynamics and Race Strategies01:00:39 Debating Pacer Policies in Ultra RacesSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside
