Send Us Your Questions/CommentsA split second can change how you see everything, and Luke 9 gives us one of those moments. Jesus goes up a mountain to pray with Peter, James, and John, and while He's praying, His face and clothing blaze with a kind of radiant glory the disciples cannot manufacture or explain. Then Moses and Elijah appear and start talking with Him, not about comfort or success, but about His coming “departure” at Jerusalem. Even in glory, the cross stays central. We take time to read the passage closely and connect the dots Luke expects you to notice: why the Transfiguration comes right after Peter's confession that Jesus is the Christ, why “about eight days” is not a contradiction with the other Gospels, and why the Bible keeps linking mountains, prayer, and revelation. We also dig into the meaning of Moses and Elijah showing up as the Law and the Prophets, and why the word “departure” can carry the weight of “exodus,” pointing to Jesus as the true deliverer from sin. Then comes the line that lands on all of us: the Father speaks from the cloud and says, “This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him.” We talk honestly about how easy it is to be half-awake spiritually, how quickly we can chase the mountaintop feeling, and why Luke immediately brings us down the mountain into the crowd where real ministry happens. If you want a deeper, clearer view of Jesus and a more grounded picture of Christian discipleship, press play. Matthew 17:1-8. Rev. Pete Jones preaching.
Register your feedback here. Always good to hear from you!Climbing can be exhilarating. It can also be daunting, and even dangerous. We'll deal with both extremes this week – the experiences that draw us closer to God spiritually if not physically; the alternative “highs” that may interfere with bigger purposes; the mountains God moves for us, as opposed to the ones He asks us to climb; and the annoyances that come with building a stack of game pieces that reach all the way to heaven.Check out Hal on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@halhammons9705Hal Hammons serves as preacher and shepherd for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. “If you have opportunities to have them take over the work, you can engage them in a way with chaos circles. I love doing chaos circles when they're teaching themselves the music. Sometimes you see students who are usually very shy really step up to the challenge of becoming leaders, You get to see students in a way that they don't always present themselves if you can get them moving around and engaging the brain that way.”Dr. Jenny Bent is Professor of Music and Director of Choral and Vocal Activities at Sonoma State University. Pastor Jim explores Elijah's journey in 1 Kings 19, where despair follows his mountaintop victory. After Jezebel's threats, Elijah runs away feeling hopeless and alone. Yet God meets him in his weakness, providing food, rest, and eventually speaking not through dramatic signs but through a gentle whisper. Jim reflects on how God works both through and in us, even in our wandering and despair. He reminds listeners that the Christian life isn't just mountaintop experiences but also seasons of silence where God continues His faithful work.

Pastor Eric Silberschmidt UNITY Lutheran Church Brookfield, WI
A Sermon by Pastors Richard Sfameni, Lead Pastor of Victory Church in Providence, RI. Luke 9: 1-62
When the apostle Peter encounters the transfigured Christ whose “clothes became white as light,” the apostle (somewhat understandably) does the one thing he should not do…he speaks (Matt 17:4). Before he can fully explain why he wants to create three tent or hut like structures, the heavenly Father graciously interrupts the apostle’s meandering daydream. Matthew reports: “He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him (Matt 17:5).” In this brief rebuke, the Father reveals that the proper and best human response to divine glory consists not of human ingenuity but of human listening. Pastor and author Peter Witkowski stopped by to remind us that in order to make the most of our experiences of spiritual euphoria, we must not first speak but listen. https://witkowskiblog.com/2024/04/21/dont-speak-listen-instructions-on-how-to-navigate-our-spiritual-highs/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Homily for the Transfiguration of the Lord - August 6, 2023
First of all, this sermon was preached on a Sunday without electricity. A bad storm came through on the previous Thursday night, so we were without power. The recording is not the greatest audio quality because it was recorded on an iPhone and then we attempted to reduce the background noise (from the giant fan we had going).Anyways, this sermon was a bit shorter due to the heat in the room. The focus is meeting God on the Mountain, specifically the mountain top experiences that we have with God. We talk about the experience, the perspective of worship and our attitude when we return home. We also discuss the potential for mountaintop experiences at home, or when you least expect it.
A mountain is where heaven and earth come closest together. Mountain top experiences mark the lives of biblical characters like Moses, Elijah, Jesus, and the 12 disciples. It was in those mountain top experiences where those characters had awakenings that opened their eyes to God's presence and power in their ordinary lives. What is Jesus has already opened our eyes to God's presence and power in our ordinary life? What if all we need to do is pay attention because eternity is already in session? Matthew 17:1-8 (ESV)After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don't be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

Today on the Daily Nugget, Mike talks about the power of a good retreat. In the Old Testament and in the New Testament God would take His people, especially His leaders, up to the mountain and show them His greatness. It gave them the courage they needed to do His work! We need them today. Join the Legacy South Sound Men's retreat on April 28-30. Come and get renewed! https://www.ourtruelegacy.com/mensweekend
Today's gospel recounts the Transfiguration on mount Tabor, after which Peter exclaims "Lord, it is good for us to be here." Pastor Lorne explains that Peter, by wanting to build shrines for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah, wants to remain on the mountaintop where things are good and comfortable. God has other ideas for the disciples (both then and now) and says "This is my son... listen to him." And Jesus says "Do not be afraid."
