Pastor Jim explores Elijah's journey in 1 Kings 19, where despair follows his mountaintop victory. After Jezebel's threats, Elijah runs away feeling hopeless and alone. Yet God meets him in his weakness, providing food, rest, and eventually speaking not through dramatic signs but through a gentle whisper. Jim reflects on how God works both through and in us, even in our wandering and despair. He reminds listeners that the Christian life isn't just mountaintop experiences but also seasons of silence where God continues His faithful work.

A new MP3 sermon from Centerpointe Baptist Church Huntersville is now available on SermonAudio with the following details: Title: Mountain Top Experiences: When Holiness Meets Grace Subtitle: Hebrews Speaker: Heston Blake Broadcaster: Centerpointe Baptist Church Huntersville Event: Sunday Service Date: 7/21/2024 Bible: Hebrews 12:18-29 Length: 47 min.
When the apostle Peter encounters the transfigured Christ whose “clothes became white as light,” the apostle (somewhat understandably) does the one thing he should not do…he speaks (Matt 17:4). Before he can fully explain why he wants to create three tent or hut like structures, the heavenly Father graciously interrupts the apostle’s meandering daydream. Matthew reports: “He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him (Matt 17:5).” In this brief rebuke, the Father reveals that the proper and best human response to divine glory consists not of human ingenuity but of human listening. Pastor and author Peter Witkowski stopped by to remind us that in order to make the most of our experiences of spiritual euphoria, we must not first speak but listen. https://witkowskiblog.com/2024/04/21/dont-speak-listen-instructions-on-how-to-navigate-our-spiritual-highs/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Returning from sabbatical, Fr. Tim reminds us we need to look for sacramental beauty in the ordinary moments of life, not only in the spiritual mountaintop experiences.

Homily for the Transfiguration of the Lord - August 6, 2023
First of all, this sermon was preached on a Sunday without electricity. A bad storm came through on the previous Thursday night, so we were without power. The recording is not the greatest audio quality because it was recorded on an iPhone and then we attempted to reduce the background noise (from the giant fan we had going).Anyways, this sermon was a bit shorter due to the heat in the room. The focus is meeting God on the Mountain, specifically the mountain top experiences that we have with God. We talk about the experience, the perspective of worship and our attitude when we return home. We also discuss the potential for mountaintop experiences at home, or when you least expect it.
A mountain is where heaven and earth come closest together. Mountain top experiences mark the lives of biblical characters like Moses, Elijah, Jesus, and the 12 disciples. It was in those mountain top experiences where those characters had awakenings that opened their eyes to God's presence and power in their ordinary lives. What is Jesus has already opened our eyes to God's presence and power in our ordinary life? What if all we need to do is pay attention because eternity is already in session? Matthew 17:1-8 (ESV)After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don't be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

Today on the Daily Nugget, Mike talks about the power of a good retreat. In the Old Testament and in the New Testament God would take His people, especially His leaders, up to the mountain and show them His greatness. It gave them the courage they needed to do His work! We need them today. Join the Legacy South Sound Men's retreat on April 28-30. Come and get renewed! https://www.ourtruelegacy.com/mensweekend
Today's gospel recounts the Transfiguration on mount Tabor, after which Peter exclaims "Lord, it is good for us to be here." Pastor Lorne explains that Peter, by wanting to build shrines for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah, wants to remain on the mountaintop where things are good and comfortable. God has other ideas for the disciples (both then and now) and says "This is my son... listen to him." And Jesus says "Do not be afraid."

Mountaintop Experiences
The important thing about mountaintop experiences is to remember that there is always a valley on the other side! And oftentimes you find that when you get to the top.... there is another taller peak ahead! This is the truly delicious - though difficult - thing about personal and professional growth. YOU are a long-term investment, and YOU are worth the work and the effort.Do not regret the callouses and skinned knees you will earn along the way -- those harder lessons - the moments of failure, err, and defeat - they are not only some of our best teachers, but they are the sandpaper that smoothes out our rough edges. They help us learn to give some grace to ourselves and others. They nurture our ability to be humble, to be empathetic, supportive, and more encouraging to ourselves and others.Keep climbing, friends! I believe in YOU!

Are you happy on the mountaintop AND in the valley? In this message, Tiffany Nunnally shares how to live in contentment in every circumstance. The key to contentment in life is loving where you live, not longing for what you lack. This doesn't mean you don't feel hope and excitement for the future, but while you're planning for the future, appreciate the present. Valleys: Typical view of valleys: low places to endure with help from the Lord, sometimes scary, just waiting until it's time to move out of it back to a mountaintop experience. God's view of valleys: They are places of favor, abiding, dwelling, rest, harvest, growth, community and protection. Focus on tending to your own grass so you don't even notice neighbor's! “Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. Don't get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.” Proverbs 4:25-27 Mountains: Typical view of Mountaintops: High places with a exhilarating peak experience – easy fun places where we feel powerful and we want to stay there. God's view of Mountains: An occasional journey for a purpose, that always requires sacrifice and has to be taken seriously. Valleys vs. Mountains: Life will always be a combination of valleys and mountains. Don't confuse safety with being stagnant and don't confuse contentment with complacency. Keys to contentment:God's desire for us is to dwell in contentment in the valley and gain perspective on the mountain. 1. Let the Lord be your source. “Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. 12 I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. 13 For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:11-13 “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “I will never leave you or abandon you.” Hebrews 13:5 2. Thankfulness. “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18You can't feel thankful & complain at the same time. 3. Perspective. “So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever” 2 Cor. 4:18Your perspective comes from your position. If you're seated in the heavenlies with Jesus (Ephesians 2:6) you can see things the way God does. 4. Trust.“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock.” Isaiah 26:3-4 “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to his purpose for them.” Romans 8:28 Are you content on the mountain AND in the valley?
