In this class, I talk about why “the market is never wrong.” I use Shaquille O'Neal as an example, explaining why he might feel frustrated seeing players like Rudy Gobert make more money today, even though Shaq was a much better player. But here's the thing: the market decides what people get paid, not skill alone. It might seem unfair, but the market always knows what's right. Let me break it down for you. The House of Mourning: Embodied Wisdom from Grief, Loss and Trauma
In this episode, Mary Catherine McDonald (MC) discusses her experience with grief and loss, as well as her research on trauma. She highlights the grief-phobic nature of society and the need for more open conversations about loss. MC reframes the concept of trauma, emphasizing that the trauma response is never wrong and that shame is the real problem. She also explores the importance of relational support in healing from trauma and grief. The conversation delves into the challenges of navigating identity after a traumatic event and the need for society to acknowledge and support those who have experienced loss. Takeaways from this episode: Society is often grief-phobic, making it difficult for individuals to openly discuss and process their grief. The trauma response is an adaptive mechanism that is designed to respond to extreme overwhelm and keep us alive. Shame is the real problem when it comes to trauma and grief, as it prevents individuals from seeking help and healing. Relational support is crucial in the healing process, and healing can happen in various relationships and settings. Trauma and grief can lead to a loss of identity, and individuals may need to reorient themselves and redraw their map of the world. It is important to challenge societal narratives around trauma and grief, and to recognize that healing is a unique and individual process. You probably remember how it went when you were a kid: If your family was typical, your mother said, “Don't fight,” but your father said, “Don't lose.” And that was the end of it. With all due respect to Mom and Dad, this advice is little help in a hypercomplex world that's teetering on the edge of social and ecological collapse. Conflict is now inevitable, but rarely do we teach it in any intentional way. A sense of martial artistry is essential to our survival. Gripped by confusion, fear, and outrage, we feel the need to act, but we don't even know the fundamentals: what to fight, who to fight, when to fight, how to fight, or why to fight. Awkward and impulsive, we're ineffective and a threat to ourselves and others. This is a book about radical realism and adaptability. It's about understanding the world, thinking clearly, navigating complexity, and exercising skill in the face of escalating stress and ambiguity. If you're an aspiring activist with an interest in making a difference, this book, The Enemy is Never Wrong: Martial Art, Activism, and the Fight for a Functional Futureis for you.

Dr. Jeanette welcomes Frank Forencich, author of The Enemy is Never Wrong, to share his insight on stress, energy, and the world around us.What is the resistance we are feeling; is it pressure, external sources, our own anxiety, and stress factors, and where is the energy coming from? Is it outside us and coming to us or is it inside and we don't know where it is coming from? What is stress all about? How are we feeling coming at us, coming out of us, or popping up inside of us?There is always stress in the human experience but where does it source and how can we see it for what it is trying to tell us? Is stress the energy force that is created as we look through the filters that we have owned as what we call our life?Do animals feel stress and we call it the survival mode of an animal? Is stress not an illusion appearing real in life for humans? Can you exist in being along or do we always have to engage with others and be at the mercy of all kinds of emotions, truths, and beliefs? What is adaptation in health, nature, society, and the universal law? The mental well-being of men has received some more attention of late—but not in a good way. Brace yourself as we share some painful truths about the stigma surrounding male mental health… And discuss the way back to true well-being. This week On This Walk, my walking partner is Tim Perreira who shares his personal journey with mental health. After hitting a plateau in his life and being fired during the pandemic, he faced depression, weight gain, and a serious reconsideration of what matters. However, these challenges became a turning point for him to prioritize his well-being. We delve into men's challenges when seeking support and the importance of morning routines for productivity and mental health. Please join us as we break the silence on men's mental health and much more! In This Episode (08:22) Tim's shift from external to internal orientation (11:07) Men's pursuit of external peace (13:11) The challenges men face in seeking help for mental health issues (15:16) Transformation and understanding of the human mind (17:26) Depersonalizing mental health (22:23) Reasons why men are not seeking help (26:30) Men's struggle with societal norms (35:48) The benefits of joining a men's group (37:33) The importance of having a supportive community (40:48) Men's reluctance to explore emotional and mental health (41:00) Creation of narratives and limiting beliefs in the mind (42:20) Seeking fulfillment in core human emotions (48:17) Tim's modalities for mental well-being (50:54) Creating a morning routine (59:10) Micro-commitment for meditation (01:03:32) The importance of intention (01:09:47) An advice for those struggling with mental health Notable Quotes “Strength is recognizing that something's off and doing something about it. You know, strength isn't bearing it like that's easy to bury it and to cover it and sweep it under the rug. It is hard to stare at your deepest fears and insecurities in the face and say, I'm going to do something about this, I don't know what it's going to be, I have no idea what I'm doing. Like extremely vulnerable to even step into that world but just to reinforce that, it takes such a massive amount of strength.” – Tim (01:10:35) “External peace has been so much what we've been taught to chase. We're told that this is the image of what it means to make it in the world as you maybe turn towards family and things. This is what it means to be the provider and the protector of that family. And this is what you got to do to prepare yourself for that role. And so we get so oriented and caught up in that external there to flip it and say, actually, no, you've got to build a life from the inside and then bring it out. It literally feels like flipping our whole world upside down.” – Luke (00:11:07) Our Guest Tim Perreira is a former college athlete turned tech sales pro who struggled to find purpose after sports. Despite achieving sales success through job hopping, he felt unfulfilled and realized something was missing. After being fired during the pandemic, Tim decided to pursue his passion for mental health and wellness. He founded PER, a company focused on improving men's health and crushing stigmas. I am honored to celebrate my 100th episode with my special guest MaryCatherine McDonald, PhD. She is the author of the book Unbroken: The Trauma Response is Never Wrong. MC (as she goes by), is a research professor and life coach who has been researching, lecturing, and publishing on the neuroscience, psychology, and lived experience of trauma since beginning her PhD in 2009. For more, visit alchemycoaching.life or follow her on Instagram @mc.phd This episode is like a Trauma 101 of sorts. Through her research MC has come to define trauma as a unbearable emotional experience that lack a relational home. Trauma also has three core parts 1. A narrative event 2. Emotional content 3. A set tags or labels Each part is discussed and we talk about how each part impacts our outlook and how each of these parts can be integrated for healing. We discuss some key components to trauma which include reconstructing the world view that can be shattered as a result of experiencing trauma. Taking our power back from the labels that have been given to us through others or our trauma is critical to healing as well. The role of shame in our trauma and how we manage triggers among other important aspects of trauma are discussed as well. Such a great conversation on trauma with an amazing guest! Frank Forencich is an internationally-recognized leader in health and performance education. He earned his B.A. at Stanford University in human biology and neuroscience and has over 30 years teaching experience in martial art and health education. Frank holds black belt rankings in karate and aikido and has traveled to Africa on several occasions to study human origins and the ancestral environment. The Enemy is Never Wrong: Martial Art, Activism, and the Fight for a Functional Future A sense of martial artistry is essential to our survival. Gripped by confusion, fear and outrage, we feel the need to act, but we don't even know the fundamentals: what to fight, who to fight, when to fight, how to fight, or why to fight. Awkward and impulsive, we're ineffective and a threat to ourselves and others. This is a book about radical realism and adaptability. It's about understanding the world, thinking clearly, navigating complexity, and exercising skill in the face of escalating stress and ambiguity. Website | Amazon | Twitter | Facebook

My guest for this episode is MaryCatherine McDonald, a research professor and life coach who specializes in the psychology and philosophy of trauma. She has been researching, lecturing, and publishing on the neuroscience, psychology, and lived experience of trauma since completing her PhD in 2016. While engaging with trauma academically, MaryCatherine experienced the loss of her parents - a significant event that required her to apply her knowledge and insights regarding trauma to herself. In this interview, we talk about the important ways in which MaryCatherine believes we must re-define trauma and our approach for healing it. I (Josephine) share a bit of my immigration trauma story, and MaryCatherine helps me better understand my own healing process. MaryCatherine's new book, Unbroken: The Trauma Response is Never Wrong has just been published by Sounds True. For centuries, we've been taught that being traumatized means we are somehow broken—and that trauma only happens to people who are too fragile or flawed to deal with hardship. Instead, says Dr. MaryCatherine McDonald, the trauma response proves our spirit cannot be broken. In this podcast, Tami Simon and “MC” (as her students call her) discuss her new book, Unbroken: The Trauma Response Is Never Wrong—And Other Things You Need to Know to Take Back Your Life, and how we might as a society begin to update our understanding of trauma and its healing. Tune in for this inspiring conversation about the impact of trauma on the narratives that make up our identity; recalibrating the nervous system after trauma; memory and the hippocampus; relearning a sense of embodied safety; dealing with loss in our grief-phobic culture; trauma defined as “an unbearable emotional experience that lacks a relational home”; the unconscious nature of triggers, and how to raise awareness around them; the miracle of your adaptive brain and body; trust and community in the healing of trauma; reconciling life's ultimate vulnerability; finding resilience and strength in these uncertain times; attunement, holding space, honesty, and other elements that provide a relational home; realizing an anchor in the “tiny little joys”; the healing power of… Tetris?; healthy regulation; and more.
Halloween feels like it was yesterday, but Lizz is already decking the halls, Kelly is prepping a 3-foot tree for George and Hattie's room, and Tyler the Grinch is no help. Today, the gals take a moment to get ready for Thanksgiving, though. Today's great eight brings you all the Thanksgiving vibes: a cocktail, cheese board, and kitchen gossip; meal prep and the parade; a post-Turkey-Trot donut; pumpkin pie and decaf; Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping; Friday leftovers, letting your Christmas flag fly guilt-free; and an after-meal nap with football in the background. Today's millennial word of the day brings you 'rizz' 2.0 from a Gen Z family friend who has Kelly and Lizz's back. Listen in to see if you know someone who has 'w-rizz' or 'l-rizz.' Habit stacking your morning and nighttime routine is the star of Kelly's driveway dump. No excuses. Get to it. Kelly shares her thoughts on the TSA sock-check — aka you should always be prepared to take your shoes off — and where she's found her new favorite boot socks. The satisfaction of using up and pulling 'empties' and clearing Christmas clutter round out the segment. You don't want to be talking politics with your uncles and aunts this Thanksgiving, so why not talk auto and shake hands after? Today's industry news hits hard, so you can make more than small talk over dinner. Today's industry news is sponsored by Edmunds.com. Kelly loves Edmunds for her car consultations because they make everything easy, user-friendly, and digestible. On every used car listing page, Edmunds gives you an idea of how the car is priced, and they have a fantastic trade appraisal tool where you can get a free appraisal for your vehicle in just minutes. Edmunds has over 50 years of car shopping advice and price guidance all right in one place. The first female crash dummy has arrived, and Astrid Linder shares all about it in her TED Talk. The 2022 LA Auto show is happening, and the gals agree it's time for the 2023 Toyota Prius to be the moment. Also debuting at the show will be the 2024 Subaru Impreza, 2024 Kia Seltos, Vinfast's new EVs, and the Genesis GV 70 electric. By 2035 electric truck stops will need as much power as a small town, and gas stations will need as much as a professional sports stadium. Can we handle it? If you're wondering what you'll do with your Thanksgiving leftovers this year, you won't want to miss today's ditch the drive-through. A listener writes in with their Thanksgiving shepherd's pie, Kelly and Lizz share their favorite sauce for turkey sandwiches, Durkee Famous Sauce, and Kelly shares a generational tradition — turkey tetrazzini. → To share your ditch the drive-through recipe with us, call (959) CAR-POOL and leave us a message! → Want our advice on your next car (or just got a life question for us)?
