Episode No. 672 features curators Kimberly A. Jones and Mary Morton; and curators Sant Khalsa and Juniper Harrower. Along with Sylvie Patry and Anne Robbins, Jones and Morton are the curators of "1874: The Impressionist Moment" at the National Gallery of Art. The exhibition examines the condition of Parisian art in 1874, both official standards exhibited at and effectively promoted via the official salon, and the renegade works exhibited at the first impressionist exhibition. Included are impressionist stalwarts such as Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, and also salon lions such as William Bouguereau and Jean-Léon Gérôme. The smart, delightful catalogue was published by the Musee d'Orsay and the NGA. Amazon and Bookshop offer it for about $46-60. "1874" is on view through January 19, 2025. Khalsa and Harrower are the curators of "Desert Forest: Life with Joshua Trees" at the Lancaster (Calif.) Museum of Art and History. Part of this year's sprawling Getty PST ART initiative, it's on view through December 29. "Desert Forest" examines how artists from Carleton Watkins to Cara Romero to Nancy Baker Cahill have presented Joshua trees and the fragile Mojave Desert ecosystem in their work. A fine catalogue was published by Inlandia Institute. It's available from MOAH. Instagram: Mary Morton, Kimberly Jones, Sant Khalsa, Juniper Harrower, Tyler Green.
Nancy Baker Cahill spent her youth gaining an appreciation for both civic engagement and dark humor. Her creative passions were ignited with a powerful youth arts program, but then went dormant for a difficult spell in adulthood. Now, fully in her stride as a new media artist known for work that examines power, selfhood, and embodied consciousness, her AR artwork can be found covering Time Square, at international festivals, and floating in unexpected, intangible places, worldwide.Images, links and more from Nancy! Please say Hi on social! Nancy Baker Cahill is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist whose hybrid practice focuses on systemic power, consciousness, and the human body. As a new media artist, Cahill creates immersive and interactive experiences, video installations, and conceptual blockchain projects rooted in the practice of drawing. Her monumental augmented reality artworks extend and subvert the lineage of land art, often confronting the climate crisis, social issues, and civics. Nancy's work calls for a more equitable future for all, as realized early on in her career with her collaborative art series “Exit Wounds” in conjunction with the non profit Homeboy Industries led by Father Greg Boyle. https://homeboyindustries.org/Cahill is Founder and Artistic Director of 4th Wall, a free AR public art platform exploring site interventions, resistance, and inclusive creative expression. Her geolocated AR installations have been exhibited globally and have earned her profiles in the New York Times, Frieze Magazine, and The Art Newspaper, and she was also included in ARTnews' list of 2021 'Deciders'. Cahill's work has been exhibited internationally at museums and galleries, and her solo exhibition ‘Slipstream: Table of Contents' was recently acquired by LACMA. In 2021, she was awarded the Williams College Bicentennial Medal of Honor and received the City of Los Angeles' Master Artist Fellowship. She is a 2022 LACMA Art and Tech Grant recipient and this year, she'll have her first solo mid-career retrospective at the Georgia Museum of Art. On the show today we are welcoming Heidi Johnson of Hijinx PR in Los Angeles. Man One is unfortunately missing in action today but never fear, we still have a great, free-wheeling show for all of you dedicated listeners out there! First off we chat about the upcoming DesignerCon, which we are super excited about and hear from Heidi about how she is involved and what to expect. From there we look at some of the other conventions Heidi helps organize and she also gives us some great stories from a recent trip to Chicago for an event remembering the history of the Black Panthers. The episode then takes a decidedly political turn and we dig into the recent mass shooting in Thousand Oaks, the LA fires and the spectrum of political views as they are spread across the country. We finish thinking about ways in which the US might be able to overcome the huge divides that we currently see between the left and right, Trump supporters and critics and ultimately find a way towards a more functioning and empathetic society. Heavy stuff! Stay tuned for all of that and more! Key Points From This Episode: The upcoming DesignerCon for 2018 in Anaheim, CA Some of the events, panels and screenings that will be at the conference this year. The intersection of virtual reality and fine art. Some of the other events and areas in which Heidi is involved. The LA Art Show and what Heidi is organizing this year. The Black Panther event that Heidi was involved in in Chicago. Racism and the reality of what the elections showed us. Media bubbles and the difference between coastal and middle America. Thinking back on memories of Chicago and LA before climate change. The latest mass shooting in Thousand Oaks. USA’s current political climate, the media and the conservative backlash. Political art and depictions of Trump. Liberal and democratic apathy and being shocked into action. And much more! Inspired by Susan J. Brison's book Aftermath about violent trauma and the body, visual artist and feminist Nancy Baker Cahill's current body of work SURDS features small and large-scale drawings that merge her interpretation of the human body as a complicated abstraction engaged in perpetual struggle with a mathematical concept in order to explore the human "rational" desire for understanding through order and logic, even when faced with a nonsensical act like sexual assault.
