On today's episode I have artist and writer Nathan Hamill and Filipkowski! I first found Nathan's work at DesignerCon back in 2019, which eventually led me to the comic strip that he and Eric started making called "2 Dumb Dinos". After over 295 comic strips, they released a "2 Dumb Dino's" book back in October, and I have absolutely loved it! I talked with Nathan and Eric about how they got their start, what led to them creating "2 Dumb Dinos", Nathan working at Bongo Comics on "The Simpsons", Eric working on "Drunk History" where he played Abraham Lincoln, getting to work on South Park and Sponge Bob, their mutual bonding over The Simpsons and the Chris Elliot sitcom, "Get A Life", and so much more. A huge Thank You to Nathan and Eric for taking the time to join me on the show. Make sure to follow them on all of the links at www.onthemicpodcast.com and pick up a copy of "2 Dumb Dinos" online or at. your local comic book shop! Thanks, Nathan and Eric! Enjoy the episode!

In this heartfelt episode, join us as we pay tribute to the legendary Frank Kozik, a creative genius who left an indelible mark on the world of art and pop culture. Hosted by a special co-host, Jermaine Rogers, we delve into the life and legacy of Frank Kozik, who sadly passed away last year at the age of 61. Kozik's impact on the art world was immense. Known for his contributions as "The Modern Gig Poster," a master of vinyl toy design, and a relentless explorer of pop culture's depths, Kozik's journey resonates with Andy Warhol's mantra: "Good Business Is The Best Art." Often referred to as the "Punk Rock Warhol" by Sheppard Fairey, Frank Kozik succeeded at everything he tried, and that's why his absence feels so profound. In this episode, we explore how Frank Kozik's art and legacy will continue to inspire and captivate future generations. We extend our gratitude to his partner Sharon, Scott Tolleson, and, of course, our amazing co-host, Jermaine Rogers, for joining us in this tribute to a true creative icon. Join us as we celebrate the enduring impact of Frank Kozik's art and remember the man who made it all possible. While much of the country prepares for a frosty festive season, the holidays look a little different in Los Angeles. Imagine palm trees decked out with baubles and twinkling lights, sunny skies, and 70 degree temperatures. With Christmas just around the corner, our parent company, Crewest Studio, wanted to spread the holiday cheer, put some positive vibes into the world, and celebrate the City of Angels' legendary hip-hop roots. Produced as a “special gift” to the City of Los Angeles, “Christmas in L.A.” is a free, downloadable song that taps into the city's hip-hop culture with special guest performances. Join us as they share their memories of celebrating warm Christmases in California and reflect on the unforgettable legacy of hip-hop in L.A. “From the minute we thought of doing the [“Christmas in L.A.”] project, we knew we wanted it to be 100 percent pure L.A.,” says Scott. “It had to be real; it had to be authentic. To be able to get this line-up, this roster of L.A. emcees, is such a huge honor. It elevates this project in such a special way. Everybody brings their unique flavor to what is really a Christmas story.”“Christmas in L.A.” is available to download on Crewest Studio or for streaming on Spotify or Apple Music. DesignerCon returns for its 18th Annual events from the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA, running from December 15-17, 2023. We were thrilled to speak with Ben Goretsky about DesignerCon, how things have evolved from a collector convention to a full blown designer event with talent around the world as well as Vinny growing up and becoming Vincent. A lot of people aren't the biggest fans of these carded Black Series figures. But, I love them, including the next wave of ROTJ figs. At least they give people another chance at some figures they may have missed. If you were like me, you missed the Origins Camo Khan. Let's hope we get another shot and that great international variant. People had plenty of chances to vote for the Cobra Tacticition. I voted like 5 times. Glad to see my choice won. Finally, we didn't think it would happen, but the Death(a)saurus killed it. Not only passing the funding goal, but selling 50% more units in just 14 days.
Our duo of daikaiju devotees, "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key, return to bash the 1957 Toho sci-fi classic, The Mysterians, with a hatred not seen since War of the God Monsters. Maybe they just don't share that same love of primary colors, large underwear, and repetitive explosions? Holy smokes, my Cool Friend Cory Privitera is one of the leading names in the Sofubi world (I had to look it up too). You might now him as Science Patrol, you might not know him at all. You're going to want to, though. Joining me remotely from Tokyo, Cory has quickly become one of the most prolific creators of vinyl toys out there, consistently selling everything he makes out in record time. The story of how we met is incredibly serendipitous, rooted back to DesignerCon (remember cons?) and we've become fast friends. Listen to me grill him about the path that would lead a dude from Buffalo to pack up and move across the globe to make toys. I'm so stoked we got to schedule time to talk and now I'm excited to share that conversation with you. Don't forget to follow Cory on IG at @science_patrols after you listen. Or before, I'm not your boss or anything.
Artists who are willing to put themselves in harm's way are a rare bread, and those who use their work to help others are perhaps even rarer. Photographer, Brian McCarty, is one of these unique artists, and since 2011, he has been collaborating with the United Nations and other NGOs to help traumatized children in war zones. Through his project, War Toys, Brian uses the power of children's toys, free play, and his camera to help these children process their pain. Brian has worked in places like Iraq, Syria, and the West Bank, and he joins us today to share insights into his work. We begin by hearing about his experience of working in a war zone and the complex emotions these spaces cause him to feel. On the one hand, he is exposed to the darkest side of humanity, while on the other, he sees people trying to help in the most selfless ways. Brian talks about the absurd and trite nature of his work and how this exact absurdity ultimately hooks people and draws them in. This endeavor has not been easy for a variety of reasons, and Brian shares more about the 15-year journey he has been on which culminated in forming a non-profit last year. Naturally, we discuss the pandemic, where Brian explains why he – like many who have worked in war zones – is particularly on edge about the election and the conflict that may come with the transfer of power. Our conversation also touches on projects Brian has in the pipeline, the immense power of art therapy in high-conflict areas and war zones, and the potential of a documentary about his work being made. Tune in today to hear more. Key Points From This Episode: Hear how Brian was drawn to photographing toys, a passion that started at a young age. What it's like to be working in an active war zone; it's an addicting experience. The long road Brian walked to finally get to work in a war zone – It took 15 years to get there. What Brian believes the hook of his work – which at first glance seems trite – ultimately is. Brian's relationship with toy manufacturers and the support they provide him. Forming the War Toys non-profit; why Brian finally decided to launch it last year and their pilot project. The interesting connection Brian has seen between toy guns and active war zones. War zones reveal both the primal and deeply hopeful nature of human beings. How religion affects the work Brian does and what he has learned along the way. The difficulty that comes with trying to find children again in high conflict areas and war zones. Find out how the lessons Brian has learned from his work have helped him in the pandemic. How Brian is using this newfound time seeing as he is unable to travel. Donating to War Toys; what the money will be used for. Some important photographers like Chris Hondros and Dickey Chapelle Brian hopes to honor. Why Brian doesn't think that the media will be protected in war zones again. Insights into DesignerCon and why Brian is so excited about what is happening in the space. What Brian's day-to-day looks like and how he stays disciplined. Brian's fundraising goal for 2021 and the work he hopes to do going forward. Children in war zones need to be taught emotional literacy because they are often detached from their feelings. Capturing the work; how filming has formed a part of Brian's project. Where to find Brian and War Toys online. For more information and photos, visit here: https://notrealart.com/brian-mcCarty
One of my new favorite artists and people M.K. Komins joins me on the Nod! A multi-medium'd magician of an artist, M.K. is a bright, curious and friendly soul with a huge heart & and razor sharp mind. We get into so much good shit on this episode. One of the many joys of doing this podcast is meeting new people and making new friends but there is just something so incredible about documenting the very first time you talk to someone and having it be such a barn burner of a conversation. The themes range from caretaker self-care during a crisis, imposter syndrome, addiction & recovery, the challenges & blessings of life as an artist, the healing harmonious power of empathy and soooooo much more. Check out her Designer Con instagram takeover today (May 28th from 2pm-4pm PST) Follow M.K on instagram! Go to her website! DesignerCon is one of the undisputed highlights of the art calendar, and the event is growing from strength to strength.
