Ep.237 Amanda Coulson has worked for three decades as a scholar, critic, curator and cultural producer, having collaborated with artists and institutions, private and corporate colleagues, in the US, Europe, and various sites in the Caribbean. A dual-national (Bahamas/US), she grew up between London, Nassau, and New York, where she studied for her Master's Degree at the Institute of Fine Arts (NYU) and started her career at the Old Master dealers, Wildenstein & Sons, going on to work in various art galleries in London, Paris and Milan. Developing as a writer, Coulson spent 2 years as the international Editor of tema celeste, an Italian bi-lingual contemporary art magazine, before consolidating her critical practice writing for a variety of publications (Frieze, Modern Painters, ARTNews, among others) and providing critical texts for monographic gallery and museum shows. Coulson also worked as a freelance curator in Germany, organizing several exhibitions in Berlin, Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Leipzig and Vienna (Austria), with special attention to Bahamian artists. Noting a lack of platforms for galleries representing emerging art, in 2005 she co-founded the VOLTA art fairs, which take place annually in New York and Basel, Switzerland. In 2011, she was invited home to The Bahamas to be Executive Director at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB), where her focus was on increasing global awareness of the contemporary Caribbean art scene and on expanding the capacity and reach of the NAGB through a rigorous combination of capital works, collaborative projects and the building of strong inter-island, regional and international networks. She served on the Davidoff Art Initiative (now Caribbean Art Initiative) Board from 2012-2018, and on the Board of the Museums Association of the Caribbean (MAC) until she stepped down from the NAGB in 2021, after a decade at the helm. She is the founding partner at TERN, a new Nassau-based gallery operated by three Bahamian women whose aim is to support Bahamian and Caribbean artists in telling their own stories the global stage. This conversation is about finding home within ourselves, embracing the stories that shape us, and carrying them forward with intention. On this episode I'm joined by Taylor Renee Aldridge. Taylor Renee Aldridge is a writer and curator based in Detroit, Michigan. In 2014, with writer Jessica Lynne, she co-founded ARTS.BLACK, an online journal of art criticism from Black perspectives. In Fall 2024, she assumed the role of Executive Director at the Modern Ancient Brown Foundation. In the episode we discuss her return to her native Detroit, the importance of ancestral practice, why there's a lack of art criticism today, and what she's excited about for the future. Taylor has edited and contributed to numerous exhibition catalogs, including Enunciated Life (CAAM, 2021) and Mario Moore | Enshrined: Presence + Preservation (Charles H. Wright Museum, 2021).  Her writing has appeared in Artforum, The Art Newspaper, Art21, ARTNews, CanadianArt, Contemporary&, Detroit Metro Times and SFMOMA's Open Space. She has organized exhibitions with the California African American Museum (CAAM), Detroit Institute of Arts, and Cranbrook Art Museum, including the critically acclaimed Simone Leigh (2024, CAAM & LACMA). Taylor is the recipient of the 2016 Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant for Short Form Writing and the 2019 Rabkin Foundation Award for Art Journalism. She holds an MLA from Harvard University with a concentration in Museum Studies and a BA from Howard University with a concentration in Art History.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 3, 2025 is: sarcophagus • sahr-KAH-fuh-gus • noun Sarcophagus refers to a coffin, and specifically a stone coffin. // The crypt under the abbey church contains the sarcophagus of the monastery's founding abbot. Many of the coffins, along with scattered bones, remain unidentified. Body-eating coffins might sound like something out of a horror film, but flesh-eating stone? The latter plays a role in the etymology of sarcophagus; it is the literal translation of líthos sarkóphagos, the Greek phrase that underlies the English term. The phrase traveled through Latin between Greek and English, taking on the form lapis sarcophagus before being shortened to sarcophagus. It's not clear whether the ancient Romans believed that a certain type of limestone from the region around Troy would dissolve flesh (and thus was desirable for making coffins); that assertion came from Roman scholar Pliny the Elder, but he also reported such phenomena as dog-headed people and elephants who wrote Greek. Regardless, there is no doubt that the ancient Greek word for the limestone traces back to a combination of sárx, meaning "flesh," and a derivative of phagein, a verb meaning "to eat."

The article also helped promote efforts to get the collection of his works, owned by Todd Barrowcliff, hopefully into a museum or academic institution. Not only was Todd interviewed but also Dr. Jacquelyn McDonald, (University of Texas, Dallas), who has an expertise in early 20th century German art. The news of this article also prompted a presentation hosted by the Fritz Ascher Society, who's mission it is to present history on artists persecuted by the Nazis. Both Dr. McDonald and myself were interviewed (link to this at YouTube). Having this artist get national and potentially international attention again is a delight for me - since it highlights that this podcast series does profile poeple that have some importance historically. He previously served as a staff writer and editor at Art in America and a staff writer at Artnet News. Lana Z Caplan works across various media – including single-channel films or videos in essay form, interactive installations, video art, and photography. Her recent photographic monograph, Oceano (for seven generations) published by Kehrer Verlag in 2023, contrasts the historic inhabitants of California's Oceano Dunes – the Indigenous Chumash and a colony of depression-era artist and mystic squatters – with the current ATV riding community which is the source of a public health crisis in neighboring communities. Oceano (for seven generations) is in the collection of museums including Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Getty Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston and The Cleveland Museum of Art. Hein Koh (b. 1976, Jersey City, N.J.) lives and works in Brooklyn. She graduated from Dartmouth College with a dual B.A. in studio art and psychology in 1998, and received her M.F.A. in painting from Yale University in 2004.  Koh has exhibited internationally, receiving features in Artforum, ArtNews, The Atlantic, The Brooklyn Rail, The Huffington Post, Hyperallergic, New York Magazine, The New York Times, Time Out New York, and The Wall Street Journal, among others. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Garage Museum in Russia and the Xiao Museum in China. In 2019, the artist mounted her first public installation at Rockefeller Center with the Art Production Fund. In 2021, Koh presented her first institutional solo show at SCAD Savannah College of Art and Design Museum, titled ‘Hope & Sorrow'. The site-specific installation transformed the museum's Jewel Boxes into gardens for larger-than-life anthropomorphized flowers—made up of the artist's very own soft-sculptures of metallic spandex, velvet, and satin, set against vinyl backdrops and Astroturf. In 2022, her first exhibition catalogue was printed in conjunction with her solo show ‘On the Edge of a Precipice' at the gallery. ‘Hope Springs Eternal' marks our fourth solo project with Koh, and her first in the main gallery space at 16 East 55th Street. Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. Today, Emily chats with Ceramic Sculptor Wanxin Zhang...Wanxin discusses his journey from studying art in China, his move to America, and the influence of prominent Bay Area artists on his work. He shares how artists like Robert Arneson and Viola Frey helped shift his perception of ceramics from craft to fine art. Wanxin's sculptures, which blend historical references with contemporary culture, are showcased in several prestigious museums and galleries. He recounts his early inspiration from his mother and the pivotal moment he decided to move to the U.S. Wanxin also talks about how changing his medium from metal to clay allowed him to express his identity and cultural heritage more profoundly.About Artist Wanxin Zhang:Wanxin Zhang was born and educated in China. He graduated from the prestigious LuXun Academy of Fine Art in Sculpture in 1985. In 1992, after Zhang established his art career as a sculptor in China, he relocated to San Francisco with his family and received his Master in Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University. Zhang had been on the faculty of the Academy of Art University, Department of Art Practice at University of California, Berkeley and California College of The Art in Oakland, and the San Francisco Art Institute. Zhang's sculptures represent a marriage between historical references and a contemporary cultural context; they carry messages of social and political commentary. His work is deeply influenced by the Bay Area figurative movement and artists such at Peter Voulkos and Stephen De Staebler. As a studio sculptor and educator, Zhang was the first place recipient of the Virginia A. Groot Foundation Grant in 2006 and the Joan Mitchell Grant in 2004. His sculptures have been shown in San Francisco,  Santa Fe, Miami, Seattle, Palm Desert and New York City. In 2007, his pieces were part of the 22nd UBE Sculpture Biennial in Japan; in 2008, his sculpture was selected by the Taipei Ceramics Biennial in Taiwan; and in 2013, he was part of the Da Tong's 2nd International Sculpture Biennial in China. Zhang had his first solo art museum show at the University of Wyoming Art Museum in 2006, with solo museum exhibitions following at the Arizona State University Art Museum, Boise Art Museum in Idaho, Fresno Art Museum in California, The Alden B. Dow Museum of Science & Art in Michigan, Bellevue Arts Museum in Washington, and Holter Museum of Art in Montana. His works have been selected to be included in Confrontational Ceramics by Judith Schwartz, and can be found in major art magazines such as "Art News," "Art in America," "Sculpture," and "American Ceramics." Zhang has many public collections, and his private collectors are located both nationally and internationally. Parul Kapur's novel Inside the Mirror (University of Nebraska Press, 2024) centers on twin sisters growing up in 1950s Bombay, who aspire to become artists. The family is still recovering from the Partition of India in 1947, especially the twins' grandmother, who once fought for justice against the British regime. One sister is supposed to study medicine, but she is a talented painter, and other studies education, but she is highly trained in a classical Hindu dance form called Bharata Natyam. They live in a Bengali community in which parents choose their daughters' husbands and society demands conformity. Jaya's paintings and Kamlesh's dancing could destroy their chances of finding a good husband, ruin their father's career, and affect the family's standing in their community. Jaya moves out of the house, an aberration not only affects her medical schooling, but also disturbs the bond she has with her twin. This is a beautifully written novel about family, art, British colonialism, and coming of age in a time and place in which women could not easily choose their own paths. Parul Kapur was born in Assam, India and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was seven. She received a BA in English Literature from Wesleyan University and an MFA from Columbia University. Returning to India, she worked for a year as a reporter for the city magazine Bombay, covering social issues, and culture and the arts. A journalist, literary critic and fiction writer, Parul was a press officer at the United Nations in New York and a freelance arts writer for The Wall Street Journal Europe, New York Newsday, ARTnews, and Art in America during a decade spent in Germany, France, and England. Her articles and reviews have also appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, Esquire, GQ, Slate, Guernica, and Los Angeles Review of Books. Her short stories appear in Ploughshares, Pleiades, Prime Number, Midway Journal, Wascana Review, and the anthology {Ex}tinguished & {Ex}tinct. Ep.190 Uman's dazzling visual vocabulary reflects her life and expansive cross-cultural experiences. Born in Somalia and raised in Kenya, she migrated to Denmark as a teenager and later to New York NY as a young adult. Now, with a home and studio in Upstate New York, Uman paints richly-hued worlds replete with gesture, geometry and the sublime. An intuitive artist, her influences abound from memories of East African childhood, a rigorous education in traditional calligraphy and a fascination with kaleidoscopic color and design. With nods to self-portraiture and fictional topographies, Uman's paintings speak fluently of liminal navigation. Her work contemplates both the physical and spiritual, intertwining abstraction, figuration, meditative patterning and a reverence for the natural world. Ep 175~ The paintings of Calida Rawles (b. 1976, Wilmington, DE; lives and works in Los Angeles, CA) merge hyper-realism with poetic abstraction. Situating her subjects in dynamic spaces, her recent work employs water as a vital, organic, multifaceted material, and historically charged space. Ranging from buoyant and ebullient to submerged and mysterious, Black bodies float in exquisitely rendered submarine landscapes of bubbles, ripples, refracted light and expanses of blue. For Rawles, water signifies both physical and spiritual healing as well as historical trauma and racial exclusion. She uses this complicated duality as a means to envision a new space for Black healing, and to reimagine her subjects beyond racialized tropes. Ep.174 Yvette Mayorga is a multidisciplinary artist based in Chicago, Illinois. Her work links feminized labor and the aesthetics of celebration to colonial art history and racialized oppression through the guise of using pink as a weapon of mass destruction.
