Jen Uphoff Gray welcomes Kait Kerrigan and Nathan Tysen, writer and lyricist of Broadway's THE GREAT GATSBY! In this episode, this musical power couple shares their insight into the broken pipeline of musical theater development, which leaves countless new works stuck in limbo. We discuss the roadblocks that prevent fresh stories from reaching American audiences and why regional theaters hesitate to take the leap. But it's not all bad news - we also explore real solutions for making the pipeline more accessible, sustainable, and artist-friendly. A candid, insightful conversation about the future of musical theater and what it will take to get new voices heard. Bonus: Kait and Nathan reference the types of grants and financial assistance that keeps many writers afloat while they create America's next musical sensation. Here's a link to the Dramatists Guild resource directory of Grants & Fellowships.

It's time to grab a "window seat" and be on your best "model behavior" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 2017's Amélie and 2010's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown on episode fourteen of My Favorite Flop.   ABOUT AMÉLIE Based on the 2001 French film of the same name, Amélie tells the story of a shy waitress who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better while struggling with her own isolation. The musical features music by Daniel Messé, lyrics by Messé and Nathan Tysen, and a book by Craig Lucas. Following out-of-town tryouts at Berkeley Repertory and The Ahmanson, the musical finally opened to mixed reviews on Broadway on April 3, 2017. Despite praise for its cast and design elements, many critics found issue with the score, and the show struggled at the box office. When the show failed to receive any Tony nominations in an extremely competitive season, the show closed on May 21, 2017, after 27 previews and 56 regular performances. A substantially transformed production, with new orchestrations, an expanded repertoire of songs, and new staging in the actor/muso style, opened on the West End in December 2019, at the Other Palace. Critics praised its improvements on the Broadway version, with The Guardian describing it as "a triumph of adaptation" "high on imagination", while The Daily Telegraph lauded the "wonderful, wistful evening" it made. It was nominated for three awards at the 2020 Laurence Olivier Awards: Best New Musical, Best Original Score or New Orchestrations, and Best Actress in a Musical.   Original Broadway Cast Phillipa Soo as Amélie Adam Chanler-Berat as Nino Tony Sheldon as Dufayel/Collignon David Andino as Blind Beggar/Garden Gnome/Anchorperson Randy Blair as Hipolito/Rock Star/Belgian Tourist Heath Calvert as Lucien/Adrien Wells/Mysterious Man Alison Cimmet as Amandine/Philomene Savvy Crawford as Young Amélie Manoel Felciano as Raphael/Bretodeau Harriett D. The musical features music and lyrics by David Yazbek and a book by Jeffrey Lane. Following a series of workshops in 2009 featuring Salma Hayek, Jessica Biel, Matthew Morrison and Paulo Szot, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown opened on Broadway at the Belasco Theatre on November 4, 2010. The production was a limited engagement that was scheduled to end on January 23, 2011, but due to low grosses and ticket sales, closed early on January 2, 2011. At the time of closing, the show had played 30 previews and 69 regular performances. A West End production, also directed by Bartlett Sher and starring Tamsin Greig, Jérôme Pradon, Haydn Gwynne, Anna Skellern, and Willemijn Verkaik opened at the Playhouse Theatre on January 12, 2015 for a 20-week run, and subsequently extended its run, but it was ultimately announced that the production would close on May 23, 2015. Greig and Gwynne were nominated for Best Actress in a Musical and Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical respectively at the 2015 Laurence Olivier Awards.   Original Broadway Cast Sherie Rene Scott as Pepa Patti LuPone as Lucia Brian Stokes Mitchell as Ivan Julio Agustin as Ambite De'Adre Aziza as Paulina Laura Benanti as Candela Danny Burstein as Taxi Driver Alma Cuervo as Woman in Cinema/Ivan's Concierge/Magistrate 2 Justin Guarini as Carlos Murphy Guyer as Hector/TV Husband/Magistrate/Chief Inspector Nina Lafarga as Woman at Train/Ana Nikka Graff Lanzarone as Marisa Yanira Marin as Ensemble Sean McCourt as Man in Cinema/Doctor/Detective Vivian Nixon as Ensemble Mary Beth Peil as Pepa's Concierge/TV and Radio Announcer Luis Salgado as Malik Jennifer Sánchez as Cristina Phillip Spaeth as Ensemble Matthew Steffens as Ensemble Charlie Sutton as Man at Train/Telephone Repairman

A story is an illusion, a series of events that are not really taking place, presented in a way that fools its audience into believing, for a moment, that it is all really happening. Telling that story in a book or movie is a certain kind of trick, with its own rules and traditions, and telling the same story on the stage is quite another. But transferring a story from one medium to another—say, from the screen to the stage—that may be the hardest trick of all. Which brings us to ‘Treasure Island’ and ‘Amélie.’ Two beloved stories, one a classic book and the other a beloved modern masterpiece of cinema, have both landed on stage in the Bay Area, and each carries its own unique kind of cross-media magic. At Spreckels Performing Arts Center, in Rohnert Park, Robert Louis Stevenson’s iconic pirate adventure ‘Treasure Island’ hits the stage in a compact, robust adaptation by Ken Ludwig. Someone give me an Arrrrrrr? Directed with humor and charm by David Yen, staged in the intimate studio theater with exhilarating in-your-face inventiveness and plenty of robust, swashbuckling energy, the crafty condensation of Stevenson’s classic works surprisingly well. The story, though stripped down a bit, is quite faithful to the book, with the exception of a few lady pirates thrown in here and there—something that might have shocked Robert Louis Stevenson and possibly some of the pirates. The strong, versatile cast is led by a grounded, impressively non-cartoonish John Rathjen as Long John Silver, often played a bit too over the top, but not here. In this production, the whole cast slips gracefully in and out of dozens of characters. Animated projections combine with cleverly adaptable set pieces to turn the stage into a ship’s decking with rolling waves over the stern, to an island jungle filled with waving foliage. The effects works well, and if some of the book’s detail and depth of character are swept overboard in the process of translation, the loss is more than made up for in sense of rollicking, high-spirited, double-crossing, sword-clashing fun the able-bodied cast and crew bring to the stage. Translating the beloved 2001 French comedy Amélie to the stage is a different kind of trick altogether, and turning it into a musical only makes the challenge harder. But with a book by Craig Lucas—he wrote the play Prelude to a Kiss—and with lovely, ethereal tunes by Daniel Messé and Nathan Tysen, this supremely satisfying adaptation—directed with immense creativity by Tony-winner Pam MacKinnon—is a sweet, sneaky surprise of a show. As Amélie, the café worker who sets out to make the world a happier place, Samantha Barks is everything an Amélie should be—beautiful, sweet, a little wacky, and thoroughly beguiling. There is a marvelously whimsical sense of innocence in the play, even when incorporating such things as sex shops and orgasms, and the story’s transformation into a musical—rather than proving distracting or cluttered—is so deftly done you might think that the story of Amelie and her bumpy road to finding her own true happiness, was always meant to become a musical. If anything, it’s become better this way. And that’s not an easy trick to pull off. ‘Treasure Island’ runs Thursday–Sunday through October 4 at Spreckels Performing Arts Center, www.spreckelsonline.com 'Amelie’ runs Tuesday–Sunday through October 11 at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, www.berkeleyrep.org

WE'RE BACK WITH ANOTHER bang up week, with some of today's top stage personalities and creative teams. So what are we waiting for, let's get this show on the road... This week we have two cast members from the tour de force new production of PASSING STRANGE on Broadway, Colman Domingo and Rebecca Naomi Jones. Also the composer (Chris Miller) and lyricist (Nathan Tysen) from FUGITIVE SONGS drop in to tell us a little about their new song cycle, and give us a preview of three songs from the show. From Nicu's Spoon Theatre's newest production of ELIZABETH REX Michael DiGioia and Stephanie Barton-Farcas drop by for a little chat. A sneak preview of the upcoming YouTube musical, "Cupid" also awaits.
