What a wonderful Wednesday it was here in NYC as I fully took advantage of living here and got the luxury of seeing 2 Broadway shows in one day. First our friend Josh Harmon and his new comedy drama "We Had a World", which was fantastic. Then 3 hours later, dinner with David Yazbek (the day before he was nominated for a Tony Award) and then his new musical "Dead Outlaw" as it moved to Broadway from the Off-Broadway theatre I had originally seen it in. A True Juskow in the City experience that can only be brought to you by your pal, Dave Juskow. Great stuff. And go see those shows if you come to town.
GGACP looks back on its 6th anniversary -- and the release of Episode #300 -- by revisiting PART TWO of a live evening of story and song from New York City's Cutting Room, featuring Mario Cantone, Marilu Henner, Richard Kind, Paul Shaffer and surprise guest performer David Yazbek (as well as special guests Susie Essman, Barbara Feldon, Tom Leopold, Jackie Martling, Jeff Ross and Alan Zweibel). Also in this episode: Gilbert and Jeff star in “CSI,” David and Paul pay tribute to Ed McMahon, Tony Curtis puts the moves on Bette Davis and Richard and Mario (finally!) debate the merits of “Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol.” PLUS: Mason Reese! “Wait Until Dark”! The Island of Misfit Toys! The musical stylings of the Gilbert Gottfried Orchestra! And a Broadway icon drops by to join the fun! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
We were really thrilled to have Tony winner, David Yazbek be our obvious "Y" guest for Billy Joel A to Z this episode. David has composed the Broadway musicals, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Tootsie and The Band's Visit, with which he won the Tony Award for Best Musical of the Year. His new play is entitled, Dead Outlaw and he's here today to talk about that, his musical influences and, of course, Mr. William Joel. Fascinating episode for someone who has run the gamut in beginning as a writer on the Late Show with David Letterman, creating tv themes you may know and reaching the pinnacle of his field. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week we go down to the West Village to see David Yazbek's new musical, "Dead Outlaw", which is terrific. We also run into my old managing partner from the firm at the play where I have become the Voldemort of the place (as in he who must not be named) - so EPIC. Also, as I go to see my friends Julian and Paul play piano also in the West Village and Julian doesn't finish his songs - it incenses me - so obviously - that's always a good podcast. And top it off with my lectures on the films of 1988 and 89, which include the greats, Sex, Lies & Videotape and Crimes & Misdemeanors. Interesting -- 2 films that have ampersands in them. That was a big thing in 1989. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
We have a theme this month! Both of the musicals we're covering this April are powerful examples of "pastiche" in musical theatre. The way the composers of these shows reference styles and works of the past bring depth and context to their stories and characters. First up, the 2004 musical DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, a show as raucous as it is sophisticated! Here to describe it as, "one of the greatest times of her life," is one of the musical's original stars, Sara Gettelfinger (SEUSSICAL, NINE, and currently WATER FOR ELEPHANTS). Sara joins us from backstage at the Imperial Theatre (where she originated the role of oil money heiress, Jolene Oakes) to share her memories of cast bonding and the joys of "not giving a f**k" in comedy. You can currently see Sara at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway in WATER FOR ELEPHANTS. Buy tickets by visiting https://waterforelephantsthemusical.com You can also jump on Instagram to see more about the show @w4emusical and Sara herself @saragettelfinger. It's time to grab a "window seat" and be on your best "model behavior" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 2017's Amélie and 2010's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown on episode fourteen of My Favorite Flop. ABOUT AMÉLIE Based on the 2001 French film of the same name, Amélie tells the story of a shy waitress who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better while struggling with her own isolation. The musical features music by Daniel Messé, lyrics by Messé and Nathan Tysen, and a book by Craig Lucas. Following out-of-town tryouts at Berkeley Repertory and The Ahmanson, the musical finally opened to mixed reviews on Broadway on April 3, 2017. Despite praise for its cast and design elements, many critics found issue with the score, and the show struggled at the box office. When the show failed to receive any Tony nominations in an extremely competitive season, the show closed on May 21, 2017, after 27 previews and 56 regular performances. A substantially transformed production, with new orchestrations, an expanded repertoire of songs, and new staging in the actor/muso style, opened on the West End in December 2019, at the Other Palace. Critics praised its improvements on the Broadway version, with The Guardian describing it as "a triumph of adaptation" "high on imagination", while The Daily Telegraph lauded the "wonderful, wistful evening" it made. It was nominated for three awards at the 2020 Laurence Olivier Awards: Best New Musical, Best Original Score or New Orchestrations, and Best Actress in a Musical. Original Broadway Cast Phillipa Soo as Amélie Adam Chanler-Berat as Nino Tony Sheldon as Dufayel/Collignon David Andino as Blind Beggar/Garden Gnome/Anchorperson Randy Blair as Hipolito/Rock Star/Belgian Tourist Heath Calvert as Lucien/Adrien Wells/Mysterious Man Alison Cimmet as Amandine/Philomene Savvy Crawford as Young Amélie Manoel Felciano as Raphael/Bretodeau Harriett D. The musical features music and lyrics by David Yazbek and a book by Jeffrey Lane. Following a series of workshops in 2009 featuring Salma Hayek, Jessica Biel, Matthew Morrison and Paulo Szot, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown opened on Broadway at the Belasco Theatre on November 4, 2010. The production was a limited engagement that was scheduled to end on January 23, 2011, but due to low grosses and ticket sales, closed early on January 2, 2011. At the time of closing, the show had played 30 previews and 69 regular performances. A West End production, also directed by Bartlett Sher and starring Tamsin Greig, Jérôme Pradon, Haydn Gwynne, Anna Skellern, and Willemijn Verkaik opened at the Playhouse Theatre on January 12, 2015 for a 20-week run, and subsequently extended its run, but it was ultimately announced that the production would close on May 23, 2015. Greig and Gwynne were nominated for Best Actress in a Musical and Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical respectively at the 2015 Laurence Olivier Awards. Growing up in the midwest the seventh of eleven children- Norbert Leo Butz was surprisingly unaware of The Tony Awards. If he had practiced any speech in his bathroom mirror it most likely would have been for the Academy Awards or Grammy Awards yet here he is - a two time Tony Award winner. The win for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was such a joyous win and joyous night for Mr. Butz. It was while Norbert were starring in The Last Five Years that David Yazbek came to him and said he was writing the musical version of Dirty Rotten Schedules and wanted him to be in it. In this episode Norbert is so honest and vulnerable as he describes how often he felt like he didn’t know what he was doing with the role- wasn’t sure he was funny enough ( of course he was !!!) and then we talk about the night Bruce Springsteen came to see the show and how that made him weep for hours after because of the enormous emotional reaction he had to meeting his idol. That and so much more as we deep dive into the life of two time Tony Award winner- Norbert Leo Butz. Hosted by Ilana Levine, Produced by Alan Seales, part of the Broadway Podcast Network. After penning the scores to musicals like The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and now the widely acclaimed The Band's Visit, three-time Tony nominee DAVID YAZBEK can seem like a songwriting chameleon of sorts. And yet, there is something so unmistakable about his work. According to Yazbek, The Band's Visit, currently playing at Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre, marries his day job as a musical theater composer/lyricist with the sounds of his hustle as an eclectic recording artist. Here's what we learned from the music man as he looked back on his childhood in New York, stripping down on the Boston stage, what he's really looking forward to during awards season and more on this week's Show People with Paul Wontorek.
In this episode we explore the great David Yazbek's "The Band's Visit". We can't quite decide if it's a true story, Easy quietly makes his thoughts known about a certain porifera coming to Broadway, and The Critic can't speak (maybe she should change her mind from her opinion in the opening). Enjoy!
“The Band's Visit” songwriter David Yazbek and book writer Itamar Moses discuss their collaboration on the celebrated new musical based on a popular 2007 Israeli film about an Egyptian police band stranded in a small town in the Negev Desert.

Actress Katrina Lenk looks back on a breakout year, writer Itamar Moses explains adapting unlikely source material, composer David Yazbek encourages improvisation and Tony Shalhoub reveals what he finds "terrifying."
