From playing iconic people to trying different artistic endeavors, Chilina Kennedy is just getting started. Growing up in different parts of the world, she discusses her early experiences and influences that ultimately led her to grace the Broadway stage. From portraying iconic people like Carole King to releasing her own album called “What You Find in a Bottle”, she talks about how she splits her focus between joining other people's works and creating her own, and why she finds it way harder to play a real person on stage. She also gets real when asked if she ever gets tired of playing the same role over and over, and why she loves it when people don't recognize her from the previous roles she played. Putting your work out there can be nerve-wracking, but for Chilina, it's the point of being creative: to be confident and bold and not be afraid to make mistakes. She explains why auditions are a bit like dating, the complexities of casting, and how perseverance can create luck!  Chilina Kennedy is an actress, singer, and songwriter known for playing Carole King in “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” on Broadway. She made her Broadway debut in 2012 in “Jesus Christ Superstar”, and originated the Tony Award-winning role of Dina in the first Broadway National Tour of “The Band's Visit”. She was most recently seen on Broadway in “Paradise Square”, and was part of the originating cast of the first National Tour of “Mamma Mia”. She has her own full-length album called “What You Find in a Bottle”, and has co-written a new musical called “Call It Love”. This month we are marking the 160th anniversary of one of the most dramatic moments in New York City history – the Civil War Draft Riots which stormed through the city from July 13 to July 16, 1863.Thousands of people took to the streets on Manhattan in violent protest, fueled initially by anger over conscription to the Union Army which sent New Yorkers to the front lines of the Civil War. (Or, most specifically, those who couldn't afford to pay the $300 commutation fee were sent to war.)In many ways, our own city often seems to have forgotten these significant events. There are very few memorials or plaques in existence at all to the Draft Riots, a very odd situation given the numerous markers to other tragic and unsettling moments in New York City history. In particular, given the number of African-Americans who were murdered in the streets during these riots, and the numbers of Black families who fled New York in terror, we think this is a very significant oversight. In this episode, a remastered, re-edited edition of our 2011 show, we take you through those hellish days of deplorable violence and appalling attacks on abolitionists, Republicans, wealthy citizens, and anybody standing in the way of blind anger. Mobs filled the streets, destroying businesses (from corner stores to Brooks Brothers) and threatening to throw the city into permanent chaos.Visit the website for more informationFURTHER LISTENINGFernando Wood: The Scoundrel Mayor of New YorkThe Hoaxes and Conspiracies of New YorkAnd did you see this performance from the musical Paradise Square, set during the Draft Riots?

S4E3: Larry Kirwan – Rocking Renaissance Man from Black 47 to Broadway

We're not sure what's more impressive—that Larry Kirwan originated and co-wrote the Broadway hit Paradise Square, or that his early band with Pierce Turner was banned from the notorious New York punk rock club CBGB for being “too demonic.”Larry talks of how his unusual childhood in Wexford and his need to maneuver through different points of view--Republican vs Free State, Catholicism vs Atheism, Irish vs British—laid the foundation of an artistic vision that could see the world through the prism of others.A quest for adventure brings Larry to the U.S. where he dives into the underbelly of New York, Manhattan's Lower East Side, a hard-edged, multi-cultural neighborhood where somehow he thrived. And though he didn't know it at the time, Larry had already started doing his field research for the play that became Paradise Square. But before Broadway, there was Black 47, the band he formed with Chris Byrne in 1989 that would tour the country, guest star on top TV shows, and record music for 25 years. Larry shares the origin of the band's name, his approach to songwriting, how the music came together on stage, and tales from the rock and roll road. But while he was writing music, he was writing columns, essays, memoirs, novels, and plays. One of those plays was Hard Times, set in New York's ultimate interracial melting pot, the downtown neighborhood Five Points in the run-up to the disastrous Civil War Draft Riots. A Broadway producer who saw it at the intimate Cell Theater brought it to Broadway where it is now running on a grand scale as Paradise Square. We wrap up with a look into his latest novel, Rockaway Blue, set in the aftermath of 9/11 in a world of Irish American cops and firefighters on the fringes of NYC.This fall Larry will receive the Eugene O'Neill Lifetime Achievement Award from the Irish American Writers & Artists. It's always a hell of a party, so we hope to see you there! LinksWikipedia: Larry KirwanParadise SquareBlack 47Rockaway BlueCeltic Crush: Website  FacebookIrish American Writers & Artists

“Visibility equals donors. The more work you do, the more you're out there, the more people come to see the shows, the more you continue to maintain your lists of who is coming to see the work – the more easy fundraising becomes.” What is the future of theater making? How has creating theater in rehearsal rooms helped cultivate the multi-hyphenate, an economically friendly hiring option for producers? From the point of view from one of the most sought after directors and cultivators, Moisés Kaufman has incredible insight for anyone who wants to found their own company. What are the first steps? What should they be aware of? How do you raise money? Make your company official? Money can scare people – but it's imperative to understand it when creating theatre.  On this episode we discuss being pushed into boxes and how that affected his journey of bringing the Tony Nominated musical Paradise Square to Broadway. New York City. 1863. The Civil War raged on. An extraordinary thing occurred amid the dangerous streets and crumbling tenement houses of the Five Points, the notorious 19th-century Lower Manhattan slum. For many years, Irish immigrants escaping the devastation of the Great Famine settled alongside free-born Black Americans and those who escaped slavery, arriving by means of the Underground Railroad. The Irish, relegated at that time to the lowest rung of America's social status, received a sympathetic welcome from their Black neighbors (who enjoyed only slightly better treatment in the burgeoning industrial-era city). The two communities co-existed, intermarried, raised families, and shared their cultures in this unlikeliest of neighborhoods. About 100 demonstrators protested outside the home of conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, one week after his leaked draft opinion indicated the court is prepared to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion ruling. The protesters chanted “keep abortion safe and legal” and “no uterus, no say” as they marched Monday in the residential Alexandria, Virginia, neighborhood where Alito lives before stopping in front of his home. Shortly before the protest began Monday evening, the Senate passed legislation that would extend security protection to the justices' families. Authorities say a former Alabama jail official has died and the murder suspect she is accused of helping escape from custody has been apprehended in Indiana after more than a week on the run. The two fugitives were caught Monday in Evansville after U.S. Marshals pursued their vehicle and then crashed into it. Officials say Casey White surrendered and Vicky White shot herself, and was taken to a hospital. The two are not related. Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear said White died from her injuries. The arrests ended a nationwide manhunt that began April 29. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says history will hold Russia responsible for its invasion. In Shanghai, China, officials are going into the homes of COVID-19 patients to spray disinfectant.  Andy Warhol's “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” has sold for a cool $195 million. That makes the iconic portrait of actress Marilyn Monroe the most expensive work by a U.S. artist ever auctioned.  The Washington Post won the Pulitzer Prize in public service journalism Monday for its coverage of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, an attack on democracy that was a shocking start to a tumultuous year that also saw the end of the United States' longest war, in Afghanistan.  U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said during an official visit to non-NATO member Moldova that the consequences of Russia's war against Ukraine escalating are “too frightening to contemplate.” In sports, the Boston Celtics regain homecourt advantage with a win over the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Playoffs. In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Pittsburgh Penguins took a 3-1 series advantage over the New York Rangers.  Two former Oklahoma police officers have been charged with first-degree manslaughter in the fatal shooting of a Black man in December while responding to a 911 call of an alleged protective order violation. Following a monthslong probe by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Comanche County District Attorney Kyle Cabelka on Friday charged ex-Lawton Officers Robert Hinkle, 30, and Nathan Ronan, 29, in the death of Quadry Sanders, 29, The Oklahoman reported. President Joe Biden says 20 internet companies have agreed to provide discounted service to people with low incomes. The $1 trillion infrastructure package passed by Congress last year included funding that provided $30 monthly subsidies on internet service for millions of lower-income households — $75 in tribal areas. Some 48 million households will be eligible for $30 monthly plans for service at least 100 megabits per second. Biden says high-speed internet access is a necessity, not a luxury. The New York Times scrambled to change its Wordle game on Monday to avoid a puzzle answer that might be seen as some sort of commentary on the news. The Times says its game, which gives users six tries to guess a different five-letter word each day had “fetus” as its original answer on Monday. The newspaper said it was “entirely unintentional and a coincidence" that the word came up less than a week after a leaked report suggested the U.S. Supreme Court was about to change the nation's abortion policy. After a slight bump last week following the Fed raising interest rates, stocks continued to tumble on Monday. New York's attorney general Letitia James announced a new program that would provide increased funding for abortion providers in the state.   With anti-immigrant rhetoric bubbling over in the leadup to this year's critical midterm elections, about 1 in 3 U.S. adults believes an effort is underway to replace U.S.-born Americans with immigrants for electoral gains. That's according to a poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Almost 3 in 10 people expressed concern that more immigration is causing U.S.-born Americans to lose economic, political and cultural influence. The United States is suspending 25% import taxes on Ukraine's steel in a show of support for the country's beleaguered economy during the Russian invasion. A small number of coronavirus patients are relapsing after taking Pfizer's antiviral pill, raising questions about the drug. More bodies have been pulled from the ruins of a luxury hotel in Cuba's capital, bringing the official death toll from a powerful explosion at the iconic building to 35. Buckingham Palace says Queen Elizabeth II will not attend the opening of Parliament on Tuesday amid ongoing mobility issues. The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection has interviewed nearly 1,000 people. But the nine-member panel has yet to talk to the two most prominent players in that day's events — former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence. As the investigation winds down, members of the committee are wrestling over whether to call the two men. A person familiar with the decision says Denver's Nikola Jokic has won his second consecutive Most Valuable Player award after a season in which he finished with numbers never before seen in NBA history. The NBA was preparing to make the announcement official in the coming days, likely this week, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the voting results have not been announced. ESPN, citing sources, first reported that Jokic would be named the MVP. The Nuggets' 7-foot center was the first player in league history to eclipse 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists in a season. In an exclusive interview, Patrisse Cullors, the former leader of the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, tells The Associated Press that neither she nor anyone else in leadership has misused millions of dollars in donations. “A Strange Loop,” a new, meta musical about a Black gay dramatist creating a musical, led the field with 11 nominations, including a nod in the best new musical category. “Paradise Square,” a new musical spun from a neighborhood of Irish immigrants and African Americans in Civil War-era lower Manhattan, picked up 10 nominations, as did “MJ,” a musical drawn from the songs of Michael Jackson. —The Associated Press See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

#61 - Rye Myers: Hey Listen! Marketing, Producing, and Sponsorships in the Theatre

MichaelKushner

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 14, 2022 58:54

“I think with mistakes and failure, you really learn who the other person is. Sometimes failure and mistakes are more informative to who your people are because then you really see who you're working with – the real people – and how they handle high stakes, handle drama, and handle problem solving.” Ry Myers is a brilliant, accessible and adorable host and producer who somehow appears to be in more than one place in the industry at once. His brain moves a mile a minute, as do his words, and his effervescent energy is enough to lasso you in. This episode is all about opportunities and creating your own path, which is the basis of multi-hyphenating. Plus, get sneak peak insight of the new musical Paradise Square, coming to Broadway starting March 15th.  Myers is a graduate of Multi-Hype, Michael's Multi-Hyphenate workshop (also created and led by Ashley Kate Adams and Kimberly Faye Greenberg) which he attributes to opening up his mind to anything being possible in this industry.  He has a very optimistic outlook about this industry, which is needed – and his point of view regarding mistakes is also positive. Could the industry benefit from more forgiveness? Possibly so. Mistakes can be made, and they are informative – acknowledgement and moving forward is key to growth in this industry.  Myers has his own show in Manhattan called Live with Rye & Friends on Broadway. Many fans and listeners of Dear Multi-Hyphenate often ask HOW do you start something? In this episode, Rye is chock full of knowledge on HOW to start a project. We cover finances, marketing, sponsorship, audience sizes, negative voices in our heads, and of course WHY he is producing and hosting this show.  “How I've set it up – I say the internet is a beautiful thing – I wanted shows to sponsor me,” says Myers. “I asked who works on X Broadway show and what is the marketing or advertising person for this show? And then it was just an email.” Rye Myers is a talk show Host, Producer, and “Your Broadway & Entertainment BFF!”. He is the Founder of Rye Entertainment, LLC and RyeTheNewsGuy.com, the latter of which he has run for over six years. Rye's infectious, energetic, and compassionate style to connect with people has landed him interviews with OSCAR, GRAMMY, EMMY, and TONY Award winners and big names in the industry, including Nathan Lane, Billy Porter, Susan Stroman, George Takei, David Hyde Pierce, Laura Benanti, Matthew Broderick, and many others! Rye has produced and hosted numerous video interviews, behind-the-scenes segments, award show round-ups, red carpet coverage, live events, and cabarets. Rye also works with other creatives in helping them interview celebrities, produce their dream projects, discover their passions, build their networks, and more.  He is also the Host and Exec Producer of Live with Rye & Friends on Broadway; the popular FREE Broadway-themed variety talk show at BAR 9 on Thursdays at 7:30 pm. The new talk show has taken the theater district by storm and is THE place to be on Thursday nights! Rye also Hosts and Producers “Live with Rye!” his digital streaming talk show series on YouTube that premieres new episodes every Tuesday at 6 pm. You can see all of his Hosting and Producing endeavors at www.RyeTheNewsGuy.com and www.RyeEntertainment.com. He also has an active social media presence so be sure to follow @rye_myers on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok and LIKE /OfficialRyeMyers on Facebook. Paul Lisnek recalls that one wise piece of advice from his guidance counselor during his sophomore year that steered him to become the nationally recognized television commentator, author, speaker, corporate trainer, trial consultant and lawyer that he is today.  Join us in an inspiring episode of Someone Gets Me as Paul shares how he's come full circle in his journey by following his passions, his mindset of always saying yes to his inner calling and maximizing time and resources to create a legacy.  Key points covered in this episode: ✔️  If Paul didn't turn to the communications building that day in his sophomore years, he'd indeed become an accountant doing taxes. His advice for those who are in their 20s, pursue your passion because you only get one shot in this life. But for those who are in their 40s and 50s – stop looking back regretting it. It's never too late to do something else then and pursue your dream.    ✔️ If you said "yes" to something and it didn't feel right, you could say "no, thank you" later. Paul proves that as we grow through life, saying YES is vital because you can always change your mind. But if you get used to turning down every new chance or opportunity, you will never know where it's going to take you.    ✔️ A café named after Paul in his college at the University of Illinois serves as an inspiration and support for students who dream of blazing new paths like Paul.   ✔️ Paul Lisnek has shown authenticity in his long career by melding his gifts and passions: politics and entertainment. Respected in both worlds, he ensures to give back with his wisdom, time and resources.   Paul Lisnek is the multi-Emmy, Telly, Cablefax and Communicator Award winning political analyst for WGN-TV and anchor of WGN-TV Political Report seen every Sunday morning. Paul also hosts the podcast for WGN Radio called "Paul Lisnek Behind the Curtain," which can be heard anywhere podcasts are offered. He hosts "Broadway In Chicago Backstage," featuring the casts and creative of all the major shows opening in Chicago including Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen and the Upcoming Pre-Broadway premiere of "Paradise Square." He anchors Newsmakers for the Comcast Network as well. Paul is the author of 14 books, including his latest mystery series titles: "Assume Guilt" and "Assume Treason," the 2021 Winner of the Indie Book Award for Finalist, Best Mystery.    The Museum of Broadcast Communication in Chicago is home to the Paul M Lisnek Gallery, a permanent exhibit honoring Paul's long career in TV and Radio and presents some of his extensive TV and film memorabilia collection.   Listen to Paul Lisnek Behind The Curtain: https://wgnradio.com/wgn-plus/paul-lisnek-behind-the-curtain/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/PaulLisnek IG: https://www.instagram.com/paul_lisnek/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-lisnek-3374015/   ___________________________________________________________________________________ How to Connect with Dianne A.
