hiveworks mead co. Sean Duckworth, COO and Alexander Mendoza, CEO of Hiveworks Mead Co. are back on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras. The last time they were on the show was this episode back on February 22, 2024. Steve Jaxon starts by asking Sean and Alex simply to tell about mead. It is an alcoholic fermented beverage made from honey. Mead is probably the oldest fermented beverage in human history, is gluten free and has tons of flavor, so what's not to love? It takes about six weeks from beginning the brewing process to when it is delivered. Mead is like honey in that it is not perishable. It might lose some of its flavor but it does not go “off.” Herlinda remembers finding great mead in Finland when she was there to judge a beer and Sahti competition. Braggot is a style of mead that can have stronger flavor and higher alcohol, but which also uses grain in its production. The term Honeymoon refers to drinking mead for a month after getting married. Silver Medal Winners in their First Competition They are based in Rohnert Park. One of their products just won a Silver medal in its category in the first competition they have been able to enter. Mead is actually the fastest growing sector of the alcoholic beverage industry today. The TV series Game of Thrones had a lot to do with raising awareness of mead and making it more popular. Since their style of mead is relatively light, that makes it easy for people to try it and get to know it. Their overall style is a Dry mead, with no residual sugar. Some other meads are sweeter and thicker. Another mead is hopped. Their hopped mead is not a braggot because there is no use of grain. Herlinda wants to mention President Carter who signed California Senator Alan Cranston's bill to allow home brewing in the US. That was the one legal change that let the home brewing movement begin. Alex and Sean have known each other since the second grade. They were home brewing in their early twenties. It didn't hurt that they also played a little D&D. So at one point they realized that there was no commercial product similar to their idea. They are expanding their distribution throughout the Bay Area into restaurants and shops. They will double their production capacity in the next year. Watch out for Hiveworks Mead Co.!
WHEN THE WORLD IS CRAZY AND LIFE IS UNCERTAIN Our topic today is dealing with uncertainty, and I have been thinking about this a lot lately. About two weeks ago I noticed that I was feeling really anxious, super worried, and nervous about the outcome of the upcoming election. But I won't be talking about politics because that's not what we are here for. We are here to get you ready for your pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago, to inspire you to make that dream a reality. But what about the rest of reality? What about the things going on in the world and in our communities that aren't so inspiring and are definitely not dream-like? In this episode I am going to draw some parallels between how we deal with uncertainty in our daily lives and how we deal with uncertainty on the Camino. Welcome to Episode 145 Sponsored by CultTVMan, Sean's Custom Model Tools and Return To Kit Form HostsStuartGeoffTerryRob RiviezzoI'm Rob Riviezzo, I'm from Long Island, NY. I've been building models since I was a small boy, probably around 6 or 7 years old when I used to sit with my dad while he made his HO scale train set. Took a break while in my teens and got back into the hobby around 21 after my mother fell ill and I was looking to get my mind off of all the craziness. I primarily build armour models, focused on mostly German and Russian WWII. I will also build the occasional modern armour subject or Sci Fi model like Gundam, or Star Wars. I am a very active member of Amps (Gotham Amps) and my local IPMS chapter (The Long Island Scale Model Society). I started the Modeling Insanity Podcast in May of 2023 after the Modeling Miscreant Podcast which I was a Co-Host on fell through. I am also now the Associate US Editor of Military Modelcraft International which is the largest English speaking Armor Military magazine in the world. I am a monthly contributor and reviewer for the magazine. I am known for my photo-etch and scratchbuilding. This year we will be adopting an Open/GSB judging format for the first time. In fact I'm pretty sure this will be the very first show ever to use an open judging format in the IPMS Region 9, which encompasses Northern California and Nevada. So we'll be making a little history! With that in mind, the theme of our show will be “Evolution.”I have attached our show flyer below but the pertinent information is that: It will be held from 9-4 pm on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at the Rohnert Park Community Center in Rohnert Park, California. Free admission and $12 entry fee for first 3 models. Lots of great vendors are lined up, we will have a terrific raffle, will be doing a build and take table and then the Open/GSB judging. We are also asking folks to bring kits and model building supplies to the show for donation to support our charity initiative for Help Heal Veterans, a wonderful organization that provides free theraputic kits and modeling supplies to veterans.***************************************MAILBAGWe want to hear from you! Let us know if you have any comments or suggestions scalemodelpodcast@gmail.com.Hi Stuart,Paul ReddingJust to say I am following your Tamiya 1/350 build with interest as I bought the 1/450 Hasegawa version earlier this month as part of a carrier / IJN aircraft rabbit hole I went down...I have steered clear of anything Japanese all my modeling life but finally, curiosity got the better of me and I caved. Lots of research on IJN aircraft and how it all got built up resulted in about 18 aircraft kits...doh! Luckily there were some sales on including the canopy masks so that helped...I haven't built any warships before (except Airfix Victorious in 1/600 in the 60s as my father was on it in the Fleet Air Arm as a flight engineer bringing the aircraft up on deck and have pics of it in Sydney Harbour (see attached). You can also see its' sister ship Illustrious and maybe you / Geoff can identify the aircraft on board - Martlets? One photo shows an aircraft that seems to have stuffed it into the tower. I seem to have ended up with quite a few carriers as I also get sucked into watching docos on PBS America which is fatalA doco on the scuttling of the ships at Scarpa Flow and the film Sink The Bismark didn't help either so that ended up with a few more purchases; I can't see the detail in 1/700 so minimum is 1/450 or the usual 1/350Like you I try to stay away from PE but have bought a few railing kits and also for the radar arrays/antenna if not included; plus the wooden deck sets and a couple of brass barrel sets for Prince Eugen...I also concur with your plan to paint common parts on the sprues and build in sub-assemblies ( I have been doing this for my model railway wagon kits in batches of 4 or 6 - makes for alot simpler build)I am mentally prepared for a ship build; after 1/48 aircraft and 1/24 cars, its going to be very different.Hope the extended break allows y'all to recharge and come back rested - I build for the relaxation like I did all those years ago pre-internet and do it to my own standards ie no interest/point in trying to achieve the standards of some of the professional kit builders out there on YT or the forums***************************************LATEST HOBBY ANNOUNCEMENTSICM's Eight September ReleasesBarracuda Studios ten new sets in two scales to upgrade your Mossie, Sea Fury & YakNew 35th scale WWII US Tank Crew from Border ModelTakom's 35th scale M29C Weasel in Arctic/Antarctic Expedition VehicleTTakom's new art & a BIG box combine their Sd.Kfz.201/1 & 3 + Rommel figure1/72 Bandai PG Millennium Falcon is being rereleased in March1/48 - Mitsubishi/Nakajima A6M5 Type 52 Hei/"Zero" by Finemolds - Dec 2024Gecko to release the Mk I version of the Universal Carrier in 1/16th scaleDB Model Kits [DBMK] is planning to release a plastic-injected Spitfire Mk.XIV in 1:32 scaleLukgraph RAF BE2c in 1:32 scaleMiniArt Kits Available September 2024 What's new at Scalemates.com ***************************************SPONSOR AD #1Cult TV Man***************************************Topic - The state of publishing magazines from Rob's view**************************************WHAT'S ON THE BENCHStuart - Not a ton of time but finished Yamato and started a 1/72 Italeri F-22 which will be made into a what-if CF-22. Steve and Bryan Co-founder of Old Caz Beer Bryan Rengel joins Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras in the studio on Brew Ha Ha today. Bryan was on Brew Ha Ha last August on this episode, and his partner Tom Edwards was a guest on this other episode from March 31, 2022. The first beer tasted today is called Chismosa Clara, their take on a Mexican Lager. There is an amber ale version. This is a lighter one, made to be like Modelo Especial. They are located in Rohnert Park which is growing and gaining popularity. A hazy IPA is the next tasting, called Early Sunset. It's an example of a creative process of starting with a special recipe that they make in kegs only, to see if it becomes popular. If it does, they will make a label and produce it. This is how they select which beers to produce more of. Old Caz is opening a new location in SOCO Village, right in the middle of the square. It is under construction now and their goal is to use the old taproom only for special events and to move the public tasting to the new place. They have a specially designed concrete pad for heavy food trucks to park. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and in Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Herlinda Heras is calling in from Maui. She is sitting at Maui Brewing Company, looking at the ocean. She is there for her birthday and to see breweries that are participating in the Kokua relief beer project. The Kokua Project Kokua is an independently owned restaurant and brewery. The Kokua project is a fund raiser for victims of the Lahaina fire last August. On the other side of the island from where the fires happened, it is still quite beautiful. Being from Sonoma County, we can relate to having fires and also doing brew projects to raise funds for fire relief. Adam Bosch, co-founder of Parliament Brewing in Rohnert Park, joins Herlinda Heras in studio on Brew Ha Ha today. He was on Brew Ha Ha once before, on this episode of September 8, 2022 along with Peter Lopez of Juncture Taproom. Adam has brought several Parliament beers for a taste and talk. The first is a German style Pilsner that won best Pilsner at Battle of the Brews this year. The second glass is the same pils but dry hopped with Riwaka hops from New Zealand. That provides a little toasted spice flavor and makes a comparison with the other pils. Patience, a perfect name Adam also brought a barrel-aged beer called Patience, perfectly named, because time was key. The barrels had whiskey in them for more than 13 years, then the beer is aged in them for a year and a half. Then it was in the bottle for 4 years. At 13% ABV it is an Imperial Stout sipping and savoring, the opposite of a 'daytime' lager. It can be aged like a fine wine and this one is already 4 years in the bottle. On February 9th of 2024 they will be attending San Francisco Beer Week, and this is the first year that the gala is back. For the occasion they are preparing some special releases. One is a lambic made with cherries that they get from a grower near Sacramento. They call it the Bridesmaid because it took second place in several competitions. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and in Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Parliament Who can resist a musical pun? Parliament Brewing company deserves a little bit of Funkadelic in the break. After the break, we hear a quick history of Parliament Brewing. When his brother got out of law school, he got a home brewing kit. He fell in love with the science of beer. They and their father and some partners opened 5 months before the pandemic shutdown, and survived. Adam gives thanks to his staff and vendors and collaborators who all contributed to making it work. They changed their business plan, under the suggestion to "react, don't over-react." See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Check out the family-friendly New Year's Eve party! Two other hazy beers are next to taste. The first is Prism, very hoppy and fragrant 6.6% with herbal tea flavors. The second is Crash, 7.1% ABB, with Riwaka hops. Herlinda was stuck at the airport the other day and got to taste some Parliament Kaleidoscope in the airport bar. We also hear about a trip to Washington that the Bosch brothers took, to see the hops that they use.
On August 31, a Quality of Life staff member finds a 73-year-old male patient convulsing in his bed. With no history of seizures and according to his medical chart, he was given medication ten minutes before the seizures began. The Post Gazette reports the man is rushed to Butler Hospital, where doctors discover hypoglycemia behind the seizures, but the patient is not diabetic. Treating doctors believe the only way this patient's blood sugar could have plummeted to that extent is if someone had given him a massive dose of insulin. The attending physician is able to get the man stabilized and he recovers.About six weeks after the 73-year-old man ends up in the hospital after having seizures, another resident, a 55-year-old, is admitted to the hospital to be treated for a urinary tract infection. While in the hospital, nurses discover he too, is hypoglycemic. His blood sugar is stabilized. Nearly 4 weeks after leaving the hospital, the 55-year-old male patient is back at Butler Memorial Hospital, his blood sugar so abnormally low that medical staff are suspicious. WTAE Reports Investigators say the man's pre-existing medical conditions would prevent him from administering the insulin himself, it would have to be done by someone else. Three hours later his 83-year-old suitemate at Quality of Life Services is admitted with the exact same symptoms, hypoglycemia. Both men ultimately die. While the initial investigation was sparked by suspicions of improper administration of insulin as the cause of the untimely deaths of two patients, coworkers sent the inquiry in in a co-workers direction, Heather Pressdee. 40-year-old Heather Pressdee now arrested and facing charges of homicide, attempted murder, aggravated assault, neglect of a care-dependent person and reckless endangerment in connection with the deaths of a 55--year-old man and an 83-year-old man, as well as the injury of a 73-year-old man. The Attorney General has said 17 patients cared for by Pressdee, died. Joining Nancy Grace Today: Rob N. Herlinda, Sayre & Mercedes Mercedes Hernandez founder of the SOCO Market and Sayre Piotrkowski from HenHouse, are our guests on Brew Ha Ha with Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras. The Freshtival is this Saturday, May 6 at Somo Village in Rohnert Park. Get tickets here, they are going fast! As the show begins they open a Moonlight Death and Taxes that is only a few days old. Brian Hunt from Moonlight and Vinny Cilurzo from Russian River were the pioneers of quality and freshness. Today the billboard outside Santa Rosa says Welcome to Fresh Beer Country. The Importance of Freshness Sayre talks about what they call second-half beer quality. The HenHouse company mission is to improve beer quality for the end consumer and to create wealth for our community. Freshness is the one quality metric that the consumer has access to. You can see if a beer is kept cold and you can see its date of production. These two factors are vital. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Click the logo to visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more info. The best place to get the freshest beer is this Saturday May 6 at Somo Village in Rohnert Park. The event is sponsored by the Bay Area Brewers Guild. Brian Hunt says, "Fresh beer is like live music. Stale beer is like listening from the parking lot." THE SOCO MARKET Mercedes Hernandez describes how the SOCO Market started during the pandemic. Many Sonoma County businesses didn't have a physical location so she invited eleven local makers to exhibit and sell together. It grew to over 60 vendors and then the city of Santa Rosa invited them to a market space in Old Courthouse Square that can have as many as 90. They have a market every month from April to August. Visit our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. The SOCO Market with its panorama of jewelry, plants and clothing vendors lends a fun and colorful atmosphere for the Freshtival. The Art of Freshness Gallery will be showing artists who have created label art for local brewers. The first beer tasted was The Art of Freshness, which is the name of a beer and the theme of the festival. They also taste Matiné Idol. For the rest, go to the Freshtival! Today's tastings on BHH.

Full Episode 4-10-23 - In this episode, Amanda facilitates a discussion about "getting triggered," and hopefully right wingers haven't made it impossible to have that conversation productively. We also discuss how to reconcile hating cops (something Broken Record is quite fond of) with understanding systems of power.
Herlinda, Michael & Keita. Michael John from Omurasaki Sake Co. and Keita Tominaga of Hana restaurant join Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha. Keita was last on Brew Ha Ha on this July 2022 episode. Michael John is VP of Development for Omurasaki sake brewery of Japan & California and chef Keita Tominaga is chef at Hana restaurant in Rohnert Park. Michael has just come off a plane and Keita is taking a quick break from the kitchen to be here. Sake is brewed more like beer, even if sometimes people still refer to it as rice wine. Michael suggests that it's made like a beer and drinks like a wine. Sake is actually now part of the curriculum for sommelier certification. Keita Tominaga reports that Hana is thriving and so is Pabu, their partner restaurant in San Francisco. Visit our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Ross Koda's family has had a farm since his grandfather immigrated from Fukushima, Japan in 1908. He wanted to send his California organic rice back to his family in Fukushima, to be brewed into sake. The sake is called Uka which means metamorphosis, emergence or transformation which the butterfly on the label represents. How Sake is Made Michael gives a summary of how sake is made. The process begins with a rice milling machine that mills off the brown exterior of the grain. The high-grade Sake production mills 50% of the grain off, they to further and mill off 60% for this Sake. There is a chart of sake production on the Omurasaki Sake website, on this page. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Click the logo to visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more info. The Uka dry and black label are the same except they use different yeasts. Everything else being equal, the two yeasts give different flavors and aromas. The Uka dry is shy, light, etherial, dry, crisp. The Uke black label has more body, is silkier, deeper, more floral, more profound, according to Herlinda. Keita talks about trying to spend some more time behind the sushi bar at Hana, rather than being “stuck” in the kitchen. Hana is open Tuesday through Saturday 4:30pm to 9pm and 4pm-9pm Friday and Saturday. Reservations are preferred, especially Friday and Saturday, so call the restaurant or book on Open Table. Michael mentions that sake uses the same yeast as beer. He started this job in 2003 and has visited Japan many times since then. In his first year they brought in 18 products from 11 breweries and the business is still going strong. There is a sparkling sake too, with bubbles that are natural.

Join me for an interview of pioneer in private domain education, John-Logan of the Coots family, who is a private entrepreneur, philanthropist, spiritual mentor, and leader in health, fitness, empowerment, and education. Live Friday December 9, 3 PM CST About John-Logan: Fifteen years ago, John-Logan co-founded Powerfit Personal Training, LLC and has recently turned it into a Private Member Association, which he learned how to do since the “plannedemic” when the city of Rohnert Park tried to shut him down for refusing to close during the ridiculous mandates. With the knowledge acquired during the last two years of struggle from his decision to not close down and fight for his rights, he has learned how to operate Powerfit in the private domain and realized this same knowledge could protect families and their offspring from governmental overreach. He has now focused his efforts to create an educational sanctuary free from vaccinations and other public school dogma by co-founding Rock Rose Farm Education Center, a Private Membership Association. Rock Rose Farm is a charity to protect the medical freedom, rights and magic of childhood, inspired by the very best pioneers in the history of education. For a decade of his youth, John-Logan attended Waldorf School in Emeryville, California where he was profoundly influenced by the attention to beauty, goodness and truth, which ignited his imagination and creativity within a nature-based curriculum. The holistic environment fostered and nurtured unique education that supported each student to reach their highest potential. Self-expression, natural exploration, and creative arts are integrated into all academic disciplines. During these years, John-Logan's mind, spirit and soul have been stimulated and his passion for lifelong learning was deeply cultivated. At an early age John-Logan was diagnosed with being dyslexic, a challenging language-based learning disability. Despite this diagnosis, he believes that living with dyslexia has been a blessing-in-disguise as he has had the opportunity to see life from new perspectives and has been able to discover his true gift of heightened kinesthetics intelligence, and now lives to help others experience the brilliance of their own body and mind. John-Logan is motivated to help others on his life journey, discover and tap into their own unique power, potential and inner gifts. * John-Logan has always been determined to succeed in new and innovative ways through his proactive commitment to being a lifelong learner. He now believes all people should learn to become autodidactic or self-taught learners. John-Logan is hopeful that his unique way of seeing and interacting with the world in order to adapt and excel, inspires other people with similar challenges. John-Logan believes that all people are, by nature, free, uniquely brilliant and have God-given gifts and talents. He is dedicated to inspiring others to learn about, develop and access their own potential to create a healthy livelihood rooted in empowerment and lifelong learning. Erin Levine, Resource Recovery Manager at World Centric, a Rohnert Park, Calif.-based manufacturer of 100% compostable tableware and food packaging, joins Mitch to discuss California's mandatory composting law, SB 1383. After passage in 2016, the new law, known as the Short-lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Strategy, went into effect after five years of preparation on January 1, 2022. SB 1383 requires all businesses, apartment and condo buildings as well as individual homeowners in California are now required to compost food waste, and the law also aims to reduce by 20% the current surplus of edible foods sent to landfills. It is a game-changing move and raises many questions about the compostability of everyday products purchased in the state. We've had WorldCentric on the show several times because of the company's socially-driven mission and focus on reducing use of unrecyclable materials. They contribute a minimum of 25% of their profits to grassroots community organizations and environmental projects each year and pioneered the Certified B Corporation movement in business. In this episode, we dig into composting: What can be composted? How can composting collection can be improved? What are the different approaches to home and industrial composting we need to understand in order to send compostables to the right place for processing. What composting labels to look for, including the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) label. You can learn more about World Centric at https://www.worldcentric.net/.

In this episode, I'm talking with Nicole-Earnest-Payte raped at gunpoint by a man who threatened to kill her. She knew at that point; she wasn't getting out of this. Here is how Nicole told us her story. On June 22, 1991, 21-year-old Nicole Earnest-Payte was awakened on her couch by a man in a ski mask carrying a handgun about 8:30 at night after falling asleep on a couch in her home. He put his arm around her neck and throat to control her, while holding a gun at her head, held her hands behind her back as he forced her up from the couch, partially disrobed, all while continuing to hold a gun to head, telling her that he was only there to rob her and to stay quiet. Still masked, behind her with a gun still at her head, he then led her upstairs to her bedroom, put her face down on her bed, hog-tied her hands and feet together, duct-taped her eyes and mouth, and tied a pillowcase around her head. He then left her on the bed while he went downstairs to go through her personal belongings that he ultimately stole from her. He came back with a boom box. He turned it to a station that played love songs and told her these are our songs; these are our love songs. Nicole never saw her attacker's face because he wore a ski mask and taped over her eyes. Then, he turned the radio on. Nicole said, “At that point, he had only been looking through my belongings and asking for money, But at some point, he turned me over on my back and I started shaking because I knew what was about to happen…. I was shaking and started to cry. He said, ‘Don't worry, this isn't going to be as bad as you think.'” Nicole knew at that point she was not getting out of this. While raping Nicole multiple times throughout the course of several hours, Nicole's attacker threatened multiple times to kill her that night. I felt terrified for my life, couldn't believe what was happening, Nicole said , “I tried to think of ways to get away. “I knew there was no way I could get out of this. I was absolutely terrified. I just wanted him to get out of my house, and I thought if I don't fight him maybe he'll leave.” The man told her he had been watching her for a week. After the first time he raped her, he began kissing her all over her body. He knew details of her personal life: how tall her ex-boyfriend was, where she worked, that she typically left her sliding glass door unlocked during the day while she was at work, generally locking it at night when she was in the house. At some point, he started to apologize while laying kind of next to her. He said, ‘I'm sorry for doing this. I've never done this before and I'll never do it again, I promise.'” The attacker finally left her home at about 2:30 a.m., after taking her ATM card and PIN and tying her hands in front of her with duct tape. Then he gave her a butter knife to cut the tape and strict instructions. “He instructed her to wait for three songs on the radio and cut herself free. Don't call the police or I will know, and I will come back and kill you before they come.' Then, as he left, the attacker said something “mockingly, ‘You should lock your doors from now on. Someone might come in and try to hurt you. 'After the three songs had played, she cut herself loose, got dressed, and grabbed a clothes iron as a weapon because she feared he was still there. Even after finding no one inside the home, she was still too terrified to call the police. She called her mother in Tiburon. She said ‘Mom, I just was raped at gunpoint in my house by a masked man, I need you to get here,'” Her mom told her to hang up and call the police. Nicole, too terrified to call police, truly believed he had access to a scanner.” Within minutes her mother showed up with Rohnert Park police with her as she passed them making a traffic stop in Rohnert Park near Nicole's home. After 27 years of believing he would never be caught and punished here's what happened.

THIS WEEK'S GUESTS Dan Sheehan - California Roots Music & Arts Festival Dan Sheehan is the Co-Owner and Producer of the largest reggae festival in the US, California Roots Music & Arts Festival and the promoter and operational partner for music venues and outdoor festivals throughout North America. Sheehan has been in the music industry since 1999, starting as a radio DJ while he lived in Guam. After leaving Guam, Hawaii-raised Sheehan migrated to Northern California and established his own production company, Good Vibez Entertainment in 2002. Starting with island reggae bands he knew from growing up on Oahu, Sheehan began booking west coast tours and his own club shows in various cities in Northern California. Dan was the first booker to bring soon to be massive bands like SOJA and Rebelution to Hawaii. Good Vibez Entertainment grew rapidly to include producing tours that spanned the entire west coast and four of the Hawaiian Islands as well as mid-range music festivals, but Sheehan had always desired sinking his teeth into a larger, more complex, festival project. When the California Roots Festival came along, Sheehan was ready to jump in with connections, production experience and dedicated staff. Sheehan came on board with Cali Roots in year three and was instrumental in laying the groundwork and building relationships with agents and management—enabling the festival to secure the top names in the scene. With Sheehan at the helm, Cali Roots rapidly grew from a backyard party to the largest reggae festival in the country. Over the past three years, Sheehan has branched out from Cali Roots as new opportunities have presented themselves. As the Promoter of the Avila Beach Resort summer series, he has brought sold-out events to Avila, CA for the last six summers. He has grown the success of the SOMO Event Center in Rohnert Park, CA as he developed annual summer and fall events at this stunning outdoor venue. Sheehan is also partner/owner of the iconic Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo where he has built a new following of locals and out-of-town concert-goers by securing the Fremont as a renowned tour stop for bands of all genres. In 2020, as the music industry shut down, Sheehan paused to take inventory, then guided his team to downscale operations. Within months of the shutdown, Sheehan had nurtured the Cali Roots Festival's brand into a stand-alone merch company that has grown ten-fold in six months, ensuring that the festival will have legs to stand on when the industry opens back up. During off time, Dan enjoys going to the local Monterey beaches with his daughter and wife, hanging out with his Doodle Leo and cooking amazing from-scratch meals for his family and friends. He loves that his work allows him time to travel regularly and support local nonprofits that are near and dear to his heart. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hikingmyfeelings/support
This was truly an honor to be able to talk to the founders of Amy's Kitchen , a company born (1987) in our backyards and possibly the largest employer in Sonoma County. Both Brian and I are huge fans of the pioneers in the organic and vegetarian frozen foods market, and we stayed on our best behavior. Waving my Amy's vegetable lasagna box, as a symbol of my loyalty, we talked about everything from how they met, how they started, how they have grown to a $500 million company and what their daughter Amy thinks about the company being named after her. It was extremely interesting (but not surprising) to learn about their commitment to their company's culture and how they have had many offers to sell but are determined to keep the company private. Believing in business rituals, it was fun to hear how they have kept some of their practices exactly the same as they did when they started including continuing to taste every new item developed on the very same table that they started with. We jam packed this show with so much information and could have gone on for hours. Their story is truly fascinating. You can find them just about everywhere in the freezer section of your grocery store. Their newest part of the business, their drive thru can be found in Rohnert Park, Corte Madera and the SF Airport.
