fWotD Episode 2872: Flight Pattern Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 16 March 2025 is Flight Pattern.Flight Pattern is a contemporary ballet choreographed by Crystal Pite, set to the first movement of Henryk Górecki's Symphony No.3. It premiered at the Royal Opera House, London, on 16 March 2017, making Pite the first woman to choreograph for the Royal Ballet's main stage in 18 years. The ballet won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production in 2018.Flight Pattern examines the plight of refugees, drawing inspiration from 20th and 21st-century events, particularly the refugee crisis caused by the Syrian civil war. The ballet starts with 36 dancers performing on stage and transitions to a series of duets and solos originated by the dancers Marcelino Sambé and Kristen McNally. The piece was mostly positively reviewed by critics, with many praising the performance of the two soloists and the choreography of the ensemble. In 2022, Pite expanded the ballet into Light of Passage, with Flight Pattern becoming the first part of the ballet. The narrative is non-linear and the movement uses lines created by the dancers' bodies and formations of queues to create tension on stage. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:53 UTC on Sunday, 16 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Flight Pattern on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Danielle.

Eve Best is an acting ace. She's got loads of impressive screen credits to her name and is a theater legend with two Tony Award nominations, a Drama Desk Award win and a Laurence Olivier Award win as well. Now she's an absolute force on HBO's House of the Dragon. It probably goes without saying, she's always been a dream guest for Collider Ladies Night, but a recent Ladies Night guest skyrocketed Best to being a top priority. While chatting with Jessica Gunning for Baby Reindeer, a performance that appears to have put her on the path to snagging an Emmy nomination, Gunning pinpointed an actor who made a major impression on her during the early days of her career. That actor? Eve Best. Soon after chatting with Gunning, interview opportunities for House of the Dragon Season 2 popped up, and I jumped on it.Best plays Rhaenys, the Queen Who Never Was, in the Game of Thrones prequel series. Despite having a number of qualities that'd make her an ideal leader, Rhaenys was passed over to succeed King Jaehaerys I for being a woman. She eventually comes to terms with the decision and attempts to serve Westeros valiantly as a dragon rider and as the wife of Lord Corlys Velaryon of Driftmark (Steve Toussaint). Despite Viserys (Paddy Considine) naming Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) his heir, Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) takes the throne, solidifying the stark divide between the Greens, those who support Aegon, and the Blacks, those who continue to back Rhaenyra's claim. As a member of Team Black, Rhaenys begins Season 2 doing what she can to keep her side safe while strategizing for all-out war. With House of the Dragon Season 2 kicking off its highly anticipated run on Sunday, June 16, I recently sat down with Best for a Ladies Night conversation to discuss how she's honed her craft over the years, and Rhaenys' approach to being a strong leader with war brewing in Westeros. August Eriksmoen is an orchestrator and album producer of Broadway musicals and cast recordings, including a credit with Water for Elephants, now playing at the Imperial Theatre. The Beacon resident, who has been nominated for a Tony and a Grammy and won a Laurence Olivier Award from the Society of London Theatre for Come from Away, works with high-end equipment and expansive ensembles. Yet the main photo on his website shows him holding a mandolin, a shot taken during a performance by Bees in the Barn, his modern string band that is rooted in country music. "It's my favorite thing to do," he says. "I compose songs for film and TV and aspire to write for theater, but this format gives me a lot of space." When commissioned, Eriksmoen receives a piano sketch, the vocal parts and the number of instruments to write for (usually eight to 18 for Broadway shows and 25 to 100 for TV and film). "The band size is often dictated by the budget," he says. "I have no control over what the configuration of musicians will be." After devising parts in his head, he inputs them to notation software. Whenever possible, he knocks out a song per day and plays back the scores to see if he missed a flat here or a sharp there. Then, he attends early rehearsals to work with the composer and fine-tune. "I'm there to help the musicians with the interpretation and get instant feedback from the composer," he says. "We tweak the orchestration on the stands, right there." His film and TV work includes ABC's Once Upon a Time, the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building and the Disney film Descendants. Broadway credits include Prince of Egypt and Million Dollar Quartet. The Tony nomination recognized his score for the Steve Martin and Edie Brickell musical Bright Star, which is rooted in bluegrass. Bees in the Barn - consisting of Eriksmoen on mandolin, Sara Milonovich on fiddle, guitarist Jordan Shapiro and upright bass player Nate Allen - specializes in songs and instrumentals loosely based on 18th-century fiddle tunes that veer into experimental territory. The group releases its songs online and plays occasional gigs, like a recent show in Poughkeepsie sponsored by the Hudson Valley Bluegrass Association. Eriksmoen served as master of ceremonies. The sophisticated arrangements of his original songs can present musical minefields when played live. Jagged, percussive passages requiring pinpoint timing melt into fluid melodic moments. In some tunes, the rhythm lopes along and then the dynamic turns on a dime as the tempo begins racing and feet start tapping. Unlike nearly every country-rooted string band across the land, Eriksmoen notates the music and reads it off an iPad during performances. At the gig, he cued the other musicians to impending changes, which they hit with the precision of a Swiss watch. The compact compositions blend in elements of Tin Pan Alley ("Malted Waltz"), classical ("Waterbug," "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot") and gypsy jazz ("Fermata," "Memorial" and "Moose on the Loose"). Parts of "Fermata" evoke something Frank Zappa might have composed for a four-piece string band. The thrill ride "Eclipse" starts with a chugging vamp. After the fiddle plays a squiggly melody line, intricate shifting parts fray into strands that eventually interlock. Out of nowhere, a bluegrass-style guitar solo breaks out. Eriksmoen grew up in southern California and his father often played country. "I heard a lot of Chet Atkins," he recalls. His wife, Jessica Welch, a native of Arkansas, will perform Patsy Cline songs on Bannerman Island in July. After attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, Eriksmoen moved to Manhattan, then relocated to Beacon in 2011 after visiting friends. The Bees began to buzz six years later. He took up the mandolin in part, he says, because it's tuned like a violin and helps with his string arranging. "I get a better sense of the violinist's left hand, what intervals work and how I can move around note-wise," he says. During the Pough...

This week Andrew and Ted watched Netflix's "The Beautiful Game", starring Bill Nighy (Mal) and Micheal Ward (Vinney). No ... these are not household names when it comes to acting but you will surely recognize Bill Nighy when you see him as for he is a working actor that has garnered both a Golden Globe as well as a British Academy Film Award as well as having been a nominee for an Academy Award, a Tony Award, and a Laurence Olivier Award. This isn't your typical modern movie, nope, this is a movie with a real life story and a moral. Mal (Bill Nighy) manages an English homeless soccer team. Vinny (Micheal Ward) is a homeless ex-professional soccer player. Together they take a group of homeless men, each with their own backstory to Rome to compete in the VERY REAL Homeless World Cup. While their goal is to win, they in fact discover who they really are and help, as team, to heal to make their individual lives better. Tune into "Streaming Without A Paddle" to find out if Andrew and Ted think this original film scores or is just a little bit wide of goal.

OmniArts Nebraska is gearing up to open their first production of the year, and their 12th season in 2024.  This production isn't holding anything back and we spoke to two of the talented individuals involved in this play: Christian Novotny, Director - and Reed Westerhoff, who plays the main character, John. This play, though visually simplistic in design and execution, is complex in story.  John finds himself torn between his steady relationship with his boyfriend, and suddenly finds himself in love with a woman. There are only four actors performing in this play, along with Reed Westerhoff, the other actors are Stephen Buhler, Anthony Delaney, and Francoise Traxler.  Costume design is by Sandra Zulkoski, Amelia Roth is stage manager, and technical direction is by Dustin Witte. We had a lovely conversation with Christian and Reed about this play at The Mill at Innovation Campus, so join us in this podcast to learn more about them and this dramatic play.  COCK won a Laurence Olivier Award in 2010 for an Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre. Who is Marv Goldberg? Marv Goldberg (born 1944) is an American writer and historian of music in the field of rhythm & blues . Goldberg grew up in the Bronx, New York and was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School (1960), City College of New York (Biology; 1964), and Pace College (now Pace University; Accounting; 1967). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marv_Goldberg Save this Website...you will need it! https://www.uncamarvy.com/ Louis Jordan - The King of the Jukebox The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame states that two of the most important originators of Rhythm and blues were Joe Turner and Louis Jordan, with his Tympany Five. The two artists helped to lay "the foundation for R&B in the 1940s, cutting one swinging rhythm & blues masterpiece after another".[22] The Hall also describes Jordan as "the Father of Rhythm & Blues," "the Grandfather of Rock 'n' Roll" and "King of the Juke Boxes".[43][16] Another source states that with Caldonia (1945), Jordan was "already crafting the classic rock ‘n' roll sound".[44] The Hall of Fame considers "his classic “Saturday Night Fish Fry” (1949) as an early example of rap and possibly the first rock and roll recording".[17] The Blues Foundation hints that Jordan was a precursor to R&B: "Louis Jordan was the biggest African-American star of his era and that his "Caldonia" reached "the top of the Race Records chart, as it was known prior to the introduction of term Rhythm & Blues in 1949".[45] Some have suggested that Chuck Berry modeled his musical approach on Jordan's.[46] Berry changed the lyric content from black life to teenage life, and substituted cars and girls for Jordan's primary motifs of food, drink, money and girls. Berry's iconic opening riff on "Johnny B. Goode"[47] bears a striking similarity to the intro played by the guitarist Carl Hogan on the 1946 hit "Ain't That Just Like a Woman"; Berry has acknowledged the debt in interviews.[48][49][50] Other sources also indicate that Little Richard was influenced by Jordan. In fact, the artist said Caldonia was the first non-gospel song he learned; and the shriek (or "whoop")[47] on the Jordan record "sounds eerily like the vocal tone Little Richard would adopt", in addition to the "Jordan-style pencil-thin moustache".[51][52] James Brown and Ray Charles also said that Jordan's style had an influence on their work.[52] B.B. King recorded an album called Let the Good Times Roll: The Music of Louis Jordan. The band included Earl Palmer, drums, Dr. John, piano, Hank Crawford, alto sax, David "Fathead" Newman, tenor sax, and Marcus Belgrave, trumpet.[53] Jordan was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame;[6] and in 2018 he posthumously received a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement.[54] The Academy believes that he "led the way for rock and roll in the 50's. His recordings in the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame include: 'Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens', 'Caldonia Boogie', 'Choo Choo Ch'Boogie', and 'Let The Good Times Roll'".[55] According to Cleveland.com, "Louis Jordan had a profound impact on several African-American music genres that evolved during the first half of the 20th century ... He helped make jump blues, jazz and boogie-woogie mainstream forces. Jordan's legendary work would serve as a precursor to modern blues, rock and roll and R&B music".[56] In 1990, Five Guys Named Moe, a musical built around the songs of Louis Jordan, opened in London's West End and ran for over four years, winning a Laurence Olivier Award. It opened on Broadway in 1992 and received 2 Tony Award nominations. Tours and revivals have continued into the 2020s. Currently playing the role of Lance Du Bois in the hit Broadway show, "& Juliet", Paulo Szot is a Brazilian actor slash operatic baritone singer who opens up about his immigrant parents' huge influence on his love of theatre and performing. Thanks to Paulo's love for soccer, his lack of skills for the sport eventually led him to pursue performing instead. He shares his 23-day travel by cargo ship, and his academic and professional life in Poland, including joining a song and dance company. While the pop music style of “& Juliet” isn't exactly Paulo's strong suit, his supportive colleagues and love for trying out and throwing himself into new experiences prevail. He reflects on why he honors his job by respecting everyone and learning from people, highlighting that perfection is wrong and that as humans, we always have to leave space for the unexpected. Paulo Szot is a Brazilian operatic baritone singer and actor who is known for his powerful and versatile voice, which has allowed him to excel in various genres, including opera, musical theater, and popular music. This week's episode is an honorable tribute to late acting legend Dame Angela Lansbury who passed away tranquilly last year at ninety six. Dame Angela Lansbury was an Irish-British and American actress, dancer and singer whose extraordinary career graced the silver screen, prime time television and the stage. Her career had humble beginnings as she took small roles in classic low budget movies after signing a contract with MGM. Her breakout role was in The Manchurian Candidate (1962). This catapulted her into stardom and gave her an opening to branch out into Broadway. From Mame to Gypsy to Sweeney Todd to the King and I, she commanded the stage with star power. But, she was far from done with Hollywood as she gravitated toward sweet, matronly roles in children's films. She gained much notoriety as the voice of Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast. Who can forget her magical antics in Bedknobs and Broomsticks? Anastasia, Nanny McPhee and Mary Poppins Returns are other family films she so beautifully acted in. Murder She Wrote, as we all know, was the television hit show that featured her as a widowed mystery writer who was also an amateur sleuth. Her impressive array of awards includes six Tony Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award, six Golden Globes, a Laurence Olivier Award, an Honorary Academy Award, eighteen Primetime Emmy Awards and a Grammy. Peter Shaw was her producer husband whom she was married to for over fifty years until his passing. They had two children whom she had to rescue from the Charles Manson Cult and drugs when they hit their teenaged years. So charitable and loving, she was very active in AIDS awareness and in helping struggling artists get their big break. Along with my trusted co-host, good friend and performing arts connoisseur Anthony Bonilla, I pay an homage to the legacy of one of the most beloved actresses of all time.

Description: “Reckoning” is the new best-selling book from V (formerly Eve Ensler), author of “The Vagina Monologues” and founder of V-Day/One Billion Rising, the global movement to end violence against all women, gender-expansive people, girls, and the earth. Reckoning, writes V, is “the antidote to fascism”. In this Women's History Month special, which includes performances by V and Laurence Olivier Award-winning actress and Tony nominee, Noma Dumezweni, Laura speaks with V about why she changed her name, her long history working for peace, the current pushback against teaching African American history, and the abortion she had at the age of 23 when she was living in a halfway home. What is the reckoning we need, and where can it lead us? What happens if we do NOT reckon?“. . . There was no way I could bring up a child, and that child would've been destroyed. I realized that I could make a decision not to have that child. That was literally the first time in my life that I went and I made a choice about my own body.”  - V (formerly Eve Ensler)“We are living in a patriarchal paradigm . . . but it wasn't always here . . . It requires imagination for all of us to say, is this racist, patriarchal paradigm, the paradigm we choose to live in for eternity? Or do we want to live in a different paradigm and are we going to struggle to dismantle it?  - V (formerly Eve Ensler)Guest:   V (formerly Eve Ensler), Award-winning Playwright, Author & Founder V-Day & One Billion Rising; Best-selling Author, Reckoning, The ApologyThe Show is listener and viewer supported.  That's thanks to you!  Please donate and become a member.Full conversation & show notes are available at Patreon.com/theLFShow Chapters:(0:00:01) - Reckoning(0:10:06) - Bodily Autonomy and Reclaiming(0:22:11) - Rising UpChapter Summaries:(0:00:01) - Reckoning (10 Minutes)This chapter begins with a discussion about the importance of reckoning in today's world. Vee, the author, activist and playwright, formerly known as Eve Ensler, explains how changing her name was a key step in her own reckoning process. She then goes on to discuss how lack of reckoning leads to the repeating of terrible things that have already occurred in the past, particularly in terms of war and violence against women, trans people, and non-binary people. Vee then talks about the role of solidarity and how it is a place of belonging. (0:10:06) - Bodily Autonomy and Reclaiming (12 Minutes)This chapter of the podcast discusses the importance of bodily autonomy for women and the importance of imagining alternatives to the patriarchal paradigm that has been in place for the past 17,000 years. Tony nominee, Noma Dumezweni performance is featured and discussed, as is V's own experience with abortion. V talks about how her abortion was the first autonomous decision she made about her own body, and how it changed her life. The conversation then moves to how to reckon with the continued stealing of bodily autonomy from women and how to respond. (0:22:11) - Rising Up (8 Minutes)This conversation discusses the importance of creating a positive, revolutionary world in which people can turn their pain into power. Through the example of City of Joy, a revolutionary center in the Congo, the conversation delves into the power of creating a space where people can discover their divine power. It then turns to the biblical story of Eve, retelling it to show her as a brave character. The conversation then asks what is the state of the rising of people around the world, particularly those in Afghanistan, Iran, Congo, and Palestine.

Driven to inspire other people with art, Brandon Victor Dixon has been sharing his talent with the world for decades now. And this month, the actor slash theatrical producer is part of the much-anticipated world premiere of the award-winning "MacGyver: The Musical's" album which will be released on January 27th. Apart from theatre, Brandon is also doing advocacy work. He talks about the We Are Foundation which he created, and how he uses it to bridge gaps between art and us as communities. He brings up a good point on human behavior, what makes it for some people to be kind, and how art can be a gateway to understanding and helping them. In choosing a role or a piece, he considers the tools that can make his role and the exchange between him and the audience the most effective. He adds that the pieces choose him and come into his life at a time when he needs them the most. When he was just starting, Brandon had to pause his graduation to go on a national tour, come back, finish school, and then originate a role on Broadway for which he got a Tony nomination. He recalls his audition process for the role of Simba, why he thinks he shouldn't have been cast, and how he overcame his doubts and the challenges he encountered as it was happening. As one of the stars in the world premiere album of “MacGyver: The Musical”, Brandon talks about his character, doing comedy, and how his process usually adapts to the show his doing. Brandon reflects on his role as Haywood Patterson in “The Scottsboro Boys”, why he considers it his favorite role, and how it ultimately goes back to his advocacy: to change and help people with the power of art. Her performing career spanned 80 years in which she received six Tony Awards, six Golden Globe Awards, and one Laurence Olivier Award. And despite her years in television and movies (her last film role was Glass Onion in 2022), theater was always her first love, having appeared in 14 Broadway productions and four national tours. But as you'll hear in this special episode (with a big help from fellow podcaster Dan Delgado), it was a long and bumpy journey towards the role in Mame that would cement her Broadway career and earn her that first Tony Award. You'll hear from composer Jerry Herman and from Angela Lansbury herself in this unlikely audition story of how a character actress from the movies became a leading lady on Broadway.   Subscribe to WINMI and get Bonus Episodes   OR Make a one-time Donation to the podcast   Subscriptions and donations help support the production of this podcast, not only improving audio and recording capabilities, but it also helps create transcripts like the one available for this episode.   Episode research and sources: "Look Back at Angela Lansbury in the Original Broadway Production of Mame" - Playbill "How Angela Became Mame" - Medium But Darling, I'm Your Auntie Mame! by Richard Tyler Jordan (2004) Anyone Can Whistle - Wikipedia MAME - Wikipedia Sound bites came from these full interviews: Angela Lansbury Discusses Mame - Television Academy Broadway MAME - Sony MasterWorks Broadway ANYONE CAN WHISTLE - Sony MasterWorks Jerry Herman with Barbara Walters on 20/20 (1984) Lansbury with Barbara Walters (1985) Herman Interview for Musical Theater Guild Herman on NPR  “Open a New Window” - 1971 Tonys Awards "We Need a Little Christmas" Piano Version - Steven C Opening Night of MAME in 1966 - Fred Robbins, radio reporter At times certain reports or articles conflicted on particular details or order of events, so best efforts were made to rely on the most reliable sources and err on the side of those who knew more about the events surrounding Lansbury's journey.

Legendary director Peter Brook died last week at the age of 97. Brook was one of theater's most influential directors. His 1970 A Midsummer Night's Dream is among that play's most lauded and best-known productions. His 1968 book The Empty Space is a classic of theater writing. Over the course of his career, he directed actors including John Gielgud, Glenda Jackson, Ben Kingsley, Adrian Lester, Vivienne Leigh, Laurence Olivier, Paul Scofield, Patrick Stewart, and Frances de la Tour, and won multiple Tony and Emmy Awards, a Laurence Olivier Award, the Praemium Imperiale, and the Prix Italia. When we spoke to Brook in 2019, his new play, Why?, co-written and co-directed by longtime collaborator Marie-Hélène Estienne, was about to kick off a tour of China, Italy, and Spain, and his newest book, Playing by Ear: Reflections on Sound and Music, had just been released. Brook spoke with Barbara Bogaev about his remarkable career, his illustrious collaborators, and the process of making theater. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series.
