The Pope may seem like a distant figure. But the newest one has wasted no time making waves. It’s not just the social media posts riffing on what vibe a Pope who originally hails from the south side of Chicago might bring to the Vatican. Because, even before Pope Leo the 14th slid the Papal ring on his finger on Friday, he launched something of an attack on American vice president JD Vance, angering many within the MAGA movement. And in Australia? Many Catholics have already begun questioning how the Pope’s personal views will impact our churches, and even school curricula. Today, chief reporter Jordan Baker on what we can expect from Pope Leo the 14th. And how he may - or may not - intervene in our local religious stoushes, as the Vatican has done, in the past.Subscribe to The Age & SMH: https://subscribe.smh.com.au/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is what people across the nation are asking themselves, since Sydneysiders woke to news that a caravan full of explosives had been seized in the north-west of the city. Just as worrying, to many, was what is alleged to have also been contained in the caravan: the address of a Sydney synagogue. The suicide of a 12-year-old Sydney school girl last month sent shockwaves across the country. It became the tragic flashpoint for a national discussion about bullying in our schools, and the complex set of issues facing students, parents, teachers and administrators. Deep in the snowy mountains is a tiny town called Nimmitabel. It's almost smack bang in the middle of Sydney and Melbourne, it's got a school, a pub, a couple of churches – enough for a few hundred people. It's the sort of place you move to start a fresh chapter of life, to feel part of a community, where literally everyone knows your name and drops round a casserole or a jar of freshly made jam. And Nimmitable is all of those things, but it's also something else: a place where a man by the name of Andrew Thaler, a serial political candidate and serial pest, is bullying and threatening women. It has become the story of the Paris Olympics. How many people have been harmed, in the case of Algerian boxer Imane Khelif? And how badly? Over the last week, the 25 year old boxer's body, mind and spirit have been dissected and condemned by powerful voices, far beyond the sporting arena. Chapter 1:Summary of Book The Great Gatsby"The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a novel set in the summer of 1922 on Long Island and in New York City. The story is narrated by Nick Carraway, a young bond salesman from Minnesota who rents a house in the West Egg district of Long Island, an area populated by the newly rich who lack social connections and sophistication.Nick's neighbor is Jay Gatsby, a mysterious and wealthy man who throws extravagant parties every weekend, hoping to attract specific guests. As Nick becomes more acquainted with Gatsby, he learns that Gatsby was born poor and that his real name is James Gatz. Gatsby had previously been in love with Daisy Buchanan, Nick's cousin, when he was a young military officer. Post-war, Gatsby dedicated himself to gaining wealth and social standing to win Daisy back, believing that he could recreate the past through sheer force of will and wealth.Through his connection to Nick, Gatsby rekindles his romance with Daisy, although she is now married to Tom Buchanan, a man of established wealth and social standing, but also arrogant and unfaithful. The reunion leads to an affair between Gatsby and Daisy, which climaxes in a confrontation between Tom and Gatsby in a suite at the Plaza Hotel. The situation becomes tragic when Daisy, driving Gatsby's car, accidentally strikes and kills Tom's mistress, Myrtle Wilson, on their way back from the city. Gatsby decides to take the blame, believing his wealth can shelter him. However, Myrtle's husband, George Wilson, misled by Tom to believe that Gatsby was both his wife's lover and killer, shoots Gatsby dead in his pool before taking his own life.In the wake of the tragedy, Nick is disillusioned with the East Coast's morally corrupt and superficial society. He arranges a poorly-attended funeral for Gatsby, breaks off his relationship with Jordan Baker, a professional golfer and mutual friend, and moves back to the Midwest. The novel concludes with Nick reflecting on the unattainable nature of the American Dream, and how people are relentlessly drawn into a past that is forever out of reach, much like Gatsby with his indomitable hopes and dreams.Chapter 2:The Theme of Book The Great GatsbyCertainly! "The Great Gatsby," written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a novel set in the 1920s that explores themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess. Here is a brief overview focusing on key plot points, character development, and thematic ideas: Key Plot Points1. Nick Carraway's Arrival: The narrator, Nick Carraway, moves to West Egg, Long Island, to learn about the bond business. They had a romantic relationship before he went to war and she married Tom. Gatsby's primary motive in amassing his wealth and throwing parties was to win Daisy back.4. Gatsby and Daisy's Reunion: Through Nick, Gatsby re-establishes a relationship with Daisy. They begin an affair after Gatsby invites Daisy to his mansion and shows her his wealth.5. The Confrontation: Tensions climax at the Plaza Hotel where Gatsby demands that Daisy declare she never loved Tom, which she cannot do. Gatsby's...
Dr. Kevin Biese gave a talk at the 2024 Wisconsin Atheltic Trainers Association annual meeting on sports specialization and the evolution of the definition and what current and future research is showing about it. The talk was extremely informational and we wanted to share it on the podcast, thankfully, Kevin was more than willing. In this episode, Dr. Biese dives in deep into what sports specialization is and what the current working definition is. I, personally, was surprised at the definition because it doesn't always only have to be about one sport and the focus on that one exclusively. Dr. Biese has some great general recommendations on how you can help ensure children don't overdo it and also on conversations you can have with student-athletes as an athletic trainer to help them figure out if they are speicalizating and how it could relate to any aches and pains or changes in performance they have. So much to take away from this one. Enjoy. Extra resources shared by Dr. Biese below. Last week, Lilie James, a water polo coach at an elite school in Sydney, was found dead. Her death sent shock waves not just through her school community, but across Australia. In part, it was because of her youth, and innocence. She was only 21, and was found dead in the school in which she worked. The man suspected of killing her was a fellow staff member, with whom she had had a brief relationship. But as shocked as people are, James' death touches on a much wider problem in our country. Today, chief reporter Jordan Baker and Dr Kate Fitz-Gibbon, Director of the Gender and Family Violence Prevention Centre at Monash University, on what happened to Lilie James. And what our communities need to prevent more women from dying at the hands of those they know.Subscribe to The Age & SMH: https://subscribe.smh.com.au/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We are kicking off Season 4! On this episode of the Pastor to Pioneer podcast, I have two friends that join me, Tyler Dipprey and Jordan Baker. You may remember Tyler, who has been on the podcast before. He's from Lubbock, Texas, and was part of a team that transitioned a church of 10,000 people and 10 campuses into a decentralized network of house churches, so he experienced the approach of trying to transition a whole church. Jordan, on the other hand, was not a senior pastor, but was an associate pastor of a church in Mansfield, Ohio. He didn't try to transition the whole church, but he was sent out by his church to continue the work of pioneering disciple-making and simple church movements. This episode covers two different perspectives. They bring up so many amazing thoughts to consider when you're going through that questioning of these things like, "I'm having conviction about the church and following Jesus, is it just for me or is it for the whole church? Do I just get sent out or do I try to transition my whole church?"
“The hardest problem in education is the problem of transfer. ChatGPT gives us the ability to practice transfer in other ways… we start to be able to approach problems in different ways that build expertise or intuition faster.” Join Leon Zhang and Jordan Baker in a conversation with Christian Terwiesch, Professor at Wharton and chair of the Operations, Information, and Decisions department and Ethan Mollick, Associate Professor at Wharton. Together they explore the impact of ChatGPT in educational settings: how it can help students accelerate learning, but also situations where intuition is lost by “faking it”. Ethan and Christian also touch upon how the AI tool's ability to increase variability makes it powerful, current flaws in the model, and how students can use ChatGPT to come up with and vet entrepreneurial ideas.
