We find ourselves at the end of Book Two, and you know what that means: another ever-popular recap episode! Using the mind-bending brilliance of the László Moholy-Nagy Finnegans Wake Diagram as a jumping-off point, Toby and TJ try to rank the chapters of Book 2, nostalgically reconsider Night Lessons, and compare the text to a disparate collection of cultural touchstones. Topics may include, to varying levels of detail: JJ Abrams, Luigi Pirandello, Riverdale, The Master and Margarita, the Berliner Ensemble, Punchdrunk's Sleep No More, Passing Strange, ChatGPT, andThe Sound and the Fury. Join us in the temporary high that is generated when two readers assume that hubris isn't really a thing, and that surely they're well past the hardest part now... (Apologies for the sound quality on Toby's mic, it's an ongoing problem that will be fixed) This week's chatters: Toby Malone, TJ Young Progress: 399 pages complete, 229 pages to go; 63.54% read. Brandon has a light that can fill any room—his energy is infectious. But behind that light is a story of survival. At just 7 years old, his world collapsed when his mother became addicted to crack. Homeless and hungry, Brandon took on the role of protector for his younger brothers, every day a fight for survival. By 10, he found stability in a loving foster family, but the grip of addiction lingered in his life. Despite it all, Brandon chose a path of positivity. Armed with faith and an unwavering love for performing arts, he's turned his pain into purpose. His story isn't just about overcoming—it's about thriving in the face of it all. His words, "Anything Is Possible" will forever stay with me. Huge thank you ❤️

In honor of World Mental Health Day, we wanted to share the visualization and song that Quinlan shared in the Land of Qook-a-lackas during our August episode, "The Key to Calming Down." Research shows that techniques like what we practiced in the Land help to promote mental health, and we wanted to share this special visualization so that your family can use it to feel calm, safe, and peaceful. The role of Quinlan is played by Rebecca Naomi Jones, an American actress and singer best known for her performances in the Broadway rock musicals Passing Strange, American Idiot, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. She was also the first woman of color to play Laurey in Oklahoma! on Broadway and starred in As You Like It in NYC's Shakespeare in the Park. The original song, "I Have the Key," which Quinlan shares with the children at the end of the visualization, was composed by Benjamin Weiner, a NYC-based writer, composer, and educator. Thank you to Dr. Cara Spitalewitz who advised us on the mediation that Quinlan leads. Cara is a clinical psychologist who works with children and an assistant clinical professor at Columbia University Medical Center. Find extras and educator resources at playsparkler.org/podcast.

And just like that, Karen Pittman is on the show! You Might Know Her From And Just Like That, The Morning Show, Luke Cage, Yellowstone, The Americans, Homeland, and Disgraced on Broadway. We had a ball talking with Karen about life starring on two very high profile series at the same time. We dug into the rich internal life that Karen brings to Mia on The Morning Show and how she added subtext to all her scenes (“dicks beware!”). We also got into the good, the complicated, and the wildly fun parts of joining the new chapter of Sex and the City as Professor Nya Wallace and what a season two might look like. All that plus: would Nya be friends with Samantha Jones, will Mia finally sing on The Morning Show, and could Karen ever serve as Fight Captain on a show again? Hailed as the “Punk Ballerina” by Vanity Fair, legendary dancer and choreographer Karole Armitage is the Artistic Director of the New York-based Armitage Gone! Dance Company. After rigorous training in classical ballet, Armitage began her professional career as a member of Balanchine's Grand Theatre de Geneve. Soon thereafter she started exploring modern dance when she joined Merce Cunningham's company, performing leading roles in his landmark works. In the mid-80's, she established her first dance company in New York City -- The Armitage Ballet. As both dancer and choreographer, Armitage began combining classical, modern, and street influences with a bit of punk, rock-n-roll, and rap mixed in. She quickly became notorious for her radical and avant-garde work. Armitage has directed and choreographed groundbreaking ballets internationally, and for several years she served as Director of MaggioDanza, the Ballet of Florence, Italy. Armitage also choreographed two Broadway productions -- Passing Strange and Hair -- which earned her a Tony nomination. In addition, we learn how she penetrated the Harlem Ball Culture and brought her experience to choreographing Madonna's Vogue tour.
