Award-winning actor, singer, director, writer, and producer Michael Damian sat down with me in The Locher Room to discuss his return to Genoa City and The Young and the Restless.Michael first gained recognition for his 18-year run in the role of rock star Danny Romalotti on the #1 rated daytime television drama. On stage, Michael starred as “Joseph” in the Broadway production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which broke box office records in both Los Angeles and on Broadway while also earning him a Grammy nomination. In addition to his Broadway career, Michael has released five albums and has had eight Top 40 hits including the smash single, “Rock On” which shot up the Billboard music charts landing at #1 and garnering him two gold records. He won the BMI Song-writing Award for his hit single, “Was It Nothing at All” and has also written and produced songs for the soundtracks of A Princess for Christmas, Flick 2, Flicka: Country Pride, Marley & Me: The Puppy Years and Sweeter Side of Life.Michael has also enjoyed a prolific career behind the camera and has co-written/directed/produced over 15 films and television movies. He is filmmaking partners with his wife Janeen Damian. Michael has co-written, directed, and produced, Much Ado About Christmas, Hallmark's #1 movie of the year for 2020, Christmas Waltz. Some of his other recent credits include the feature film High Strung Free Dance and its predecessor, High Strung, Lionsgate's holiday romantic comedy, A Princess for Christmas, which starred Sir Roger Moore and Outlander's Sam Heughan and launched Hallmark's smash hit Princess Christmas franchise. The Damian's went on to co-write A Crown for Christmas and A Royal Christmas. Michael also directed three films for 20th Century Fox: Flicka 2, Marley & Me: The Puppy Years (which he also wrote), and Flicka: Country Pride starring Clint Black. He directed, wrote, and produced the feature film Moondance Alexander, which was also released by 20th Century Fox and the romantic comedies Sweeter Side of Life and Love by Design.Michael recently produced and directed the upcoming film Paris Christmas Waltz starring Matthew Morrison which recently wrapped production in Paris. In 2022, he produced the popular Netflix film, Falling for Christmas, starring Lindsay Lohan. “You should reach out to Joni.” I'm reading a text from my step-mom and she is suggesting I contact a dear friend of hers because her focus on Musical Improv can take performances to the next level. I've met Joni and she's fantastic. The challenge is: I'm directing a big Improv show this Friday… and it's already Tuesday. So there's not much time to bring her in.  I'm thinking, “What if introducing music now ends up throwing off the performers or intimidating those who aren't so musically inclined?” I decided to go for it anyway. I invited Joni to our Tuesday evening class so she could be part of our rehearsal and get to know the players before Friday's show.  And I create a game set list that involves everyone–from those highly inclined in Musical Improv to those who have zero experience. I want them all to feel like musical superheroes. After the class is over, my phone starts blowing up with text messages from different students. Everyone loved the addition of Joni and her music. And she had a great time too! Experiences like this are just a reminder that it's good to mix things up sometimes. When you try new things and put yourself even a little out of your comfort zone, you open yourself up to a new story of possibility. And when it comes to music, my special guest Dan Kalisher knows a lot about mixing it up. Justine Rima is a an actress who prior to COVID got to take one of the most magical shows on the road. Just shy of theatre closing, Rima was on the national tour of the Broadway musical, Finding Neverland where she played Wendy. The story of the show is all about the origin of Peter Pan and how it got to capture the hearts of people everywhere. Prior to being on the road Finding Neverland was a film starring, Johnny Depp and originally starred Kelsey Grammer, Matthew Morrison and Teal Wicks (Season 1) on Broadway.
