Nick Elam was deep into the world of tiki long before he was even old enough to drink - carving, painting, and even designing bar menus waiting for the day he could get behind the stick himself. He also learned to play several instruments, even becoming a pretty good surf guitarist on the way. Now he can be found at Huli Huli Tiki Lounge in Powell, Ohio, brainstorming new drink ideas with his bar team and educating his patrons on the wide category of rum. He made us a pretty surftastic (and more!) playlist here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1uYMjOZqJ2a8TkPD4BudYc?si=5ff51443db254fcf

The creator of that scoring system, Nick Elam joins the show in the second hour. Are there any legitimate arguments against its effectiveness? He doesn't think so. On episode 160 I am joined by Nick Elam, Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at Ball State University and creator of the Elam Ending, a new basketball format. Nick Elam, Ph.D. is a career-long educator. He prepares aspiring school leaders to serve in the field. Elam previously served as a school principal and math teacher. Along the way, Elam has served in a variety of roles in the sports world. In 2007, Nick devised a new format for basketball, whereby the final portion of the game would be played without a game clock as a way to preserve a more natural and exciting style of play. After years of researching and promoting this concept, the Elam Ending was finally implemented for the first time by TBT: The Basketball Tournament in 2017. Since then, the Elam Ending has grown rapidly throughout the basketball world, being implemented at the NBA All-Star Game, Canadian Elite Basketball League, and dozens of grassroots-level leagues and events. Dr. Elam has shared his research and story in over 300 outlets, including schools, businesses, academic conferences, written articles, and podcast/radio/TV programs. The Elam Ending has brought a lot of excitement to the game of basketball. This rule has helped the TBT grow into what it is today and contributed to the 2020 NBA Allstar game becoming one of the most competitive Allstar games we have seen in years. I’m sure many of you have wondered where this idea came from and how it originated, but now you get to learn all about it from the creator himself. Dr. Nick Elam joins us today to share his story and the exact origins and skeletons of the Elam Ending. Dr. Nick Elam has a strong love for the game of basketball. Some have been critical of his idea, but those who have either played or seen the Elam Ending in action have become believers in it and agree it can help better the game of basketball. The research and numbers that Elam has to backup his vision is pretty remarkable. He will have an educated and eye-opening response to every argument brought up, even for those who love their memorable buzzer beaters or don’t like seeing games end on free throws. This conversation was a true honor for us. We of course loved learning all about the dedication, time and effort put into the Elam Ending, but we also got to learn more about Dr. Nick Elam himself. Like any game decided on an Elam Ending, this episode won’t disappoint. Thank you Dr. Nick Elam! On this episode of The Harrison Vapnek Podcast, we welcome on Nick Elam, the founder and creator of what is known as the "Elam Ending", as he discusses the origins of the idea, its evolution, and where it goes from here. The "Elam Ending" can be seen in action in the 2021 NBA All Star Game on Sunday March 7th.
Nobody on earth has watched more TBT basketball than the legendary Bob Rathbun. The voice of the tournament on ESPN gives us a fascinating look at the uniqueness of calling a TBT game, his favorite memories over the years, and his personal crusade to get the Elam Ending in the NBA (0:00 - 27:41). That transitions to an awesome interview with Nick Elam, who gives his rebuttal to some of the most common criticisms of the Elam Ending (27:41 - 51:48).
Geoff takes us through what he (and many other people) feel is a flaw in the rules of basketball, and a possible solution that was first implemented by a new league in 2018. The Elam Ending is designed to eliminate the incentive for teams trailing on the scoreboard to constantly, intentionally foul the leading team, making for a more consistent and fun game to watch. This GameTek Classic was recorded in 2018; since then, the NBA used the Elam Ending for the 2020 All-Star Game, although they added 24 points (in honor of Kobe Bryant) and played the entire fourth quarter without a clock. The trailing team won. Read an interview with Nick Elam. Watch a couple of examples of the Elam Ending in action: the end of the 2019 Basketball Tournament semifinals, and the end of the aforementioned 2020 NBA All-Star Game.

Late in Hour 1, former NFL agent/CBSSports.com analyst Joel Corry checked in to discuss Patrick Mahomes' contract and whether it sets the market for a future Lamar Jackson deal. In Hour 2, MLL Commissioner Sandy Brown checked to discuss the season which will occur July 18-26 in Annapolis. And we wrapped the show by chatting with Dr. Nick Elam-the man responsible for the "Elam Ending," which has been wonderful in The Basketball Tournament (and this year's NBA All-Star Game)-what does he think about MLB's extra inning plan?

On the latest episode of the show, Dr. Nick Elam, creator of the Elam Ending joins host Luke Winstel to discuss his story and innovative concept revolutionizing the game of basketball! Bio (from thetournament.com): Dr. Nick Elam is a professor at Ball State University. "He is a die-hard basketball fan who set his sights set on solving one of his biggest problems in basketball – those last few minutes that seem to take hours because of intentional fouls. The “Elam Ending” aims to revolutionize basketball by eliminating end-of-game fouling all together and keeping the quality of play consistent throughout the entire game. Here’s how the Elam Ending works: Eliminate the clock from crunch time (under three-minute timeout in the NBA and under four-minute timeout in college) and establish a new target score by adding seven points to the leading team’s score. Resume the game and first team to reach the target score wins. For example, Team A leads Team B 70-65 at the under four-minute timeout. The clock then disappears and the first team to reach the new target score of 77 wins. This eliminates the perceived advantage of fouling to stop the clock and allows for teams to make a comeback using hard-nosed defense and efficient offense rather than numerous fouls and prayers for missed free throws." Dr. Nick Elam is a Ball State professor focusing on educational leadership. But if you watched the NBA All-Star game this season you may have heard or seen his namesake trending on Twitter. The Elam Ending, a term coined by The Basketball Tournament, an annual $2 million prized basketball tournament on ESPN, is a way to make the ending of a game more competitive as opposed to intentional fouling to try and drag out the clock and hope the other team misses free throws. In this episode of the SII podcast, Dr. Elam shares the 15 year journey of his idea to improve the game of basketball and where he thinks it will go from here. Host Travis Smith asks Dr. Elam's opinions on new trends in innovating sports, such as NASCAR's stage formula and the XFL's new kickoff and extra point formats.

We are joined by Dr. Nick Elam, who created the Elam Ending in order to eliminate intentional fouling in basketball and liven up the games final minutes. Instead of playing until the clock hits zero, teams will play until the clock hits a different time-four minutes left in a college game, three in the NBA - and then the clock shuts off. Seven is added to the leading team's score, and that total becomes the target score - once either team reaches or surpasses that total, the game is over. Dr. Elam discusses in detail about the Elam Ending, how he came up with the idea, feedback he's received, and more.

Imagine sitting in your dorm room, watching the last few minutes of a basketball game take half an hour to play. There’s got to be a better way to do this, you think. But what? Well, Nick Elam has the answer: The Elam Ending. A middle school principal from Ohio, Elam has come up with a revolutionary (and brilliant) way to end basketball games. It involves turning the clock off, playing to a target score and it’s awesome. The Elam Ending will make its debut at TBT’s Jamboree this June in Philadelphia and, as ESPN’s Zach Lowe reports, the NBA (and the world) will be watching. Dan Friel talks to Nick about the idea, where it came from, why it works, and what he’s looking forward to seeing when the Jamboree comes around.
