Sports journalist Joe Posnanski is a diehard baseball fan, but deep down, he knows what Americans really love: football on Sundays.

It's time for one of our favorite AMDG traditions: Our annual Christmas draft. It's an idea we stole outright from the sportswriter Joe Posnanski's podcast, so a tip of the Santa hat to him. For newcomers, this is how a Christmas draft works: First, host Mike Jordan Laskey picks a Christmas related category. This year, it's Christmas objects. Some guests and Mike take turns selecting their favorite individual members of that category. It's like a draft that the NFL or NBA sponsors. Once someone makes a specific pick, that option is off the board for everyone else. We do three rounds. This year, we two guests: Sister Bethany Welch, SSJ, and Father Marty Ngo, SJ. A nun, a priest, and a father of three walk into a podcast… the jokes just write themselves. We asked Bethany and Marty to introduce themselves at the top of the show, so I won't say too much about them. But we think you'll see why we invited them – they're two people who are both deeply spiritual, immensely creative and just joys to be around. We're grateful for their vocations. And we're grateful to all you out there in AMDG land for spending some of your busy holiday season with us. All of us here at the Jesuit Conference wish you a very merry Christmas and a blessed 2025. Sister Bethany Welch, SSJ: https://jesuitmedialab.org/how-this-catholic-sister-used-art-to-prepare-for-taking-vows/ Fr. The front window has been well decorated by mom and dad, the Polar Expresses have been ordered, and it is officially Holiday Season. So, what books are you going to buy for your friends and families? Well, let us tell you: - "James," by Percival Everett, Hannah's pick for book of the year (even if it didn't win the Booker). - "Orbital," by Samantha Harvey, which Sam somehow hasn't read yet, but is about astronauts and what it's like to be human (also, it's "James S A Corey," the fake name of two guys who wrote the Expanse series, not "S A Andrews" who doesn't seem to be a person). - "Lazarus Man," by Richard Price, which should be big, by all rights, but who knows? Seems like a good book for literary dudes. - "The Serviceberry," by Robin Wall Kimmerer, which is great for the right open-minded reader. They have to be anti-capitalist, probably. - "The Backyard Bird Chronicles," by Amy Tan, who is very much alive despite having been in a band with Stephen King in the 1990s, we think. We also use the word "flexi-bound" in describing this book. - "The Boston Globe Story of the Celtics," by Chad Finn, who really lucked out with the Cs winning the championship just as he was finishing up. - "Why We Love Football," by Joe Posnanski, a follow-up to "The Baseball 100," which is easily digestible and fits with the attention spans of teenaged boys. - "Be Ready When the Luck Happens," by Ina Garten, a memoir by the super-famous chef, who Sam has never encountered in any way for some reason. This involves a sidebar on Martha Stewart. - "Heartbreak Is the National Anthem," by Rob Sheffield, which is shaping up to be one of the first important examinations of what Taylor Swift means for the future of popular music. - "Small Things Like These," by Claire Keegan, which is going to be even huger, now that there's a movie. - "Say Nothing," by Patrick Radden Keefe, which is going to be even huger, now that there's a limited series. - "Wicked," by Gregory Maguire, which is going to be even huger, now that there's a movie, and may get you to buy others of his books, which will likely disappoint you. - "The Women," by Kristen Hannah, which is emerging as maybe Hannah's most important book, dealing with the Vietnam War as it does and speaking to women about that time in a unique way. - "Impossible Creatures," by Katherine Rundell, which is emerging as the best book for middle schoolers of the season.

I am a huge sports fan, and both the college football season and the NFL season are in full swing. Sports-wise, this is one of my favorite times of the year, and our guest today Joe Posnanski has written a book for all lovers of the game called Why We Love Football: A History in 100 Moments that you definitely won't want to miss. Joe chose 100 moments because of the 100 yards in a football field, and talks to us today about how on earth he chose just 100 moments out of the hundreds and even thousands he could have chosen. He talks about what anecdote was most fun to write about, a player and a play that epitomizes football to him, why football matters to society and culture, and yes, even Taylor Swift. We also brought up some of my childhood memories with the Kansas City Chiefs, and it left me feeling very nostalgic. The book is out September 17, and follows Joe's books The Baseball 100 and also Why We Love Baseball: A History in 50 Moments. Joe talks about simultaneously loving both college and pro football, and how you can also love multiple sports, just like he loves football and baseball, which he writes in the book is like living a double life. Joe is a former senior columnist for Sports Illustrated and columnist for The Kansas City Star and currently writes for his personal blog JoeBlogs. He's one of the most well-respected sportswriters in the game and has written a number of other books in addition to the three already mentioned. In both 2002 and 2005, Joe was named the best sports columnist in America by the Associated Press Sports Editors, and has won numerous other awards for his work, including Sports Emmy Awards in both 2014 and 2016 as part of NBC's Olympics coverage. He hosts his own weekly podcast, “The PosCast,” and he's just a great guy. Trust me—if you weren't already excited about football season being back, you certainly will be after this chat and this book. Take a listen. Why We Love Football: A History in 100 Moments by Joe Posnanski
In his new book, "Why We Love Football: A History In 100 Moments," bestselling sportswriter Joe Posnanski tells stories that range from the sport's quirkiest moments to its most historic. He says Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is "unlike anybody we've ever seen."
Posnanski breaks down the biggest upsets, outrageous plays, and outstanding players to show why — despite its many faults — each fall millions turn back to football as one of this nation's true pastimes.

I’ve been listening to Joe’s podcast (the Poscast) and reading his books for years, and I’d originally reached out to him, hoping to get him on to discuss Brittle Innings, a Hugo-nominee but also a baseball book. Unfortunately, he didn’t have the bandwidth for extracurricular reading, but he had time to do a podcast with … Continue reading "Why We Love Baseball (and Football), with Joe Posnanski"

I was asked not too long ago if I would like to interview a New York Best Selling Author, I wasn't sure how I could work it into British Baseball, but I didn't have to, but there are elements of British Baseball in Joe's book and it even has a segment dedicated to it, sounded like a fun idea and having had the chance to interview writers in the past, I found them and their subjects extremely fascinating. Now I know im now Steve Klein of Reading the Game, but I really enjoyed my time talking with Joe about the Negro Leagues, the time he has spent in the UK and the sports he ha covered, the MLB London Series and of course, his new book "Why We Love Baseball", his knowledge of the british game and how they got to be included in his 7th publication. its a fun read, great segments and worth picking up if you love your baseball books, it could even make a great gift for the baseball fan in your life. here are the links below. https://linktr.ee/WhyWeLoveBaseballUK
