Join me Jason LaChance host of the Knockin' Doorz Down podcast, certified addiction recovery coach, and mental health advocate for my sit down with special guest Scott Strode the Founder and Executive Director of Phoenix Multisport, Inc., a non-profit organization based in Boulder, CO. Launched in 2007, the organization offers an innovative recovery model that fosters a sober active community to those recovering from alcohol or drug addiction and those who choose to live a sober life. Scott and I converse about the origins of the Phoenix, where his substance use and addiction took off, and how important community and being of service to others is in his recovery and life. We answer the following questions. Where do you think your substance use was generated from? How did endurance sports help you in your recovery? What tips and tools do you have for positive self-care? What was your moment of clarity on the path to recovery? Do you think there's still a stigma around people asking for help? We finish our conversation with fun random questions and Scott finishes with final thoughts. This is Scott Strode Knockin' Doorz Down. Today Michael Walsh speaks with Ben Cort, author of Weed, Inc. Ben is a Jr Fellow at the University of Florida inside of their drug policy institute, a board member for NALGAP (National Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender treatment providers and their allies), a Board member at SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana) and faculty at numerous institutes. He is a published author (Weed, Inc., HCI/Simon and Schuster 2017). In November of 2019 Ben moved from a consulting role with the Foundry Steamboat Springs to CEO. When not working or hanging out with his wife and three kids Ben can be found chasing trout with his fly rod or buried deep in a book. Ben's passion for recovery, prevention and harm reduction comes from his own struggle with substance abuse. Sober since 6/15/96, Ben has been a part of the recovery movement in almost every way imaginable; from a recipient to a provider to a spokesperson. In 2007, Ben helped start the Colorado based nonprofit, Phoenix Multisport, now “The Phoenix”. Ben was instrumental in building this organization that has received frequent national recognition for their innovative approach to building sober communities around sport and healthy activities. In 2012, Cort joined the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) where he ran the marketing, business development and admissions departments for their substance abuse treatment services known as CeDAR. He left that role in 2017 to consult inside of the treatment community, athletics and organized labor. Throughout this time Ben has remained active in the discussion around marijuana, assisting several states efforts to hold back Big Marijuana and always advocating for recovery. These efforts keep him close to the national discussion and make him a frequent guest in the media.
This community talk is from October 2020 with Ben Cort as he shares about conflicting values in the industry. He also has a ted talk shared below: "In 2012, Colorado legalized cannabis and kickstarted a multibillion dollar industry with every product imaginable -brownies, gummy bears, granola bars, even lube! But to say that we've “legalized cannabis” is mistaken - we've commercialized THC. In this fascinating talk, expert Ben Cort examines the impacts of this growing new industry on everything from policing & arrest rates to LGBTQ issues. Sober since 1996, Ben Cort has seen the devastation that substance abuse can bring first hand as well as the joy that is recovery. He spent the last 10 years inside nonprofit drug treatment and education programs like Phoenix Multisport, Stout Street Foundation, and The University of Colorado Hospital. He is the author of Weed, INC., a professional speaker, and a frequent guest in the media. Ben is a husband, father of three, and an avid sportsman. He enjoys fly fishing, hunting, mountaineering, and bike racing. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I met Emily Holland in October 2019. She interviewed me about my entrepreneurial journey on her Stokecast Podcast. Toward the end of the interview, we talked about my sobriety journey and I did what lots of podcasters pull on other podcasters - I turned one of her questions back on her. I asked her if there was anything in her life that she felt that she wanted to let go of. She replied, "I'm in the process of thinking about letting go of alcohol. I just haven't done all the thinking I want to around it yet." Or something very close! The point is that she was on the verge of starting the journey that has taken her life in a new direction. Sobriety. Emily is an emerging thought leader in the world of alcohol and sobriety. She embarked on her sober journey over a year ago. In fact, she hit the one year milestone just a few days ago and wrote a powerful blog with 9 powerful takeaways. Emily is a very deep thinker. She is not taking her sobriety journey lightly. She has become so passionate about what sobriety has brought to her life, how much it has helped her grow, that she decided to start a new venture, a podcast called Nature Untold. Her goal is to normalize and destigmatize the discussion around sobriety, addiction, and recovery in the outdoor community and industry. And she is doing just that! Notables: The "Bristle" Trigger: What is bugging you? What is it time to examine? Prioritizing Partying: Why this becomes important and when it's time to shift priorities Question asked in therapy: "Have you grieved the loss of alcohol?" Drinking is a relationship that brings you comfort or fills a void of some sort. It makes sense that the loss of it needs to be grieved. Euphoric recall: Nostalgia for the memories & community that were part of one's drinking life She believes there is a line between calling oneself an alcoholic and recognizing drinking isn't a positive part of one's lives and it's time to stop. The habit of drinking: we riff a bit on the example used in the book "Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg Destigmatizing sobriety: It starts with having open conversations. Replace the drinking addiction with something else like exercise or adventure 3 things that were key to Emily's decision to stop drinking: 1) Therapy, 2) Someone who loves you unconditionally and wants to support the changes you decide to make, 3) COVID Best gateway (drug

Organizing for Change Podcast - Episode 17 Show Notes Goal: “to equip coalitions, organizations, and individuals to bring change to their community” Host, Amanda Decker joins Ben Cort from Cort Consulting. Ben has been part of the recovery movement in almost every way imaginable from a recipient of services to a spokesperson to a respected professional inside of the treatment industry. Sober since 6/15/96 he has seen the devastation that substance use disorder can bring first hand as well as the joy that is recovery. Ben began his career inside of Human Resources and was a Director at an S&P 500 firm by 27. He left that position to help start the Colorado based non-profit Phoenix Multisport, an organization that provides pro-social activities that are primarily athletic in nature to those living sober lives. As an original Board member and the first full-time employee Ben was instrumental in building an organization that still receives frequent national attention for its innovative approach to fighting addiction through sport and the community that surrounds sport. In May of 2012, he left Phoenix Multisport to join the opposition campaign for Amendment 64, the constitutional amendment that would ultimately allow for the commercialization of marijuana in Colorado. Following that campaign Cort joined the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) where he ran marketing, business development and admissions for their substance abuse treatment service line known as CeDAR. He left that role in January 2017. Throughout his time with UCH Ben remained active in the discussion around marijuana, assisting several states in their efforts to hold back Big Marijuana and always advocating for recovery. These efforts kept him close to the national discussion and made him a frequent guest in the media. Ben has earned a reputation as being pro-logic and recovery rather than anti anything. His direct and honest approach has made him a sought after speaker and respected voice in this national conversation. If you’ve been sober for 48 hours, you can join Phoenix Multisport, a network of gyms that just won praise from the Trump administration for fighting opioid addiction. Then, Mallory Pugh and Lindsey Horan were high school soccer stars in Colorado. Now they’re back as members of the U.S. national team who hope to compete in the 2019 World Cup. And, Colorado’s been devastated by flash floods in the past. An author who has chronicled that history says Colorado’s population boom could increase the loss of life and property next time. Plus, Colorado Springs poet Janice Gould’s father was transgender but couldn’t embrace it until late in life. Gould weaves that sadness into her new collection.
Dana Smith from Phoenix Multisport tells her personal story of addiction and the value of physical fitness in aiding her recovery. Together with Mark McIntosh of A Stronger Cord, they describe how Phoenix Multisport provides a safe environment for recovering addicts, and also helps widen their everyday associations with others wanting to remain free from addiction. Meet Scott Strode the founder and visionary of Phoenix Multisport, a community for individuals who are recovering from substance use disorder and those who choose to live sober. Scott was a trauma survivor from early in his life. He had his first drink at 11, started doing cocaine at 15, and acted out every which way -- until one day a friend encouraged him to go to the local boxing gym and give it a try. The gym, the environment, the recovering addicts who had redefined themselves as sober athletes, lit a fire in him. It gave him the strength to quit drugs and alcohol, and over time, kindled the vision for Phoenix Multisport. Scott is now over 20 years sober and has made it his life's mission to help others who struggle with substance use disorder. I am personally very grateful for the work that Scott does because I have my own history of alcohol abuse and I believe in the power of what he is doing. But you don’t need to be a recovering alcoholic or drug addict to relate to this interview. We all carry shame on some level, sometimes for things we did when we were 15 years old or things we did last week. The underlying point is that at certain times in our lives, we may find ourselves in need of change. Scott has incredible insight, compassion and wisdom for people who want to change their lives.
Guest: Lauren Slivinski, non-profit manager For today’s show, I’m joined by Lauren Slivinski, manager of the Orange County chapter of Phoenix Multisport, a non-profit that helps people discover healthy, fulfilling sober lives through activity and community. Addiction affects millions of people and has the power to destroy lives and relationships. Anyone suffering from an addiction knows just how hard it is to quit and needs a place where they can feel comfortable talking about what they’re going through with people who have gone through similar experiences. I have no formal education on the subject and I do not consider myself an expert on addiction but I have struggled with alcohol so I will speak from my experience. Should you need help I would recommend seeking professional counseling or advice. When I was in the middle of my addiction I didn’t have any hope that I would ever get out. I was so caught up in the moment and seeing a future for myself was impossible. Many nights were a blur as I would drink until I blacked out and that cycle went on for a long time. My decisions finally caught up to me and I got in big trouble for my drinking, if you would like the specifics I detail them in the podcast. Through family support, a lot of counselling and learning I have returned to a sober life that is full of promise and hope. Along the way there were so many different life lessons but I have narrowed it down to 3 things that have been paramount in my recovery. Support - Having the support of my friends and family shows me that there are other people that care about my decisions and my quality of life. If there are people out there that care about me and my life, then why shouldn’t I? Purpose – Having a reason to wake up each morning and be productive helped me to focus on the future and know that there are certain things I need to achieve in order to maintain my purpose. For me that purpose was my small business. When I became the owner of something it forced me to make better choices so I could be successful. Control - Having control of my choices and surroundings were very important to me. I actually learned this lesson in the gym. When I started working out I realized I could control the way my body looked. If I showed up to the gym on a regular basis and put in the work, I started to change. I took what I was learning how to with my body in the gym and applied it to my everyday life. I have physical control of my actions and with that I can choose to stay home instead of go out to the bar or liquor store. I didn’t know it at the time but looking back I believe these three things we paramount in my recovery and I think the 3rd one was most important. When I saw how much I could change my body it gave me a feeling of control, my good choices equaled a better life and the physical reaction that happens when I exercised felt really good! This feeling replaced what was missing from my days of drinking and I have been sober for over 3 years now! On this episode of Under Ten Fitness we talk to Phoenix Multisport which is an organization that exists to offer those who are struggling with addiction a safe place to participate in physical activities. The following is their mission statement: “Phoenix Multisport fosters a supportive, physically active community for individuals who are recovering from a substance use disorder and those who choose to live sober. Through pursuits such as climbing, hiking, running, strength training, yoga, road/mountain biking, socials and other activities, we seek to help our members develop and maintain the emotional strength they need to stay sober.” I want to thank Todd, Kaley and Jeff for coming on the show and sharing their amazing stories of recovery that offer hope. Hope that no matter what you’re going through you can change and you can get your life back. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, or has in the past, Phoenix Multisport is always accepting new participants and you can find more information here: Phoenix Multisport Website Phoenix Multisport Instagram Phoenix Multisport Facebook
