We want to hear from you! Send us a question or comment. Some of the information in this episode was taken from my good friend Ben Cort, author of "Weed, Inc."  If you want to learn more from him, please reference his Ted Talks:https://www.ted.com/talks/ben_cort_what_commercialization_is_doing_to_cannabisThe modern marijuana landscape has undergone a radical transformation that few people fully understand. What was once a relatively mild substance with THC concentrations of 0.5-1% has evolved into a highly potent drug containing 15-30% THC in plant form and up to a staggering 90% in concentrates. This isn't your grandparents' weed - it's a completely different substance with serious health implications. As competition drives dispensaries to create increasingly potent products, we're witnessing a marketplace-driven acceleration of THC delivery with minimal regulation. Unlike alcohol, which faces strict concentration limits and ingredient oversight, marijuana cultivation practices often include concerning chemicals and pesticides that would never be permitted in other consumable products. The result? A substance that's potentially more dangerous than many realize. The health consequences are troubling. Recovery from marijuana addiction now takes longer than recovery from substances like methamphetamine or fentanyl, with normal cognitive and memory function potentially impaired for 60-90 days after cessation. Young chronic users face significantly higher risks of psychiatric issues including THC-induced psychosis. Perhaps most alarming is Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS), a painful condition causing violent vomiting that affects up to 30% of chronic users and can only be treated through complete abstinence. What makes marijuana addiction particularly challenging is its gradual progression, allowing users to easily deny the connection between their use and life problems. If you're concerned about a loved one who uses marijuana heavily, especially if they began at a young age, understanding these modern realities is crucial. Ben Cort has been sober since 1996 and has been part of the recovery movement in almost every way imaginable; from a recipient to a provider to a spokesperson. He joined the field professionally in 2007 working inside of nonprofits, treatment programs and consulting to athletics and organized labor. Highlighted in his book, Weed, Inc.: The Truth About the Pot Lobby, THC, and the Commercial Marijuana Industry, and his TED talk “Surprising Truths about Legalizing Cannabis” Ben has remained active in the discussion around marijuana, assisting several states efforts to hold back Big Marijuana and always advocating for recovery. His reputation as being pro-logic and recovery oriented rather than anti anything, and his widely adopted curriculum on ethical treatment and practices has garnered national recognition. He is utilized by the likes of NFL, and NCAA programs to determine appropriate treatment for their athletes, coaches and their families as well as develop recovery oriented policies. Today on the show we discuss: Why Ben has been advocating against legalization of marijuana, why parents should be taking cannabis seriously, why more people are going to rehab for cannabis addiction, steps parents can take if their kid is struggling with cannabis addiction, what Ben would do if he was in charge of changing things, why cannabis is destroying peoples lives and more. ⚠ WELLNESS DISCLAIMER ⚠ Please be advised; the topics related to mental health in my content are for informational, discussion, and entertainment purposes only. It was unfathomable.” Ben Cort is the CEO of the Foundry Treatment Center and author of “Weed, Inc.: The Truth About the Pot Lobby, THC, and the Commercial Marijuana Industry.” “If one pictures their body as the cannabis plant, originally THC was about the size of our big toe,” says Cort. “By the mid-2000s, [it] was about up to our knee, and now we have THC-available products that are past our eyes.” Cort is now fighting back against a multi-billion-dollar industry that he says turned a once natural, relatively harmless plant into a highly addictive, psychosis-inducing narcotic. “There are pesticides that we find regularly inside of cannabis plants that are not safe for topical animal use, and this is being inhaled by human beings,” says Cort. A decade after the first states legalized marijuana for recreational use, it's become a thriving industry. Today, recreational use is allowed in 19 states plus Washington, D.C., with another five states voting on legalization in November. A total of 37 states allow the medical use of marijuana. Clearly, acceptability is on the rise. At the same time, cannabis has gotten much, much more potent, with THC levels now as high as 100 percent in some products, compared to less than 2 percent for most weed smoked in the 1960s. We speak with Ben Cort, author of “Weed, Inc.: The Truth About the Pot Lobby, THC, and the Commercial Marijuana Industry.” He explains how we've been down this road before, with Big Marijuana being no different from Big Tobacco and Big Pharma. Next, in America Q&A, we ask: If you could give President Joe Biden one piece of advice, what would it be? Then we look at marijuana's medical impact. Is it the dream drug it was billed as, or are there unintended side effects? Dr. Ken Finn, president of the American Board of Pain Medicine, and co-Vice President of the International Academy on the Science and Impacts of Cannabis (IASIC), has some surprising answers. Finally, in our second America Q&A, we ask: What's your concept of a fruitful day? ⭕️Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

Illegal Drug Overdose Deaths Rise - How Addiction is Killing Us The latest from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is that “more than 96,000 drug overdose deaths” were reported from March 2020 to March 2021. This statistic means that Drug overdose deaths have increased nearly 30% compared to 2019.  Addiction Medicine Specialist Dr. Trent Hall of Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center calls it a “collision of health crises.” It appears that there is a link between the COVID Pandemic and U.S. drug overdose deaths. It's an easy, simple reason. We like simple; we like easy. “Take a pill and call me in the morning” is a good remedy. In this One-On-One, I speak with the author of “Weed, Inc. A recent Scientific American article entitled Is “Cannabis Good or Bad for Mental Health?” suggested that if you think you understand cannabis and its impact on our well-being, you probably don’t. With over 500 chemical constituents, interacting a different doses and ingested by different means, there are endless permutations of complexity for the ways cannabis can impact our emotional health. We can’t slap one label on it as either “all helpful” or “all harmful” when it comes to the impact on depression, anxiety, trauma and psychosis. Cannabis and all of the spin-off substances continue to evolve faster than rigorous science can keep up. The truth is — at the level of randomized control trials — we know very little. for more information on this and other Hope Illuminated episodes go to https://www.sallyspencerthomas.com/hope-illuminated-podcast/37

COMMENT:As we edge ever closer to our referendum next year on cannabis, the debate's heating up.That's a good thing. We need to be as well informed as we possibly can before we vote. It's easy to come at these issues from whatever your personal experiences or interests are.But part of living in a democratic society is being able to look at debate from all sides. At the moment with the legalise cannabis debate, I tend to come at it from my standpoint as a parent. But one angle which pricked my interest this week was that of its move into the hands of big corporates - and with that, it's increased potency. If we look to overseas examples, which we should, a Colorado native and author of the book "Weed, Inc", Ben Cort has been shedding some light on what's happened in his hometown.Colorado legalised cannabis in 2012. Since then, commercial interests have taken over sales and they're making millions. Not only that, the product's been hijacked. The 'natural plant' as cannabis enthusiasts from the 1970s may've called it, is no longer just a plant. It's concentrated and distilled into edibles, eye drops, gum, lollies, nasal sprays, ice cream - whatever you can think of now contains THC – which is the active ingredient in marijuana. The part that gets you high.Cort says it's so dramatically more potent now than it was back then. Where plants of the 70s may've contained about 4 per cent THC, the levels now are more like 42 per cent. Why? Because it's now being grown in glasshouses and commercial production facilities, with pesticides, fertilisers and metals added to it.In his TED talk, Cort cites a mate of his who quit working in one of the cannabis growing facilities due to his fears about the amount of chemicals he was around. Their employers were asking them to wear Hazmat suits – that's how much chemical spraying was going onto these plants. So with the increase in THC comes of course the increase in addiction. The key factors in terms of addiction are age of onset, frequency of use, and potency. It's said that adolescents who take up cannabis these days have a 50 per cent chance of getting addicted. It used to be around 17 per cent. The arguments against – that it's a health issue and not a criminal one – I hear that. But don't we create a bigger health issue for ourselves than we already have with those other legalised corporatised addictive drugs such as tobacco and alcohol? They're legal: look how that turned out.Is this what we really want for our country?A more potent drug than ever before, and in the hands of corporate giants milking it for every cent?I wouldn't have thought so.

Organizing for Change Podcast - Episode 17 Show Notes Goal: “to equip coalitions, organizations, and individuals to bring change to their community”   Host, Amanda Decker joins Ben Cort from Cort Consulting. Ben has been part of the recovery movement in almost every way imaginable from a recipient of services to a spokesperson to a respected professional inside of the treatment industry. Sober since 6/15/96 he has seen the devastation that substance use disorder can bring first hand as well as the joy that is recovery.   Ben began his career inside of Human Resources and was a Director at an S&P 500 firm by 27. He left that position to help start the Colorado based non-profit Phoenix Multisport, an organization that provides pro-social activities that are primarily athletic in nature to those living sober lives.   As an original Board member and the first full-time employee Ben was instrumental in building an organization that still receives frequent national attention for its innovative approach to fighting addiction through sport and the community that surrounds sport.   In May of 2012, he left Phoenix Multisport to join the opposition campaign for Amendment 64, the constitutional amendment that would ultimately allow for the commercialization of marijuana in Colorado. Following that campaign Cort joined the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) where he ran marketing, business development and admissions for their substance abuse treatment service line known as CeDAR. He left that role in January 2017.   Throughout his time with UCH Ben remained active in the discussion around marijuana, assisting several states in their efforts to hold back Big Marijuana and always advocating for recovery. These efforts kept him close to the national discussion and made him a frequent guest in the media. Ben has earned a reputation as being pro-logic and recovery rather than anti anything.   His direct and honest approach has made him a sought after speaker and respected voice in this national conversation.   Welcome to Episode 017 of the Podcast:   Guest: Ben Cort, CEO - Cort Consulting   Cort Consulting Website: https://www.cortconsult.com/   Organizing for Change Website: https://organizing4change.podbean.com/   Organizing for Change Twitter: @organizing4chng   Insights from This Episode:   Big "Marijuana, Tobacco, Alcohol, Pharma" targets those strugling with a substance use disorder.
