Here we are in the last week of 2023! Before entering into a new year, there are some things we should rid ourselves of in order to receive what God has for us in 2024. As we wrap up 2023, there are some things worth examining before the new year. This week we are challenged with self-reflection. Romans 12:1–2 helps us understand the standard of holiness that the Lord is pleased with as we grow into our newly evolved selves through Christ Jesus. In 2024, our #1 goal should be becoming a living sacrifice for the Lord. “In 2009, when he was twenty years old, Joshua Bennett was invited to perform a spoken word poem for Barack and Michelle Obama, at the same White House "Poetry Jam" where Lin-Manuel Miranda declaimed the opening bars of a work-in-progress that would soon revolutionize American theater. That meeting is but one among many in the trajectory of Bennett's young life, as he rode the cresting wave of spoken word through the 2010s.” In his newest book Spoken Word: A Cultural History (March 28, 2023), Bennett unpacks the roots of spoken word poetry, the Black Arts movement, and the prominence of poetry and song in Black education. He joins Tavis to discuss.

Welcome to Cordova, Alaska, "the crossroads of Alaska!" The town is located in southern Alaska on Orca Inlet. The town was first claimed by Spanish explorers in 1790 and named Puerto Cordova. Spain's claim was short-lived. By 1799, Russia had claimed Alaska, which it then sold to the US in 1867. Cordova retained it's Spanish name when it was reorganized in 1906 (although Peurto was dropped). It was purchased by Michael James Heney to build a terminus for a railroad in the area after high grade copper was discovered nearby. The town was once known as the" Razor Clam Capital of the World." Between 1916 and the last 1950s, the annual harvest reached up to 3.5 million pounds. Harvesting declined in the late 1950s due to overharvesting and a large die-off. The industry was destroyed in 1964 by the Good Friday Earthquake, the strongest earthquake ever recorded in North America and second strongest in the world. The town has never been connected by road to the rest of Alaska, and with the destruction of the railway, is not connected at all by land. The town can only be accessed by boat or plane. We home you enjoy our trip to Cordova!

Ivy took a graduate program in development studies in Africa after working for a corporate event planning company. She likes to describe her former job as “babysitting adults in cool places.” She eventually found herself aligning with several aspects of the job including the travel and gluttonous nature of the scene. After Ivy’s mom was diagnosed with cancer--she passed only two weeks later--she found her life and identity were incredibly shaken. Ivy found her way to non-profit work and South Africa. She did her thesis project in a domestic abuse shelter in the Cape Flats, an apartheid relocation area in Cape Town. It was here that she had experiences that “sewed the seeds” for Find Your Power including a women’s empowerment tour that allowed her to shadow a young woman in order to pay her Lobola, or bride price, to her parents. She turned down a promotion in higher education and took a Massive Open Online course in Social Entrepreneurship. She organized a team of fifty people of around the idea of women’s empowerment and the course drove her to write a business plan. Ivy learned some valuable lessons about success and failure. She says crowdfunding takes an immense amount of time. She also says crowdfunding is difficult without a lot of media attention or a drive to ask people for money. Another key takeaway from our discussion is her emphasis on needs-based assessments as the foundation of her work before creating an app or resource library. Ivy’s largest event of the year Poetry Jam is coming up at Shindig in Minneapolis on Give to the Max Day. You can also find out more on Find Your Power’s Facebook Page. Are you loving the podcast? #ReclaimEDM Podcast 02 features unique soulful deep-house tracks from around the world, mixed live by DJ nomsta. (www.nomsta.net), featuring tracks by Chewy Rubs, Dubble D presents Moodymanc, Johannes Albert, Vincenzo, Bassart, Michael Mayer, Joe Goddard, MANTU, Salif Keita x Megablast, KERINNIS, Anja Schneider, La Fleur, Gezender and L Cio. The mix starts with the tempo of 116 bpm, as most upbeat funk tracks would similarly be, opening with "Get Down" a remix of the 1978 Gene Chandler song by disco-nu-disco re-editor/producer Chewy Rubs whose most recent release was on Yam Who's Midnight Riot label, I let the funk flow keeping all the tracks strictly at 116 bpm for a steady deepburn groove. Mixing by looping in the claps and vocal one shot of 2007 old-but-gold 20:20 Vision release of "Wiggle" by Manchester jazz drummer house producer Moodymanc aka Dubble D, the track has this vintage deep house, perfect to follow with more of the 80s-electro Chicago feeling by Johannes Albert's Hip Edits of the 1987 Mickey Oliver song "Never Let Go" featuring the vocals of Shanna Jay with updated kicks and bassline. 20-something years old Italian Corrado Bucci is a bit of a wonder child/posterboy of the jazzy-soulful house circles with his sophisticated productions seeing pressings from top quality labels like Compost, Defected, Local Talk and BBE Music, who also does A&R and scouting now for Japanese label Rebirth Records where he signed his debut to in 2012. Soulful deep house Berliner Vincenzo gave an uplifting remix to Bucci's "Sumthin'" which is a great filler to bridge to Dortmund/Berlin label Raving Society's dubby synthy lush electro release of "Innstruments" by fellow German Bassart. Indie-electro band Hot Chip's member and vocalist Joe Goddard has been putting out solo material since around 2009 and has formed a bit of a production partnership with Kompakt Records' co-owner and veteran Michael Mayer, so it's not surprising to see him providing a remix to Goddard's latest release on Domino "Children". I had to play a cheeky bootleg of Malinese "Golden Voice of Africa" Salif Keita's ode to women and feminism in Africa, "Moussolou", which also features female Malinese singer Oumou Sangare. Osunlade did an official Yoruba Soul mix of the song but it has a more organic feel although it's till a deep house track, I like the club feel of Megablast's re-edit which is really more like a remix. A bit of trivia about "Wassoulou sound" of Mali - since their independence in the 60's, the Wassoulou region of Mali has produced many strong female musicians creating new music based on their traditional dances and rhythms combined with the djembe drums and a harp-like instrument invented by local youths during this period called the kamalengoni, which gave birth to music unique to Wassoulou that communicates a sense of youthful rebellion and freedom. 2nd half of the mix goes deeper into deeper house and quite accidentally stringing a list of Berlin based artists together. I'm very excited about Berlin-based Get Physical artist MANTU aka Manuel Overbeck who has started his own label Raving Society and has signed some outstanding releases of late. His very own "Underwater Solution" has been described as melancholic but I think it's just the deep jazzy chords and bassline doing its thing. I also got sent a promo EP that includes a dreamy spoken word deep house number "Poetry Jam" by another Berlin producer Kerinnis. Up next, is "Secret Escapes" by yet another Berliner but a veteran, Anja Schneider from her first album after 9 years on her new label SoUS after leaving Mobilee the label she found more than a decade ago. La Fluer is a Swedish-now-living-in Berlin and has this new deep tech house track "Femton" out on the legendary club-label Watergate where he is also one of the resident DJs. The track was also featured in their Nov 2017 Watergate XV compilation. To finish, a remix of "Duhka" by a Brazilian producer L Cio for another Brazilian Gezender, who said that the track was inspired by zen music, mantras and Buddhist songs and was trying to "bring it to sensibile and sensory techno with spiritual, philosophical and political questions". Now, that's what I called deep. Tracklist / Chewy Rubs - Get Down - Chewy Rubs Extendedit Dubble D presents Moodymanc - Wriggle - Original Mix Johannes Albert / Hip Edits - Never Throw - Re-edit of Mickey Oliver & Shanna Jay's Never Let Go Corrado Bucci - Sumthin´ - Vincenzo Remix Bassart - Innstruments - Original Mix Joe Goddard - Children - Michael Mayer Remix Salif Keita - Moussolou - Megablast unofficial Remix MANTU - Underwater Solution KERINNIS - Poetry Jam Anja Schneider - Secret Escapes - Original Mix La Fleur - Femton - Original Mix Gezender - Duhkha - L_Cio Remix The mix is available on all major music social platforms.
