POPULARITY
We've all heard of it, the 'Let Them Theory' has taken the world by storm. Popularised by Mel Robins, the simple phrase has transformed peoples lives as they learn that it's okay that you can't control other people, only your own reaction. Today I again chat to my wise friend, Jemma (host of The Psychology Of Your 20s) about why everyone is so obsessed with the phrase, what it encapsulates and why it is still flawed.
A dubstep legend roars back. When dubstep ruled the roost in the late '00s, electronic music had no shortage of icons and spinoff variants to rally around. But one rumble from Bristol stood out: the Purple sound. Popularised by Joker, AKA Liam Mclean, with Guido and Gemmy in support, it hit like a beam of bright light flooding through the basement dank. When America cottoned onto bass quakes in the next decade, Mclean's taste for chiptune-coded synths and maximum intensity kept his vision alive at arena level, even while he retreated from view as an actively touring performer. In 2023, "Tears," a collaboration with Skrillex and Sleepnet, helped remind the world just how much Joker's juddering sound could put us in a headlock. True to form, this year's gargantuan "Juggernaut"—Mclean's first solo single in six years—crashes through the speakers with as much glorious crunch as earlier classics like 2009's "Purple City." Mclean has kept busy in the studio applying his perfectionist streak as a producer and engineer to many sound system anthems, which means his influence is never far from a dance floor being turned inside out. The fact that Joker had never laid down an RA Podcast before was, being honest, a blemish in our copybook. RA.962 fixes that in style. @jokerkapsize Read more at ra.co/podcast/962

On this episode of Slice of Pi Podcasts, Bobby & Ian discuss the Ruskington Horror. From footsteps heard in the middle of the night to unexplained lights seen in abandoned buildings - Lincolnshire has its fair share of paranormal goings on.But, few have left their mark quite like the ominously titled "Ruskington Horror".Popularised by Richard Madeley, who did a TV programme on the terror in 1998, this apparition has been seen along the A15 for decades. The location does not make it unique, indeed there have been many ghostly sightings on the road running between Lincoln and Sleaford, including a phantom cyclist, a little girl in a pink gown and horses running along the road. However at the turn off for Ruskington, near Sleaford, these sightings are much more common, with multiple reports from people saying something was amiss.

This week Rachel guides a sceptical Marc through the concept of love languages. Popularised online by people who write things like "Paesano Pizza is my love language", they take a look at the original five: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Physical Touch, Acts of Service & Gift-Giving.While hearing listener submissions on the subject, Rachel recalls a recent faux-pas with a wine menu, Marc offers an alternative take on the perception of men who don't know how to express their emotions, and both reveal their results after taking the Love Language test. Habit vs. Skill and The 10,000 Hour Rule It was bought to my attention in an interview I did with Zach Schonbrun, author of The Performance Cortex, that habit and skill are two very different matters. Popularised by Malcolm Gladwell, the 10,000-hour rule suggests that by doing any activity repetitively one will master it. According to Andres Ericsson who has spent a lifetime studying the psychology behind expertise and human performance and the source of Gladwell's research he states that the “10,000-hour rule” is actually not a rule at all. In this episode, I explore my understanding of habit and skill and what was really discovered by Andres Ericsson in regards to the 10,000-hour rule. Enjoy!
Street Epistemology has become popular among many atheists as a conversational way to interrogate people's spiritual beliefs. Popularised by atheist philosopher Peter Boghossian in his book "A Manual For Creating Atheists" the movement is now seeking to create 10,000 street evangelists for atheism. Pascoe Rapacci engages regularly in Street Epistemology (though doesn't claim to speak for the movement as a whole). He engages with Christian apologist Cameron Bertuzzi of Capturing Christianity on whether Street Epistemology is a valid way of investigating the truth of people's beliefs. I write a little blurb like this for every episode, but I feel that some books hardly need any introduction. This is one such example. Malcolm Gladwell is one of the most celebrated journalists and writers of the early 21st century, and his book Outliers caused a splash in people's thinking about success. Why? One answer is that it popularised the idea of the so-called "10,000 hour rule", initially discovered by K. Anders Ericsson, concerning how much "deliberate practice" it takes to become a world-class expert in any field. "Popularised" is the key word here, as several others were writing the same thing, but when Gladwell writes, everybody reads. And, for the most part, everybody believes. (So another answer to "why did the book cause a splash?" would be "because it's Gladwell, and he's famous, and everybody likes him.") The strange thing is, the 10,000 hour rule makes up a minority of what he writes about in his book, but people seem to often forget the rest of the ideas. Since we've already seen the power of extended deliberate practice described in other books (Bounce, Genius Explained, and The Talent Code), it's actually these remaining ideas where we find Gladwell's unique contribution to our knowledge of the development of expertise. And it has a message with is quite at odds with the spirit of the 10,000 hour rule. Gladwell's unique yet oft-forgotten contribution, then, is the idea of success as being a gift. He's not talking about talent, which he more or less rejects by reference to the aforementioned 10,000 hour rule, but about life circumstances. You don't choose where or when you are born, or the culture you are born into, or the state of the job market or of national demographics or of technology as you are growing up, and yet these very factors have a profound effect on whether somebody is successful. Would Bill Gates have become so rich were he born in Burma instead? Or in the 1920s? Or in fourth century Phrygia? Although some of Gladwell's historico-cultural musings can be somewhat open to doubt, in several places he gives evidence strong enough to convince even the careful reader that something funny is indeed going on. In this episode, I hope to help you see where he might be onto something, and where we need to be wary of the potential of his masterful storytelling to obscure his shaky arguments. Enjoy the episode.
