Het is inmiddels al anderhalf jaar geleden dat William de Leeuw uit Middelharnis het ambassadeurschap van KiKa Goeree-Overflakkee op zich nam, als opvolger van de begin 2024 overleden Kees Witte. In een interview in het radioprogramma Op de Hoagte, samen met Rien Mijs, blikt De Leeuw terug op de vele activiteiten die ze organiseren en deelt hij plannen voor de toekomst van de stichting op het eiland. Het werk van KiKa, onderzoek en voorlichting KiKa, de Stichting Kinderen Kankervrij, zet zich in voor het verbeteren van de overlevingskansen van kinderen met kanker. Jaarlijks krijgen bijna 600 kinderen in Nederland kanker, maar dankzij de onderzoeken die KiKa financiert, overleeft inmiddels 81% van deze kinderen de eerste vijf jaar na diagnose, een stijging van 9% ten opzichte van 20 jaar geleden. De stichting richt zich op het verbeteren van behandelingen, medicijnen en de kwaliteit van leven voor patiënten.   Succesvolle Initiatieven en Inzamelacties  Door het jaar heen zijn er diverse eilandelijke activiteiten zoals onder andere het Haringevent, de nieuwjaar duik. Daarnaast zijn er de doorlopende inzamelacties van statiegeldblikjes, oud ijzer en plastic doppen die geld opleveren voor Kika.  Maar er zijn ook kleine persoonlijk initiatieven  zoals een verjaardag inzameling of  de verkoop van handgemaakte spulletjes. De Leeuw benadrukt dat elke bijdrage, groot of klein, belangrijk is. "We werken allemaal samen aan hetzelfde doel." KiKa Goeree-Overflakkee blijft zich inzetten voor kinderen met kanker en hoopt met de steun van de gemeenschap een verschil te maken.

Her work is broadly situated at the intersection of the medical humanities and critical race studies; she is interested in how creative practitioners in contemporary African diasporic contexts express distress and healing, in ways that re-script prevailing psychiatric narratives of illness and wellness. Principally, her work is committed to a decolonial and intersectional approach.   Sarah de Leeuw, a Professor and Canada Research Chair (Humanities and Health Inequities) with the Northern Medical Program (a distributed site of UBC's Faculty of Medicine) is an award-winning researcher, creative writer (poetry and literary non-fiction), and multidisciplinary scholar studying why some people and places have better health than others. Trained as a historical-cultural geographer, de Leeuw's research, activism, and creative practices have for more than 30 years focused on anticolonial, feminist, and queer-informed understandings of overlooked people, communities, and geographies. She grew up in Haida Gwaii and Terrace (Kitsumkalum territory) and now divides her time between Lheidli T'enneh/Dakelh Territory (Prince George) and Syilx Territory (Okanagan Centre).

‘De verdwijning van Peter Treckpoel' is de nieuwe roman van schrijver Rick de Leeuw. Het boek gaat over amateurhistoricus Hubert Thys, die zich verdiept in het verhaal van de Limburgse priester Peter Treckpoel die rond 1500 verdween. De Leeuw is bekend geworden als zanger van de rockband ‘Tröckener Kecks' en maakte albums als ‘Lieg Me De Waarheid' en ‘Beter Als'. Mensen zoals ik zien bij zijn stem als snel doelpunten voor zich van Marco van Basten, Wesley Sneijder of Patrick Kluivert. Of ze denken terug aan de Tour, het skischansspringen en de Elfstedentocht. De stem van Ten Napel – oorspronkelijk een bakkerszoon uit Drenthe – is onlosmakelijke verbonden met de Nederlandse sportgeschiedenis. Deze week vierde hij zijn 80ste verjaardag.

Deze aflevering begon wat later want Ramón had een kater. Verder was het een echte pech week. Zo had Victor griep en kwam z'n autosleutel in de wasmachine terecht. Het Verhaal van Vlaanderen Special - Afl. 4: De Leeuw Van Vlaanderen. De Guldensporenslag. Er wordt 500 jaar na dato zo heroïsch over geschreven door Hendrik Conscience in zijn roman De Leeuw van Vlaanderen (1838). Maar in hoeverre klopt het beeld dat we hebben van de Guldensporenslag? En hoe komt het dat dat boek van Conscience zo beroemd is geworden? Samen met letterkundige Kevin Absillis proberen we iets dichter bij de waarheid te komen.

Rick de Leeuw (1960) is zanger, schrijver en presentator. Hij werd bekend als zanger van de Nederlandse groep Tröckener Kecks. Nu maakt hij al vele jaren soloplaten, zijn recentste op het moment van ons gesprek heet Lieg me de waarheid. Hij is vaak te zien op televisie, ondermeer als voetbalcommentator. In 2006 presenteerde hij zijn eigen talkshow op Canvas: De Leeuw in Vlaanderen. Rick de Leeuw schrijft ook: songteksten uiteraard, daarnaast romans en dichtbundels. Zijn debuutroman heette De laatste held, één van zijn dichtbundels was Echte mannen scheiden niet, geschreven na zijn scheiding. Rick de Leeuw nodigde mij uit bij hem thuis, in het Limburgse Heks, deelgemeente van Heers, waar hij in het centrum woont. We gingen meteen dag zeggen tegen zijn vriendin Maartje, die stond te schilderen in haar atelier in de tuin. Ze is kunstschilder. Rick en ik gingen zitten aan de tafel in de woonkamer, naast de piano; achter mij een nis met boekenkasten waarmee iets aan de hand is - in deze aflevering meer daarover - ook vòòr mij stond nog een boekenkast. Op tafel taart en boeken. Hij vertelt over het verschil tussen Heks en Amsterdam, over het boek Stoner, waaruit hij met een zekere gêne nog eens een zin wil pikken voor een songtekst, over het boek waarin hij als kind zichzelf herkende, en dat bleef zo zijn hele leven lang. Na de zoveelste teleurstellende wedstrijd met dito resultaat is de vraag hoe het tij nog gekeerd kan worden bij Willem II. In de wedstrijd tegen FC Dordrecht kreeg de ploeg van Kevin Hofland pas grip op de tegenstander nadat Jeremy Bokila en Michael de Leeuw waren ingevallen. Van der Put oppert om in de komende wedstrijden - te beginnen in de derby tegen NAC - met alle aanvallende kanonnen in de ploeg te starten. ,,Er is al van alles geprobeerd, maar de puzzelstukjes liggen nog altijd niet op de goede plek", constateert hij. Van Aert valt hem bij: ,,Je moet kijken voor hoeveel doelpunten een speler normaal gepsproken ongeveer goed is in een seizoen. Dan zie je dat het toch vooral van Hornkamp, Bokila en De Leeuw zou moeten komen.” Fons Groenendijk, oud-trainer van Willem II, vindt het te vroeg om te panikeren. ,,Je hebt altijd de play-offs nog om te kunnen promoveren.” Hij vindt dat het niet Willem II-onwaardig zou zijn om ‘de lange bal' te hanteren met Bokila als kapstok. Karl de Leeuw studied over many years with leading experts in the world in the subjects of dyslexia, alternative health, nutrition, and spiritual awakening. These studies took him to the United States, United Kingdom, Poland, Egypt, Israel, India, and Nepal. He is currently working on two studies. One is an informal study to show how we can reverse asthma, osteoporosis, MS and cystic fibrosis. Another is a study about the minerals in plants. Karl's research helped to understand that rather than viewing dyslexia as a curse needing correction, it could be seen as a gift providing distinct and real mental advantages. This exciting message of hope resulted in his first book, The Dyslexia Code. Dyslexia is not something to "suffer" from, this book proposes, but the basis for real, natural-born creativity and entrepreneurship. As part of his investigations, Karl also came to appreciate the vital role that correct nutrition has on our physical and mental health, as well as on how long we live.
