Send me a message - text me! The clothes you wear impact your confidence, self-expression, and even your success - fact! I wanted to get into this subject with someone who knows this subject inside out, so in this episode, I'm joined by Samantha Harman, The Style Editor to explore the powerful connection between style, body image, and self-worth. We talk about how the fashion industry reinforces unrealistic beauty standards, the struggles of plus-size shopping, and why so many women feel disconnected from their wardrobes.Samantha shares how clothing can actually be a tool for empowerment rather than frustration, and why breaking free from rigid style rules can help you show up with confidence in every part of your life. If you're anything like me you'll understand the feeling of standing in front of your wardrobe, feeling lost, wondering why clothes shopping feels so difficult. If you have, this conversation is for you. We're talking about:✔️ Why style is about more than just clothes - it's about confidence and energy✔️ How your star signs should determine what you wear and how you show up ✔️ How the fashion industry fails women, especially plus-size shoppers ✔️ Why traditional styling advice can be limiting rather than empowering ✔️ The role of body image in our clothing choices and how to shift our mindset ✔️ Practical steps to rebuild a wardrobe that truly serves youYou can find Samantha Harman, The Style Editor, at the links below:
Women are constantly judged by their appearance especially clothing, yet style is rarely framed as a tool for empowerment. Samantha Harman joins me on the podcast to unpack the societal pressures surrounding what women wear, the mental load of outfit choices, and the double standards when it comes to using style as a business tool.We explore how personal style is the over looked business tool you didn't know you needed. It's about stepping into your power, owning your worth, and using your wardrobe as a strategic asset to build your authority in business. If you're opening your wardrobe and feeling despair not delight, this episode is a full on mic drop moment for your brain. As a young woman from a working class background in leadership in an elitist, male-dominated industry, Samantha understood first-hand the disparity between how men and women are judged when it comes to dressing for work. She also dealt with body image hang-ups, once cried in a dressing room as shop assistants laughed and was turned down for jobs at 3 fashion companies because she was plus size. Samantha is on a mission to rid the world of the toxic normalisation of women being sold products based on the weaponisation of their bodies against them. Peter York is a cultural commentator, author, and former Style Editor of Harper's & Queen magazine. He is best known for co-authoring the iconic Official Sloane Ranger Handbook in the 1980s. More recently, Peter has shifted his focus to more serious topics, including co-authoring The War Against the BBC with Professor Patrick Barwise. This week, we discuss Peter's latest book, A Dead Cat on Your Table, which delves into the world of "culture wars," the role of media personalities, influencers, and think tanks. We also explore Elon Musk's potential $100 million donation to Nigel Farage and the Reform Party and assess the extent to which the BBC is constrained in addressing "culture war" issues due to government pressure and funding concerns. “It's the one structural fault that dates from the 20s. The government has too much power over the BBC's funding and too much power over the BBC in other ways too. And you look at the manipulations of the last decade, and you can absolutely see that.” Listen to all our episodes here: https://podfollow.com/beebwatch/view To support our journalism and receive a weekly blog sign up now for £1.99 per month: www.patreon.com/BeebWatch/membership Or if you'd rather make a one-off payment (which doesn't entitle you to the blog) please use our crowdfunding page:https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/roger-boltons-beeb-watch-podcast @BeebRogerInstagram: rogerboltonsbeebwatchLinkedIn: Roger Bolton's Beeb Watchemail: roger@rogerboltonsbeebwatch.comwww.goodeggproductions.uk Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Peter York is an author and broadcaster who came to fame writing the Sloane Ranger Handbook with Ann Barr. He was also the Style Editor of Harpers & Queen for 10 years and became a media commentator on English social trends and traits, regularly appearing on television. Peter wrote Peter York's Eighties (1996), this time co-authored with Charles Jennings, which was both a book and a BBC television series. Today I'm chatting with Malaika Crawford, style editor at Hodinkee. Our chat is a bit different than the usual you're used to here, as I really wanted to get Malaika's thoughts on styling, diversification, and what all of this means for us collectors. After moving to New York in 2014, Malaika started working for Mel Ottenberg, you know, Rhianna's stylist. Getting an early exposure to all things luxury has propelled the trajectory of her career and here we are. But all of this had to start somewhere, and it actually began with the collector she looks up to the most. Malaika's got a pulse on all the latest trends, and if anyone has an eye for what looks intriguing, it's her. Pre-Loved Podcast: Rosella Vintage & Minneapolis Vintage Jahna Peloquin is a Minneapolis-based style writer, stylist and style expert with a passion for local fashion, community, sustainability, the arts, and all things vintage. Her writing and styling has been published in Minneapolis Star Tribune, Mpls.St.Paul Magazine and Midwest Home, and she served as the Style Editor of Minnesota Monthly and the Fashion Director of Rosedale Center. Building on 15 years in the local fashion community as a stylist and fashion reporter, Jahna co-founded Fashion Week MN in 2015 as a vehicle to support the local fashion community. Most recently, she founded her own vintage fashion brand, Rosella Vintage, and is a regular vendor at the Minneapolis Vintage Market, and at other pop-ups around the Twin Cities area. Coming soon – late September — you'll be able to find Rosella Vintage at a collective vintage shop called Olio Vintage, so you'll have more opportunities to shop in-person! She's also planning to launch her own website around this time. In this episode, we talk about the Minneapolis fashion scene she grew up in, being a part of local fashion shows, working as a fashion writer, the start of her vintage shop, and her favorite style moments! When I chat with her, it really brings to light the importance of community in creating a great local vintage scene, and I think that leads us in to the secondhand half of our show really well! For the second half of the show, we're headed to a Minneapolis Vintage Market event. Now, the market rotates through the Twin Cities every month (super cool!) but this particular market was actually at the Triple-A baseball stadium, home of the St. Paul Saints, a Minneapolis Twins affiliate! This was such a fun environment for a vintage market, and I had an absolute blast strolling around with my concessions and a beer chatting with the local Minneapolis vintage vendors. Let's head in and hear their stories! Tour Dates: September 21: Pre-Loved Podcast LIVE in St. Louis *This episode is sponsored by Galaxy. In this episode I am speaking to Celebrity Stylist Nana. You might know Nana from seeing her on the TV.......she was in the fabulous You Are What You Wear and she hosted some of the fashion segments on This Morning during lockdown. However, it's her work behind the scenes for which she is most well known in the industry. Styling for celebrities, actors & musicians such as Ed Sheeran, Little Mix and One Direction (she was the stylist on their season of Xfactor too!) Nana has been working as a stylist for over a decade, working her way up from an intern.Nana is currently working as the stylist for the popular Fabulous Magazine (the supplement in the Sun Newspaper) and therefore works with all of the celebrities that are in the public eye right now. I was so keen to hear about the life of a stylist, what it involves and do you get star struck!?.... This is such a great chat and Nana had lots of great tips to share. Her Instagram is full of inspiration and had me shopping for colour and feeling excited to try new combinations. Our first interview of 2021 is with the amazingly brilliant: -Anna Morley - Style Editor at Real Homes MagazineAnna was a photographer realising her passion for publishing following a spell at photo agency ZUMA Press in LA, and Weber Shandwick in Scotland, and then 'procured', shall we say, a role as Picture Editor at Thomson Reuters, before moving on to Hubert Burda Media and Centaur Media Plc, (fitting in some freelance in between) before settling at Future's Real Homes magazine as Style Editor. This interview has some great tips and tricks for Interiors PRs who want to gain coverage, and we go a bit more into Anna than we have done with other Editors previously.Definitely a must for PRs, probably even for people wanting to become Editors - thanks Anna for agreeing to give us this great interview!Kudos to John Lewis & Partners, Matalan, George at Asda Home, Wilko, Dunelm, Argos Home, Habitat and MADE.COM mentioned for their great content.
