As a Recovery Specialist, Youth Mentor, and Certified Life Coach, I'm passionate about empowering individuals to overcome adversity and reach their full potential. My journey from a former gang member and prison inmate to a dedicated change-maker has taught me the power of resilience, and I'm committed to sharing that with others. Through my work, I help individuals and communities break free from cycles of trauma, addiction, and limitation. Growing up and having relationship issues with my father and living in different neighborhoods, I was drawn to the streets and eventually became a gang member. But after a stint in prison, I hit rock bottom. It was there, in that darkest moment, that I discovered my resilience. I realized I had two choices: give up or use my experiences to make a difference. I began to mentor fellow inmates, sharing my story and encouraging them to seek a better path. Upon release, I dedicated myself to helping at-risk youth avoid the mistakes I made. I've seen countless individuals transform their lives through my work as a Youth Mentor, Certified Life Coach, and Recovery Specialist. Aaron Binning is an experienced Social Worker, Educator & Youth Mentor. For a number of years, Aaron put his focus towards supporting at-risk young people, gaining invaluable first hand experience, training and qualifications along the way. Driven by his passion for creating positive change, Aaron came to Bali at the beginning of 2020. This is where he created The Road, an initiative aimed at empowering and educating young men through experiential learning. Through his work he aims to enable young men to embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery, allowing them to understand themselves, their peers, and the world around them. Aaron's vision is to equip young men with life lessons and skills through guidance that many of us missed out on. He firmly believes in the importance of human connection through self-expression and vulnerability, recognizing that the cultivation of these skills are often missed. These past few months I've been connecting with a number of men who are fathers of young boys and it got me thinking: What can we do in order to effectively allow our boys transition into maturity and manhood? What is it that I and many of my fellow men missed out on that left a lasting impact on us? And so with that, I wanted to engage in a discussion... For anybody who is not a parent nor a young man moving through adolescence, my hope is that we still get to use this conversation as an access point to reflect on our own lives and past experiences. In my own exploration of what was absent during my upbringing and the impact this may have had on me; I've found such explorations to be empowering as it offered me the opportunity to intentionally provide myself with the things that I lacked. For parents of young men, I hope this can illuminate an understanding of what may be present for them and how you may be able to support them. A reminder: I want to humbly name that both Aaron and I are not fathers and neither of us want to assume to have any answers here, but the intention was begin a conversation – especially with Aaron's vast experiences of working with young men. — Connect with Aaron Binning: Website: https://www.theroadbali.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theroadbali/?hl=de Connect with Alex Lehmann Website: https://alexlehmann.co/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alexlehmann_?igsh=YzVkODRmOTdmMw== YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@HeartofManPodcast Interested in working with me 1:1? Why did Jason LaChance want to talk with Lil Dallas? He was highly fascinated with how Dallas, after being incarcerated at 16 years of age for over a decade has not only dedicated himself to his art but speaking with youth about mental health and addiction issues. Dallas Roquemore AKA Lil Dallas is 27 years old and has been incarcerated since he was 16 years old, he was released from prison on march 13th 2022. Dallas grew up alongside famous rapper Mozzy, they were incredibly close as children and would rap together as they lived in the same neighborhood. When Dallas wasn't making music he was establishing himself as one of the most recognized gang members in his city. At 16 Dallas had made enough bad choices to land himself in Federal prison. While in prison Dallas met his wife and they got married in the Salinas Valley State Prison. While completing his time he realized that the only reason he and his community committed themselves to a life of Gang conflict was that that was the way they were brought up. Gangs and drugs were normalized and easily accessible. He realized all the bad decisions he made were because he was under the influence, and Dallas decided to put his faith in his passions and family. As soon as he was released he began working with Healthy Life Recovery to tell his story and hopefully inspire others to make better choices. First-hand experience carries a lot of weight and Dalllas carries his stories to adults and children who also grew up in environments around gangs and drugs. Dallas works with Healthy Life Recovery and is also pursuing his rap career, his first mixtape “finally free” which was just released on September 16th. If he hadn't gone to prison Dallas could have risen to stardom alongside his childhood friend Mozzy. Now Dallas is focused on bettering his career and the world. In this conversation I am bringing Levi "The Passion Guy" whom I met in a Fearless Speaking room on Clubhouse. I was so moved by Levi's message that I had to get him on the program to inspire all of you as well. Levi and Eden Gold from a previous episode are only an hour and a half from me. So I had to get them into my network since we all are working with young people in our respective communities and populations that we serve. * Levi's Bio: * No father around. Born to a mother struggling with addiction. Started using drugs at 11. Joined a gang at 14. Never graduated high school. According to the statistics Levi should be dead or in prison. Sometimes the statistics lie. Statistics don't understand the potential every person possesses. Levi is not another statistic! * Instead, Levi is a youth mentor and a transformational speaker who helps people discover their true potential and power in order to start changing the world in the unique way only they can! Levi is not content to simply "motivate" those he speaks to. Motivation can leave as fast as it comes. Levi's passion is to use the life giving power of words to help others discover their purpose and change the world! * * You can find Levi here: * Website: https://www.embraceurchange.com/ * * You can find Sean Dustin here: https://linktr.ee/nowheretogobutup * * --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/no-where-to-go-but-up/message
The EVAC Movement started with a group of students and our teacher, Amy Donofrio, in Jacksonville, Florida. Our class was full of conflict and divided, until we began sharing our stories, and realized our shared traumatic experiences: murdered loved ones, incarceration, and police brutality. We began not only to bond…but motivated to create change. We began by inviting police officers to class for youth-led roundtables and just over one year later, these powerful in-class discussions led to us speaking at the White House, meeting President Barack Obama, making the front page of The New York Times and winning first-place nationwide in a contest sponsored by Harvard. We share this journey in our Tedx Talk, “At-Risk or At-Hope? How We Label Youth Matters.”
