In the past few episodes, I've talked about what it takes for teens to create talent, to get better at anything. According to Daniel Coyle's "The Talent Code," we just need to develop thicker myelin around our neural pathways. To do that, we just need to engage in "deep practice." But... how do you keep doing that? Deep practice is hard. According to Coyle, and I agree, you need ignition. In this episode, I break down the three ingredients teens need to create ignition in their lives so they can stick with the hours it takes to develop talent.--My new gamified mindset training app for teens, Sidekick to Hero, is available on desktop now! Season 2: Forensic Interviewer Growth Continuum Episode 2: Unveiling the NCAC Pathways Model: Building deeper understanding of forensic interviewer training Forensic interviewers have a responsibility to stay up to date with best practices to guarantee that they are providing the best forensic interview possible. In this episode, we will explore the National Children's Advocacy Center new PATHWAYS approach to developing forensic interviewers, answering; What is PATHWAYS, how will it shift mindset in the field about training, and share some key takeaways for supervisors of forensic interviewers. Episode Transcript Show Notes: In today's insightful episode, we're joined by Christina Rouse and a distinguished team of trainers from the National Children's Advocacy Center (NCAC) - Andra Chamberlin, Kim Madden, and Linda Cordisco Steele. The NCAC has an esteemed history, training over 200,000 child abuse professionals since 1985, and they are now developing a revolutionary approach to forensic interviewer training. Recognizing a need to bridge the gap between basic and advanced interviewing skills, they're introducing a new training model called “Pathways.” This model aims to improve integration of basic skills, preparing interviewers for more complex, topic-specific situations, and caters to different learning styles and levels of experience. In their discussion, Andra, Kim, and Linda underline three critical skills for effective interviewing: the skillful use of a continuum of questions, providing social support, and exercising critical thinking. These skills are key in eliciting narrative responses from children, supporting their unique needs, and guiding the direction of the interview. But Pathways doesn't stop there; it also tackles challenges faced by both new and experienced interviewers, emphasizing skill development, case-specific training, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. Andra previews their upcoming ‘Beyond the Basics' curriculum, Kim explores the vital role of collaboration within investigative teams, and Linda stresses the importance of supportive supervision for the professional growth and wellbeing of interviewers. Show Notes: The critical ingredients for developing talent are inspiration, deep practice, good coaches, and autonomy. In this podcast, Dr. Jordan describes what kids need in order to develop their talents: Autonomy: creative geniuses are not qualitatively better in their fields; they produced > volume of work that gave them > variation and a higher chance of originality; quantity is the most predictable path to quality. Thus, kids need to have autonomy in choosing their interests, down time to try things out and daydream and take risks and make mistakes Dr. Jordan describes the concept of deep practice which underlies the 10,000 hour rules of mastery; This starts with ignition or getting inspired by role models. Experience causes intense, unconscious emotional response = love, fascination, inspired, on fire = “I want to be like them, willing to delay gratification: “I want X, so I better do Y like crazy right now”, motivated by desire to connect ourselves to high-achieving people or groups. Deep practice repetition: reach or stretch self slightly beyond your current ability, spending time in the zone of difficulty called the sweet spot. Myelin: wraps nerve fibers making signal stronger, faster, more accurate by preventing electrical impulses from leaking out; whenever practice anything, myelin responds by wrapping layers of insulation around that neural circuit, each new layers adds a little more skill and speed; the thicker the myelin gets, the better it insulates & the faster and more accurate our movements & thoughts become. the more you generate impulses to specific area of brain, encountering & overcoming difficulties, the more neural scaffolding you build; the more scaffolding you build, the faster you learn. Practice makes myelin, and myelin makes perfect; nerve firings grow myelin; myelin controls speed; impulse speed is skill; need autonomy, passion, persistence b/c wrapping myelin around a big circuit requires immense energy & time. Importance of early coaches: crucial in 1st phase of learning to get learner involved, captivated, hooked, and to need & want more info & expertise; made initial learning pleasant, fun, rewarding; much was playful activity, like a game. The best coaches use explain, demonstrate, imitation, correction, and repetition. Other topics described in this podcast: Value passion where you find it; Give kids autonomy to choose activities and move on when they want to; Give kids autonomy to choose activities and move on when they want to; Trust that inspiration & motivation come at different ages & often thru misfortune; Help them find their tribe; affirm character vs. actions Read these books for a more in-depth look at developing talent: Range by David Epstein; The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle, Dark Horse by Todd Rose, Originals by Adam Grant, The Element by Ken Robinson Go to www.drtimjordan.com for more resources from Dr. Jordan
Benjamin Bloom is best known for Bloom's Taxonomy, a scheme for categorising ways of thinking about or interacting with learning content on a scale from less to more sophisticated. However, the project he led investigating the lifelong development of expertise should be much more famous. The book's full title makes it feel as though it was published in 1685 rather than 1985: The dramatic findings of a ground-breaking study of 120 immensely talented individuals reveal astonishing new information on Developing Talent in Young People. Bloom's team looked at extraordinary achievers in six domains: pianists, sculptors, swimmers, tennis players, mathematicians, and neurologists, so that he had two each from artistic, athletic, and academic pursuits. He was trying to understand the life circumstances during childhood and adolescense - particularly the practice routines and social milieu - which led to the development of the subjects' expertise. Their research methods were unusual. Rather than using a large sample and taking quantitative data (which would have been difficult anyway due to the lack of a large number of exceptional people, by definition) or presenting qualitative interviews of individual case studies, Bloom's team interviewed around 20-30 people from each domain and then summarised the findings of these interviews. It leaves us with a sense of the qualitative experience of going through their learning processes, while also reducing the chances of over-generalising from a single case. Pianists were the main focus of discussion where Bloom and his colleauges tried to generalised the findings, although all six categories had a full exposition as to the findings for their domain in particular. The pianists followed an especially clear pattern which is worth starting from, and subsequently comparing with the others. In the context of an abundance of information about how people think and learn on shorter timescales (from seconds to weeks), having information about how people develop over the lifespan is invaluable. I will definitely be referring to this book a lot in future. Enjoy the episode. *** RELATED EPISODES This book is related to the development of expertise, which I talk about on a lot of episodes, but the one specific one I mentioned in the recording was: 22. If you are into stories of success and what it takes to be the best, you will sometimes here someone quote a study about the importance of goal setting. The study happened at Yale University in 1953. He is one of the foremost researchers in the area of human metabolism and author of the book Burn: New Research Blows the Lid Off How We Really Burn Calories, Lose Weight, and Stay Healthy (https://amzn.to/3cdjiOQ). Herman joins me to explain how body weight works and why some people really are naturally thin while others seem destined to struggle with weight. He also explains why the role of exercise is often misunderstood when it comes to losing weight. Certainly, on the surface, it seems that war is totally cruel and senseless. Still, for centuries, humans have fought and killed each other in war. And for what? There is no country or civilization that has ever gone to war without doing great harm to itself. And yet war persists all over the world and throughout history. To get a better understanding of this, I invite you to listen to my guest Mike Martin, visiting research fellow at the Department of War Studies, King's College in London and author of the book, Why We Fight (https://amzn.to/3cf17s2) To be a champion at anything, you need to have talent and ability. However, it takes more than that. In fact, no champion in sports or music – or anything has made it to the top of their game without following two simple rules. Cover image: horse and rider by Nadia, age 5. The nature of talent is something that I dealt with near the beginning of the existence of Education Bookcast, reviewing books like Genius Explained, Outliers, The Talent Code, and Bounce. The general consensus was that talent is an illusion - people simply get better at things through exposure and practice. My confidence in this assertion was shaken when reading the IQ literature, but now, in the book The Road to Excellence edited by K. Anders Ericsson, the article The Rage to Master: the Decisive Role of Talent in the Visual Arts by Ellen Winner. She points out how some exceptional children are obsessed with drawing, and draw in a way that is qualitatively different to ordinary children. She argues that the aforementioned orthodoxy of talent apparently not really existing is in fact incorrect, in light of these prodigies and their extraordinary output. In the recording, I discuss these findings and try to find a way to put it all together. Benjamin Bloom's book Developing Talent in Young People also comes in handy, as not only does Ellen Winner cite it (incorrectly, in my view), but he also provides a valuable insight into his forty years of research into learning in schools which helps us make sense of the conundrum of talent's apparent non-existence while we have well-documented examples of extraordinarily talented individuals, in the visual arts at least. Enjoy the episode. *** RELATED EPISODES 18. Bounce by Matthew Syed 20. Genius Explained by Michael Howe 22. The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle 24. Gregg Goodhart is a pioneer in translating research science to learning superior achievement in the classroom, boardroom, and anything else. A recovering high school music teacher, he found within teaching music the fundamental principles that allow for accelerated improvement commonly referred to as talent. This was a result of serious interest in, and study of, cognitive and behavioral neuroscience and psychology that teachers are not taught in teacher training programs. Using his teaching as a lab to experiment with these ideas he developed unique expertise in explaining to anyone the elements needed to reach any level of success with any skill that is desired. He occupies a singular place as a translator between the research and practical use in our lives. You won't hear about these things the way he presents them anywhere else. What is actually possible in our own achievement is mind-blowing - no 'talent' necessary.

Many people are asking how do we create legendary cultures in a digital / hybrid work environment. On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we ask Daniel Coyle this question: how can we create legendary cultures? Daniel Coyle is a New York Times bestselling author. His book, The Culture Code, was named the Best Business Book of the Year a little while back by Bloomberg. He has a new book out now, called The Culture Playbook: 60 highly effective actions to help your group succeed. He is the man on all things culture, so stay and listen to learn more. Daniel Coyle on Writing His New Book The conversation starts of with congratulating Daniel Coyle on publishing his latest book, The Culture Playbook. Daniel follows up on his thoughts on how he feels when launching a new project or book. “We are living through a moment, aren't we? It's like, when you start a project like this, you're never quite sure when it's going to land. And everybody's trying to figure out, “How are we going? How are we going to do this? How are we going to work together now? Everybody's having that conversation now. It is a moment, and it's kind of fun to explore what's possible” – Daniel Coyle The Transition Period Daniel was then asked about his thoughts on certain huge companies that are telling their people to go back to the office. Another thing to note was that those who are pushing for these things are usually those who are Native Analogs – people whose life don't revolve in the digital sphere. Daniel thinks that this current period is a transitional phase, and it's a way for companies to see what works and what doesn't. “Is it transition and it is totally fascinating to see us people self-organize in this new world. And there's basically two schools of thought about it. The first school of thought is, this was a rupture. People things will never go back to the way they were, people discovered that they had lives outside of work. Then there's another school of thought, which says, Yeah, this is kind of part of a larger, longer journey, there was a sort of zoom out where people realized, hey, life's a lot bigger than work. But at the same time, that there is kind of a joy and a pleasure and a positivity and a productivity that comes out of being in the office. It's maybe not five days a week, maybe it's three, maybe it's two.” – Daniel Coyle Daniel admits that he himself falls under the second school of thought, and that going to the office can be quite beneficial for productivity, even if it's just 2 to 3 days off a week. Organizing Your Office for the New Work Experience On the topic of adopting the hybrid workplace, one of the issues brought up was the lack of coordination. For example, one could be scheduled to be at the office, yet the people who they have to work or have a meeting with are staying at home. Daniel agrees that this is currently happening in a lot of offices, and is something that the teams and management need to address. They have to be intentional and work out schedules where everyone in the team is in the office at the same time, so they can meet and collaborate on what needs to be done for their projects. Management can also help in coordinating schedules, so that different teams that need to work together can have overlapping schedules. But at the end of the day, the initiative to coordinate should come from the teams themselves. Otherwise, you'll be stuck in your cubicle, still doing zoom calls with your teammates.
