"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort;" 2 Corinthians 1:3This is a special passage for me because on a day early in my walk with the Lord, I needed comfort, and this verse was in my scheduled reading. Today's episode has taken a turn. As I prayed this morning, I prayed, "The LORD your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy." Zephaniah 3:17 for all of you. Pausing momentarily, I said, No, not you, Fred. He is not shouting over you with shouts of joy. Repentance came immediately; what I said was not of faith. What I had planned for this episode, I changed. The following thoughts I meditated on. Theologically:I remembered the people Jesus sought out to be in His kingdom. When God said, I am choosing a man after my own heart, He chose David, even knowing his sin with Bathsheba was coming. God is in charge of our sanctification. I don't know why He acts so differently in us, but the Bible is clear. He is the God who Sanctifies; Exodus 31:13Who did Jesus seek for His Kingdom?A wanton and despised woman by a well, John 4. A crippled man by the wayside, John 5. An adulterous woman in John 8, a blind, useless man in John 9, and the failure of Peter, John 21. Finally, a man on a cross who knew He was a sinner is today in paradise with the Savior he called out to. Luke 23:43"How Does Jesus think of Us?" Now, a sermon by Sinclair Ferguson (listen to it, please)"Father, I desire that they also, whom Thou hast given Me, be with Me where I am, in order that they may behold My glory, which Thou hast given Me; for Thou didst love Me before the foundation of the world." John 17:24These are you and I, beloved of God; we have believed because of the word written by the Apostles. - Gifts from the Father to the Son. Our value is not intrinsic to our virtue, but because we are gifts from the Father to the Son. Our So What? Every time you are tempted to say to yourself, "no, not for you" (your name here), concerning the promises of God, remember Jesus thinks of you right now as a precious gift from the Father, and perish the thought "no. not for me."Brethren, let's pray for one another. Finally, I get every country on a continent correctly, and the countries, Australia, that's it, that's the list! I am so pleased!(What I did get wrong is the Devotional's number!)Today, we begin a series of three devotionals, beginning with the God of all the earth, "For your husband is your Maker, Whose name is the LORD of hosts; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel, Who is called the God of all the earth." Isaiah 54:5We find:"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Genesis 1:1At the creation, God was there - There is no other."…In heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other." Deuteronomy 4:39"Know that the LORD Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture." Psalm 100:3"You will say to me then, 'Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?' 20 On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, "Why did you make me like this," will it? 21 Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use, and another for common use?"God Himself answers the question of evil by Himself entering into the evil as our effective propitiation. There is no other sacrifice beyond His. (It's not my thought; I got it from John Lennox.)Our So What?Prayer, our community with God, increases our due deference to the God of all the earth as we are moved by the willing sacrifice of Jesus the Christ. The episode ends at 16:50Greetings from the paddock to the United States, Canada, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica. Geography not being one of my strengths, I did not realize so many countries are considered in North America, but here they are; thank you all for listening to the podcast and sharing in the kingdom's concert of prayer. The wedding of Cana demonstrates the impossible God doing the impossible! At Mary's enigmatic request, Jesus asserts that His time has not yet come. In the language of Mary and Jesus, that meant, "I'll take care of it." Jesus turned at least 120 gallons of water into the finest of wines in a moment. This miracle, however, was not for the masses, but for the wedding guests. For at least five of the guests, there was a special purpose, but today we learn:Our So What?We pray in faith, and looking to God for the answers, we will see those seemingly small miracles that the Biblical characters experienced, too. Next time, we will see how our simplest prayers sometimes ripple out to have meaning far beyond all our expectations. "Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, 21 to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen." Ephesians 3:20-21Brethren, let's pray for one another. "What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." The good news is that we see our Biblical examples engaging in the same thing. Why? We can get absorbed by our concerns or worship so much so we tell God what we know He knows. We see in the wedding a Cana, that all Mary said to Jesus was. "They have no wine." John 3:3Jesus, for His part, knew what she was asking. Our So What?He is what we are not, perfect. He understands our prayers, no matter how incomplete. In examining the question, "What is Prayer?" We accidentally learn why we pray. Even though no Biblical person asks why we pray? Their lives reveal our anguished need for prayer. We are sinners. Until glory, we struggle with sin. Prayer is the act of faith that assures our soul.We are complex lonely beings, and prayer brings us into the arms of our heavenly Father, who knows us, holds us, and comforts us.Some of my favorite prayers:Hannah, 1 Samuel 1.Fathers calling out for their children, Mark 9, Matthew 9, Luke 7.A roofing job, Mark 2Psalm 39, Psalm 42The woman who touched Jesus' robe, Luke 8.Scriptures referenced:Luke 18:1Proverbs 15:8Psalm 42:12 Corinthians 5:17 & Ezekiel 11:19John 17:3 (of course)Hebrews 11:1&6Matthew 11:28-30Romans 8:14-15Romans 8:26-281 Corinthians 12:11-12Hebrews 4:16, 7:25, 4:12-13 The TARDIS even makes an appearance as we learn:Psalm 62:8 Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. I struggled in the first year of my salvation in the area of prayer. Forty-five or so years ago, I neither understood, comprehended, nor apprehended that I was in a new and authentic relationship with my Creator, Savior, and Internal Companion who indwells us all. It took most of those forty years to realize the true nature of eternal life was:"And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent."John 17:3How I learned that in the 20-year struggle with depression! Here is a quick outline of where we begin this episode.1. We were created for community with our Creator.2. We are born estranged (not in community) from our Creator.3. We have been recreated for the community with our Creator. 4. Our journey, peace, meaning, comfort, contentment, and abundant life are born, nurtured, and grown from our community with our Creator. 5. Heaven, eternal life, is learning to know our Creator. Our So What? And our journey in this lifetime. Our impossible need:To understand prayer, we need to understand being humanity. We cry before we are able to talk, but the reasons we cry and talk are the same. We are sinners. The natural state of our sons is selfishness and self-centeredness. We are complicated and bigger on the inside. We are built Biblically upside down. Just a note: Psalm 127 is a Psalm of Solomon Praying the word of is very instructional; we cannot know the mind of God if we do not know His word, but when we know God through His word, it sharpens our prayers. In 2 Samuel 7, God answers David's prayer, as it were, to build for God a temple to bring honor to His name with a resounding no.Then God reminds David what He has already done for David, how blessed David is, and promises to David his descendants will be blessed. What is David's response? David prays: He worships God, confesses his (David's) smallness, and thanks God. David then intercedes, praying for what God has just promised him!"Now therefore, O LORD God, the word that Thou hast spoken concerning Thy servant and his house, confirm it forever, and do as Thou hast spoken, 26 that Thy name may be magnified forever, by saying, 'The LORD of hosts is God over Israel'; and may the house of Thy servant David be established before Thee." 2 Samuel 7:25Our So What is found in two passages:"For Thou, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, hast made a revelation to Thy servant, saying, 'I will build you a house'; therefore Thy servant has found courage to pray this prayer to Thee." 2 Samuel 7:27And"And I say to you, ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you." 10 "For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it shall be opened."Luke 11:9-10Know the word of God, listen to the Holy Spirit, and pray what He has promised. Brethren, let us pray for one another to overcome the weakness of the flesh through prayer. "What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." We conclude our Signature Episode in segments with the why of prayer and the difficulty of the truth, "the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Our growth and consistent prayer move our prayers prayer from a task or discipline to the sweetest part of our day. The Apostle Paul will be our last example. With the insight of a life lived for the spread of the gospel, Paul describes earthly life in this way:Life is full of afflictions, crushed, perplexed, persecuted, struck down, and frustrated. Other inescapable burdens areimmorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like that. How then can the man who accurately details the sorrows and burdens of all God's redeemed also say:Rejoice always; 17 pray without ceasing; 18 in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 andRejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Philippians 4:4.Our So What?"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."Philippians 4:6-7The art of prayer leads to overcoming all that discourages us in His presence and power. Treasured ones of God, cultivate your prayer life to His glory and your soul's satisfaction, even in this fallen world.AmenBrethren, let us pray for one another to overcome the weakness of the flesh through prayer. We are wrapping up, or beginning to, our signature episode, in this installment, we start with David's description in Psalm 22 of the crucifixion of Jesus.Beginning, with the most historic, moment both of great joy for us and agony for our Savior."My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me?" Psalm 22:1aThe spiritual separation of Jesus, his pain, and humiliation are also described in Psalm 22. What did Jesus do in anticipation of this excruciating pain?He sought the Father, gathered His friends, and prayed."And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as Thou wilt." Matthew 26:39We apply in various and sundry ways: "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak." However, it is key to note that we hear that phrase from our Savior in the context of prayer! Our So What? Our duty, glory, excellency, and abundant life flow directly from our communion with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.Brethren, let us pray for one another to overcome the weakness of the flesh through prayer. Through the "Dog Food Incident," I learned that helping my dad around the house was a privilege. At the last extended time, I was able to observe my day, after I had moved from home, I was able to remind him that he was my hero and that I was privileged to be his son. That last salute to my dad had unforeseen eternal results. Thank You, Jesus! The book of Esther teaches us not to take for granted what God has called us to do, and in no way is it less than a privilege to be in the king's presence"Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai, 16 "Go, assemble all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maidens also will fast in the same way. And thus I will go in to the king, which is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish." Esther 4:15-16"Now it came about on the third day that Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the inner court of the king's palace in front of the king's rooms, and the king was sitting on his royal throne in the throne room, opposite the entrance to the palace. 2 And it happened when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, she obtained favor in his sight; and the king extended to Esther the golden scepter which was in his hand. So Esther came near and touched the top of the scepter. 3 Then the king said to her, "What is troubling you, Queen Esther? And what is your request? Even to half of the kingdom it will be given to you." Esther 5:1-3Devotional MeditationPsalm 84:10"For a day in Thy courts is better than a thousand outside. I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God, Than dwell in the tents of wickedness. 11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD gives grace and glory; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly."The King is due our respectful conversation, at all times. Our relationship with our Creator, Savior, and Sustainer is also one with our dad, our father. As we saw last time there is a natural respect we have for our earthly fathers, which translates to our Father in heaven. We add to that the fact He is King. Iconic photos exist of President Kennedy at the resolute desk in the white house with his small children playing in and around the president at work. Iconic photos of the president surrounded by his general staff during the Cuban Missile Crisis also exist. The contrast illustrates our conversations with our Savior, who is:"Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him. 14 For He Himself knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust."Psalm 103:13-14And also:'Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. 10 'Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.Matthew 6:9-10With 1 Chronicles 16:29 and Psalm 27:8 in mind, ourDevotional Meditation is:We are not forcing a formality in our conversation with God. Yet, He is the king of kings and the Lord of Lords. And he's our merciful Father, so it's only natural to engage our Father, the king. Not at all!So as we consider our earthy respect, and our close as it is relationship with our Holy Father:"Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2 a minister in the sanctuary, and in the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man."Hebrews 8:1-2"Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; 29 for our God is a consuming fire."Hebrews 12:28-29Our Devotional Meditation:Must be, Establish Thy word to Thy servant, As that which produces reverence for Thee."Psalm 119:38Approaching our Creator, Savior, and Sustainer with humble respect. Job 38How do I sustain the universe? Job 39If you cannot contend with my creation, how will you contend with me? Job 41Job's humility.:"Then Job answered the LORD, and said, 2 "I know that Thou canst do all things, And that no purpose of Thine can be thwarted. 3 'Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?' "Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand, Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know." 4 'Hear, now, and I will speak; I will ask Thee, and do Thou instruct me.' 5 "I have heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear; But now my eye sees Thee; 6 Therefore I retract, And I repent in dust and ashes."Job 42:1-6Job did not storm in like a prince, and his being humbled in the presence of Almighty God reminds us, as God's treasured people, why our Savior began His ministry with these words::"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.5 "Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God."Matthew 5:3-9Brethren, let's pray for one another."What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." We have seen the example of Jeremiah and how his prayer life saw him through the sorrow of God's wrath. Now, we turn to Job and see how his prayer life made him famous for his enduring faith. "Behold, we count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord's dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful."James 5:11Job was a successful man; he was a wonderful father, but overall, he was a pious man. This is evidenced by his reaction to losing everything."And it came about, when the days of feasting had completed their cycle, that Job would send and consecrate them, rising up early in the morning and offering burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, "Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." Thus Job did continually."Job 1:5"Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked I shall return there. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD." 22 Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God."Job 1:20-22"Then his wife said to him, "Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!" 10 But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?" "In all this Job did not sin with his lips."Job 2:9-10After being overwhelmed by the tedious attacks on his integrity, Job declared he would strut in like a prince to God Almighty and demand an answer; he was about to face his Almighty Creator. Our So what?Job's prayer life gave him endurance and comfort beyond our apprehension. Unlike Jeremiah, Job had no idea what was coming his way. One of the salient aspects of the Book of Job is that God never explains Himself, not to us or Job.We take a foray into the will of God."And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent." John 17:3"And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the first-born among many brethren;" Romans 8:28-29"And He has said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.' Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong." 2 Corinthians 12:9-10Our So What? The revealed will of God is only done in joy, peace, and contentment when we listen carefully to Him and commune with Him in prayer. Thank you for listening; today, we detour just a tad, looking at Jesus' chiding, gently. I believe in their focus on the physical, bread, and not the eternal. We also hear Jesus say:"For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things. 31 "But seek for His kingdom, and these things shall be added to you. 32 "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom."Luke 12:30-32The essence of being a baby is crying. If you're a parent, sometimes you go in, and your baby is crying, but they're not wet, and they're not hungry, they're not hurt, and they're not afraid. So we pick them up, hold them close, talk to them a little bit, and hug them, and their crying stops. Why? Because they need us, they need our presence in that moment. I will say it, once more, "God is a much better parent than we are."If your inner man is giving you some trouble, if your inner man is not experiencing the peace you desire, or maybe you've had at other times, my encouragement is to get into your closet and, draw close to your Savior, and talk to him. Today, we say hello to my friend Genci, pastor of Eagles Church in Tirana, Albania, along with all our brothers and sisters who live in Albania. Genci is a man of character who loves his flock and has a beautiful family. The point of mentioning we are sinners, bigger on the inside and lonely, is to demonstrate our great need not only for salvation but to know and be known by others, most critically, God. In the lives of Jeremiah and Job, we see lives that are fully satisfied and trusting in the deepest of sorrows. But how did they get there?By consistent communion, conversation (prayer) with our Creator, Savior, and Sustainer. In a challenging nearly 50-year ministry with Almighty God, Jeremiah learned through every circumstance:"There is none like Thee, O LORD; Thou art great, and great is Thy name in might.” Jeremiah 10:6"I know, O LORD, that a man's way is not in himself; Nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.” Jeremiah 10:23"Are there any among the idols of the nations who give rain? Or can the heavens grant showers? Is it not Thou, O LORD our God? Therefore we hope in Thee, For Thou art the one who hast done all these things.” Jeremiah 14:22"Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh; is anything too difficult for Me?” Jeremiah 32:27"Correct me, O LORD, but with justice; Not with Thine anger, lest Thou bring me to nothing.” Jeremiah 6:24And Above all,"Thus says the LORD, "Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; 24 but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things," declares the LORD.” Jeremiah 9:23-24Brethren, let's pray for one another."What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." Hello to all our listeners in Japan; I am, by reputation and truth, not much of a traveler, but my beloved friend Rob tells me you are the politest people he has ever visited. Thank you for making us a part of your Christian journey. What should be the content of our prayers? What do His people in the Bible talk to Him about, I thinking everything. You can fact-check me on that. Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah. Psalm 62:8 The ultimate reason and result of our prayers is the glory of God. "Pray, then, in this way: 'Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Matthew 6:9 "Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." 1 Corinthians10:31 The chief reason A, is being conformed to His will. "'Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven." Matthew 6:9 "And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, 42 saying, "Father, if Thou art willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Thine be done." 43 Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground." Luke 22:41-44 Chief reason B is for our soul's satisfaction. In John 11, Martha learned that her Savior was true and merciful. In John 11, Mary learned her Savior was faithful and empathetic. Our So What? The fullness of the Christian life comes when we pray to God for his glory, and we see those results. And we pray to God chiefly to be brought into his will. We see those goals, and what He accomplishes through His weak vessels. Also, when we pray, knowing in all ways, our souls are satisfied in Him. Brethren, let's pray for one another. Not as long as it looks; the major content of this episode ends at 16:13, and then we have our close if you are of a mind to listen. Today our request is for all our listeners to let us know, again if you are of a mind your testimonies in prayer. The freedom of episodic themes gives us a chance to slip in a little encouragement. If you are satisfied, happy, in the throes of fits and starts, or just starting out in your prayer life, today's message is to pray, pray, pray. Our prayer lives grow, and change as we develop our prayer craft. We also know that if we never start and continue, we will not develop the growing, Biblical, dynamic, sincere prayer lives that satisfy our souls and glorify our Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer (Aviad), our Everlasting Father. After we are reconciled with the Father in salvation, our abundant life comes as we grow in our community with Him. Our So What? Pray Pray Pray Brethren, let's pray for one another. We highlight and rejoice in the closed countries we are heard in. We want you to know we remember you daily in our prayers and are blessed you listen. I struggled in the first year of my salvation in the area of prayer. Forty-five or so years ago, I neither understood, comprehended, nor apprehended that I was in a new and authentic relationship with my Creator, Savior, and Internal Companion who indwells us all. It took most of those forty years to realize the true nature of eternal life was: "And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent." John 17:3 How I learned that in the 20-year struggle with depression! Here is a quick outline of where we begin this episode. 1. We were created for community with our Creator. 2. We are born estranged (not in community) from our Creator. 3. The peace, meaning, comfort, contentment, and abundant life we were promised and longed for are only nurtured and grown in our community with our Heavenly Father. Brethren, let's pray for one another. "What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." This episode is a repeat of our episode on forgiveness. This episode was well received, and as you will hear, praying that 2023 will be a year of Jubilee and Forgiveness and revisiting just how serious God is about His children forgiving as we have been forgiven seems like a good idea. Thank You, Jesus! The host is weak, faltering, and wholly inadequate for the task, but the word of God is none of those. The call for the children of God to forgive is serious, and the Bible uses: Serious Command as witnessed by: Commands Matthew 6:14 Mark 11:25 Allusions: Matthew 5:43-45 Philippians 2:3ff Exhortations: Ephesians 4:29-32 Romans 13 Serious Discipline: David was disciplined through Embarrassment; 2 Samuel 2:12 Physical Pain: Psalm 32&38 The regret of others paying for his sins: 2 Samuel 24:17 We have only updated the introduction. Addendum: We begin with a challenge to the special ones who listen but are in Christ, part of the Kingdom of Christ. We welcome Hong Kong and are glad you joined the Free Range Preacher on Prayer. In part two of our signature episode, we find through the Messiah, we have been reconciled to God, we are no longer enemies but Children, and we are brought into a new and transparent relationship with one another. Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ, and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. Galatians 2:27-29 Our So What? We know how to initiate, grow, and deepen our human relationships, and those principles apply to our new relationship with God. Morocco has beautiful landscapes and movie sets from around the world. My favorite is Casablanca, which stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Thank you, everyone in Morocco, for listening. Our impossible need: To understand prayer, we need to understand being humanity. We cry before we are able to talk, but the reasons we cry and talk are the same. We are sinners. The natural state of our sons is selfishness and self-centeredness. We are complicated and bigger on the inside. We are built Biblically upside down. We look to what is best for us as an individual. The results: Estrangement from God, and isolation from one another. Our So What? We long to know others and be fully known by others, beginning with the God-shaped void in our souls. Our impossible solution, next time. Brethren, let's pray for one another. "What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." Every once in a while, not often, but consistently, I come to a particular episode that I'm doing for myself. Today is one of those. I have told my children, and then everyone else who might listen to this old guy, that the best place to be is at the foot of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in communion with Him—Payer in a simpler term. No matter my circumstance, sad or joyful in my present, the best place for me is at the foot of our Creator, God, Redeemer, King, Rock, and Refuge. Because of His love and compassion, He is our peace, even in fear. Recently, I came across this quote "My sins prevail over me, and the terrors of their guiltiness. I am put often to ask, if Christ and I did ever shake hands together in earnest. I mean not that my feast-days are quite gone, but I am made of extremes." Samuel Rutherford We are children of God, and yet we are children of extremes. We have exquisite love for God in our inner man, and our souls exalt in His truths as we let them wash over us. At the same time we are brought to shame and wonder at the depths of our sins, and also know the cries of Paul: "Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?" Romans 7:24 A song we referenced before is "Hallelujah," by Leonard Cohen. Whatever way, he came to this genius song verse: "I did my best, it wasn't much. I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch. I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool ya. And even though it all went wrong, I'll stand before the Lord of song with nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah." "There's a blaze of light in every word, it doesn't matter which you heard, the holy or the broken Hallelujah." We all come like Samual Rutherford and my hero/mentor David with great cheer and sorrow, but God accepts our holy and broken Hallelujahs. "I have become dumb, I do not open my mouth, Because it is Thou who hast done it. 10 "Remove Thy plague from me; Because of the opposition of Thy hand, I am perishing. 11 "With reproofs Thou dost chasten a man for iniquity; Thou dost consume as a moth what is precious to him; Surely every man is a mere breath. 12 "Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; Do not be silent at my tears; For I am a stranger with Thee, A sojourner like all my fathers. 13 "Turn Thy gaze away from me, that I may smile again, Before I depart and am no more." Psalm 39:9-13 "My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises! 8 Awake, my glory; Awake, harp and lyre, I will awaken the dawn! 9 I will give thanks to Thee, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to Thee among the nations. 10 For Thy lovingkindness is great to the heavens, And Thy truth to the clouds. 11 Be exalted above the heavens, O God; Let Thy glory be above all the earth." Psalm 57:7-11 Our So what? That is my witness; that is what I have to give to thee. I know the depths of sorrow that says, turn away thy gaze from me. and I know his loving kindness is great to the heavens. One of the great ends while we are on this earth of our prayer lives is that we learn. That he accepts our holy and our broken, hallelujahs. Brethren, let's pray for one another. France and the United Arab Emirates have at least one thing in common: a friend of mine. In today's episode, you can hear that story and how thankful I am to have listeners in both nations. A new year has started, and it is not at all uncommon for God's children to take this time to renew their dedication to God's purpose in their lives. We are also already past quitters day, the day when the promises we have made to ourselves have failed. Today, though, wherever you are in your new year's dedication to a consistent prayer life, consecrated to prayer, committed to daily prayer, you may run into your own quitters day somewhere down the road; then, who ya gonna call? Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master, he stands or falls, and stand he will, for the Lord is able to make him stand. God is on your side. He wants you to stand. Secondly, go to the word for your encouragement. Go to the word for your excitement. If you need direction, what did Jesus say in his temptation? It is written. It is written. It is written. God tells us in Matthew 4 to, or Matthew 6, to seek ye first. That was Matthew 4, by the way. He tells us in Matthew 6, 33, to seek ye first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. Take those as encouragement. If you're tired and worn, remember Matthew 11, 28 and 29. If you need wisdom, James 1 tells you to ask God for wisdom and to pray about it. The basis of our joy is in our circumstances. It's not even what we do for God. It's the fact that our names are written in heaven. You can have joy in that. You know your father loves you. That's Luke 10:20. If you're fearful, he says in Hebrews 13:5 and other places, he will never leave us or forsake us. He won't run away with you because you miss some days or struggle in your conversation. It's hard to talk to God when you have never seen Him again or heard Him. And that's Hebrews' prayer, the definition of faith in Hebrews 11. 1 and 11. 6. When we are at the end and don't know what else to do, what then? Immediately, the boy's father cried out and began saying, I do believe. Help thou my unbelief. Mark 9 24 He's our father. We throw ourselves on his fatherly love. Psalm 104. We call to the sustainer of our soul. Psalm 54, 4 Remember, it's he who initiated our relationship. Matthew 11:28-29 Prayer is a discipline, but don't make it a chore. "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart. And you shall find rest for your souls, for my yoke is easy and my load is light." Our conversation is a break in our day; it's a respite. It's our hiding place. When you go into your closet to pray by yourself, you may be by yourself physically, but you are never alone. The Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit are giving you their undivided attention. Our So what? Call to God to renew our fellowship with Him. Brethren, let's pray for one another. "What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." “Nuts and Bolts” - Listen at your peril, but there is an encouragement at the end. Thank you. I really enjoyed the energy of last year's October Surprise month, and the feedback was positive. (The whole message explains why we are doing "nuts and bolts," and there's an encouragement at the end today. So for Season Seven, at least to begin with, we are going to use the same format as we do for our October Surprise month. We will produce three episodes a week in a shorter format. We will test this format to see if it works for heavier content topics and how you all like it. So For instance, we are redoing our signature episode and breaking it up into short segments as long as I have self-control. (LOL our loud) That will come out soon. After that, for new listeners who are trying us out, we will republish all the segments on the same day, so the new listeners can take in as much of that episode as they need to get a flavor of the podcast. I know it doesn't always sound like it, but there is a study that goes into the "heavier content" episodes. To stick to this schedule, we will alternate each week, or at the end of each series, typically Devotionals or other "lighter content." Prayerfully, this will allow for a thorough study of the "heavier content episodes." In our nuts and bolts episodes will also include some new aspects of the ministry: Our extra prayer encouragements. 1. Prayer journals, such as the "Foundational Blocks of Biblical Prayer." It is available on Amazon; just search for the title. 2. We will highlight why and how a prayer journal can help foster your prayer life. 3. We are in the process of creating a 2025 prayer journal right now; we will announce it in two weeks. 4. Wearables - No, not the tech kind! We have some t-shirts and other items to promote prayer. through graphics. You will be able to visit the website www.freerangepreacheronprayer.com and get information on the products Caution! One of the reasons I am doing the "Nuts and Bolts" episodes, well the two reasons, 1. To keep the main episodes short. The workings of the podcast should not impede our goal. 2. This is a faith-based ministry, and not to make money. We receive donations occasionally, even when I don't highlight the donation tab because money is not why we do the podcast. Our goal is to help as much as God ordains Christians in our prayer lives. If I didn't use a journal system myself, I would not advocate their use. The next, "Nuts and Bolts," discusses the advantages of using a journal, but not today. Today, a thought occurred to me that I want to end with. In his sermon titled "WhyPray?" Ligon Duncan tells us that no Bible character ever asks that question. None. I add that they believe in the Bible prayer, period. Second I remembered John 21, at the end of the chapter, no need to go into more detail than this, Peter is asking Jesus about His will for the apostle John, and Jesus says, "Jesus *said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!" In verse 22. I said to myself today that I have asked all kinds of questions about prayer, doubtful questions at times and curious questions at other times. Of all the questions one might have about prayer, our Master and Savior say, "What is that to you?" You follow Me," and that means pray. Thank you for listening, brethren, let us obey. The Land Down Under, Australia, is our featured nation today; thank you, Aussies. I love your sense of humor and would love to use the words, mate, in a way that sounded natural. I woke up this morning with one thing on my mind, "As Christians, we ought to be stunningly thankful. Here are some of the verses that believers in God should be ridiculously thankful for. We experience the mercies of God, every minute. "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 "Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and YOU SHALL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30 "For My yoke is easy, and My load is light." Matthew 11:28-30 "The LORD is compassionate and gracious, Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness. 9 He will not always strive with us; Nor will He keep His anger forever. 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. 13 Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him. 14 For He Himself knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust." Psalm 103:8-14 Our so what? Because of mercy, we know Death is conquered. We have a new inner person. We have peace with God. We have hope. Our relationships have eternal meaning. Our conduct has eternal meaning. We have eternal life with the God who loves us. Brethren, let's pray for one another. Today, the Free Range Preacher on Prayer podcast welcomes several newcomers. Thank you, Slovakia, Panama, Romania, Morocco, Bulgaria, and Iceland! Was Voltaire correct when he said that man had paid God back by creating him in our image? I took that for granted even in my Christian life until Dr. Amanda Podany described in detail (in the series "Ancient Mesopotamia" from Great Courses Plus) the gods of Ancient Mesopotamia. The Creator God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is nothing remotely like those gods. So a careful reading of the Bible shows Voltaire to be mistaken. The great "I AM" in His holiness is profoundly incomprehensible to His creation. Learn about the incomprehensibility of God in today's episode. Our So What? Our inability to apprehend our Creator validates our faith in His promises and His testimony from the Bible that He is indeed the great "I M." Brethren, let's pray for one another. The podcast principal feels better, so we welcome Kenya and the great Tsavo West National Park. I vacillate between the desire to see the beautiful Savanas of Kenya and my dotage fearing the abundant wildlife! Welcome, brothers and sisters in Christ, Kenya, and even the world wild. Thank you for listening. Today, we see the holiness of God through the prism of His mercy. Isaiah stood there. In his humiliation, that beautiful, that beautiful humiliation. And let the angel touch his lips with that searing coal. And the prism we are looking through is God's mercies. And we see The holy God of the universe touching us and cleansing us, in our case, by the blood of Jesus. Isaiah's cases illustrated: "behold, this has touched your lips. And your iniquity is taken away, and your sin is forgiven." He knew then the dirtiness of his sin and the glory of forgiveness, and that's why his humiliation was a beautiful humiliation. At this moment, Isaiah learned the meaning of Jesus' words: "Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that your spirits are, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven." Luke 10. 20. And there's nothing like that. So that beautiful humiliation leads to God's beautiful mercies and our beautiful salvation. So What? Nothing else matters, except our names are recorded in heaven. And every single martyr who died at the stake, or in the Colosseum, or who died being burnt, or drowned, in that moment, they have all they will ever need. Even martyrdom is a means of great gain. Brethren, let's pray for one another. Welcome, Bulgaria, and wow! What a trout fishing sensation you are! Thank you for joining the Free Range Preacher on Prayer podcast. Today, we are back to our gratitude in God, as He has revealed Himself. Today, we look again at the traumatic holiness (otherness) of God. As we stand ten feet from the sun, we look through a prism that filters out all but the moral perfection of God. "In the year of King Uzziah's death, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. 2 Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings; with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called out to another and said, "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory." 4 And the foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, while the temple was filling with smoke." Isaiah 6:1-4 His moral perfection alone shatters our self-image and humbles us to the core. "Then I said, "Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts." Isaiah 6:5 It's a beautiful humility and reverence. Do you imagine Isaiah, Moses, John in revelation, David, Paul, Peter, or any of the Biblical saints being sad after seeing God in His Holiness and being torn to pieces and then healed? Our so what? The beauty of God in His Holiness leads us to humility, which relieves our torn self-image and is beautiful to us. By definition, a life-changing beauty. Brethren, let's pray for one another. Welcome Iceland to the Free Range Preacher on Prayer podcast. We are glad to have you here, and I am blessed to say I have a dear friend who lived in your country for many memorable years of her life. Today, we are thankful for the Holiness of God. We liken Isaiah's experience in Isaiah 6, to standing 10 feet from the earth's sun and asking: "What do you believe you would notice first? Did you imagine the sun's immensity? Sheer size? How about the blinding light, the pull of gravity? What could keep you only 10 feet from the sun? Would you notice the solar winds, the heat, or the violent atomic fusion? Better still, which one of those would tear you to pieces first? Better stiller, our "So What?" What in the world is there to be thankful for, as Isaiah says? "Woe is me, for I am ruined! "O LORD, what is man, that Thou dost take knowledge of him? Or the son of man, that Thou dost think of him? 4 Man is like a mere breath; His days are like a passing shadow." Psalm 144:3-4 The immense, righteous, all-powerful, just God of the universe takes knowledge of us. Fleeting and as puny as we are, He thinks of us. Brethren, let's pray for one another. Missed it by that much. Psalm 139 is one the most moving, comforting, and detailed descriptions of God's Omniscience in the Holy Writ. A sample of what David teaches us: God saved us, knowing our sins intimately. We cannot flee His mercies. Our darkest days are not dark to Him. We are designed to be exactly to be us. Our So What? We are excessively comforted by His knowledge and humbled by His mercies. Humbled to call out, as David did: "Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; 24 And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way." Though I don't mention where you live, rest assured of our prayers, and our gratitude you are there. Speaking of gratitude, as is our wont, I like saying that, but I'm not sure why, we begin each year with episodes on our thankfulness to our Creator, Savior, and Sustainer. This year, for the attributes of God! We begin with faithfulness, our verses of contemplation: "Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven." Luke 10:20 "Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 "Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3 "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 "And you know the way where I am going." 5 Thomas *said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?" 6Jesus *said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.
