    Devotional 78: Sweet Failure

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 25, 2021 29:25

We may look at Jacob and think he failed the better part of his life in trusting God and experiencing the comfort of such active faith (I know that is the way I lean), and we mad admire Joseph and His faith which made him faithful to his calling, What is excellent news to our ears right now is, Jacob's faith did not thwart the plan of God, and Jacob's faithfulness did not earn the good intent of God. It was God in His faithfulness that brought about the salvation of many. Oh Lord, hast the day when I resemble Jacob less: Genesis 42:36 And their father Jacob said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and you would take Benjamin; all these things are against me.” And more of this: Genesis 50:20 “And as for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.” Help all Your children, either way, say together: Romans 11:32-36 32 For God has shut up all in disobedience that He might show mercy to all. 33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! 34 For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, OR WHO BECAME HIS COUNSELOR? 35 Or WHO HAS FIRST GIVEN TO HIM THAT IT MIGHT BE PAID BACK TO HIM AGAIN? 36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen. Today's Passages: Jacob's promises: Genesis 25:23 the older will serve the younger Genesis 28:13-19 I will do these things for you… Jacob's response: Genesis 27 deceives his dad to get the promise his way. Genesis 28:20-22 Jacob's final testimony: Genesis 45:28 Then Israel said, “It is enough; my son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.” Benediction: Romans 11:32-36 Jude 1:24-25 And since He bids me seek His face, Believe His Word and trust His grace, I'll cast on Him my every care, And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!" Bragging is sin, but in faith, we are thoroughly admonished to boast. We can be thankful for our boasting. Jeremiah 9:23-24 23 Thus says the LORD, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; 24 but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD. By His mercies, we boast all day long. John 17:3 3 “And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent. We have the privilege of being born again, saved by grace through the mercies of God. In this divine privilege, our new inner man longs to know God more and more. Our souls long for that genuine relationship and know Him more and more. Our desire is God-given and insatiable. As a result of our meditation of God and His Word, we are carried away in the sweet confusion of desiring what we cannot attain until heaven, and even then, as we see Him clearly, He will still be our Creator and are His creatures. Glory to God in the highest. Our great cloud of witnesses has testified to us. Psalm 47:7 Deep calls to deep at the sound of Thy waterfalls; All Thy breakers and Thy waves have rolled over me. - Sons of Korah. And Beloved David: Psalm 39:12-13 “Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; Do not be silent at my tears; For I am a stranger with Thee, A sojourner like all my fathers. 13 “Turn Thy gaze away from me, that I may smile again, Before I depart and am no more.” Seek the deep mysteries of Father Son and Holy Ghost, beloved and blessed family. We know that is true, as we take simple Biblical teaching about mankind, it is essential. Human Condition: We are complicated personal beings. In truth, we know in our own individual hearts that we are capable of noble and positive emotions, thoughts, and actions. We are also capable of evil and negative emotions, thoughts, and actions. We see those possibilities enough in other people, so we know it is a universal truth of the human condition. We know as well from our insides out that the heart of every decision we make is physically focused and completely self-centered. Even the good we do is tainted by our physical selfish natures. We know the Bible is correct when we are labeled sinners. The goodness is, there is a Savior, Jesus Christ God in the flesh sinless yet crucified, all on our behalf. If you are compelled to follow the word of God, do so. There is no other name given among men for salvation. Brothers and sisters, we are called to pray for the spread of the gospel and the harvest workers even to the ends of the earth. The reason we pray: Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? Romans 1:16-17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “bBUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.” Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, What we pray: Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 “Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and YOU SHALL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 3“For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.” Sweet Jesus, may Thy name be known. (I may have stumbled into something by accident.) Not really. It is Biblical; in point of fact, our prayers are our responses to what He has revealed to us. Only now, we might say, He has sent us a letter, and we have instant messaged Him because there is no lag time for our prayers to be known by our Savior! (God's promises) "are the mould into which we may pour our fervid spirits without fear, they are the signed cheque, made payable to order, which must be endorsed and presented for payment." - F.B. Meyer God's promises are yes and Amen (I wish I would have thought of that in the episodes!), as well as his appeal, to pray those promises. His will is mysterious but clear to us. He tells us He will supply and yet instructs in the substance of our prayers to pray for our daily bread. He assures us we are forgiven, and in the same framework for prayer, he included the petition to forgive us our debts, and we have forgiven our debtors. In His providence of prayer, we at minimum reinforce our faith in His promises and rehearse to our soul's edification, our dependence on Him. I never knew how weak I was till now, when He hidest Himself, and when I have Him to seek seven times a day. I am a dry and withered branch and a piece of dead carcass, dry bones, and not able to step over a straw. The thoughts of my old sins are as the summons of death to me, and of late, my brother's case hath stricken me to the heart. Cold prayers are like arrows without heads, as swords without edges, as birds without wings: they pierce not, they cut not, they fly not up to heaven. Such prayers as have no heavenly fire in them, do always freeze before they reach as high as heaven. But fervent prayer is very prevalent with God. What more can be said? I follow with our prayer. And so you know, whether you're humble, or demanding, whether you're loving, or you just want stuff from this, God who saved you. And sometimes, that will be true of all of us. The reality is, and think about this when you go to prayer, you are what you are on your knees. If, again, you take seriously, you are open and laid bare to God. He knows your prayers. “In each exhortation our Lord bids us pray. Beloved, let us abound in supplication. Depend upon it that failure in prayer will undermine the foundation of our peace and sap the strength of our confidence; but if we abound in pleading with God we shall grow strong in the Lord, and we shall be happy in his love, we shall become a blessing to those around us. Need I commend the mercy-seat to you who wait before it? Surely prayer must have become such a joy to you, such a necessity of your being, such an element of your life, that I hardly need press it upon you as a duty, or invite you to it as a privilege. Yet still I do so, because the Master does it by a triple exhortation. A threefold cord is not easily broken— let not my text be neglected by you. Let me urge you to repeated, varied, ever intensifying prayer; ask! seek! knock! Cease not to ask till you receive; cease not to seek till you find; cease not to knock till the door is opened unto you.” Practically speaking, it would have been wise of me to have read everything Charles Haddon Spurgeon wrote on prayer before I began the podcast… but then where would the fun of discovery have gone? No one says it better: Surely prayer must have become such a joy to you, such a necessity of your being, such an element of your life, that I hardly need press it upon you as a duty, or invite you to it as a privilege. Matthew 7:7-12 begins with ask, seek, and knock… As we brush away, for analogy's sake, the silt and sand from this form at the bottom of the sea, we see with clarity, before we take the time to clean it up, it is the treasure of prayer. But prayer for what? Some apply this passage to general prayer. Others believe and apply this intensity of prayer to seeking salvation. And at least one other believes verses seven to eleven are an illustration of verse 12: Matthew 7:12 "Therefore, however you want people to treat you, so treat them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." By the time we get done… in November, we will see all three as Biblical, profound, and beautiful applications. Today we introduce Ask, Seek, and Knock, our call to prayer. It's because our God is creator, Savior, faithful Sovereign, the supplier of all we need, we pray, we worship, and we bow down. As it says in James and Peter, we humble ourselves because our sin is great and because deservedly so, we are in great distress. More importantly, we pray from our distress because our Father, Son, and Holy Ghost is a great God, and there is no other. We review the podcast's purpose: the desire for every Christian to have a growing, Biblical, dynamic, sincere, soul-satisfying prayer life. It truly does break my heart that any Christian should not know the sweetness of comfort and rebuke from the lover of our souls. Father Son and Holy Spirit our creator and Savior. He does sustain our souls. We review Job 3:20-26, Lamentations 3:1-6 & 17 to remember the pouring out of our souls is never disdained by Holy God. Indeed He answers us with compassion and faithfulness. We review Psalm 16:6 and Psalm 119:132 that if the wounds of a faithful are not to be turned away, how sweet our Father's loving rebuke is to our taste. You can test my words. You will find them accurate, but what should move us to our Holy daily communion with our God is His word to us: Psalm 81 15-16 15 "He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him, and honor him. 16 "With a long life I will satisfy him. I did have some voice trouble with the smoke 'round these parts, :) which caused me to lean in a bit, which caused some gruff voice, and bumping of the mic. I trust it will not be too distracting. The Bible is our tutor in prayer; we learn most effectively by listening to the prayers of the saints who comprise our great cloud of witnesses. In this episode, we see revival and the pattern elements and pathos of prayer. Nehemiah 8:4-8 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. Then Ezra blessed the LORD the great God. And all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands; then they bowed low and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. 7 Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, explained the law to the people while the people remained in their place. 8 And they read from the book, from the law of God, translating to give the sense so that they understood the reading. What happens next may surprise you… balance of probabilities not, since the Book of Nehemiah is no stranger to God's people. As Casey would say, you could look it up. And since He bids me seek His face, Believe His Word and trust His grace, I'll cast on Him my every care, And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!" Jesus Teaches Prayer - Fasting - When not If.

You catch me musing on this one; as I was recording, it occurred to me the utter height of hypocrisy is found in someone fasting to be seen by men. If fasting, in essence, is carrying such a burden on our hearts that for a time, nothing, not even our daily bread, is more important than prayer, the pinnacle of hypocrisy it seems to me to be is fake fasting, so others will see how pious we are. Jesus, says “When” you fast, which I believe means we will have just those times of distress of heart so we can think of nothing but prayer to our merciful God. And since He bids me seek His face, Believe His Word and trust His grace, I'll cast on Him my every care, And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!" Devotional 71 Confession is Good for the Soul

There are other times when our sorrow for our sins burst forth, remember like, Yahweh-Perazim, breaking through in victory, we are open and laid bare before the cross in repentance. The good news is the miraculous news. As a matter of fact is, we are not alone, and our explosive, humbling repentance and deep sorrow are evidence of our salvation. Why, why do we sin and sin and then cry out this way only from time to time? Robert Bruce might have an insight: "Not, my lord, as I should be; if you and I both were fully persuaded that there were a hell, we would do otherwise than we do." We believe the whole counsel of God and our souls' glory in our forgiveness and the love of God: 1 Peter 1:8-9 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls. Never forbid yourself bursting forth with sorrow and tears at the broken sorrow for our sins. Perhaps as Bruce's thought implies, if we believed more fully, we would live differently and repent explosively in sorrow more often. Please do not linger on that, confess repent and believe. His promises are forever true. Let your times of great sadness be part of your assurance. You are a child of God. And since He bids me seek His face, Believe His Word and trust His grace, I'll cast on Him my every care, And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!"
