VYS0008 - Show Notes If there is one common experience in the life of both Hine and Buckley that could be said to have jump-started Vayse into existence, it was watching the TV series Hellier. If there is one person alive right now who could be said to have been directly responsible for both Hine and Buckley watching Hellier, that person is writer and journalist Will Salmon. In this episode Hine and Buckley talk to Will Salmon about Hellier, Penny Royal and whether these and other 'media viruses' can be responsible, consciously or unconsciously, for re-enchanting the lives of their audience - "I think we're at the beginning of a global awakening man..." And now for something a little different. This is a show about scary stories and writing horror… but that doesn't mean everything has to be on the page. Our guest this week is Richard Maclean Smith, host and producer of Unexplained Podcast, the best show out there on the creepy, mysterious and mystifying events that people like me spend hours reading about on Wikipedia. There is everything from true crime to strange disappearances, ghosts and demons, monsters and UFOs, as well as some more unique oddities, like a woman killed by the ‘little folk' and a computer that may have communicated through time.God I love me some High Strangeness.Ok, I'll throw you a bone, he also has a book to complement the podcast. That book – Unexplained: Real Life Supernatural Stories for Uncertain Times delves deeper into a selection of particularly weird events, whilst also giving Richard more room to expand beyond the mystery, into the areas of philosophy, psychology and humanism that really fascinates him. Cos that's what set's Unexplained apart – that reflection and interrogation of the human condition. We talk about all that, but I'm a mystery nerd, and I insist on simpler questions like, “what's your favourite mystery” too, and we talk about vanishing hikers, cursed boxes and possessed murderers, as well as fear of the dark and dreams about Mikhail Gorbachev. I'm always there for you listeners, ready to dumb it down.Enjoy!Follow the link for Richard's horror fiction podcast, The Fountain Road FilesSupport the show on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/TalkingScaredPodCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com.Download Novellic on Google Play or Apple Store.
We delve further into spooky season and this week, after being a long-time fan, Mr. James gets to speak to the host of Unexplained; the enigmatic and mysterious Richard McLean-Smith.Richard discusses his time at school in which he was caught up in a protest over ball-games, how sliding into D.Ms used to involve laces and the time he was the victim of rough justice by some understandably-outraged girls.Unexplained is a cracking podcast and one that you should definitely begin listening to if you haven't already. The episode 'Demons in Suburbia' is a particularly chilling tale, as is Richard's side-project 'The Fountain Road Files'.Intro music used with permission by RMcS.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/rightintheschoolies)

Today it is generally agreed that absolute death for humans comes only when the brain has irreversibly ceased to function. However, a remarkable paper authored by a team of neuroscientist from Yale School of Medicine and published in April 2019, has reignited the debate over just what is and what isn’t irreversible. Could what appears to be a dead brain, in fact still remain one with potential to regain consciousness? Go to @unexplainedpod, facebook.com/unexplainedpodcast or unexplainedpodcast.com for more info. Matthew Sweet talks to the author of The Essex Serpent, Sarah Perry, about her re-imagining of the Melmoth story, first published in 1920 by the Irish playwright, novelist and clergyman Charles Maturin. His Melmoth the Wanderer was a critique of Catholicism following a scholar who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for living 150 years longer. Sarah Perry's version begins in Prague with a female scholar who feels she's being watched. Plus, experts on the Gothic Roger Luckhurst and Helen Wheatley discuss the apparently perennial appeal of the Gothic in literature, cinema and on television. And, Matthew talks to Richard Maclean Smith, whose podcast and book UNEXPLAINED report on the odd, mysterious and uncanny. Melmoth by Sarah Perry is out now. Professor Roger Luckhurst is the author of The Mummy's Curse: The true history of a dark fantasy, Helen Wheatley's publications include Gothic Television Rosemary's Baby (1968) was directed by Roman Polanski from the novel by Ira Levin. Night of the Living Dead is a 1968 American independent horror film written, directed, photographed and edited by George A. Romero Producer: Luke Mulhall
