Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, known as Moorhead & Benson, are the co-directing team behind the 2018 sci-fi cult hit THE ENDLESS, the horror-romance SPRING, SYNCHRONIC starring Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan, the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival sleeper success RESOLUTION, as well as Marvel's LOKI Season 2 and the upcoming DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN. Their critically acclaimed fifth feature film SOMETHING IN THE DIRT premiered at Sundance Film Festival and was released theatrically in the USA in November 2022. They have recently directed Jordan Peele's THE TWILIGHT ZONE, the Netflix series ARCHIVE 81, as well as MOON KNIGHT, LOKI, and DAREDEVIL for Marvel Studios. With a do-it-yourself approach to filmmaking, they often wear as many hats as possible on their films: writing, directing, acting, producing, cinematography, editing, and visual effects. PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Michael Felker (THINGS WILL BE DIFFERENT) joins Adam and Joe in the ArieScope Studio to discuss his career journey and his directorial debut. From the films of 1999 that injected him with the filmmaking bug… to his experience at FSU and his first few assistant jobs working within the industry… to turning his gig as a “tape logger” for huge studio productions into his own version of film school… to the Production Assistant experience that changed his entire outlook on filmmaking… to his work as an editor on V/H/S VIRAL and his extensive working relationship editing films for friends of THE MOVIE CRYPT Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead (Episode 209) like THE ENDLESS, SYNCHRONIC, and SOMETHING IN THE DIRT… to the process of writing and developing his time traveling mind bender THINGS WILL BE DIFFERENT (in theaters now and available On-Demand soon)… and the massive wrench that got thrown into his production at the very start of photography and the extremely creative way that he pivoted to overcome the obstacle… Michael's story is as technically fascinating as it is inspiring. Also, Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a filmmaker who's project suddenly fell apart, the group discusses some of their unexpectedly pivotal moments at the cinema, and Michael shares why diligent pre-production and keeping the scope of a film within your available resources is so important to the success of an indie film.

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are a duo who don't wait for permission and refuse to let small budgets reign in their storytelling ambitions. Since announcing themselves as a fierce new force in independent filmmaking a decade ago with the meta-horror Resolution, the pair have released a further four films, each one a staggeringly original triumph of imagination over budgetary restraints. Spring was a low-cost Lovecraftian tale set on a gorgeous stretch of Italian coast that corkscrewed between romance and brutal body-horror. The Endless was a time-loop sci-fi head-scratcher involving a UFO cult that proved similarly spell-binding made on a similar shoestring. By 2019's Synchronic, about a designer drug that allows users to step through time, they had A-list actors like Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan queuing up to work with them, and superhero studios keen to collaborate (they've since helmed episodes of Marvel's Moon Knight and Loki). Together, they're storytellers capable of building epic worlds without requiring epic resources. While Benson and Moorhead have enjoyed their recent excursions into the MCU, unsettling paranormal puzzles made on a dime are where they say their hearts truly lie. Which is why, when the pandemic struck and the world was thrown into lockdown, they began planning a supernatural mystery they could shoot in Benson's apartment, star in themselves (the duo often act in their own movies) and craft almost entirely themselves. Something In The Dirt – their most compelling film to date – tells the tale of neighbours John and Levi, drawn into an unlikely friendship by unexplainable phenomenons in their apartment block. They decide to document this activity in search of fame and fortune – but can each party trust the other, as revelations about their secretive lives follow them down a rabbit hole into the unknown? We met with Benson and Moorhead in person last summer, before Something In The Dirt's release, while they were filming Loki season two. They told us about their writing habits and helped us decode one of the most jigsaw-like cult dramas in decades – a must-watch for fans of David Robert Mitchell's Under The Silver Lake and films like it. This is a spoiler conversation so be sure to catch the film before tuning in – it's available on Hulu for our listeners in America, and video on demand if you're tuning in from the UK.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. As we shatter our record for "Longest Episode on a Single Movie" (the previous record-holder being Oculus), is it any surprise that it was prompted by a new release from Rustic Films? Probably not, if you've heard our previous episodes, and probably even less surprising if you've seen the subject of our new episode: SOMETHING IN THE DIRT (2022). We were lucky enough to catch the latest from directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead during the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, but we didn't want to do a full episode on it until it was widely released. The movie is now on VOD platforms everywhere, and we absolutely recommend checking it out and supporting some of our favorite filmmakers. The episode length may seem a little daunting, but we had a fabulous time discussing this film and an even better time chatting with returning guest producer David Lawson Jr.! It's always special having a chance to interview Dave on the podcast, and we really can't thank him enough for his time. If you want to skip right to the interview portion of the episode, the timecode is listed below. We also recommend checking out the new Rustic Films shop to grab some of their fabulous new merch at the following link: https://www.rustic.film/shop And as always, thanks so much for listening!! Timecode for David Lawson Jr interview - 02:26:00 CW: there is some discussion of anxiety and depression in the latter portion of the movie review.

But that's not all — in the virtual podbooth this week, Chris is joined by Amon, James Dyer, and Helen O'Hara to talk about the Christmas movies they wish could have sequels (and things take a turn for the dark pretty quickly), discuss the week's movie news, review Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Hellraiser, The Wonder, My Father's Dragon, Slumberland and Is That Black Enough For You?, while all trying desperately to name every movie Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg have made together. This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees Daniel Radcliffe make his second pod-appearance of the year, as he tells Chris Hewitt all about playing Weird Al Yankovic in the riotous faux-biopic, Weird. They also talk about accents, living in New York, and what Radcliffe's own biopic would be called. And names are on the agenda with Jennifer Lawrence too, as the Oscar-winning actress returns with her contemplative drama, Causeway, the first movie to be produced by her company, Excellent Cadaver. In our interview, she and director Lila Neugebauer tell Chris all about the how and why of the movie's name change from Red, White & Water, about working in a heated swimming pool, and more. Then, in the podbooth, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and John Nugent to discuss the week's movie news, being replaced by Liam Hemsworth, review EVERY FILM IN THE WORLD including Enola Holmes 2, Living, Weird, Causeway, All Quiet On The Western Front, and Something In The Dirt, and tackle the thorny issue of which comedy movie directors they'd put on their personal Mount Rushmore. If your favourite director isn't mentioned, rest assured they were mentioned, but were cut out. Probably. Enjoy!
