Gregg is an independent researcher, writer and music producer from the UK who focuses on esotericism and occultism alongside media and literature theory, cyberculture, fictioning, and non-standard philosophy. He graduated an MA in Spirituality and Religion from University of Amsterdam in 2025 and is currently working on expanding his thesis research into a PhD project. In this episode, Gregg peels back the layers of the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit, or CCRU, a group that stands as one of the most unique and enigmatic forms of modern occultism. Using a "matryoshka doll" methodology, we look briefly at the core members of the group, and then explore the CCRU as a collective myth and an independent entity. We'll trace their origins from the intellectual split between Sadie Plant's cyberfeminism and Nick Land's "dark" inhumanism, fueled by the rhythmic, non-linear influences of the 1990s jungle dance scene. We discuss "Time Sorcery," the Numogram, and the mechanics of hyperstition—the process by which fictions "make themselves real" through cybernetic feedback loops to reshape our present reality. To explain this concept a bit further, the core of Gregg's thesis focuses on "Hyperstition as the idea of fictions that make themselves real by functioning as "time-circuits" or self-fulfilling prophecies. Gregg illustrates how the CCRU's use of "theory-fiction" was not merely a literary style, but a deliberate "writing magic" designed to bypass rational thought and manifest "inhuman" entities or future outcomes into the present. Ultimately, the work positions the CCRU as a unique bridge between 20th-century esoteric practices (like Chaos Magic) and the digital-age occultism of the 21st century, suggesting that the group's influence persists today as a collective entity or "egregore" that continues to shape contemporary culture and philosophy. In this episode, I sit down with Aidan Wachter and Tommie Kelly for a long, searching conversation about the state of modern magic and how our practices—and our lives—are changing under cultural and personal pressures. We start with the sense that magic doesn't always work the way it used to. Aidan shares his thoughts on why: the sheer difficulty of magical training, the problems with visualization-heavy systems, and how easily magic becomes another cog in the productivity machine. Together, we look at how these pressures strip practitioners of depth, patience, and wonder.From there, we challenge the “scout badge” approach that creeps into contemporary magic, where achievement replaces mystery. We talk about how capitalism, Catholic symbolism, and our own preferences quietly shape the language we use for spiritual experience, often without our noticing.Rest and downtime become a major thread in our discussion. After dealing with injuries myself, I've come to understand rest as a crucial—if neglected—aspect of spiritual work. Tommie and Aidan echo this, speaking about burnout, financial pressures, and the emotional cost of manifesting major life changes. We compare fast, results-oriented magic with slower, more traditional spiritual paths, and consider why the latter often produces more sustainable transformation.We then turn to the digital world and how constant stimulation affects our sense of wonder. Aidan reflects on practicing Chaos Magic in the 1980s with almost no external influence, and how that solitude fostered originality. In contrast, today's nonstop feed of content makes deep practice and introspection much harder. That leads us into a conversation about authenticity, personal flaws, and how childhood—and identity—now unfold under the surveillance of social media.I share how aligning my life with seasonal rhythms has shifted my work and well-being, especially as I've moved toward agricultural patterns.In the Plus Show Aidan and Tommie talk about stepping back from the news cycle to protect mental health while still being ready to act when real crises arise. Chaos Magic is one of those unfortunate topics which, because of a poorly selected name, people tend to think they know what it is, without ever looking into it. Maybe that's a good thing from the perspective of a true Chaos Magician, but the more likely truth is that (1) the devotees probably don't care if someone understands it or not, and (2), there is no such thing as Truth in the first place so either of these scenarios is equally ineffectual in the world and there's really no one to care or not care, but this is not to say that the entire discipline is Nihilistic. A better term might be flexible, and before we start trying to understand this, we need to unravel a few things. First of all, the unfortunate name here: Chaos Magic. When people hear the word Chaos, they often think of melee, destruction, and wreckage. Officially, Chaos refers to a state of complete confusion or disorder, where there is no order or organization. It can also describe a confused mass or mixture of things. As for Chaos Magic, what we're concerned with is more of the absence of organization, formality, and tradition. But this doesn't mean the total void of performance. Quite the opposite. Chaos magic is, above all else, concerned with Results. One of its mantras is, If it works, it works. In the first section we'll cover some deeper definitions and origins of Chaos Magic. In part 2 we'll explore the tools of the trade. In part 3 we'll dive into Chaos Magic in Popular and fringe Culture. And that will lead us into some part 4, Pop Culture Events and Products that just may be forms of Chaos Magic being performed in plain sight. By the end we should know just enough about Chaos Magic to get us in trouble.
