He featured in your favorite non-Disney animated princess movie, and now you can learn all about the real man behind the creepy cartoon villain (spoiler: it's not far off!) This week, Hannah tells Katy about Grigori Rasputin, the peasant-turned-holy-man who became a close confidant of the Russian Imperial Family in the early 1900's. From Katy's bloody mandolin accident, to security blankets (real and metaphorical), to dirty genitalia, this episode details the wild life of a man who convinced the Tsarina (and himself) that he was imbued with God-given powers, and was the only hope for her dying child; and it ultimately led to his completely unhinged (and likely exaggerated) assassination. You won't want to miss this disaster of a biography. So pour your drinks, put down the Aspirin, and join us for this macabre tale from one of the darker corners of history.Sources:https://archive.org/details/rasputin0000shuk/page/22/mode/2up?view=theaterhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexei_Nikolaevich,_Tsarevich_of_Russiahttps://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/what-really-happened-during-murder-rasputin-russia-mad-monk-180961572/https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/the-many-lives-of-maria-rasputin-daughter-of-the-mad-monkSupport the Show.Follow us @thetaleswetellpodcast on Facebook and Instagram, or thetaleswetellpodcast.comSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/thetaleswetellpodcast?Click here for merch!

The legend of Rasputin's death goes that he survived poisoning, being shot in the head before being thrown through a hole in the ice in the Neva River, where he finally died by drowning. But Rasputin biographer Douglas Smith, Dan's guest today, says that isn't what happened. He's been to Russia to study the crime scene photos and the evidence and says things happened a little differently to the way the history is told...He joins Dan to dig into the life of Grigori Rasputin, the Siberian mystique whose charisma held the Romanov Tsar and Tsarina in a vice-like grip, securing his own influence over Russia's politics and church at the turn of the 20th century.Produced by James Hickmann and edited by Dougal PatmoreSign up to History Hit at historyhit.com/subscribe using code BLACKFRIDAYPOD at checkout, for $1/£1 per month for 4 months and you'll get nearly £30 off our normal monthly price over your first 4 months.

In an era shaken to its core by dramatic political and social change, a nation wracked by war and looming economic disaster looked for a villain to blame. In Russia, on the eve of the October Revolution, that villain was the charismatic holy man who had seemingly bewitched the tsar and the royal family. In this episode, we explore the life and the many deaths of Grigori Rasputin. Ben Davison wraps up a huge week where the scale of corporate profiteering, what Sally McManus calls the Greed-Price Spiral, has been exposed as driving 69% of inflation, the nation is debating whether 11,000 people who have more than $5M in super should get a tax concession or whether that money is better invested in the 24,000,000 other people struggling under a 4.5% real wage cut, record rises in interest rates and underfunding in our public schools. The From the Heart YES campaign launched in Adelaide and Unions for YES launched online (you can join your union at australianunions.org.au/wow) as the vast majority still support recognition and consultation being enshrined in the constitution. At his 35th Mardi Gras parade Albo became the 1st sitting PM to march at Mardi Gras as towards the back Tsarina Thorpe, self proclaimed "Movement Leader", staged a one woman protest and had to be removed. Sadly Insider's became a turgid mess when Speers became fixated on "Florence" the bogged drill as Chris Bowen attempted to discuss emissions reduction policy, then for the second week in a row Speers obsessed over a minor detail in the Voice referendum working group that guest Mark Kenny called a "phantom argument" and finally Speers managed to round out the show by spending less than 10 seconds on the largest cut to real wages, record corporate profits and the greed-price spiral by throwing to the Murdoch journalist who made a quip about airline prices. As you can imagine, Ben gets fired up today. What is love? Does anyone really know? Valentine's Day is a day mostly focused on expressing love. Love is many things. It is an emotion that motivates us, love is an expression of affection, and most importantly, love is a mindset that we should choose often. Our spouses, our kids, and our friends usually become people we could choose not to love. But we love then anyway. Do we know why? Many times, loving others comes down to a mindset we choose. One of the words that describe love is affectionate. Affectionate means “showing, indicating, or characterized by fondness or love; caring, or fondly tender.” Some people are more affectionate than others, so if someone's outward displays of affection means a lot to you, you can use this word to let them know it as it is usually easily understood. The love for a baby makes most humans pretty affectionate, with a sudden need to cuddle and squeeze. This can also be true of a puppy or a kitten. One of the songs I originally wrote for my musical Tsarina (https://djworksmusic.com/tsarinathemusical) is What is Love? Nicholas and Alexandra, of Imperialistic Russia, were two young lovers and future leaders totally unprepared for the task of leading a country rife with strife and dissent. There was intense division, fear and threat to the life they imagined they would live as a couple. As seen from love letters they wrote to each other almost daily, they married for love, not just position, which was unusual for the time period. As their story unfolds, their love took on different forms. Here we will talk about the presence, power and purpose of love. Elizaveta (Elizabeth) Petrovna was the daughter of Peter the Great and his history-making wife Catherine I, believed to have risen from being a serf to becoming Empress in her own right. Elizabeth was not raised to be ruler, there were plenty of distant male relatives to take on the mantle of Tsar, but as we'll discuss later in this episode, Elizabeth clawed through heartbreak, tragedy, and abuse to eventually be crowned Empress of Russia. However, her reign, much like the other 16th-century empresses, has been marred by scandal. The glorious and long reign of Catherine the Great has overshadowed that of Elizabeth. In addition, Catherine made sure to steer the narrative of her relationship with Elizabeth, often painting the empress as a heartless and cold manipulator, but she was far more capable and accomplished than she is often given credit for.Featured Guest: Author Ellen Alpsten is best known for her two novels on Elizabeth and her mother Catherine I titled Tsarina and The Tsarina's Daughter. In the 4th of our series, we see Grigory begin his ascent to rarified atmosphere of Russia's loftiest political circles. Almost immediately upon meeting them, he became a trusted and loyal companion to the Tsar and Tsarina, eventually providing what can only be described as magical childcare. That does not coincide with his Marvin Gaye-esque brand of sexual healing. He was a weird dude, but he wasn't that gross. Chris displays his encyclopedic knowledge of ED medications, there is a great "footprints in the sand" joke, and there is a decent chance everyone gets poison ivy. For this episode, we open a new chapter that plunges us into the Paris of the inter-war period, the decade that became notoriously known as the Roaring Twenties. What did the wildness of this decade consist of? It is largely due to women who flourished in this welcoming capital, lived their lives as they wanted, and became artists on equal footing with men. They played a primordial role in the construction of modernity, and we are rediscovering them today. Many of them came from abroad to settle in Paris, where they knew they would find private academies for their training and a growing avant-garde in which they could find their place. This was the case for Marie Vassilieff, born in 1884 in Smolensk. Thanks to a grant from the Tsarina, this intrepid young Russian, whose parents intended for her to study medicine, opted for art, started her training at the Academy of Saint Petersburg, and in 1905, at the age of 21, settled in the Montparnasse district. She would later say: “Yes, it's me, Marie Vassilieff, very small, very blond, very round, very gray eyes, very short hair and who has been living for twenty years in this hell, this unique paradise that is Paris”. Her joyful voice and her tenacious character take us on an adventure, and show us what it was like to be an artist at the beginning of the century. The podcast Great Women of Art gives a voice to women artists of the 20th century. They speak about their work, their lives, the world around them and their achievements. Let us go in search of their presence, their secrets. Let us rediscover the hidden history of women artists through their voices.Great Women of Art is a podcast produced by AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions, in collaboration with the Institut national de l'audiovisuel, with the support of Maison Veuve Clicquot and the Ministry of Culture's Délégation à la transmission, aux territoires et à la démocratie culturelle.  AWARE is a non-profit organization co-founded in 2014 by Camille Morineau.
