Dreams give us guidance in so many different ways, helping us solve problems, gain insights into our behavior, ignite our creativity and so much more. But if you really want to supercharge your dreaming experience, then it's time to take a look at lucid dreaming.     For the unaware, a lucid dream is a dream where you realize you're dreaming while you're in the dream. Most people, when they become lucid, like to do fun things like fly in the air, travel through buildings and have fanciful sex. But lucid dreaming also enables you to make contact with yourself in a way not possible in waking life. How? For that, I turn to noted Dream Researcher and Educator Robert Hoss, who in this episode tells us:·      the importance of lucid dreams·      his favorite techniques for getting lucid·      how to access lucid dreaming wisdom·      the types of messages you can receive in a lucid dream and who you can get them from·      how his own lucid dreams changed the course of his life·      when lucid dreams can bring comfort to your daily life·      Plus – as Director of the International Association for the Study of Dreams Annual Conference, Robert gives us a preview of this year's event! If you're ready to take a deep dive into your soul, check out how you can step into the world of lucid dreaming on this profound episode of Dream Power Radio.    Robert Hoss, MS is a director and past president of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, Director of the DreamScience Foundation for research grants, faculty member of the Haden Institute, and on the board of the National Institute for Integrative Healthcare.  He is author/editor of Dreams: Understanding Biology, Psychology & Culture (2019) and Dreams that Change Our Lives (2017) and is author of Dream to Freedom (2013) and Dream Language (2nd edition is now a free download on www.dreamscience.org). His work is published in 8 other books and 4 professional Journals.  He was host of the DreamTime Radio series and has been featured in a PBS special, Readers Digest, Prevention, the Psychology Today blog and USA Today www.dreamscience.org Want more ways to find joy in your life? A Viet Nam combat vet with PTSD. What do 137 of his dreams over 45 years reveal about how dreams help us process emotion? Also tips for dealing with nightmares and highlights from the upcoming IASD conference. Katherine speaks with IASD conference co-chair and founder of Dream Science Robert Hoss. Near death experiences (NDEs) provide evidence that consciousness exists outside of the body. We speak today with scientist, lucid dreamer and instigator in-chief at the International Association for the Study of Dreams, Robert J. Hoss. Bob shares evidence from his study of over 4000 published NDEs suggesting near universal experiences around death independent of religious or cultural background. Bob then relates his own lucid near death experience which was one of the factors that woke up in him his abiding interest in dreaming. We then talk about Bob's research into the psychological effect of color in both waking life and in dreams. Color often contains concealed emotions in dreams. Bob describes his research with over 4000 dreams from one subject tracking their emotional life with color in dreams. Check out Bob's free Color Questionnaire at DreamScience.org We take a call from Lucille from Cambria who wonders if she only dreams in black and white. Dreaming has been practiced by mankind since like…forever. So you wouldn’t think there’d be anything new to learn about it. Right? Well, the correct answer is wrong. Researchers, psychologists and dreamers have been building on the information learned over the years to come up with new techniques, new insights and new discoveries about the whats and whys of dreaming. Once a year those interested in this work gather for the conference run by the International Association for the Study of Dreams, which this year is being held in June. Because of the pandemic this year’s conference will be virtual, and because we like to look at the lemonade instead of the lemons, that means that everybody is invited to attend. The chair of the conference, Robert Hoss, a dream master in his own right, talks to us in this episode about the conference and dreams and he tells us:•how he used his own dreams in planning this event•the major themes of the conference•why dreams are an effective way of dealing with life issues•about the benefits of lucid dreaming•how you can attend the conference For a lively discussion about my favorite topic—dreams—don’t miss this magical episode of Dream Power Radio. Dream Scientist, Bob Hoss, Director of the Dream Science Foundation, and past president of the International Association for the Study of Dreams (www.AsDreams.org -- and will be speaking at the upcoming conference) wrangled 100 dreamers (ala in the style of "Chicken Soup for the Soul") to share stories that  have done just that!   Have you ever awakened from a dream that left you feeling stunned—a dream so vivid or impactful—so unexpected—that it changes your life from that point forward?  Imagine you could ask a question of a dream character, or the dream itself, and watch as a profoundly surprising response appears. Suppose you could take action in your dream to eliminate a recurring nightmare, heal a relationship, or even a physical ailment.     These are what might be called big dreams, stories of life changing guidance, insight and healing; some that reach beyond the senses and even beyond death.  They are presented as guideposts along our life's journey, and introduced by 22 internationally acclaimed experts, psychologists, researchers, and best-selling authors from the International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD):  Deirdre Barrett, Susannah Benson, Kelly Bulkeley, Laurel Clark, Gayle Delaney, Marcia Emery, Patricia Garfield, Robert Gongloff, Bob Haden, Robert Hoss, Ed Kellogg, Stanley Krippner, Justina Lasley, Jacquie E. Lewis, Tallulah Lyons, Wendy Pannier, Alan Siegel, Carlyle Smith, Gregory Scott Sparrow, Jeremy Taylor, Robert Waggoner and moi, Kelly Sullivan Walden.   On the show today, we talk about some of his favorite stories--these dream tales will inspire you, make you cry, uplift your soul, make you never again take your dreams lying down!     Here's more about my favorite Dream Scientist:    Robert Hoss, MS is author of Dream Language, Officer and former President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, Director of the DreamScience foundation for research grants, advisory board of the Soul Medicine Institute and Haden Institute faculty member. A frequent guest on radio and TV, he was host of the IASD DreamTime Radio series and has been an internationally acclaimed lecturer and/or instructor on dreams and dreamwork at various institutions, colleges and universities for over 30 years. His simple but powerful Image Activation dreamworking approach is based on a unique blending of Gestalt work, Jungian theory, the neurobiology of dreaming, plus his research into the significance of color in dreams. Formerly a scientist, and researcher in the field of optical communications, he was a pioneer with multiple patents and the Corporate Vice President for Global Telecommunications at both American Express and IBM. He now devotes his science and management skills to dream studies. He was recently featured in the PBS Dreamtime TV special, and in Readers Digest, Prevention Magazine and USA Today.

Brain States and the Psychology of DreamsWhen we are asleep, parts of the brain that govern our waking life shut down, but many other parts of the brain remain switched on. One brain region very active when we are dreaming is called the visual association cortex, which is located at the rear of the head. It makes meaning out of what we see, and engages the brain’s emotional centers, which is why dreams are often laden with emotion. In a new book called “Dream to Freedom,” authors Robert and Lynne Hoss describe the many processes occurring in the dreaming brain, and how they relate to the unconscious mind. Dreams often involve distorted versions of waking events and behaviors, and can represent an attempt by the brain to resolve these dilemmas emotionally. Robert Hoss is the president of DreamScience foundation, and one of the world’s foremost authorities on dreamwork and Gestalt psychology. Lynne Hoss is a psychotherapist. Dr. Carol Francis, Psychologist, Marriage, Family & Child Therapist and Hypnotherapist in Los Angeles Beach Cities Area.   In the book the authors show that understanding our dreams does not necessarily decrease negative emotion. They present a new psychological protocol called “Dream to Freedom” based on EFT or Emotional Freedom Techniques, an “evidence-based” therapy method. The Dream to Freedom technique is designed to reduce the emotional stress that can accompany dreams by combining EFT with Gestalt dreamwork. EFT has been validated in many studies of anxiety and other mood disorders. The authors present many case histories, in which the Dream to Freedom technique has allowed dreamers to resolve the emotional dilemmas presented by their dreams, as well as facilitate lucid dreaming and stop recurring nightmares.
