After receiving a BA in English and American literature in 1984 he spent the next two decades traveling around the world, pausing in unexpected places to work at decidedly odd jobs (e.g., gutting salmon in Alaska, teaching English to prostitutes in Bangkok and self-defense to land-reform activists in Mexico, managing commercial real-estate in New York's Diamond District, helping Spanish physicians publish their research). In his mid-30s, Chris decided to pursue doctoral studies in Psychology.Drawing upon his multi-cultural experience, Chris' research focused on distinguishing the human from the cultural, first by focusing on shamanism and ethnobotony—studying how various societies interact with altered states of consciousness and the sacred plants that provoke them—and later, by looking at similarly diverse cultural perspectives on sexuality. His doctoral dissertation was a multi-disciplinary investigation of prehistoric human sexual behavior, guided by the world-renowned psychologist, Stanley Krippner, at Saybrook Graduate School, in San Francisco, CA. Chris' most recent book is Civilized to Death: Why Everything's Amazing but Nobody's Happy. Terje G. Simonsen is a Norwegian Historian of Ideas and non-fiction author, specializing in the esoteric and occult. He is educated at the University of Oslo, where he also has taught introductory courses on philosophical and literary works. His dissertation on the anthroposophical journal Janus received much acclaim and was released as a book in 2001. In the prestigious series The Cultural Library and The World's Holy Scriptures, Simonsen has published essays on I and Thou, the mystically inspired main work by the dialogue philosopher Martin Buber, and The First Book of Enoch, an esoteric text from antiquity. Simonsen has received several grants, and is a full member of ESSWE, the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism. In addition, Simonsen is educated in gestalt therapy and psychosynthesis, and his varied career has also included stints in psychiatry, kindergarten, museums, security, catering etc. Today he works as a freelance writer. Simonsen is also a café aficionado, salsa dancer, amateur pianist and chess player.Since childhood Simonsen has been fascinated by ‘magical' phenomena as telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and healing—an interest based on some peculiar experiences of his own as well as strange stories told by friends and family. Later, this fascination led to extensive forays into esoteric and occult traditions, where such phenomena are not seen as chimera but as part of an expanded consciousness, and also into the science about such phenomena, i.e. parapsychology. The result is the present book, an entertaining, colorful and multifaceted good read, endorsed by several of the world's foremost experts in the field – Dean Radin, Stanley Krippner, Jeffrey Mishlove, Jeffrey Kripal etc. - as well as a number of other authors and critics, as e.g. the Pulitzer-prize winner Teresa Carpenter and the New York Times bestselling fantasy-author Herbie Brennan.BOOKS:A Short History of (Nearly) Everything Paranormalhttps://www.amazon.com/Terje-Simonsen/e/B079K5RJPP TWITTER:@terjesim1 FACEBOOK:https://www.facebook.com/terje.simonsen.9

53: Investigating Your Personal Mythology

Black Hoodie Alchemy

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 10, 2023 61:46

This week on the show, I am tying up some loose threads that can be found recurring all throughout the Black Hoodie Alchemy program: the idea of inner mythology. As above, so below; as within, so without -- the practice of alchemy through art and science helps to investigate and further define the inner realms of our psyche so hungry for transmutation. Through a web of dreams, art, intuition, and esoteric magick guided with rigor and discipline, the simple ideals and anxieties of our imagination can prove to be a long-running thread ready to be pulled, unraveling the shadowed mechanisms of our psyches so we may understand them with greater transparency. This is a topic that in many ways is the basis of this entire BHA program, so naturally there will be many familiar topics brought up here as we assemble them within the overarching context of investigating the mythology of the psyche. Why were you so drawn to certain characters and themes as a child? Why are you so drawn to certain themes now? Why do your dreams lack certain aspects, and why might your life lack certain aspects? Many mystically-minded people are wont to interpret every piece of a dream to be a part of the greater whole, yet much fewer people take this approach in their daily lives. Does everything have meaning? Are there such things are coincidences or is everything meant to be? Perhaps, or perhaps not, but one thing is for certain: the more one pays attention to the details of their lives, the more information there is to be gained. Like a detective hot on the trail, an archeologist uncovering a buried monolith, or an artist bending over backward to paint a chapel ceiling, we grind and sweat over the mythologies of our own lives. For it is either we do this -- or perhaps our mythologies might grind and sweat us out first. Considering books like Personal Mythology by Dr. David Feinstein and Stanley Krippner (which is very much a work of analytic psychology, the study fostered by Carl Jung and furthered by people like Joseph Campbell among many others) the work of Carl Jung, The Goblin Universe by Ted Holiday (last episode's subject), and my books Dive Manual and Hunt Manual, I attempt to not only lay out the imperative need to investigate your personal mythology, but also the practical scientific merit as well as the merit of the mystical and transcendental. I don't seek to give all the answers here -- nor could I -- but I do shed some light with some source material to look into further! I hope you dig it. He's a world-famous researcher and author who has has hung out with everyone from Timothy Leary to Alan Watts to the Grateful Dead. He and I have traveled together to all over the planet, from a shamanism conference in Bavaria to a Psychoneuroimmunology conference in Buenos Aires to an adventure in search of the desert spirits in Morocco. We entered the “Sistine Chapel of Prehistoric Art” together at Lascaux, France and visited religious scholars in Kerala, India. I'm leaving out A LOT. He's been a close friend for 25 years, and was one of the first (and most frequent) guests on the podcast. Here are links to previous episodes: 5, 24, 82, 169, 211 (with Wim Hof), and 263. This podcast is focused on Personal Mythology. Finding Your Personal Mythology is about establishing your Guiding Principles in Life. Personal Mythology is the collection of everything that helps us make sense of the world around us, and navigate life regardless of its circumstances. If your view yourself as a sovereign individual, then your Personal Mythology is the constitution of your individuality, the guiding principles governing your decisions, and your way of life. The idea of Personal Mythology was introduced by Dr. David Feinstein and Dr. Stanley Krippner in their 1988 book, “Personal Mythology, the psychology of Your Evolving Self”. Having a Personal Mythology is not just about having a world view or a belief system, and also includes information received through our dreams, imagination, and intuition. In fact, the use of term myth in Personal Mythology is meant to highlight this. Back in ancient Greek civilization, Myth or Methos were transpersonal stories or motifs that were meant to symbolically represent or guide real human experiences. This podcast covers the following topics:- Declaration of Personal Mythology, an Example. - How is life without a Personal Mythology?- How to find your Personal Mythology? The key takeaway in this podcast is for you to understand the importance of having a Personal Mythology in life. Your personal mythology gives you the clarity to live your life in an authentic, creative, and empowering way. Your personal mythology is the wisdom that grows with you, to guide you through your life, wherever that may take you. This podcast is produced by Aion Farvahar, who is a Life and Spirituality Mentor, and a Psychoshamanic and IFS Self-Leadership Practitioner. With the advent of the nuclear age, Western science reached the pinnacle of invention, but lacked a critical understanding of its underlying wisdom or purpose. Carl Jung framed the problem as “modern man in search of a soul.” When the Western mind turned outward, searching for what was missing, it first turned to the East. A trickle of Eastern gurus soon became a flood, and by the late 1960s, all sorts of gurus, roshis, rinpoches, and other teachers were promising some form of mastery of life - if only one followed their path. Many Americans embarked upon this quest for spirituality, mostly in California, and later across the nation. Our guests, Dan Millman and Ron Boyer, were at the forefront of the California movement. They not only embraced Eastern wisdom; they took an active part in remaking Western psychology–at the time mired in psychoanalysis and behaviorism–into a humanistic “third force” of psychology that expanded the discipline to include religion, spirituality, and self-actualization. Along the way, they discovered not only the benefits, but also the pitfalls, of embarking on a spiritual path. This is their story.   Dan Millman, a former world trampoline champion, Stanford University gymnastics coach, martial arts instructor, and Oberlin college professor, has authored 18 books published in 29 languages. Way of the Peaceful Warrior – after initially modest sales, was republished by New World Library, became a mega-best seller, and was adapted to film in 2006. Dan has traveled widely, teaching in over thirty countries. His most current book is Peaceful Heart, Warrior Spirit, which is the true story of his spiritual quest. An award-winning poet, author, and screenwriter, Ron is also the director of the Krippner Center for Indigenous Studies and currently a doctoral student in Cultural and Historical Studies of Religion at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley.

“The integral experience is where people come up with mystical experiences, spiritual experiences. Not everybody gets that far, but those that do often feel a sense of oneness … or some of them feel that they're in the presence of God or of the Spirit. And again, this can be very very powerful and in previous days, this would be looked upon as a psychotic hallucination.” -- Dr. Stanley Krippner This week on Comes A Time, Oteil and Mike are joined by accomplished psychologist Dr. Stanley Krippner, who has been a key figure in studying altered states of consciousness over the last 50 years.  In this conversation you'll hear Dr. Krippner detail his understanding of the psychedelic experience and how it relates to modern medical assessments of the human mind, as well as stories of mid-concert experiments with dream telepathy and hypnosis at the request of Mickey Hart and Jerry Garcia. Dr. Krippner speaks on the interconnected reality behind individual anomalous experiences, his friendship with Native American spiritual leader and friend of the Grateful Dead, Rolling Thunder, and much more. This is a must-listen episode for those interested in the mystical and the spiritual, and how they relate to our human journey. Dr. Stanley Krippner has published extensive research that has led to significant advancements in our comprehension of dream telepathy, hypnosis, dissociation, and many other unconventional angles of understanding the human mind. He co-authored Varieties of Anomalous Experience, which explores the relevance of non-psychopathological phenomena in the individual and collective human experience. In this conversation Dr. Krippner shares some of the wisdom that he's learned in his years of study with Oteil and Mike, as they dive into the wonder and mystery of the anomalous.   Learn more about Dr. Stanley Krippner: https://stanleykrippner.weebly.com/ ----------- This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. There has been little rigorous research on the spiritual content of ayahuasca sessions, despite the tribal use of this herbal concoction and the existence of three Brazilian churches in which ayahuasca is considered a sacrament. The Casto Spirituality Scoring System, a reliable measure designed to identify spiritual content in dream reports, was utilized to answer the following question: "Is it possible to identify spiritual content in ayahuasca reports?" This system was found to be feasible in identifying "spiritual objects," "spiritual characters," "spiritual settings," "spiritual activities," "spiritual emotions," and "spiritual experiences" in ayahuasca reports taken from pertinent literature. The Casto system defines "spiritual" as one's focus on, and/or reverence, openness, and connectedness to something of significance believed to be beyond one's full understanding and/or individual existence.

Chakras are real. They are energetic wheels of light that can be gateways to freeing us from our past, hearing our inner self and achieving higher levels of consciousness. Like the cells inside our body, our naked eye cannot see the energy centers that exist along our spine and at the top of our head. Nevertheless, they are there. My guests will tell you about the seven main chakras, which are at the front of the spine and at the top of the head. They will help you discover and enhance the positive qualities of each center, transform the challenging aspects and learn how they affect each other. As a previous show guest, psychologist Dr. Stanley Krippner, PhD, wrote: Awakening the Chakras can provide a roadmap for navigating life's journey...and rouse the inner spirit of those who accept their invitation. Ram Das called it “a must-read for every spiritual seeker.” Please join us Thursday to learn how to use your chakras to hear your inner self.

What do you imagine when you hear the word shaman? I'm guessing it's a picture from National Geographic Magazine or the old Western movies. Today Shamans are psychologists, graphic designers, film-makers, Ph.D.s, authors and respected members of their communities. Yes, National Geographic is correct and so is the reality that your neighbor, who looks just like you, may be using shamanism in their counseling practice. In the past, shamans had a lot in common with the priests and priestesses as keepers of the sacred knowledge of life. Even today, the shaman's role is to connect the physical and spiritual realms, bringing together the human being, nature and Spirit through ritual. They harness the energies in the Universe to heal all living beings and Mother Earth, and some can even control the weather. Ancient traditions combine with new methods, as each shaman brings their own unique talents to their practice. Please join us Thursday to learn about Rolling Thunder, a respected Shaman.
